Cristiano Ronaldo is the FIFA Player of the Year
Cristiano Ronaldo is pictured receiving his World FIFA Player Of The Year trophy from Sir Alex Ferguson in Manchester, UK on Wednesday (January 14).
“This is a prize that has always been an ambition of mine ever since I started playing football,” Ronaldo said. “But when I started at Sporting Lisbon six years ago I never imagined it would come so quickly.”
The 23-year-old soccer player received 935 votes in a worldwide poll of national team captains and coaches, with the results announced by Brazil’s all-time great Pele.
“It is an overwhelming moment, a very special moment in my life,” Ronaldo said. “I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be fired off now.”

He did not receive the trophy from Ferguson; this is just a photo op. He got it on Monday at a gala at FIFA headquarters in Switzerland.
