Obama Tops Gallup’s Annual ‘Most Admired’ List; Hillary Beats Palin, Oprah

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - President-elect Barack Obama is currently the man Americans admire the most in the world, while Secretary of State-designee Hillary Clinton retains the top spot among women for the seventh year in a row, a new poll said on Friday.

According to the annual Most Admired USA Today/Gallup poll, 32 percent of Americans admire Obama the most among all other men in the world. President George W. Bush ranks a far second, with 5 percent, while Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is at third with 3 percent.

Pope Benedict XVI, Rev. Billy Graham and former president Bill Clinton all tie for fourth place at 2 percent each, followed by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Nelson Mandela and Bill Gates. In tenth place with 1 percent is Tibet’s spiritual and political leader, the Dalai Lama.

Obama is the first president-elect to rank first in the list since Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. His rating is also the second-highest ever in the poll’s history, surpassed only by Bush’s 39 percent in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Bush, whose job approval rating at the time was at 86 percent, leaves office after seven years as the poll’s most admired man in his two-term presidency.

Bush was admired the most by only 5 percent of Americans when he was president-elect in 2000, ranking fourth in the poll. His father, former President George H. W. Bush, ranked third with 9 percent in 1988. Clinton was in second place at 15 percent in 1992.

Among women, Secretary of State-designee Hillary Clinton is the woman most admired by Americans for the seventh successive year. Twenty percent choose the former first lady, who is followed in second place by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee. Oprah Winfrey is third at 8 percent, followed by outgoing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The president-elect’s wife, Michelle Obama, is ranked fifth at 3 percent. First Lady Laura Bush ties with Angelina Jolie, a UN Ambassador, at two percent each. Former First Lady Barbara Bush, who was recently hospitalized for an ulcer, is in ninth place. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright shares number 10 with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

The poll was conducted by among 1,008 adults from Dec. 12-14. Its margin of error is 3 percent.

In relation to this new Brad thread, just want to bring my comment from Angie’s thread:

Reading Brad’s “thoughts” about life, I really think that he regretted the years he WASTED the kind of life he had with his former wife. He felt UNPRODUCTIVE both personally and professionally. There was no meaning in his life then. He felt emptiness despite the material wealth, fame & glamour that Hollywood offers.

At least for him, he felt very RELIEVED to realize and to get back his “life” and start anew. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER (on putting that “wastefulness” to a halt)! Enough is enough!!! It was very good for him to really know what he wanted in life and WENT AFTER IT, AGAINST ALL ODDS & INTRIGUES.

What’s interesting about it, during the time of his INITIAL realization, it was the time he also met Angie who herself was in the process of doing something to fulfill her purpose in life, who already knew her desires, who already knew what is important to her, for Mad & her advocacy. The timing was just perfect for both Angie & Brad. As I’ve always believed, they were not looking for love but LOVE MADE IT HAPPEN. It was love which found them. Besides, I really think they are soulmates, they are made & meant for each other!

What he really feels, now that he’s with Angie and the kids, HIS HAPPINESS IS UNSURPASSED that he has ever experienced.

He really feels that the LOVE he has for Angie & kids and the LOVE he receives from them is INCOMPARABLE to any other relationships he got involved with.

And what’s nice about his family with Angie, is they always make sure from time to time they get together with Angie’s brother, Brad’s parents, grandmother, brothers/sister, nephews, nieces. They visit their places too. They see to it that their extended families are still part of their own family.

Now, Brad can look back on his life and can only breathe a sigh of relief but never go back to that “wastefulness” ever again!

He can put a smile on his face now and CHERISH THE IDEA OF FOREVER with his family. I am sure, he will make that happen!!!

Brad is being honest and is just saying what we all suspected all along. He felt his life was empty before he got together with Angelina. I think she has brought him happiness and fulfillment with his family. Good for him - this is what we all strive for in life.

I truly pity Mr. Pitt, who strikes me as a perpetual narcissistic Peter Pan. I also pity Mz. Jolie who fell for the charactor he portrayed in MAMS, and i am sure she will not be so enamoured with the real Mr Pitt once it surfaces. If he were so sincere, caring, and compassionate as he pretends to be ….. he’d have handled his affiar with Jolie while married to anyone at that time, in a more galant and moral manner. It’s always been about publicity for him. Brad is very much in love with Angie and the family to the extend that he is so scared of losing them in one day. If he is not scared, this will not come to his mind. To easy make you understand, for example, you are a car lover, you just bought a car of your life, you will protect that car as much as you can, because you are afraid some accident will

If you bought a second hand car that it does not matter to you, will you have the same thought, you will say, no matter what, so be it, it is so cheap anyway, I’ll get another one. He had long ago made the decision to dump X and they were simply waiting until after the new year to make the announcement. He was more than content to go on that vacay and act like everything was hunky-dory because he knew the end of the road was a mere 10 days away. “I think a lot of it has to do with his family,” Fincher says. “It’s like he wants to cut to the chase and go at the thing, and get it and work it and play with it and then be done with it and live to act another day.”

Oh Lordy Mr.Pitt you were brilliant in TCCOBB.. I cried and i laughed but this was one of the best films i have ever seen. This movie has been called oscar worthy in the many articles i have read lately and now i can relate. Hoping you win that oscar this year you certainly deserve it..
Also love this interview. Brad spoke from the heart about his love for Angie. This put everything into perspective as to why Brad told his audience in early 04 that he didn’t want to have children . He didn’t want a child with his ex b/c the merger was on its last leg.
Brad was kind in 04 in saying no children for us. Saying something to the effect that he wouldn’t be sharing the ex with anyone else.
I was like What?? When he said that not knowing he knew yrs before we did that as long as he stayed with his er friend there would be no children to speak of.
I couldn’t see a man like Brad Pitt who wanted children since his first interview suddenly not wanting them anymore. At the time it didn’t make sense.
HA It sure does now and has for awhile.

So the truth comes out and we get Brads opinion on it which was everything the ex didn’t want the world to know.
His old marriage hit a dead end and was going nowhere. There would be Zero children. Well that says it all. His ex can continue to be jealous of Brads love for Angie but she sounds like a women with no pride… surely desperate.

I guess people will interpret his words however they want to, but when he said “It’s a tragedy in the sense that any love involves loss, and that’s the risk you take.” And “But whatever the course may be, this time together is extraordinary.”, it really sounds to me like he senses a separation on the horizon. I just saw CCOBB and it was the most romantic, funny and mesmerizing movie I have ever seen this year. The visual effects, the make-up, the storyline are worth 2 and 1/2 hours. Thank you JJ for this thread. Shiloh was in this movie for a split second but you can tell it was cute Shi in the arms of her Daddy. What awesome history in the making. He first movie was with her Dad. Brad and Cate deserve the nominations and awards. David Fincher is tops.

Benjamin Button is a GREAT MOVIE.
Run don’t walk and see this beautiful, fascinating and touching movie. BP gave an amazing performance. Taraji(s) was simply awesome as BB “Mother” in the movie. The entire cast was great. I cried and was deeply moved about the themes of love and life in the movie. The cinematography was superb and New Orleans was simply stunning. I highly recommend this movie. It is one of the best movies of the year. Take time out this weekend and see an enriching movie that will leave you reflecting on life and appreciating all that you have. The bitter hens should take the time to see the movie also. I guarantee that they will appreciate what they have and stop whining over a 4 year Hollywood divorce. 5 stars.

On either end of his journey, the director, David Fincher, the writer, Eric Roth, and the star, Brad Pitt, turn a slender F. Scott Fitzgerald short story about a fellow born old who ages backward into a stirring tale of innocence, experience and life lived to the hilt (if the wrong way around). It’s a thrilling, funny, at times heart-rending fusion of authentic feeling and movie magic. A Paramount Pictures publicity release announced an advance New Orleans area screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last month. A nearly mystical, big-budget Hollywood production starring Brad Pitt, much of the film was shot in New Orleans.

The Dec. 1 screening and red-carpet event at the Elmwood Palace 20 was for Benjamin Button’s local cast and crew. Of course, the local cast includes the film’s leading man, part-time French Quarter resident Brad Pitt.

No promises were made that Pitt would attend the event, but he did indeed walk the camera- and reporter-crowded red carpet, along with his companion and fellow movie star, Angelina Jolie.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, having scored multiple Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations and won National Board of Review awards for best director and best adapted screenplay, seems destined for numerous Oscar nominations, not to mention big box office receipts.

Based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald and co-written for the screen by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump), the film stars Pitt as a man who ages from old to young. Cate Blanchett co-stars as the love of Button’s unusual life.

“The movie deals with those things that unite us all, that 95, 90 percent that’s universal about us,” Pitt said on the red carpet. “And that’s our loves and our losses. It’s a lovely film and I’m very happy with it.”

To play the part of the curiously aged Button, Pitt subjected himself to 3 a.m. wakeup calls and hours of prosthetics applications.

“But the joy was being here and telling the story we were telling,” he said. “It really was a no-brainer for me.”

Pitt told the Associated Press that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a love letter to New Orleans. The city, in fact, has never looked more beautiful on film.

“New Orleans speaks for itself and it really speaks loud,” Pitt said.

Jolie, dressed in an ankle-length, figure-accentuating white dress, expressed her appreciation for the city, too.

“We often tell people they should go to New Orleans,” she said. “It’s not an easy place to describe. It’s a unique part of America and it has pretty great people. But you’ve got to go there and experience it.”

The production of Benjamin Button allowed Pitt, Jolie and their six children to stay together at home, or rather one of their homes.

That’s bullshit. The dog flick is doing well because the book has been on the NYT Best Sellers list FOR 4 FREAKING YEARS!!! Do you not have any idea of how many MILLIONS OF COPIES THE BOOK HAS SOLD? Reviewers are barely even mentioning X at all and OW only slightly more often. All the talk is about the book, the book, the book, the book and THE BOOK.

X could have kept her clothes on and her legs closed…and the dog flick would have done well. Added to that the movie has a misleading ad campaign that makes people who don’t know about the book think they’re in for a friendly frisky puppy yarn and 15 minutes of puppy and 95 minutes of OW and X.

M&M is doing good because it is a dog movie. Because it is from a best seller. The studio did not even promote is as an X movie. Of course the media will call it that because the like drama and drama sells so it is X against Brad. Reality is this movie is no different than her other “hits”. Marley sold this movie just as Vince, Ben Stiller and Carney did. Now when her next movie (Traveling) comes out we’ll see is she can open a movie.

The man has said the same things in so may different languages before, the press and some people want to pretend that they do not hear him, so that they can keep selling the dramatic stories. He said the same why he was still living with Jen to let everyone know that the relationship was not working. He said they had different goals and they might not end up together forever if they cannot make the goals meet.
Now this is the real thing to watch for and this has always been the problem.

He said making that movie made him focus on his own mortality and realizing that eventually everybody loses someone they love through death, and the more that person has been loved, the more it hurts to lose them.

My aunt was married to my uncle 64 years before he passed away five years ago. She still misses him.

The haters are losing it. This will be their worst christmas. They didn’t think Brad will ever speak out because he kept quiet for so long while maniston kept attacking Angie at the delight of her fans and some media. I think they are going to have to eat their words, for three reasons:

1) The mutt movie was marketed as a holiday movie. It’s a good tactic to get them into the theaters during the holidays, but holiday movies usually don’t generate much interest once the holidays are over.

2) CCOBB is being marketed as an awards contender. It’s been nominated for several GGs, will probably be nominated for a bunch of SAGs and there is also a lot of Oscar buzz. This will keep fueling interest in the movie well into February, long after everybody is done talking about the mutt movie.

3) Once it hits the foreign theaters, it’s all over. Brad Pitt is extremely popular overseas, whereas nobody outside of Great Britain and the US gives a tin sh*t about Aniston.

Here’s the truth: I cried twice during “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” I’ve only cried during three other movies in my life: “Rudy,” “The Green Mile” and “Weekend at Bernies II.” (But I had my own issues going on during that last movie.)

Tears aside, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is my favorite movie of the year. The story of a backward-aging man and all his little adventures tracing through the 20th century is ridiculously compelling. Credit strong source material: A short story penned by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the 1920s. Add spot-on performances by Pitt, who plays Button, as well as Cate Blanchett, who plays the ballerina who captures his heart. And finally, David Fincher’s direction is 180 degrees from his previous collaborations with Pitt – “Se7en” and “Fight Club.” The usually macabre moviemaker deftly creates a poignant and meloncaly tale without sociopathic undertones this time around.

As movie critic Jeffrey Lyons tells us, this is a movie you won’t want to miss.

Written by the same screen writer as “Forest Gump”, and taken from an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is a sweeping, do-not-miss epic about one of the 20th century’s most amazing fictitious characters.

Born in New Orleans in 1918, Brad Pitt plays a man who, at birth began growing but aging in reverse. He was born with an old man’s body and aged backwards.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is in the mode of “Forest Gump” all right. A novel which absorbs you from first frame to last and it’s one of those rare movies which lives up to all the early hype.

In fact, it’s a sure Oscar nominee for Best Picture, title player Brad Pitt and supporting player Cate Blanchett.

I think you’re not likely to see a finer film this year.

I think they are going to have to eat their words, for three reasons:

1) The mutt movie was marketed as a holiday movie. It’s a good tactic to get them into the theaters during the holidays, but holiday movies usually don’t generate much interest once the holidays are over.

2) CCOBB is being marketed as an awards contender. It’s been nominated for several GGs, will probably be nominated for a bunch of SAGs and there is also a lot of Oscar buzz. This will keep fueling interest in the movie well into February, long after everybody is done talking about the mutt movie.

3) Once it hits the foreign theaters, it’s all over. Brad Pitt is extremely popular overseas, whereas nobody outside of Great Britain and the US gives a tin sh*t about Aniston.

Great list, and I hope Chinnifer’s fans would realize why X NEVER does overseas promotion for her movies. The last time she was overseas, was shortly before Pee-body and hers first break up, as she was chasing him around the world at one of his shows trying to make it work.

I recall when Brad married Jennifer, he said he didn’t think it was possible for love to last forever. He’s had a few relationships in his life and I expect him to have more. Maybe he’s like a lot of people who get a rush from falling in love and once he gets bored, he moves on.

I think you underrate his feelings by saying once he gets bored, these two people did therapy sessions like the Arquettes, things did not work out, they don’t agree on most things. Read Brad and Jen’s interview, Brad says 7 kids, she says 2 at most, Brad loves architecture, she makes fun of the furniture and so on and so forth… They just never agreed on most things together.

I didnt know existed till a minute ago. They are obviously quite friendly and comfortable with each other.

Last night we were speculating that Brad’s movie would do better overseas than the dog movie…but after doing some investigating I may have to revise my opinion.

I knew the book was huge in the States, but I didn’t know how well it sold worldwide. By April of this year the book had sold BETWEEM 4 AND 5 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE. Apparently it’s been very popular in the U.K., Australia, NZ. So look for big numbers from those places. I don’t suppose we could get fortunate enough to have X actually leave the country to do promo abroad, huh?

Hollywood’s golden couple BRAD PITT and JENNIFER ANISTON have flatly denied reports in a German magazine that they’re expecting their first baby.

Press reports that the newlyweds were starting a family have been swirling for the past few weeks. Now, in the new German edition of MARIE CLAIRE, pin-up Pitt is quoted as saying,

“Number one is already on the way. Now we’re just hoping that everything goes well. ” But the couple’s publicists have come forward to deny the claims and the report’s writer has blamed the misunderstanding on mistranslation.

Pitt’s publicist CINDY GUAGENTI is insisting the story is false and has requested a retraction from the magazine. Aniston’s spokesperson STEVEN HUVANE also denied the FRIENDS star was pregnant and said he was seeking an explanation from Marie Claire.

They’re a couple who once described themselves as “phone junkies,” keeping up a constant patter even when an ocean lay between them. But last week Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston found themselves picking up the phone—together—to do the most difficult dialing of their 4½-year marriage. One by one they called relatives, close friends and business associates to break the news that would become public on Jan. 7: They had decided to separate. Yet the calls did not have the teary, pass-the-tissues tone that such heartbreaking news might suggest. Pitt “didn’t want people to think the separation is a bad thing,” says a friend of the couple’s. “He emphasized that they were in a good place. The decision was good for them. They’re getting along. They really care about each other.”

To be sure, almost as shocking as the news of the split is the extraordinarily civil manner in which Hollywood’s golden couple—whose romance seemed to so successfully straddle A-list glamor and down-to-earth fun—have approached it. “They still love each other,” says a source close to Aniston and Pitt. “The separation is a step back to see if their relationship is going to be forever or if it’s not. They’re searching for the answer, which is not an easy one to come up with.” And, observes the source, “they’re still very close.”

She made it clear, for a long time, that he wasn’t her “type.” He would have followed her to kanga-roo-ville to keep her. Of late, she loves the great dad he has become. Finally, they both seem to say that they love each other. The chase is over. They’ve caught each other and have used a ton of kids to do so. Now, the children are the funniest people they know and that they are having fun…reality check, folks! What happens when they aren’t so funny and fun to be with? Who or where will each go for solace? “Whatever the course may be,” is about as stable, predictable and reliable as those children have ever known. They seem to be living on a roller coaster threatening to careen into self-described chaos, every other day. All of this is good because…?

“They seemed more like they were on a first date.” As the couple left the club, they spotted photographers outside. “They put their arms around each other and had these big smiles on their faces like they were incredibly happy,” says the observer. “It was the opposite of the couple I’d seen inside.”

So what went wrong exactly? According to several sources, it became increasingly difficult for the couple to balance work and family. Ever since they exchanged lavishly romantic wedding vows in July 2000, they have been dogged by the Baby Question (see box). As recently as last month, Pitt told Diane Sawyer of his hopes for the near future. “God, I’m going to say it: Kids. Family. I’m thinking family. Yeah. I got family on the mind.” Although Aniston has expressed similar desires in the past, one source who recently spoke to the actress notes, “She has been resisting having a child for a number of reasons. One was her career. Also, she wanted to make sure that [the marriage] would last. There was a little doubt that crept in. He was much more interested in having a child. I think it was Jen that broke it off. He was a half step behind her.”

Beyond baby issues, the couple also grappled with rumors of a fling between Pitt and Angelina Jolie, 29, his onscreen spouse in this summer’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith (see box). Such reports have been dismissed by both stars, and a source who worked with Pitt says, “Brad is a very monogamous person. He’s always been with one woman. He doesn’t stray.”

And yet the same source notes that Pitt, who bonded with both the actress and her 3-year-old son Maddox, “was influenced by [Jolie]“—particularly her humanitarian efforts. “He changed,” says the source. “It might be slight, but it’s noticeable. And Jennifer knew it.” Even casual Pitt watchers might have noticed the actor’s newly displayed gravitas: In recent months he has used his star status to help promote Sen. John Kerry’s presidential bid, stem-cell research and, on a November trip to Africa, AIDS relief. (He plans to return to Africa in the near future.) Beyond Mr. and Mrs. Smith, he has no upcoming films on tap, preferring instead to focus on his nonshowbiz pursuits. “It seems like Brad is having an Oprah moment,” says an industry source. “Everything for him is not about Hollywood right now.”

His wife, on the other hand, is squarely in moviemaking mode. Having wrapped 10 seasons on Friends last spring, she currently has at least half-a-dozen big-screen projects in the works. “In many ways, her career is just starting,” says the industry source. “The timing is off for them.”

Even without their diverging career paths, the pressures of fame associated with two such high-wattage stars have taken their toll in the years since the pair were first introduced in 1998. “It’s not a career issue or an issue of spending too much time apart,” says a source close to the couple. “The issue is about them as individuals. They both need to reconnect to who they were before they met and married. They’ve changed in the years they’ve known each other. They live in a fishbowl. They spend so much time trying to figure out how to behave while everyone’s looking that they gradually lost sight of themselves as individuals. And despite their nice lifestyle and having everything they might want, they weren’t happy. They lost a sense of self.”

Now it seems that they may have lost each other as well. Or maybe not. As the inevitable questions arise about who gets what and where they go from here (see box), those close to them say the end of Brad and Jen has yet to be written. “They need to regroup,” says one source. “If they’re meant to be back together, they’ll figure that out. If not, they still love each other. They’re in a peaceful place.”

The Way They Were

Matt Damon summed it up best, even if the syntax went a bit astray. Brad and Jen, he said, “are the couple you want to be.” Young, lean, sexy, blond—that describes each of them apart. United, they had a special bond, a relaxed chemistry that generated a nice, soft glow. To look back at them now is to sigh a little: Pity, isn’t it, things just didn’t work out.

That **** can continue individually as Jennifer has proven, but as a couple, and espcially when one of you wants more out of life than the vanity allowed a celebrity, you are not going to last. This is why Angelina Jolie didn’t wreck ****. The foundation was built on Malibu sand and any wave weak or strong was gonna crash it all on it’s own in due time.

So some dad and his son were at the Riverview and watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and talking, because they were at the Riverview, where talking during the movie is a tradition.

But then this other guy gets all pissed, like yelling “OMG Brad Pitt is youngifying and you are talking over it!” Then the guy starts throwing some popcorn at the son, which is also not unheard of at the Riverview. Then there was some discussion.

Then the dude shot the dad in the arm.

Then the dude sat back down to watch the movie, like “Okay now where were we, oh yes, Benjamin just keeps getting younger! This is indeed a curious case. Wonder when they’ll pay the Arcade Fire song.”

Why are they constantly bombarding anyone who will listen with the intimate details of their relationship? As they gag and spew all over magazine covers, each continues to offer back hand slaps to JA. The “dishing duo” can’t contain themselves as they comment on a time of life and a marriage that Aniston shared. They keep on dredging and dishing so that JA continues being asked to comment. Somebody tell the mad press hounds that DISCRETION is the better part of valor. Remember Princess Di? ” Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded. …” God bless all women scorned!

catey, Angelina never made it clear that Brad was not her type. They said nothing whatsoever for a year after they got together. Angelina has said that she loved Brad in the every interview she has given since they got together, and that she plans to spend the rest of her life with him. She has never wavered. Brad has given very very few interviews since they got together. But in every one of his interviews this year he has spoken of his love for Angelina and for their children. He has said that his life is enriched by his family, that he can’t wait to get home from work.

Now for some reason you are threatened by them. They may not last a lifetime, who knows what anyone’s future holds. But in the here and now, they are very much together and very much in love. They have formed a family they are both quite proud of. They both speak of more children. They both support the other no matter what. Angelina has said that she plans to work less and less in these her prime career years, to take more time off and nurture her family.

David Fincher who has known Brad for many years, says for Brad it is all about his family. This is what his friend sees.

Why do you have such a problem with this couple? What inner demon possesses your mind and closes your heart? They will soon be together as long as his failed deadend marriage lasted, what will you say then?

catey, Dustin Hoffman said in an interview just last week that he and his wife Lisa and their (4) kids travelled with him to all his film shoots, they refused to be separated. He said that why should he be away from his family if he could make arrangements not to be?

Is this not what Brad and Angelina both say, is this not their law, to keep the family together?

I find this totally endearing. There is no chaos, just the way this family lives.
