OlderChristina Milian: Def Jam Dropped Me Because Of Rihanna
Christina Milian is back on her first magazine cover since parting ways with Island Def Jam in 2006.
The 27-year-old singer breaks her silence to Rap-Up on the emotional past two years, her reaction to ex-boyfriend Nick Cannon’s marriage to Mariah Carey, and her brand new album on MySpace Records.
On how she reacted after being dropped from her label: “It was embarrassing. It was a week after my album [So Amazin’] got put out. I would be in my room a lot of the time crying by myself.”
On the reason why she was dropped: “It was a budget cut, I believe. [Def Jam] probably got rid of projects like mine to spend the money on [Rihanna].”
On who inspired her to get back into music: “I bumped into Janet Jackson at a club. We talked for an hour and I was telling her I don’t know if I’m gonna do this, and she was like, ‘Girl, do not let them stop you. I’m a fan and you make good music.’ She’s a person I actually looked up to growing up, so her telling me that really was the day I was like, ‘I’m not gonna let these people
hold me down. It’s time.’”
On learning about ex-boyfriend Nick Cannon’s marriage to Mariah Carey: “I was surprised like everyone else. I was like, ‘Really?’ It just seemed like a weird match, but I was happy for him. I always feel Nick works hard to get what he wants, whether that be women—that’s how he got me.”

@ The haters on here: I’ve been following Christina’s carrer since 2003, I guess you could call me the alpha fan. I’ve seen Christina’s shows live and her music and shows are far from bitter. She has more talent than Def Jam revealed, see can act, dance and singer ass off and does just that. Rihanna is great, I’ll give he that, but that’s because of how much promotion, money and time went into her from Def Jam, they didn’t give Christina enough of that, they expected her to do that all herself. I saw know flyers promoting her album when I went to the WiLD 98.7: WiLD Splash 2006 so that’s saying something. Her promotional team wan’t very good, it’s not her fault. She is a phenomenal artist and that is why I am a fan and a supporter pf her work.
Rihanna’s cute but she can’t sing. Christina is pretty AND can sing. Def Jam should have kept her on!

And a “bitter” woman would have said Def Jam was wack or Nick Cannon was wack. She praised his hardwork and she acknowledged that budget cuts (which all labels are making) were likely the cause of her getting dropped.
I have Christina’s album “So Amazin” and its actually REALLY GOOD. Truthfully, I was shocked at how good it was. So its sux that she’s reduced to a label like MySpace, but hopefully things will pick up for her.

For someone who asked, Christina did pretty well with her singles “AM To PM” (#27 on the Hot 100), “Dip It Low” (#5), and “Say I” (#21).
While she hasn’t been as successful as say, other R&B/Pop artists, I’m just glad she’s continually making new music, films, and other ventures in her life.
Maybe her breakout year hasn’t come yet, or maybe it won’t. It’s all about having a long career in the entertainment world rather than a having a career haunted by a massively successful period (Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men, Alanis Morissette, etc) and then fading into obscurity.
But yeah, once again to her, as well as her Best Actress win (at this year’s Imagen Foundation Awards) for her Christmas film, “Snowglobe”.
Here’s hoping to a third (or more) Grammy nomination next year for when this album comes out. “Dip It Low” really should’ve won for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2005.
