Paper pulls back curtain on its celeb coverage

With a plummeting stock price, dividend cuts, and last week’s decision to mortgage its glimmering midtown headquarters, the New York Times is getting used to bad news.

But getting egg on your face for sloppy reporting in a page-one story? About a couple of celebrities? Criticized by one of your own editors? That’s gotta hurt
.

The brouhaha began Nov. 21, when the Times ran a story by reporter Brooks Barnes headlined “Angelina Jolie’s Carefully Orchestrated Image,” which implied that the “Changeling” star and partner Brad Pitt had negotiated a contract with People magazine that not only netted the couple $14 million for photos of their newborn twins but also included an “editorial plan” ensuring positive coverage for them in future People stories.

Fast-forward to the Times of Dec. 7, which found the Gray Lady’s public editor Clark Hoyt eviscerating the piece. After consulting with official sources –among them People managing editor Larry Hackett and the contract itself, neither of which Barnes got access to — Hoyt heard abject denials of the piece’s claims and found no reference in the pact to any kind of editorial sweetheart deal.

Barnes, it turns out, relied on an unnamed third party for his “scoop.”

Then Hoyt put the hammer down: “I think that unless one of (Barnes’) sources is willing to come forward — on the record — and state firsthand knowledge (of the allegations), the paper needs to correct the impression of a deal it cannot prove.”

Barnes’ continued defense of the piece, said Hoyt, “leaves the Times relying on anonymous sources to dispute on-the-record sources, a questionable position over a story of less than world-shaking import.”

Translation: It’s one thing for Judith Miller to have bought the Bush administration’s claims about Iraq’s WMDs back in 2003, but punked by Brangelina? Come on.

Jen should have unleashed her anger a long time ago with Brad. She is a LIAR. She knew he had feelings for Angie ask CC. Now she lies to try and make AJ look bad. Well what about BP you dimwhit. He is the one who lied to you. I really feel that she thinks that one day he will come back to her because she honestly think he loves her more and is playing house with AJ. Angie never had a convo with her BP did so who lied to her.

Actually, neither Angelina nor Brad lied to x.

What x has confirmed from her recent comments is this:

(a) Brad never told x about what Angelina felt for him.

(b) x suspected that Angelina might like Brad very much during the filming of M&MS - and hello, if those suspicions weren’t confirmed way back in 2005 when x did they VF interview, I’d call her a stupid “bleep”.

Consider:

(1) Way back in 2005, Angelina said that she didn’t know what was going on in Brad’s marriage.

(2) Both Brad and Angelina said they didn’t start anything before the Brad’s and x’s marriage ended. This could mean that neither Brad nor Angelina talked about their feelings for each other. They may have “fallen in love” with each other, may have privately wished that Brad was free but neither may have told the other how they felt. I’m sure almost all of us have been in situations where we have had feelings for another but would not reveal it. You aren’t even sure at that time if the feelings are real or just a “crush”.

(3) Brad spoke to x about HIS feelings. Why would Brad tell x about Angelina’s feelings for him when:

(a) he didn’t know; and

(b) even if he did, it was actually irrelevant to whether his marriage to x could continue or not?

Brad himself said in an interview, that he and x had to be clear about whether or not the relationship between them had gone as far as it could go, before any attraction for Angelina could be addressed.

Brad dealt with his relationship with x in a mature way. He looked at the relationship on hand and regardless of all the noise and all the distractions, he asked himself the right question which is

“what is it that I and x want from this relationship, both to give and receive and are we likely to achieve most of our goals together?”

He took his time reaching this answer, which presumably, x concurred with at the time. Then, Brad and x split up.

So, x wondered if Angelina was attracted to Brad too when Brad told x about how HE felt for Angelina. Now x knows. But so what? Does it mean Angelina and Brad had sex before marriage? NO. Does it mean that Angelina asked Brad to divorce x? NO. Does it mean Brad lied to x? NO.

All x’s recent statements simply confirm for everyone to see is that x is still not over Brad and Angelina. That like her own mother before her, x is still unable to let go of her bitterness and has become the archetypical scorned bunny boiler.

Wow…the crowd was incredible. Not crazed like at the TIFF in 2007 though. Respectful…except for the loud ass ratzi.

Interestingly enough…I just find this picture of the crowd at X’s premiere last night. It’s a vastly different crowd than the J-Ps had…

You know what cracked me up? She didn’t so much as flinch when he touched her. That huge a crowd? Most women would have jumped a mile or at least turned to look over their shoulder to see who was touching them. But Angie knew nobody behind her but Brad would have the gall to touch her…especially when the hand slid across her back to the front toward her breast.
