Kellogg’s Dumps Michael Phelps

Kellogg’s Dumps Michael Phelps

Cereal maker Kellogg’s is the first sponsor to dump Olympic champion Michael Phelps over his bong incident.

A Kellogg’s spokesperson said that the company will not be renewing Phelps’ endorsement deal, which expires at the end of this month.

Kellogg’s statement said, “Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg’s.”

In addition, Phelps was suspended from swimming competitively for three months by USA Swimming.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the federation said in a statement. “Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”

No more Kellogs for me! But I’ll take plenty of phelps….

# 2

guess we can call him the “fabulous baked boy” - too bad about Kelloggs though.

Unfortunately for Michael he became a national treasure , so expect more sanctions to make an exemple out of me. He gonna pay a huge price for his bad judgment but I am confident he’ll go through it.

On the other hand, that goes to show you how unfair “the business” is. Cokehaed Kate Moss made 10 times more money after being caught on tape snorting cocaine.

# 5

too bad he made just a stupid mistake.

# 6

Kate Moss never peddled “wholesome and athletic”, so get over yourself. It’s not about fairness, rather it’s about the image. Can’t have your bong and smoke it too.

Good for Kelloggs.

# 7

See this is why I hate the entertainmnet industry it eff’s up ppl’s lifes granted Micheal was no saint in his behaviour but here we have a guy who worked his ass off since he was young and one stupid mistake is making his life horrible IMO they suspended him from swimming what the hell is that gonna acomplish! all they want is to make an example of him my ass it’s bad for business i.e money, whatever that person who took that pic of him ruined so much just for an easy buck!

The message I got was that you can smoke pot and still be an American sports hero, excel at things, and even be healthy, or am I wrong here?

The hype over smoking pot is so old fashioned and still driven by old folks who cant bear the fact that it actually is medicinal and helps a lot of people cope with illnesses, and maybe even relax a little. But by all means all those execs at Kelloggs, and all the other sponsors that are going to drop him over this “DRINK UP!” That bottle of vodka in your liquor cabinet, or wine that you toast with at being the best in the business does more harm to people and KILLS when your bloated ass gets in the front seat of a car than a bit of weed at a party will. H-bomb isnt for Hydrogen, its for Hypocrites.

hahaha, good for kelloggs!

lucy and Ethel @ 02/05/2009 at 11:18 pm

This is outrageous!!!!!!!
Whoever took a picture of MIchael Phelps should be shot.
I hate narks.
This man is an amazing athlete and American Hero.
Why would you bring him down after everything he has done for this country?
No one is perfect.
Get over it. America has done plenty of things they aren’t proud of.
Kellogg’s has made a mistake.
Watch your back Michael Phelps. The world is full of backstabbers and jealous people.
SAD.

Michael Phelps is a good kid who made a mistake, and now he is going to have to accept responsibility for it. Good for him for A) admitting it and B) not whining about it.

Everybody makes mistakes, but when you’re drawing five million dollars a year to promote products that are marketed to children, you had better keep your nose clean. I for one am fed up with some American’s attitudes that sports stars can do whatever they like with impunity.

I think this whole incident is going to end up being a positive thing in his life. Phelps has spent most of the past decade looking at the lines on the bottom of a swimming pool, and that has left him very little time to experience life and to grow up. Now is his chance, and from what I’ve seen from him so far, he is going to be just fine.

nic, you need to shut up. Alcohol is more dangerous than Marijuana.

Michael Phelps didn’t do anything. He smoked some weed. Big Deal. It helps you. No wonder he’s an amazing athlete.

boycott kelloggsss!

All this for a little weed? Cmon Kellogs! I am more concerned about the CORN SYRUP and additives in your products than a little weed.

[☆I n F a m o u s☆] @ 02/05/2009 at 11:30 pm

blah. 1 more gold medal and they’ll be right back on his nuts. he can get 10 more endorsements tomorrow, if he wanted.
`
all he has to do is go on snl and make fun of himself and the uptight assholez will forgive him.

a total fan @ 02/05/2009 at 11:30 pm

He made a mistake. But i can not believe that he didn’t think people espcially children were not going to look up to him. He knew going into the sport especially the Olympics, that he might be seen as a role model. And to knowing take on that responsibility comes the knowledge that you have to be careful with what you do. How does a parent explain that to a child if he is allowed to get away with it as if he did nothing wrong? Whether we think its right or wrong is not the issue, its that fact that its illegal.

Oh well…one of many endorsements.
Michael will be just fine.

He deserves whatever happens to him now. Until marijuana is legalized, it’s forbidden to smoke it. You smoke it anyway, you pay for that. EVEN if you’re the GREAT Michael Phelps.

Next time, he’ll be more discreet…

I applaud them It’s about time someone is making an effort for kids. The mentality displayed on these blogs tells me you never bought Kellogg’s anyways. You live off your Government cheese.

There are better ways to experience life, #13.

He may be a superstar but he’s still a human being, #19.

postwatcher @ 02/05/2009 at 11:43 pm

He is 23 years old making millions. This years college graduates are going to be entering one of the worst job markets in over a decade. They will not be as lucky as Phelps. He is old enough to know better. Besides, most 23 year olds are out of college…

I am sorry, but you can go to a party and not smoke pot.

I am sick and tired of all the defeatist attitudes out there. Kids and adults should not do drugs. End of story. Marijuana could be made legal for terminal people. That is fine. However I am so tired of all you baby teens and 20-somethings who think smoking pot is okay.

Talk to me in 10-15 years when you have kids of your own.

You can have a lot of fun without drugs.

Well you can;’t blame Kellogg’s. Michael shouldn’t have been doing it. He made a choice to be see in public smoking pot. He should have done it in private to protect his image.

Michael shouldn’t have had his ass smoking pot publicly. He should have been in the privacy of his own home. The fool.

It is still illegal.

There’s no surprise that there’s alot of people that are preachy. here

cutiepie32 @ 02/05/2009 at 11:54 pm

GOOD. Im glad this douche will have some consequences for his actions.

the H-bomb @ 02/05/2009 at 11:59 pm

Actually I am 42, have two kids and I dont smoke pot, but I see this is about as hypocritical as it gets. He wasnt shooting heroin. Would it have been okay if he was getting drunk at that party? Just because alcohol is legal? I tell you this, I have had 6 friends killed by driving drunk or hit by a drunk driver. I have never had one friend, or actually know of anyone who died from smoking a bit of pot. THATS THEY HYPOCRISY! Drinking ruins more peoples lives than pot ever will. The reason its not legal is because then anyone could grow it and the government could not keep track of it to tax it. It takes a lot more work to make a gallon of whiskey. Thats all its about but by all means keep believing its about some moral issue or that its bad for you. I agree with the person that the FOOD AMERICANS FEED THEIR KIDS is far more harmful. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Michael phelps was caught a few years ago with a DUI. This year, pot smoking. Whats next? gang rape? lol
*

He should definitely be dropped by sponsors

Even though I think pot is basically harmless, it is still an illegal drug. Phelps knows this, just as he knew the trouble he’d get into if he was caught with it. By losing his contract with Kellog’s, he’s learning that there are consequences to be paid for engaging in illegal activity. Simple as that.

Pot is illegal, stop defending him.

A lot of you are saying he has to pay dearly for a small “mistake”. You think this is the first and last time he’s/will smoke weed? Clearly by how pro he was with that bong, duh no.

He deserves the punishment he’s getting.

Plus I was sick of seeing his face on that cereal box lol.

If you can win an Oscar by being a bisexual heroin junkie who kisses her brother here and there - then this shouldn’t be a problem.

For those claiming pot to be safe, think again. It contains numerous toxic chemical compounds that endanger health. It could be beneficial to some yes, but it is far from harmless. It is also widely considered to be THE gateway drug.

belle - you’re a liar.

The government has Marijuana on a level more dangerous than dangerous drugs like cocaine. They’re doing this because they can’t tax something that can be grown in your backyard.

Marijuana is a plant. You know? Cannabis

I agree with all the positive commments on here. I believe he has worked his ass off for a long time now and should take a break. stupid kellogs, i hate their cereals anyways

shut up leonardo….we are not interested in your responses.

why can’t you just comment like everyone else normally?

GIVE ME A BREAK... @ 02/06/2009 at 12:51 am

Tyler @ 02/06/2009 at 12:27 am If you can win an Oscar by being a bisexual heroin junkie who kisses her brother here and there - then this shouldn’t be a problem.
___________________________________________

LOL LOL Here we go again it always goes back to her.. This is about Phelps not anyone else.

There’s alot of hypocrisy here. If senators and presidents can smoke weed, accidentally shoot people by going duck hunting, and get caught in the bathroom having sex with other male counterparts - then he shouldn’t be punished for smoking alittle weed.

LAME. He didn’t disappoint me, he IMPRESSED me. I like that the guy can win like 10 gold medals and still take a bong rip. SO THERE.

LOL@ belle #34. “Pot is also THE gateway drug.” LOL, I didn’t know we had a DARE officer here! Keep kids off drugs! Pot will make you a crazy cokehead!

Um yeah right. Something tells me Belle has never smoked pot and therefore has NO idea what she’s talking about.

To me, Kellogg did the right thing. Every single person in this planet should be able to do whatever he/she wants. However, Phelps is a public figure. There are many kids who are looking for him. What he did eventhough he admitted that he made a mistake but it doesn’t make everything goes away easy like that. I’m for one who is very disappointed in him. My little cousins were shocked and totally disappointed as well.

i have never smoked weed in my life and im not too much of a fan of him but that’s ridiculous. let the man do what he wants to do.

well he has to face the consequences. serves him right.

NO he can’t do whatever he wants ! Smoking pot is FORBIDDEN ! I mean, just because he won 8 freaking gold medals, can he also try heroin ? Can he also drive drunk ? oops, my bad, he already did that. So now, basically, you guys are saying that he’s not a normal citizen anymore. Why the double standards ?

chachaheels @ 02/06/2009 at 7:58 am

I don’t believe marijuana is harmless, it certainly has its effects both long term and short term. But, Kellogg’s cereals are way more harmful than marijuana, and they’re way more addictive (high fructose corn syrups and sugars, genetically modified corn, msg, nutritionless grain, etc). And they market that stuff directly to kids. Talk about real drug pushing.

All Phelps has to do is keep training, keep excelling at what he does. When he succeeds even further, and Kellogg’s begs for him to help shill their nutritionless frankenfood, I hope he makes a public act of snubbing every one of their offers. He could issue a press release explaining that his healthy image shouldn’t be abused to sell truly unhealthy foods to children everywhere.

There are plenty of other big corporations out there who’d be happy to sponsor him, bong and all.

HEY Y’ALL, I BELIEVE KELLOGGS WILL BE LOSING A LOT OF FROSTED FLAKES MIDNIGHT MUCHIE GOERS. DARN, I LOVED THOSE THINGS, TOO. WELL, THEY LOST MY CONTRIBITION TO THE YUMMY EXCESS SUGARY CEREAL. OH WELL, MAYBE IT’S FOR THE BEST, I MAY HAVE ENDED UP WITH DIABETES. MAN MADE BEER, GOD MADE POT, WHO DO YOU TRUST??????????????????

P.S. KELLOGG’S SUGARY CEREAL IS WAY MORE DANGEROUS FOR OUR HEALTH THAN A PLANT. I AM SADDENED BY THIS SITUATION. MAY WE ALL LIVE IN PEACE, LOVE & HARMONY. OH WAIT, ISN’T THAT ILLEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA… TO LIVE IN PEACE, LOVE & HARMONY???????MAYBE THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WILL LEGALING TO LIVE IN PEACE, LOVE & HARMONY. I LOVE ALL THOSE WHO SMOKE & DON’T SMOKE. AND BELIEVE GOD FEELS THE SAME WAY, HE LOVES THOSE WHO SMOKE AND DON’T SMOKE. BUT I THINK HE IS SAD ABOUT ALL THE ANGELS WHO VISITED HIM A LITTLE TOO SOON DUE TO ALCOHOL RELATED SITUATIONS ( POISIONING, WRECKS, ETC.) AND ON HIS OTHER HAND , I THINK HE IS GLAD TO KNOW THAT THE MEDICINAL PLANT HE PUT ON THIS EARTH IS HELPING CANCER PATIENTS EAT A BITE, OR THE STRESSED HARD WORKER RELAX A LITTLE INSTEAD OF PUTTING DANGEROUS PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS IN THIER BODIES. MAY WE ALL COME TOGETHER AND LET IT BE. OPEN YOUR MIND AND YOUR HEART TO ALL SITUATIONS, BECAUSE EVERYTHING CHANGES NOTHING EVER STAYS THE SAME, SO SOMEDAY YOU MAY NEED THAT LITTLE BIT OF GOD’S PLANT TO HELP YOU EAT A BITE. PEACE, LOVE & HARMONY!

Oh darn! No more shortbus dude on my corn flakes!!!

BOYCOTT Kellogg at your local supermarket!!!!

smokey the bear @ 02/06/2009 at 10:45 am

Oh come on Kellogg’s! You are missing a great opportunity. The first thing a pot head grabs is the cereal when there is no pizza in the house. Just imagine. Phelps as your spokesperson and cereal just flies off the shelves. There would be a Corn flakes and Frosted flakes shortage and you could raise the prices of the cereal just like the gas companies jacked us with the gas. Missed opportunity Kellogg’s! You have underestimated the sheer number of marijuana users. What a shame.

It’s just a little weed people, RELAX!

it was bad this picture leaked, but come on! it’s not that big of a deal. it might ruin his “clean” image and parents are probably upset, but people are going way to far with this

THAT’S RIGHT!!!!!! BOYCOTT KELLOGG’S AND ANY OTHER COMPANY WHO DECIDES TO DROP THIS AMAZING MAN, WHOM HAS TO HAVE LUNGS LIKE A WHALE TO SWIM THAT FAST. MAYBE THAT WAS HIS SECRET USING THE GANJA TO STRENGTHEN HIS LUNGS. I’LL TELL YOU WHAT, I KNOW PEOPLE WHO MAKE $30,000 A YEAR AND I KNOW PEOPLE WHO MAKE $500,000 A YEAR, AND GUESS WHAT ? THEY ALL SMOKE, AND BELIEVE ME, THE ONE WHO MAKES $500,000 NEEDS IT FOR HE WORKS SO HARD AND WOULD PROBABLY DIE OF A HEART ATTACK FROM STRESS WITHOUT THE HELP OF GOD’S BEAUTIFUL GREEN PLANT.

When was doing drugs EVER a public thing, #25 and #26?

Yeah, #27.

He’s a human being and never asked to guide your kids’ futures, #43. He just likes swimming and is very famous for that but he’s no saint or sinner. He’s just a person that screwed up.

No no for drugs and sport!

DUI in 2004 remember? now pot!!!

Corn flakes are boring anyway @ 02/06/2009 at 2:42 pm

Tyler, Leonardo, whatever your name is, just because marijuana is a plant, does not mean it can’t contain toxic, naturally occurring chemicals, and it doesn’t mean it’s safe.

HEY MR. CORNFLAKES ARE BORIN’ ANYWAY, HOW ARE YOU. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT IT ONLY CONTAINS CHEMICALS IF MAN INTERFERS WITH NATURE. I WASN’T QUITE SURE IF YOU KNEW THAT. IF POT HAS CHEMICALS THAN SO DOES VERY OTHER HERB WE EAT!! I THINK THAT MIGHT BE CLEAR AS DAY. THANK YOU.

lakers fan in boston @ 02/06/2009 at 4:24 pm

i dont really care for phelps that much
but i was shocked 2 hear that his other endorsement deals were still sticking with him
i dont think what he did was that bad, but i agree that he at least needs 2 be somewhat punished
3 months aint **** btw…

retrobanana @ 02/06/2009 at 5:19 pm

im noooo saint i really am not but look if you are in the public eye if you are supposed to be up there a role model for little kids then no you shouldn’t be doing drugs in public. The issue isn’t if he should or shouldn’t have been smoking weed. What the issue is about is if he should be penalized for it. when I was kid I was obsessed with kristi yamaguchi I mean big time and if I saw pics of her smoking weed i would think that was a cool thing to do and i am sure kellogs would realize this….so that is what the issue is. kellogs feels that they cannot represent people who are going to promote “crappy stuff”.
I agree with all of you marijuana should be legalized but that has nothng to do with it. It is the message that it sends and kellogs doesnt want to be screwed in the long run. I also do not see the big deal with michael phelps in the first place. Yeah hes a great swimmer but he seems to hang around with people below him. and I am a stickler for if people screw up they get whats coming to them.

Usain Bolt is my favorite current olympian!

retrobanana @ 02/06/2009 at 5:22 pm

umm yeah marijuana is just as bad ast smoking ciggeretes why do you think you caugh up you lungs and what the hell do you think is going in your brain that makes you laugh like a moron at stupid things or what is that calming situation that you get. its all chemicals affecting your brain. i still think it should be legalized but i am just saying. it aint vitimin c.

HEY RETROBANANA, I JUST WANTED TO REPLY TO YOUR MESSAGE. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT THERE ARE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN EVERYTHING. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS IN ALL THE ANTI-DEPRESSENT DRUGS THAT MESS WITH YOUR MIND FOR THE LONG RUN- WORSE CHEMICALS THAN GOD’S CHEMICAL.THE PEOPLE I KNOW WHO SMOKE ARE BRILLANT PEOPLE, GOOD PEOPLE, THE BEST PEOPLE. THEY WILL HELP YOU IN A SECOND AND LEND A HAND, SO I GUESS THOSE MUST BE SOME NON- HARMFUL CHEMICALS…. DON’T LET THE GOVERNMENT FOOL YOU DARLIN’.

Marijuanas bad people. What if Phelps had a panic/anxiety attack and developed a disorder it would screw up his future forever. People need to think about this stuff before they use it.

montana mike @ 02/06/2009 at 6:20 pm

i hope whoever took the picture wasn’t supposed to be a friend, and i don’t think for one minute that damn tony the tiger has never had a bong hit–that’s why he likes frosted flakes so much

It is a serious offense to get your picture taken at a frat party. No other serious 100 million dollar professional gets caught like that. Ask Derek Jeter or Tom Brady. They don’t get caught smoking pot. He is getting paid 100 million a year, he needs to do that in his private time and not be irresponsible. If he wants to do that, he can go without being paid because he is being paid to be spokesman.

people are making such a big deal about this, it was just weed at a friend’s house its not like he was driving high or anything, I think the DUI he got was worse than this

Corn flakes are boring anyway @ 02/06/2009 at 8:06 pm

MESHELL-Pot contains a chemical called THC. It is natural. You are wrong about plants only containing chemicals if man fools with the. In fact, lots of bottled medications contain naturally derived chemicals, that have a desired effect. If you need me to, I can list a few. As for antidepressants, why do you think that they “mess with your mind”, are you Tom Cruise? They are helpful to many people, and are a great althernative to suicide or self-destructive behavior. They have pulled many a woman through post-partum depression. So don’t knock ‘em. I have no issue at all with people smoking pot recreationally, and knw lots of people who do. I have to say, though, the ones I know who use it daily are not brilliant, although some of them are intelligent. They tend to think of themselves and their addiction FIRST, although they can also be very kind and giving. They all have their talents, but the daily users, for the most part, like to spend an awful lot of time sitting around doing nothing, and talking about dreams but not DOING them, and they tend to be emotionally a little dead.

YES, SIR MR. CORNFLAKES. I KNOW GOD’S CHEMICAL FOR THE PLANT IS THC, I HAVE STUDIED THE PLANT FOR DECADES. MY WISDOM ON THE SUBJECT IS DASHING. I DON’T BELIVE YOU SHOULD SMOKE ALL DAY EVERYDAY, BUT WHEN YOU NEED TO MAINLY FOR MEDICINAL REASONS. NO ONE HAS EVER DIED OF A OVERDOSE OF THE PLANT, WHICH YOU ALREADY KNOW. BUT I KNOW LOTS WHO HAVE DIED FROM OVERDOSE OF ALCOHOL AND THE MEDICINES IN OUR CABINET. YOU KNOW THEY EAT THE PLANT IN OTHER COUNTRIES AND PUT IT IN STEW FOR THE FLAVOR. BOY, SOME ZOLOFF WOULD TASTE HORRIBLE IN A STEW, DON’T YOU AGREE MR. CORNFLAKES? AND THOSE WHO JUST SIT AROUND AND NOT CHASE THEIR DREAMS, I THINK THAT IS THEIR FAULT, NOT MARIJUANAS FAULT , IF THEY ARE THAT WEAK TO NOT GET UP OFF THE COUCH MAYBE THEY DO NEED SOME OF THE GOVERNMENT MEDICINE, BECAUSE SOMETHING SERIOUS MIGHT BE WRONG WITH THEM. I WILL PRAY FOR THEM.

what a douche bag.

Corn flakes are boring anyway @ 02/07/2009 at 12:14 am

Well put, MESHELL, and I have to agree about the booze. I hear all the time about the car accidents that are booze-related, liver disease, people getting into brawls and beating their kids, but how often do we hear about stoned people doing this stuff? And alcohol is legal…

HEY MR. CORNFLAKES, THANK YOU, SIR FOR APPRECIATING MY THOUGHTS, AS I WILL APPRECIATE YOURS. I BELIEVE WE ARE ALL RIGHT IN OUR SIMPLE, LITTLE WAY.I GUESS IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE SITUATION DOESN’T IT.

While I agree that smoking the bong is no big deal, I can’t understand why everyone says he’s just a kid who made a mistake. He is not a kid!! He’s an adult who is 23 years old and should have better judgement for a person in his position.
It’s not the first time “the kid” has screwed up…DUI at 19.
I’m sure if this were one of his competitors from another country few people would be so forgiving.
I hope he gets it this time.

WELL, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES. WE LIVE WE LEARN. WE CAN ONLY FIX SOMETHING THAT HAS HAPPENED FIRST. IF IT DIDN’T HAPPEN IT WOULDN’T NEED TO BE FIXED. I THINK HE HAS FIXED IT BY APOLOGIZING, AND NEXT TIME HE SMOKES, I BET HE WILL DO IT IN PRIVATE. I’D RATHER HAVE HIM SMOKE AT THE PARTY THAN DRINK ALCOHOL ANYDAY.

…I think this is a little ridiculous. 23 years old IS an adult age, yeah. But tons of people are still in university in their early 20s, and campuses everywhere are full of pot. Of all the drugs he could have done, pot is the most generic and common among people that age.

Furthermore, it’s not like he was smoking on the steps of the Smithsonian or something. He was at a friend’s party. He was doing it in a private place with people he probably trusted. This stuff about how he should have kept a low profile is crap. He was betrayed, plain and simple.

Plus, he has accepted the consequences with real poise. I think he’s been very mature about the whole thing. The whole issue is way overblown.

I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK KAYTEY. I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE BOYCOTING KELLOGG’S BUT GOIN TO SUBAWAY ALL THE WAY!!! TOO BAD MR. KELLOGG.

Who the hell is Leonardo? I’m Tyler. Stop associating me with another user.

Isnt it ironic? how michael seems like the good boy, but hes actually a bad boy. i mean that girlfriend of his? is definetly the bad boy type. and now this? he is definetly NOT a role model to anyone.

I will never buy another Kellogg’s product again.

Cannabis is not a drug, its a flower. If Kellogg’s has a problem with Mr. Phelps’ behavior, then I have no problem buying cereal products from one of their competitors.

Many intelligent hard-working people (like Mr. Phelps, winner of 8 gold medals) choose to use cannabis responsibly as a way to unwind and relax. It is physiologically safer than alcohol, and is less damaging to an athlete’s performance than alcohol; yet nobody would have cared at all if Mr. Phelps had been photographed with a beer in his hand. The fact of the matter is that most Americans are horrendously ignorant with regard to psychoactive substances.

Americans fear mind-expanding drugs. Yet paradoxically, there is a drug store on every corner — so it can’t be the drugs that people are scared of; it must be the mind-expansion!
