Jake Gyllenhaal Gets a Haircut!

I am always amazed how people stupidly get themselves forced into jury duty. Almost all people when asked if they have any prejudices, say no they don’t. That they are completely impartial and have no preconceptions. That’s a sure way to get roped into jury duty. So stupid.

Juries in the US are chosen from the population in general, of adult age. You are in the pool of people if you are registered to vote. Then you are chosen by lot (random selection). You then must appear at the court to be examined by the judge who will preside over the trial. This is called the Voire Dire (I think that is the term, not absolutely sure). The judge will ask you if you have any “prejudices” that might prevent your giving an impartial opinion. You need to say that you do not and are impartial in all respects. Then twelve people are selected and they listen to the evidence presented at trial and when the sides have finished they retire and come to a decision. Of course some trials in the US involve only a judge or a panel of judges but many important cases require a jury. A decision by ordinary citizens is thought to be more valid than one by judges alone in many respects. The problem is that ordinary citizens can be stupid or easily duped and make bad decisions. This is how O J Simpson was exonerated when he was obviously clearly guilty of murder.

Hollywood actor JAKE GYLLENHAAL is facing jury service in Los Angeles as part of an upcoming misdemeanour battery trial. The star was seen checking in at an L.A. court on Tuesday (27Jan09) as part of the jury selection process.
Gyllenhaal was allowed to go through voir dire, court questioning to determine juror suitability, in a private room, according to TMZ.com.
The 28-year-old will return to court on Wednesday (28Jan09) to find out whether he has been picked.
Madonna was considered for jury service in the city last year (08), but was dismissed by the judge during the selection process.
Actors Forest Whitaker and Don Cheadle also managed to escape the civic duty, while Steve Carell was elected to serve on a jury during an employment dispute case in January last year (08).

I suspect Jake, like most celebrities, doesn’t much like being trapped in hum drum everyday situations of the sort that most people have to put up with. Hence his kicking the shins (?) of the pap who tried to talk to him outside the courthouse. I presume he made it clear to the judge that his being selected would be disruptive to the trial. Or he was dismissed for some other reason we will never learn about.

Jury can be totally wrong … but they are Vox Populi…
It is very hard when accused has to give his life to twelve people who have to choose about his destiny.. without even knowing a law.

It is interesting to note that Jake was so irritated that when he went to go into the building he pushed on the door. But he should know by now that all exit doors in the USA open from the inside out (in case of fire so people can easily get out) and not the other way. This made him even more angry and he took it all out on the pap who was taking pictures of him. LOL
