Chanel Iman Covers Page Six Magazine

Chanel Iman Covers Page Six Magazine

Meet Chanel Iman. She’s the protégée of Tyra Banks and favorite of designers John Galliano and Alexander McQueen and she’s determined to shake things up with her vibrant personality, cheeky tattoos and modern attitude toward race.

Here’s what the 19-year-old fashion model, who was named after legendary designer Coco Chanel and Somali supermodel Iman, had to say in this week’s issue of Page Six Magazine:

On rumors she has been involved with Kanye West, rapper Tyga, and singer-producer Ryan Leslie: “I’m young and I’m dating. But I’m not gonna say any names. There are special people in my life but nothing serious. Just having a man in general is a job! I have one job; I can’t have a second. I’m the type of girl that if I have a man, I want to be a good girl-friend and be there for them and take care of them.”

On her close relationship with Tyra Banks: “She keeps it real. She tells it like it is. She’s really been a great mentor for me.”

Page Six Magazine is free inside the Sunday edition of the New York Post and online on Monday. More quotes and bigger cover pic inside, check it out!

Chanel Iman - “Page Six Magazine” Interview

On the rigors of working New York Fashion Week: “Honestly, I try to forget Fashion Week once it’s over. I just want to go home and rest and just forget I even did it. It could drive you crazy! It’s just show after show after show, and you’re missing your family and they feel really far away. You don’t go to sleep. You work for a month. You spend all this time trying on clothes… what drives me the most crazy is people touching me all the time. That does get weird.”

On how she ended up naming her Maltese “Louis Dior”: “I really loved working with [Dior designer] John Galliano—he’s so amazing. He actually let me name my dog Dior. I asked him! Right after I bought my puppy, I flew to Paris and John was the first designer that I saw. So I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t have a name for my puppy, so is it OK, John, if I name him Dior?’ He said, ‘It would be my honor.’ So I took a picture of me and my dog and sent it to him. He loved it.”

On her frustrations at the difficulties that models of color face in the industry: “It’s not just black girls. It’s ethnic girls in general: Brazilian girls, Hispanic. You really don’t see a lot of Asians either. A lot of designers think that if every girl on the runway looks exactly alike, then people will come to the shows and buy the clothes because they won’t be focusing on the models….It’s not even just runway either… us ethnic girls should be getting a lot of the covers too! I would love to be on half of the campaigns these [white] girls are booking, all looking exactly alike. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”

I wish her the best. I hope she succeeds. Shesounds like a bright woman.

# 8

OMG I HATE HER. Shes very arrogant and in general just a un intelligent teenager who thinks she deserves to be where she is. Shes a talented enough model i guess, but its like shes just not grateful for her incredible success and beleives shes entitled to it.

Please dont post about her. I beg you jared.

and BTW chanel—- all the brazilan models are WHITE. (raquel, caroline, bruna, cintia)

How tacky and ridiculous and unoriginal to have your name be copied after a brand name and a supermodel. I think I’ll name my daughter Oprah Target. That’s “Oprah Tarzhey”!! She sounds like she should be a second rate drag queen. Poor girl.

on that angle she looks like kimora lee simmons

Uh apparently WHAT knows nothing about brazil. Brazilians are like americans, they’re not just white, they’re an array of different ethnicities. Stop being an idiot.

i’ve seen better (and darker) pictures of her before. she kinda has those angelyne lips going on here. remember the days when models didn’t speak and just did their job? yeah, i’m thinking she should maybe go back to that day and age.

I just don’t understand why they have to BLAST her with lights to lighten her up. I mean, I’m a photographer and I try to keep it as close to skin tone as possible but stuff like this really makes me sad.

yeah but WHAT is talking specificly about the successful brazilian MODELS that are around right now, like the girls in parenthesis that i named. Which you prob know nothing about. Not saying all brazilians are white, just the big brazilian models. It was dumb of chanel to say that.

she’s ugly. very ugly. and it’s not the pics.

I wonder: WHO’S CHOICE WAS THIS?
anyway, there is still a madhouse’room “waiting”, folks!!

she is SOOOOO beautiful! I love her. she’s absolutely stunning.

there is no one like Chanel Iman.

Chanel Iman was not named after the supermodel Iman (although that’s a pretty easy go-to answer to the question of what/who she was named after)!

She has said it in interviews herself, the “Iman” part of her name was from a relative (a cousin, to be specific) whom she was named after.

Hmmm….I have never seen or heard of her, but she does not look at all attractive to me in this pic.
Also, she needs to know that life is not fair. Her whinning about the ethnic girls not getting jobs gets old. As Obama would say….’get in there and change it’. I know I am not going to change it for you honey.

That was precisely her point. Why in a country famous for his various ethnicities, the only supermodel from this country are the european type?
Same for Hispanic:when you got a spanis supermodel,it’s an Esther Canadas (blond blue eyed doll), not very exotic.

Chanel is pretty but these aren’t the right pics. If you get a chance to look at a photoshoot she did for Vogue back in May or April 2007 (its the cover with different models in white or blue skirts) those were some really nice pics. Nice to see that Jared is posting about models instead of Speidi for a change.

LolaSvelt @ 01/23/2009 at 5:31 am

What’s up with the name? A mix of a well-known designer and another model? Yeah, she’s not going to last.

The White brazilian models are usually of ethnic Italian or German descent and of course it is mostly Europeans who control the modelling world. However, they do have women of color models from Brazil, such as, Adriana Lima and Camilia Alves who are both mixed race Pardo people. There is only one or two Chinese models known .

Chanel is right. Brazil claims African culture, they love the drums the carnival the dances… but try to find a black model who is Brazilian. Blue eyed blonds or European and native mixes only. Most openly racist place I’ve ever been.
