Catherine Hardwicke Fired!!!
Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been fired and won’t be returning to helm the sequel, reports Deadline Hollywood.
Sources reveal the acclaimed Thirteen director, “was difficult and irrational during the making of Twilight.” The franchise, which has already accrued $160+ million, headlined Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
The film studio, Summit Entertainment, has started preparing the sequel New Moon and to contain costs, they are considering making third book Eclipse back to back.
WHAT DO YOU THINK of the firing of Hardwicke? Will you still see New Moon?
UPDATE: The movie studio has released the following statement: “Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted Twilight film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for New Moon.
“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon,” said Hardwicke. “Directing Twilight has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel– it is a great story.”
“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the Twilight franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”

i didin`t like the movie twilight htat much..
it was really.. missing something T_T;;
let`s see what the new director can do [;~
this will surely suck….now that she’s not directing it…
the books themselves are stupid stories without her jazzing it up
it’ll be just one of those stupid teen flicks that are idiotic to watch
Either way they better stick to a female director……
wow, well she didn’t exactly do an excellent job for twilight anyways, but i hope they find someone quick, b/c i do wanna see the rest of the books made!!
rob and kristen <3
This is GOOD news.
Now we just need to get the screenwriter fired.
Good! Maybe they will recast Rosalie now! Hardwicke is the only reason Nikki Reed got hired onto Twilight in the first place
NOOOOOOOOOO! That means its gonna take longer for the movie.
I think they should get people from the Saws or the James Bond movies.
Yeah it would be even more awesome.
But still that means production is gonna be set back and it may not come out till the end of 2010 or even……2011 :/
uhmmmm if anyone needs to be fired its kristen biotch stewart.
just saying.
i just hope it doesn’t affect the actors and that the future movies will be as successful
I like Hardwicke, but I did not like the movie as a whole. I don’t know if this was her fault, the screenwriter’s, or a combination. In the end, the feelings from the book were translated to screen, but the flow of the movie was CRAP! I think it would be smart to film New Moon and Eclipse back-to-back. I also hope that whoever they get to direct is a) a woman and b) keeps the same feelings/look the first movie had. Hardwicke probably wanted more money (for both the production and salary) than Summit was willing to give . Understandable, to an extent, but Summit probably has a lot of debt that needs to be made up from all of its other failures and this is their chance to recoup the losses. Summit better thank their lucky stars they have Rob as Edward, because he is the only reason I would pay to see the next installments if they f*ck up New Moon…
AGAIN< NIKKI CARO NEEDS TO DIRECT NEW MOON!!! SHE DID WHALERIDER ON ONLY 12 MILLION, AND SHE GOT OSCAR NODS! SHE WOULD BE PERFECT!!!!
i love twilight .. but the movie was horrible
it was corny and badly directed
they could have done so much with the movie ..
although i do love catherine’s movies..twilight needs a better director
they only made $160?
hsm3 made $225!!!! YEAH HSM RULES!!
“whatever” needs to take a major chill pill but anyway.. The movie was really disappointing. I am in my 20s and read the book because I heard it was “mindless, fun, beach reading”, which it was. It definately was not supposed to win a pulitzer but it told a good story. I was excited for the movie but they really botched it and something needs to change before New Moon. I personally thought it was the directing and the writing. They missed a giant opportunity to make a movie that was even better than the book (which tended to drone on about how hot Edward was all the time). I thought the acting was ok, I’m not sure what everyone’s problem with Kristen Stewart was, she was one of the few that I thought did very well and I thought she fit Bella to a T. So we shall see. I might be more inclined to consider seeing New Moon if there is a change in the directing and/or writing.
Wow, an unexpected move.
I will still see New Moon, regardless of the director. I think New Moon is a great book and whoever the director will be, the movie will be amazing.
Please, do a movie of ‘Eclipse’!
I don’t know if she did a terriable job then the movie would never had made such money as it did. I think she did as best she could with a low budget and I think they kept it low in hopes to get the sequel out of it. If they use another director great but, this is a rumor Hardwick got fire not to say this was exactly correct information.

sux for her i loved the movie dont care what most think amazes me ho so may found so amy faults with this movie im happy we for twilight at all oh well brng on New Moon
Thank goodness!!! The movie sucked big time, especially with the directing and screenwriting. Bring a director who has the skills, like one who perhaps won an Academy Award???? Or Michael Bay…
I did like Twilight, although I thought it lacked something. I blame it on the screenwriter, because I think Catherine made it have a cool atmosphere with the camera movements, angles and close-ups. And if she had anything to do with the soundtrack, then she is definetely a great director. For me, the problem with the movie was that they focused on compressing almost 600 pages in a two hour film, keeping as much as cheesy lines from it as possible. If instead of keeping those terrible lines (”youre like a drug to me, like my personal brand of heroin”, that made me cringe to the tenth degree) the writer had developed their relationship properly (like the bio class when they watch the film and edward nearly breaks the desk, or when they eat lunch together and she asks him a lot of questions about vampires) it would have been a great movie. But, since the script for New Moon is already done by the same writer, I don’t think it will matter that much who gets to directed it, since I expect it to follow the same pattern as Twilight.
ok the director part i understand, but what do they mean when they said they’re going to make eclipse back to back?
can someone explain that to me? =/
OMG
i liked her :/
Its really a shame she is a good director and they all had a chemistry with her..
but i think what sell the movie the most was all the fanatics the book had….
Who wants to bet they recast NIkki Reed with a new Rosalie? She only got hired because of Hardwicke, just watch. They are going to clean house, I’m telling you, and try to regroup and make a stronger sequel that isn’t simply appealing to fans of the books.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they several of the Cullens to be honest, as well as Taylor Lautner
