Angelina Jolie Visits Refugees in Thailand

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has called on the Thai government to grant Myanmar refugees in northern Thailand greater freedom of movement.

“I was saddened to meet a 21-year-old woman who was born in a refugee camp, who has never even been out of the camp and is now raising her own child in a camp,” Jolie said after her visit Wednesday to Ban Mai Nai Soi camp.”With no foreseeable chance that these refugees will soon be able to return to Burma (Myanmar), we must find some way to help them work and become self reliant. I hope we can work with the Thai authorities to speed up the government admissions process and that you will not be forced to go back to Burma if danger remains.”

Read the full report at UNHCR.org.

In movie news, Angie will be serving at the executive producer of Resilient, a film that tells the stories of strong women from different countries. Her friend, Mariane Pearl, the widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, will interview five women who have overcome tough odds to bring about change in their communities.

Kay @ 02/06/2009 at 11:01 pm

Politicians cannot get anything done. This is why the world history is very much about perspective. Every country sees things according to their own perspective. Yes, politic is very complex and never is for the benefit of no one, but always is for the benefit of someone. The refugees, according to the politicians, are no one.

Her Project in Cambodia…

Samlaut district resident, Surs Moeurn, has had a difficult and unstable life. A former monk and soldier, Moeurn, now 50 years old, lost his sight and both his hands to a landmine. His injuries make it extremely difficult for him to provide for his family. For almost 20 years, between 1984 and 2001, Moeurn lived in a plastic tent with his wife and two children in extreme conditions. With little food throughout most of the year, his children could not attend school as they needed to help him tend to the meager crops in the field.

Recently, this all changed for Surs Moeurn and his family. With assistance from MJP, who provided them with a proper house, a plot of land, a cow and other necessary equipment, Surs Moeurn can now build a better life for his family. “My dream comes true, Mrs. Angelina Jolie is like my parents”, he said. “My life is now meaningful, I have enough food, my kids can go to school, I have cow for reproduction and land for cultivation,” he added. Moeurn still worries about his children, his income is irregular due to his handicap, but he is in a much better place to be able to provide a healthy future for them.

Do you think this is the only man/person she’s helped? She is trying to give these people the tools so that they can eventually provide for themselves.

It seems crazy to some of my friends that I want to leave the warmth and safety of my home. They asked, “Why can’t you just help from here? Why do you have to see it?” I didn’t know how to answer them. And I’m not sure if I’m being crazy or stupid.

My dad attempted to cancel my trip. He called USA for UNHCR, but since I am an adult, he couldn’t stop me. I was angry with him, but I told him that I know he loves me and that as my father he was trying to protect me from harm. We embraced and smiled at one another.

My mom look as me like I was her little girl. She smiled at me through her teary eyes. She is worried. As she hugged me good-bye, she gave me a specific message from my brother, Jamie. “Tell Angie I love her, and to remember that if she is ever scared, sad, or angry - look up at the night sky, find the second star on the right, and follow it straight on till morning.” That’s from Peter Pan, one of our favorite stories.

Please come home safe, Angie!

Good night & good luck!

Kay @ 02/06/2009 at 11:01 pm My problem with all of this is that what Angelina is doing is raising awareness, but that is different from applying governmental pressure, and I think she should figure out the difference and stick to that. An actress from the US showing up and suggesting that a country do things differently means nothing. Pressure requires a lot of politicking from people (read: politicians and government bodies) who actually have a stake in the country and an impact on that country. An actress wishing things were different doesn’t do anything except raise awareness. I think if Angelina got this straight, her efforts would be more focused and more effective. Maybe she should try community organizing instead of making a grocery lists of foreign leaders she’s met for pointless reasons.

##################

Oh for heavens sake. Do you really think she just showed up in Thailand and suggested things. I am sure this is all part of a planned concerted effort to put pressure on these SE Asian governments. I have no idea who is a part of the campaign but you can guess the UN, NGOs and other human rights groups and probably the U.S. and who knows who else. Maybe even factions in Burma and Thailand.

These trips are not spur of the moment. They are planned well in advance. In fact, as someone previously reminded us Jolie mentioned the trip this past July.

Your criticisms are groundless and miss the entire point of her work for the UNHCR. She is not acting alone. She is not just reading her wish list. She is acting as a rep of the UN and in concert with politicians and most likely governments. And she has already accomplished a great deal since in direct response to her words Thailand is now backtracking as is Indonesia which now seems poised to grant refugee status to these people. Talk about Domino Theory: 2009 Version.

CLINIQUA @ 02/06/2009 at 7:46 pm
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You are so right. Did they even mention the UNHCR? You would think that they would if they didn’t because where did they get footage from?

anyway here’s something that might be of interest to some of you. I don’t usually go there but well…

It took over a year to get cooking, but now we’re finally going to see what walking spermatoza look like. Yay? The Blades of Glory duo were creating the story of a woman obsessed not with a family and that white picket fence, but with a baby sans the man. Now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Jennifer Aniston will be the wanna-be mama, and Jason Bateman will play her sperm-having friend

Seriously, Hollywood. Enough already. I feel like I’m drowning in some frothy pink hell made of Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Dancy, and lip gloss. I know I’m not alone, particularly among our Cinematical crew, nor among film chicks in general. All week, sites like Jezebel have been ranting about the New in Towns and Confessions of a Shopaholics

I can see why you think women like these movies … many of them do, and there’s nothing horribly wrong with that. Fluff is fun. I don’t hate the women who watch them, just as I don’t hate you for making them. I’d overlook He’s Just Not That Into You if you weren’t trying to bury me alive in your pink-and-purple demographic. You just aren’t stopping — and half of them seem to star Jennifer Aniston, who I might just assign all the blame to. As she laughs off that tabloid image of her as some kind of man-hungry, crazy cat lady done wrong by Brangelina, she makes dozens of films that suggest American women are all precisely that. Thanks for that, Jennifer — as I try to get the plot description and title of The Baster out of my head, could you go do some Shakespeare? Didn’t you ever want to play Lady Macbeth?

http://www.cinematical.com/

Baster is that really Aniston next movie? LMAO. I guess the studios understood something that Aniston’s fans and alot of the pity party media did not understand. Aniston has limited talent. What you saw on Friends is all she can do.(Thus all her films could have been part of a Friends episode. ) Plus Aniston was not the reason the dog movie did so well. (Thus they green lit this low budget comedy. In which Aniston won’t get paid a salary. She will have to make sure it makes a profit. Can you say another naked coverj) I also think it’s funny that the movie is about Bateman not Aniston.

Where as some actresses are trying to live up to the standards set by legends, Aniston is trying to stay even with Kate Hudson.

I can’t believe I skimmed through most of this crap. This is totally going to be one of those threads that we mock in the future for its utter stupidity. Trying to make a controversy out of a, quite frankly, incredibly generic statement she made? Nice try.

And golly, who knew JJ was so popular in Thailand?! So many bilingual citizens who happen to follow U.S. gossip blogs and can dig up the individual posts on one celebrity. Who ever would’ve thought?

Hey, AJ&haha . I’m Thai and totally not agree with you. You make me feel ashamed of being Thai because of your manner (such as you wrote in thai language so these people (who don’t understand ) have never known that you’ve bashing them in baddest words. And it’s funny that you’ve educated from US - suppose to being called scholar or well-educated and should know how to treat people nice even you’ re piss off (sorry , my english is my second language). You Know what! not all Thai (just some narrow-minded who think they are know best ) agree with your so-called point of view. Most of these country are Buddish and we are taught be generous and forgiving , why changed now? I’ m living in Chaing-mai and Payuo (north of Thailand - at Payou (Chainkum-districts) my place not even far from refugee camp (about 30-35km from here) and some of my friends are UN aid-worker , they are nice poeple who worked with no pay-check (who just belive that the better-world could be enough). And I’ ve met some refugees - they ‘re quite shy , humble , nice-manner, and despaired , they ‘re not what you’re afraid of (i’ve never heard that they ‘ve bad behavior around here) .From my childhood I’ve had a Burmese piano-teacher ,but she’ve pass away now. She’ve taught me many things epecially a kindhearted and beautiful music (she’ve spoken english very well even in burmese-english accents). And for Miss. Jolie , I’m her big fan (all my family are) she’s diffrent from the rest of hollywood self-centered (me&myself) movie stars. She has a gut and talented and kind-heart. You’re wrong that you’re attack her. She ’s doing her job (UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador).

419 Jill @ 02/06/2009 at 7:43 pm AJ @ 02/06/2009 at 9:30 am

She prefaced it by talking about this woman who never had a chance to leave the camp, implying that the admission process has taken so long, and then she proceeded to say that she wants OUR government to speed up the process. That is criticism in Thais’ opinions.
****************************************************************************
Well whose government is supposed to speed up the process, if not yours? These refugees are in your country. Some of them have spent 20 years in those camps and they have never been allowed to leave. Does the Thai government have any plan to resettle them in Thailand or in another country where they won’t be persecuted, or do they just plan on letting the refugees rot in those camps? If your government doesn’t want the refugees, then they should be proactively looking for another country who will take them. I accept that the Thais can’t do it alone. Other countries have to offer a refuge. But to say that the Thais have no responsibility in speeding up the process is ridiculous. Why can’t they integrate the refugees into Thai society — or is it that the Thais just don’t want them?
——-
I think the Rohingyas being Muslims makes them less wanted in Thailand! Since the UNHCR can’t force a country to accept refugees, I’m afraid many will be living in camps for a very long time.

Just caught up. Great thread and I have many thoughts and no solutions!!

-
Some thoughts:

-
Thailand does not support the refugees on their own, though of course, as the host nation, it does bear a greater part of the responsibilities and burdens. But some aid is made available to support refugees in the camps.

-
There is no question that the international community can do more to help the refugees by providing more money and resources. Schools should be built in these camps - and the children and teenagers educated and these schools should be built by international funds.

-
We should not expect Thailand to open its schools which it needs for its own citizens to the Burmese refugees - not when there is a shortage of Schools for Thai children themselves.

-
That’s why UNHCR needs our support and where we can do our part. We can donate to UNHCR, we can tell them we would like for some of this money to be funneled to supporting schools for refugees like the karen people. If they get an education then it’s more likely they can leave the camps and be resettled into either the local community or other communities such as Australia or the US. Educated people with skills who are hard working will always have a place to go.

-
I also agree that the world should do more to resettle refugees in other countries - those that cannot return like these Burmese refugees who are in a minority group.

-
But again, it is a question of balance. As an Australian I would say Australians have an obligation to absorb refugees. But I also think that immigrants who come to Australia should assimilate into our multicultural society. A couple of years ago I did come close to wanting to kick out that muslim mullah who talked about Aussie women as being uncovered meat (and therefore deserving of indignities!!) As Australians we can also learn to celebrate differences in our society.

-
I often think that a baby learns to walk after passing through many physical developments, and a child learns to jump and hop on one leg only after she learns to walk and run. The key thing that hampers a child’s ability to hop after she can also run, is - BALANCE. Learning to balance is the hardest thing in the world. And all human beings try to achieve harmony by trying to achieve balance among conflicting needs and rights.

-
When I read about the desparate situations facing the Rohingyas, I can’t help but think - there but for the grace of God, go I. Anyone of us, or our children or grandchildren, may become destitute or a refugee one day. Not because of anything we or they have done besides being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

-
So, ensuring good treatment of refugees is also perhaps, a way of paying it forward. One day, we or people we love, may be the ones to call in the debt.

Haha - this is from the comments section which is full of Fishyth naysayers at NY Mag, interesting tidbit:
.
Her mother is charming, but her father was an obnoxious greedy jerk. Money and Power were his thing. Very competitive, too. However, he adored his kid, that’s for sure. I had dinner with him several times in 1996 and he went on and on about how Gwyenth has the best of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Wouldn’t you be obnoxious and arrogant if your father always talked about you like that? Had dinner with Gwyneth and her dad once in Fall 1997 and she was complaining about how Brad Pitt wouldn’t give back her Pratesi towels, saying, “He didn’t even know what Pratesi was until I told him!” — after, of course, she cheated on him on a film set. Her father said that Pitt wouldn’t give her the towels because he knew that would make her mad… That was when she smoked like a chimney. Her father was best known as a TV producer, not as a director. He liked to think he was a director, but really, he paid the bills as a producer. Blythe is the best of the bunch. Jake is okay, too.

They are planned well in advance. In fact, as someone previously reminded us Jolie mentioned the trip this past July.

>>>>>>>>>>

Angelina mentioned that she would be visiting Cambodia sometime when CCOBB was being launched in Japan. The interview was done before the nominations were made.

-
One reason why Angelina has the respect of the UN workers is that she does follow through. She’s been in this camp for the 3rd time.

-
As you correctly point out, these trips, with all the attendant security concerns, are not made made spur of the moment. I mean, for heavens sakes, given Brad and Angelina’s work commitments, given that the Burmese refugees have been staying in their camps for MORE THAN 21 YEARS, it’s hardly as if theres suddenly a crisis and UNHCR thought - “Oh, let’s bring Angelina here” or Angelina just said “Oh, wait till I’m nominated for the oscars and then I’ll make the trip”

LOL

-
These Karin refugees, 110,000 of them, are largely forgotten for years - even by people like me who live in the region. Kudos to Angelina for suddenly bringing them back into the public light.

What JJ? My comments are in moderation? Goodnight. God bless the Jolie-Pitt’s.

COLIN POWELL (Former U.S. Secretary of State):
.

“She’s absolutely serious, absolutely informed. Her work with refugees is not something to decorate herself. She studies the issues.”

Powell has spoken with Jolie several times over the years, and they’ve been honored together at benefits for refugee causes. There is, he says, no sanctimony about her.

“For her, it’s not about saving the world, it’s about saving kids….She doesn’t need this. This needed her.”

.
TREVOR NEILSON (Angelina’s philanthropic adviser) :
.

“Her strategies have become extremely sophisticated, and it’s clear that she is now a serious player on international issues.”

what she talking about how Thai shoud do for Rohingya. Thailand poor enought for now. We Thais pay tax because we want the government to use it to develop our country not to go to treat these people who are not even our people. We have neither the responsibility nor obligation to treat these people who cane from nowhere on our shore.

if you want them so bad why don’t you adopt them all. just like you adopt your kids.

When the Hatian”refugees” came to your shore. Bush send back. Don’t ask us to do what your country didn’t even care to do.

PLEASE MIND YOUR OWN COUNTRY FIRST

Angie in Thailand. She is very generous.

See and download the Wallpapers of Angelina Jolie at

I just googled Angelina Jolie brad pitt Thailand and found more than 556 articles, including articles from BBC and other reputable newsjournals who have reported on the visit and her statements.

-
NO ONE CAN DENY Angelina’s power to highlight the refugee problem in a country.

-
What will that solve? WEll, that depends to some extent on each of us. Now that we do know, what can each of us do? Can we start by making a small donation to build a school in a camp through UNHCR or some other organisation? Perhaps.

-
BUT one thing is for CERTAIN:

IF YOU DON’T KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM, YOU WILL NEVER SEEK A SOLUTION.
