Benjamin Button
It may have found no love from the Los Angeles Film Critics, who apparently favor happy-go-lucky robots, but Paramount’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” got a big boost from Tuesday morning’s Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s Critics’ Choice nominations (airing on VH1 Jan. 8).
The film got an impressive eight nods, tying “Milk” for bragging rights as the org’s most nominated movie. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, David Fincher’s direction, Eric Roth’s script and Alexandre Desplat’s transcendent score were among those recognized. Golden Globe love is very likely to follow on Thursday morning, putting “Button,” which doesn’t even open until Christmas, in a good position to potentially lead the Oscar derby in January.
Early pre-award indicators are all over the map, making the best picture race increasingly tight among several realistic possibilities, including “Button,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk” and surging box office winners “The Dark Knight” and “Wall-E.”
Monday’s “Benjamin Button” black-tie premiere after-party (in a tented area just outside the CAA lobby in Century City) felt more like the Governors Ball than a post-movie bash. And the film itself got a warm reception at its Village Westwood unveiling, including a surprise appearance during the intro by Steven Spielberg (the BFF of “Button’s” husband-and-wife producing team, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall).
No one could recall the last time anyone threw a black-tie premiere, but according to Kennedy they just felt it would be fun to replicate real glamour since they consider “Button” to be an old-fashioned film in some respects.
Certainly golden couple Pitt and Angelina Jolie all decked out in formal wear looked about as retro a Hollywood glamour pair as you could possibly get.
“I was really nervous because I had our two kids there who were seeing it for the first time, and I was sure they were gonna make me get up and take them to the bathroom at least four times during the film,” Kennedy said, knowing the movie runs two hours and 47 minutes. “But they got caught up in it. My daughter said she cried three times.” Smart kid.
It was family night as Brad brought along his proud parents to bask in the opening’s limelight.
Two nights before, Brad and Angie were among those at Kennedy/Marshall’s holiday party at their spectacular Pacific Palisades home, which among other things is decorated with a very cool giant “Blow-Up” poster right outside their cozy screening room. Kennedy says it’s the first party they’ve ever thrown there (although they had a nice afternoon soiree for “Button” at their ranch during this year’s Telluride Film Festival as well). Ben Stiller, Peter Bogdanovich, Danny DeVito, Rhea Pearlman, Cate Blanchett, Jared Harris, Michael Shannon, Brad Grey, Sherry Lansing and many others seemed to be taking in the holiday (and award) season spirit(s).
But back to Monday night.
Buzz was very good among revelers at the lavish premiere party, with many amazed by Pitt’s aging transformations and genuinely impressed with the movie making. When I mentioned this to director David Fincher he was unmoved.
“This is a premiere in Hollywood. Everyone lies. What did they really think?”
Uh, they REALLY liked it, David.
I asked 90-year-old producer A.C. Lyles, who’s been working on the Paramount lot since, gasp!, 1928 (he says he has a very short resume) how he compared “Benjamin Button” to past studio triumphs. He says he loved the film, particularly the several bits in which a guy gets struck by lightning.
Now if the movie can get struck by some Globe and Oscar lightning, the “Button” crew will be a REALLY happy bunch.

HOLLYWOOD’S hottest couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will go head to head at the 14th Annual Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles next year.
The pair will see their movies ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ and ‘Changeling’ both go up for the coveted Best Picture award at the ceremony.
But neither star seems to be taking it personally with the duo very much together at the premier for Brad’s film earlier this week.
Working the red carpet, Angelina gushed about how proud she is of her man..
She told reporters: “I’m very, very proud…I’m just happy that it [the film] came out so beautifully and that their work is going to be recognised.”
Brad’s Mum and Dad also attended the premier of ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ and joined Angelina in celebrating Brad’s success.
There had been rumours that Brad’s Mum Jane disliked 33-year-old Angelina, blaming her for the actor’s failed marriage to Jennifer Aniston.
But judging by the pictures, the women in Brad’s life are far from enemies.
Angelina and Jane stood side-by-side, posing for pictures in a remarkable show of solidarity.
Fans Do not post on the Star thread. Too stupid for words. God Bless the Jolie Pitts.

Angelina Jolie shrugged off speculation about Clint Eastwood quitting acting as she attended his latest premiere, saying she’d never rule him out.
The actress was full of kind words for the 78-year-old screen legend as she attended the screening in Hollywood.
“I would never say it’s ever his last anything, I put my money on him every time for more,” said Angie, who almost slipped past the press unnoticed as she had dressed down in skinny jeans and a simple grey sweater.
She said of Clint’s new drama thriller, which he also directed: “I haven’t seen it yet but there’s nobody tougher so I think he’s probably scary in it!”
The actress also told how she’d been impressed by Clint’s “originality” and “uniqueness” when he directed her in Changeling, a real-life tale about a woman whose son goes missing in 1920s LA - and said it made her wonder what his mum must have been like.
“I think [it's] maybe the way he’s been raised,” she joked. “I’ve always been curious about his parents. I think, ‘What must Clint’s mummy have been like?’”
She added: “He’s such a gentleman, such a good man, a great dad to his kids and a great friend. But he’s also very strong, very direct, very much a man in a classic sense of what a man should be.
“He’s that person you want to aspire to be a little bit like.”
Gran Torino opens in the UK in February.

Golden Globes nominations herald start of Oscar race
LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Brad Pitt and Batman are expected to be among the front-runners here Thursday as the race for Oscars glory swings into top gear with the announcement of nominees for the 66th Golden Globes.
Hollywood heart-throb Pitt is vying for honors for his performance in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 short story about a man who ages in reverse.
Director David Fincher’s movie, which sees Pitt star opposite Australian icon Cate Blanchett, does not open in the United States until December 25 but has already wowed critics and audiences at sneak previews.
“I think the presumption among pundits right now is that ‘Benjamin Button’ is the front-runner,” Tom O’Neil, an awards-season expert with the Los Angeles Times’ theenvelope.com, told AFP.
Long-regarded as an indicator of films likely to challenge for top honors at the Oscars, which take place on February 22 next year, the Globes have thrown up a series of red herrings in recent years.
The last movie to achieve the Golden Globes best drama and Oscars best picture double was 2003’s fantasy epic “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
However the Globes, which are chosen by around 80 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and handed out on January 11, can help to shape the overall field and give valuable momentum to front-runners.
While “Benjamin Button” has emerged as the early favorite — receiving another boost on Tuesday with eight nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s annual awards — it faces stiff competition from a glut of other films including blockbuster “The Dark Knight.”

ANGELINA JOLIE - JOLIE: ‘I’M SO PROUD OF BRAD’
ANGELINA JOLIE is “very proud” of partner BRAD PITT’s performance in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, because he was so dedicated to the “trying” film.
The movie, which has already received a Best Director award and has been nominated for several other major honours, centres around Button, who is born with the physical limitations of a man in his eighties and ages backwards.
Filming was hard for Pitt, but it made him appreciate his extended family more, according to Jolie: “As Brad says, it makes you want to call your folks and hug your kids. It makes you think about all the people in your life who have been important to you.”
Jolie couldn’t be more pleased with her partner’s performance, telling Paramount, “I’m very, very proud. Just every day he went to work, how hard he worked, how hard the director worked, just how dedicated they all were.
“It’s been a big process. It was a very trying film. So I’m just happy that it came out so beautifully and that their work is going to be recognised.”
And the Tomb Raider actress can relate to some of the themes running through the movie.
She adds: “It deals with so many aspects of our life. It deals with love and death and friendship and what we’ve learned along the way and the mistakes we make and the things we regret and the things we’re happy we did and we wish we could return to. All those things that make for a beautiful film and I think it has everything in it.”

Brad Pitt marks one year of Making it Right in New Orleans
The first six families have moved into the first six homes built by the Make It Right foundation in the Lower Ninth Ward, the area most devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
A year ago, Brad Pitt’s program, Make it Right, was just born, with the intention to build 150 energy-efficient homes in the place of those washed away by the hurricane. And at the rate that the eco-friendly houses are popping up, a year from now the Lower Ninth Ward will be one of the nation’s largest green communities.
“You’re going to see 100 homes here, mark my words,” Pitt said. “It’s nice to see a few, but I’m anxious to see 100, 150, 1,000.”
The homes are equipped with solar panels to help cut energy costs by up to 75 percent, with other modern details like good ventilation and termite resistance. But despite their innovative technologies, the houses were designed to be reminiscent of the traditional New Orleans homes they’re replacing, with high ceilings and roof-covered porches.
“I’m really happy for the families that are going to be here, but I can’t help but think about the families that aren’t,” he said. “It’s a push-pull for me. The excitement is that it’s being proven, that it’s working. The frustration is that we have a long way to go.”
On the occasion of the premiere of the film that first brought them to town, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt’s been singing New Orleans’ praises: “There’s something magic to New Orleans that has really made this film work.” Button follows the story of a man who ages backwards (much like Mork from Ork), and thematically, it’s about people growing apart.
The movie wasn’t even supposed to be set in New Orleans, the story was set in Baltimore, but the city’s singular character took over. The movie was being filmed in NOLA for the tax breaks, because it was going to be cheap, but now the film Angelina Jolie calls “a love letter to New Orleans” could very well end up boosting the city’s profile. That couple might well be the best thing that ever happened after the worst thing that ever happened to a very special place.

CUTE AS A ‘BUTTON’
December 10, 2008
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt leave the kids behind for a hot date - the LA premiere of Pitt’s movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Brangelina, sharing a laugh on the red carpet of Mann’s Village Theater, made it through the event with nary a hitch. It was a striking contrast with the last time Pitt went to a screening of the epic flick. In November, a bouncer who didn’t recognize the star behind the mustache manhandled Pitt and briefly denied him entry.
I hope Dina has her people watching him.

It’s said that time heals all wounds, even in Hollywood where scabs are created daily and scars can last a lifetime. Because at the Westwood premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, attendees tell me that Brad Grey was praising Steven Spielberg, and the Dreamworks director was praising the Paramount chief’s movie. Amazing since not too long ago, Paramount and DreamWorks were engaged in open warfare. But now that the once married studios have divorced, public civility is returning to their relations. …Although DreamWorks execs still question the delayed release of its Academy Award-buzzed The Soloist until 2009 by distributor Paramount, and suspect it was to lavish even more money and attention on the Oscar campaign for Benjamin Button. (I heard there were even snarky comments made during a recent Soloist marketing meeting on the lot.) And the Paramount people in turn wish that DreamWorks would just get over it already.
But none of that negativism was apparent at Monday night’s premiere, which was a black tie benefit for The Film Foundation (dedicated to preserving motion pictures and protecting the rights of the artists who create them). So here’s what happened inside: Brad Grey walks up to the podium in front and, for once, he’s able to take credit for a Paramount movie instead of staking a claim to DreamWorks films and pissing off bigwigs there. (Who doesn’t remember the fiasco at the Dreamgirls premiere?) Brad welcomes everybody on behalf of Paramount and Benjamin Buttons partner Alan Horn and Warner Brothers. And then thanks everyone who worked on the film. And then surprises the crowd: “It is my distinct pleasure to introduce a board member of The Film Foundation, and one of the greatest directors of all time, my friend Mr. Steven Spielberg.”
Then Spielberg says good evening and, on behalf of the board of The Film Foundation, thanks Brad Grey, John Lesher, and Paramount Pictures; Alan Horn, Jeff Robinov and Warner Bros; and David Fincher, Frank Marshall, Kathy Kennedy, and Cean Chaffin. Spielberg speechifies how he’s happy to be there to support this film and why The Film Foundation means a great deal to him. Yada, yada, yada… Well, then Spielberg ends his remarks by saying “Your coming here will help preserve so many foreign and American classics, including the one you are about to see now, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.”
So there you have it: Steven Spielberg himself gave a major lift to Paramount’s Oscar campaign for its movie. I bet that quote will wind up in New York Times and Los Angeles Times full-page ads by this weekend. Plus, it meant so much to Grey that Spielberg was there that Brad kept gushing about it to people at the after party. So I guess the grudges between Paramount and DreamWorks have gone underground, even Paramount throwing DreamWorks’ potential Oscar competition under the bus. This is why I so love Hollywood.

Ritzy. Who is watching Peeboy besides TMZ. Cakegate took the cake.
There is something unnatural about the way she laughs. Like she is on drugs or ‘happy meds. Her eyes too are empty and soulless. In the other pictures, Brad was looking at her with the look of ‘ enough already, you are looking fake’

Pitt on the paparazzi and his kids’ photos: “One of the things I’m most proud of is that not only did these guys who follow us and make our lives miserable and get in my kids’ faces, not only did they not get the money, but it went to people who really need it.”
Brad Pitt’s priorities have changed, in more ways than one.
“I have this fantasy of my older days, painting or sculpting or making things,” the actor tells Rolling Stone’s next issue, out Friday. “But right now, it’s about getting the work done and getting home to family. I have an adventure every morning getting up.”
Pitt, 44, has six children with partner Angelina Jolie.
His fantasy drama, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, opens Dec. 25. Making the film made Pitt think about his own mortality.
“Angie and I do not fight anymore,” he tells RS. “What occurred to me on this film, and also with the passing of her mother (actress Marcheline Bertrand in 2007), is that there’s going to come a time when I’m not going to get to be with this person anymore. I’m not going to get to be with my children anymore. … And so, if we have a flare-up, it evaporates now.”
He adds, “I don’t want to waste time being angry at someone I love.” And he is defensive about Jolie. When asked about a recent New York Times story critical about her relationship with the press, he responds, “It sounded to me like the story made Angie out to be manipulative in some way. … She is savvy. But one of the things I’m most proud of is that not only did these guys who follow us and make our lives miserable and get in my kids’ faces, not only did they not get the money, but it went to people who really need it.” People and Hello! magazines paid millions to charity for exclusive photos of the Jolie-Pitts after the twins’ births.
“When it came to the birth of our children, a huge bounty was placed on their heads. And people were going to go to incredible lengths to get it.” And so he credits Jolie’s method of handling publicity about the family.
It comes as no surprise, then, that his favorite Jolie film is 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, in which he co-starred. Why? “Because you know … six kids. Because I fell in love.”
