I hadn’t heard about the Bielski brothers either before the film was made. And then when the film reviews appeared, some mentioned the massacre, and criticised the fact that the film didn’t mention it. I was wondering if either the scriptwriters hadn’t done their research properly and didn’t know about it before the film came out, or, because as yet it hasn’t been proven that the Bielskis or members of their group were involved in the massacre, they decided to leave it out. After all, innocent until proven guilty…

I also felt the film could have been better, and I liked it a lot. I think it was very good. But there was something missing, and I am still trying to work out what it was. After all,the film showed that the Bielskis were no saints - in fact, nobody in the film was - that they could be brutal and ruthless when it was necessary, that Tuvia was both compassionate and authoritarian, that Zus went out to fight and got disillusioned with the Russian partisans, it asked what is more important, revenge or saving lives - or can you have both - there were so many questions and shades of grey…still, something was missing.

I don’t know much about the director, so why do you think he wasn’t the best person for the job?

Yes, with me it’s a kind of feeling as well. I suspect Spielberg would have made the film more dramatic, and might even have pushed the heroic side of the characters more to the forefront, which I might not have liked…

I’ve been thinking…maybe it’s the balance between drama and understatement that Zwick and his scriptwriters didn’t quite get right. Some of Tuvia’s speeches just sounded cliched and nearly too Hollywood-ish for such a person, and other scenes were too toned down - I nearly expected more drama. I don’t know, but when I saw the film for the second time, I had a feeling that I only then grasped some of the emotional intensity which Daniel Craig portrayed in his character. I mean, that’s what he’s so good at - DC can show a whole range of emotion and inner conflict with his eyes or his posture, but sometimes he’s so (British) understated, that unless a film brings it out, a viewer might miss what he is trying to tell us.

I liked the how the camera jumped between the wedding scene and the attack on a German patrol - it showed the contrast between the paths that the two brothers Tuvia and Zus had chosen. One focused on keeping the spirit in the forest camp going - making a life for the people, the other one on fighting evil. It looked slightly surreal that the people in the forest could still celebrate in those awful times, but then that’s what people do - and maybe when you know that your life might be cut short tomorrow, you want to live more intensely in the time that you have…

I think Robert Mitchell finanaced FOAF. I think Satsuki’s father has something to do with the Army - that was mentioned in an article awhile back and her mother does not speak english.
