James Franco looks hot hot hot in the new December/January issue of BlackBook Magazine.
The 30-year-old actor, who plays the lover of Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) in Gus van Sant’s highly biopic Milk, speaks candidly about his career and his studies at Columbia and NYU. Franco, who wrote directed and starred in 2005’ Ape, a film about a closeted gay writer, discussed playing another gay character in Milk:
On working with Sean Penn: “After we wrapped up Milk, Sean Penn said to me, ‘I’m going to have to break up with you now.”
On his fave NYC hang-outs: “Bungalow 8, Smith and Mills and Chanterelle.”
On his outlook on gay relationships: “As soon as I got out of high school, I was like, I don’t care if anybody’s gay. It doesn’t matter. Doing Milk, I don’t know if it broadened my mind at all. I like to think that I was as open as I could be at that point.”

Uh…Just a little FYI - Franco didn’t play a closeted homosexual character in The Ape. Who read THAT into the film?? I also don’t know WHY people assume he’s not straight after his MILK role. No one seemed to think that about Penn or Ledger or Glynenhall or other straight actors who took on such roles.I may be disappointed in James’ film choices to play these characters but I’m still smitten with the guy. He’s unbelievably stunning! His smile could light up a room!

His character in The Ape isn’t gay (closeted or otherwise). Also, that movie is SHOCKINGLY bad. The title character is played by a man in a dime-store ape mask (no moving mouth, muffled dialogue) — in profile shots you can actually see through the mask’s eyeholes to the other side. A good movie to watch in a group and ridicule.

AGREED, BK. I think I remember there being a scene where the camera was behind a bookshelf or something and you could barely see what was happening in the scene. Though i do applaud the movie for the priceless line in the start - “Oh Judy, your seahorse!” But beyond that first five minutes, its pretty much unbearable.
