OlderKanye West: I Want Fewer Fans
Kanye West takes the February 2009 cover of Vibe. Here’s what the 31-year-old Grammy winner had to say (via MTV):
On if he’s comfortable with fame: “I made a decision. I wanna make popular music, but I want less fans. I want the freedom of having less fans. It’s like the freedom of having less money. If you have less money, you have less responsibility. It’s like Björk. If she wanted to pose naked, you’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s Björk.’ But if I wanted to pose naked, people would draw all type of things into it. I definitely feel like, in the next however many years, if I work out for two months, that I’ll pose naked. I break every rule and mentality of hip-hop, of black culture, of American culture.”
On giving praise where it is due: “I believe Beyoncé is the greatest performer of our generation. I believe I am the greatest entertainer of this generation. I go neck-and-neck on Jay-Z and [Lil] Wayne as far as who’s the best lyricist. Jay-Z has longevity.”

Kanye is just is a really strange person like a lot of musicians can be. I do like some of his songs and music and producing. I do get amused at people’s extreme reactions to the things he says though.
Just like I was amused that he said Beyonce was the greatest of our generation. lol. I wouldn’t give any artist that title as of yet including Britney Spears.
The music industry is a bunch of crock and only a handful of people get pushed by the record companies. And the record companies are owned by tv stations etc etc. I have nothing against Beyonce but really there is no real competition to compare her to. Just like it’s no real competition to compare Britney to. One person is “picked” and “pushed” to be the “it” person of their genre for a span of time and it’s all down hill from there.
Britney is the new Madonna and Beyonce is the Black Pop/R&B singer yada yada yada. Beyonce and Britney aren’t anything new nor are they doing anything innovative. They sing and shake their behinds like some trailblazers before them…. nothing new.They both have been very persistent in making it so I give them props for that. And I do like some of both of their material just depending on my mood. Actually, I think Jennifer Hudson has a better voice than beyonce but she doesn’t shake her ass so ……….
Sorry Kanye you naming people as the greatest entertainers of our generation isn’t saying much considering the trite music business that has gotten more generic than the 70s 80s and 90s. Just hot air ….stick to your music dude.
