OlderOscar Nominations 2009 List
Forest Whitaker and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announce the nominations for the 2009 Academy Awards held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Wednesday (January 22) in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button picked up the most honors, racking up 13 noms including best pic. Slumdog Millionaire followed with 10 nods.
Brad Pitt earned a Best Actor nomination (Benjamin Button) and Angelina Jolie picked up a nod for Best Actress (Changeling). Heath Ledger was nominated for Supporting Actor on the one-year anniversary of his death for The Dark Knight.
The Oscar ceremony will be hosted by Hugh Jackman on February 22 at LA’s Kodak Theater.

I haven’t heard one interview where Kate has talked about Angelina, and I’ve watched her on EVERYTHING! I love them both (Angie and Kate) and think both performances were worthy of noms. I hate that Revolutionary Road wasn’t nominated for anything else. I SO wanted to see Leo there, but Brad’s Benjamin Button was nominated for it ALL! I’m so proud of you BRADLEY!!!
Where are the rest of the nominations? Editing, sound, sound f/x editing, score, song, cinematography? Plus some I’m totally forgetting?

While I don’t think RDJ will win, I am happy to see he got recognized for his role in Tropic Thunder. It was not only the most hilarious turn of the year, but he was absolutely convincing.
I’m also a little surprised Josh Brolin didn’t get recognition for his role as Dubya. But he is recognized nonetheless. Otherwise, it seems all are deserving and it looks like my next few weeks will be busy seeing some of these movies I have yet to catch

I’m disppointed that “Revolutionary Road” was practically shut out. Nice nom for Michael Shannon though, but snubs in the actor, actress and director categories came as bit of a surprise. That’s entertainment for ya. In the great scheme of things, these nominations, or those lack thereof, are going to do nothing to change my life. I must go back to work!

I think that Leo is not nominated because really he was not that good in RR! I don’t know, watching him and Kate - I didn’t like them together in that movie, all I could think about is Titanic! They are great actors but together they will always be a couple from Titanic! And why are you so rude? This is for Brad Pitt second time to be nominated, first time as Best Actor, and he was GREAT in Benjamin Button! Amazing! I think that finally Brad Pitt is an actor and not a pretty face! I am so happy for Angelina also, I just loved her in Changeling, beautiful movie indeed!

This is a pretty good list. I’m glad The Reader is there for Best Picture instead of TDK. TDK was like a video game. It made a lot of money and Heath will probably win for that movie. That’s enough.

Despite the Academy’s obvious snubbing of “Revolutionary Road,” I am happy to see Michael Shannon’s nomination for supporting actor. What an amazing talent he is! And while it will almost certainly go to Heath Ledger, I hope people do not forget the amazing performances of his fellow nominees.
Sean Penn’s performance in “Milk” is timeless, and shouldn’t be overlooked because of the Golden Globes’ choice of Mickey Rourke (who is also amazing)!
And I don’t know a single person (except Catty Cathy above) who would disagree with Kate Winslet’s performance in “The Reader” of being deserving of this award. Go Kate! And though I love Merryl and Anne both, Kate has long been overlooked and this performance as Hanna in “The Reader” is so transcendent of the other nominees. I can only hope she takes it home!

But why The Reader and not Revolutionary Road? I loved her performances in both movies but…I hope that’s not the reason she won’t get an Oscar again this year.

I’m also sorry that J. Michael Straczynski, the guy who wrote the Changeling screen play didn’t get a nod for best original screenplay as it seems he did a mighty fine job.

FYI Kate is a no-nonsense, professional woman just like Angie who only does movies cos its a job that allows her to do what she loves. Just like Angie. And than he went in her direction and became a model more than a player. I also don’t understand how people in US can be so rude towards Jolie-Pitt, they are the biggest stars today and they are doing so much good things to all people! Just go and see Angie work for UN! Amazing! They are always nice to fans and I just like them so much! When Angelina was here in Prague making Wanted everyone from my country who met her said that she is wonderful, polite and nice! I love them both and I am happy that their work is recognised!

As for the Best Actor winner - predict Frank Langella or Richard Jenkins will win. I think Mickey & Sean will cancel each other out. BOTH have a lot of enemies in the Academy. I wouldn’t have been suprised if Mickey Rourke had been snubbed altogether. He burned A LOT of bridges in HW, pissed off the wrong people and made a lot of enemies. People in HW have long memories and hold grudges like a mofo. Also, there are a lot of old fogies in the Academy and they may also balk at giving Mr. Anarchy - Sean Penn - a second Oscar. So a surprise winner isn’t out of the realm of possibility…

Wow…you’re right! I just went back and looked at the list. I didn’t realized he hadn’t gotten nominated. A lof of the awards gurus thought he was a shoe-in. Instead the writers of Happy Go Lucky, Frozen River & In Bruges were nominated (along with Milk and Wall-E). Wall-E? I’m sorry, but cartoons DO NOT belong in some of these categories. They can call it “animated” all they want but it’s just a 2 hour cartoon to me.

I didn’t forget. Brad didn’t have as much at stake as Leo did. The ass he and Brad Grey handed the movie off to - Graham King - didn’t even mention Brad in his acceptance speech. Brad Grey barely got a mention either after his failed campaigned to have his name added to the producer list for that movie. Both Brads did all the grunt work to make that movie happen and neither got thanked or acknowledged. So, no, I didn’t forget about The Departed. Leo would have benefitted from a Best Actor win a hell of a lot more than Brad would have as a producer.

Titanic is a better movie in my opinion. it was a chick guys could like. The Dark Night is just a Batman movie, very good but not “a masterpiece” and it doesn’t connect to all audiences and people. The only reason it grossed so much is because of Ledger’s death(even though he preformed very well) When you watch Titanic, you don’t just watch it, you experience it. I doubt it will beat Titanic with it’s release to the cinema’s again, it was short by nearly 100 million, plus TDK was only nominated for 8 Oscars, Titanic=nominated for 14 Oscars.

I have to say, I think the best picture nominations are a little bias towards movies that came out towards the end of the year. Why is it that all of the films listed were released in the Fall or Winter of 2008?

It’s b.s. The Dark Knight wasn’t nominated for best picture. But you know in the end it’s the movie everyone wanted to see. It’s the movie everyone will want to rent or buy. You can tell the best supporting actor category is hurting when Robert Downy Jr. is nominated out of Tropic Thunder. Heath Ledger is probably the best choice, but not by a lot over PSH. Heath will however win by a landslide for obvious reasons.
Those who think the dark knight should have been nominated would probably also make a case for rocky IV or red dawn. come on people. have you seen any good films this year. The dark knight had a purpose and that was to MAKE $. The first one was better and it will not be that memorable if Heath had not died from that tragic incident. To put batman in the same sentence with slumdog is a disgrace to the film industry.
Wow, I totally called this one like a month ago. The Dark Knight, second highest grossing movie in America of all time, gets ONE oscar nomination, even though that piece of crap number one grossing movie, the titanic, set the record for oscar wins. and the curious case of benjamin button, as i predicted, is on up and down the boards. I know Heath Ledger will get screwed out of the best supporting actor oscar too. The third Lord of Rings movie won best picture before and the Dark Knight isn’t even nominated for it? Ridiculous. The academy are a bunch of total hacks.

Why does everyone keep saying that? If Health Ledger was alive today, he would still overwhelmingly deserve the pick for best supporting actor. I’ll even go so far to say he should be in the running for Best Actor, because he was the star of that movie. I’ve seen that movie a bunch of times now, and i still have trouble believing its Health Ledger. When i first heard Health Ledger was going to be playing the role that Jack Nicholson completely rocked, I thought “wow, that’s ridiculous there’s no way Health Ledger can play an off the wall psychotic super villian better than Jack Nicholson”. But sure enough, Health Ledger destroyed Jack Nicholson’s preformance. I guarantee you half the people here who say Health Ledger will win just because he’s dead or that Dark Knight didn’t deserve a best pic nominaton are just a bunch of go-against-the-grain hate-whats-being-raved type people. At the very least this movie deserved a nomination

**** the Oscars. The best film since the ’70s didn’t get a single nomination. People are beginning to see how much the Oscars suck. Think about this, he wasn’t nominated for Dirty Harry either, but that performance is remembered today by more people than whoever the hell was nominated.
Clint wasn’t nominated for best actor for Dirty Harry either. Gene Hackman won for The French Connection. Other nominees were Peter Finch in Sunday Bloody Sunday, Walter Matthau in Kotch, George C. Scott in The Hospital, and Topol in Fiddler on the Roof.
These are all great performances, but I gurantee that more people have seen Clint’s iconic portrayal of Dirty Harry than have seen every one of them combined.
My point? This has happened before, and it proves that once again the Oscars are truly meaningless to real film fans.
Brad should not be nominated. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was an extremely mediocre movie, and Brad was no where near oscar-worthy for his role. Leo should have been nominated in his place for sure. Neither him or Angelina will win.

Brad should not have been nominated. His performance was no where near oscar worthy. The Curious case of benjamin button was extremely mediocre and should not have been nominated for best picture. it wont win. it was quite frankly, a boring movie. Leo should have been nominated in Brad’s place, no questions asked. Also, the dark knight deserved to be nominated for best picture, because it definitely the best picture of 2008.
Gran Torino was the best film of the year. Hell, of the decade.

Yeah it’s too bad Leonardo has been snubbed so many times. Happy for kate though, as much as I love Anne and Meryl, Kate deserves it. Anne is very young and still is young and is a great actress so I’m pretty sure she’ll get another nomination, plus it’s hard to be nominated for your first Oscar and win it. i know Angelina Jolie has done that, though. Rev. road was amazing. Can’t believe it only got 3 noms. No doubt, kate will win this year. Hopefully, Leo will win one of those suckers in 2010(Next Academy Awards)

Seriously, I don’t get the Heath Ledger thing. The man is DEAD! Sure he did a good job, so did Frank Sinatra, should we give him an Acadamy Award and possibly and Oscar now? NO!!! Give Heath an honorable mention or moment of silence if it pleases you, but there are other people that deserve that award and they are actually aware of the fact that they have won it.
HEATH LEDGER ‘09! Us Aussies admire him and he inspires me. He only started acting in school because he had to either do acting or cooking ( no hope for cooking). If he was going to become a pro actor he had to quit hockey, and if he had nothing to do with acting he would hav become a pro hockey player. The best movie that Heath has been in that shows off his personality and who he really is, try watching 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU.
