first of all they are not all live.. the are really pre-recorded..
secondly the clapping you hear is orchestrated behind the scenes by a guy who signals the audience not only to clap but also to howl on cue.
thirdly most of the people on those shows are from out of town.

I should know I have been on several shows and I see the same set up over and over again. believe alot goes on. its not live at all.

Sorry to let that secret out. but even the late night tv shows are not done late night..

So when you say the crowd went wild you can definitley count on the engineers hyping up the clapping sound and roars. those shows have not changed
