Kanye West: Devastated By Rihanna’s Situation

During his morning KIIS FM show, Kanye West spoke to Ryan Seacret about the altercation between Rihanna and Chris Brown. Here’s what the 31-year-old singer had to say:

“I saw them at Clive’s [the night before]. I know Rihanna a bit better because I went on tour with her and we really vibed out on a lot of creative ideas. With the touring, I gave all these reference of Graces Jones and Jean Paul-Goude. Back in the 80’s when pop stars just took it to a whole ‘nother level. I really feel that Rihannais so important to our culture and pop music. I feel like she is the most important artist in music and has the most potential. Her taste level at her age and the songs she does and her style and her performance and her voice.

“She has the potential to be the biggest artist of all time. In that sense, I feel like that’s my baby sis and I would do anything and everything not help her in any situation. I don’t want to speak too much on it but I was completely devastated by the concept of what I heard to the point that I Was completely devastated during my “American Boy” performance [with Estelle during the Grammys].

“It’s so devastating. As a person, I don’t care how famous she is or if she just worked at McDonald’s, that should never happen. It should never come to that place.”

yea i hope u get better rihanna but women think they can hit on a man and they not suspose 2 hit them back?!?!?! yea rite!!! i know chris very well and he would never put his hands on a woman so i feel rihanna needs to keep her hands 2 herself and maybe this would never have happen. KEEP UR HEAD UP CHRIS!!!!

It shows that he doesn’t have taste in music if he thinks Rihanna is or will be the biggest artist of all time, gimme a break.

On another note if Chris really did that he’s an idiot, and I have no compassion for people who do stupid things.

For the first time EVER….I agree with Kanye.

It is sad , but sorry she isn’t a important artist, she can’t sing .

Thank black culture for this one…

Number 22 I do agree with you on the point that no man should hit a woman but It does kinda matter who started it. NO woman should hit a man…I don’t care if it doesn’t hurt the man as much…It’s a double standard that should be thrown out.

Naima, that was sweet of you… and a really good way to put it. Of course it is sad what happened to rihanna and chris, but I feel my situation is worse because its death…my dad was electrocuted and suffered for 30 hours before he died. I guess I am just at the anger stage of grief…but I do thank you for your kind words

If the allegations are true that it is indeed Rihanna the victim, she should put an end to this relationship which has not been publicised to the extent of ”branding” the couple and hence no proffessional strings attached to their relationship. Unlike Posh who could be cheated on a zillionth time and she would still kiss Beckham ass to to keep her name which give her nods and contracts in the biz. Must be devastating for Riri to let go if she loved Chris to bits. Of course the music industry is going to distort the situation as much as they could to shield the cash cows (Chris Brown & Rihanna) , and we might never know the truth. It is beyond me that Cris would thow his career and earning ability away. If the two split, more drama coming our way, he said-she said and akward moments as they would need to show up at same major events. may the best man win!

Of course he had to start by giving himself props for introducing her to the works of Grace Jones and JP Goude. Then the surreal compliments (”I feel like she is the most important artist in music and has the most potential.” Seriously?)…
LOL, I love Kanye but sometimes he kills me.

I totally agree with his last statement though. I don’t care what happened, Chris shouldn’t have hit her.

thank the culture for what? technically if you want to go there then do we say all germans like to stuff people in ovens? i mean the white american culture killed millions of native americans and maimed and tortured slaves, should we see all white people are like this? look america is founded on violence - but we are not a violent people, we just have a violent history. just as i do not blame all white men for jeffrey dammer, or ted bundy or charles manson or any other serial killer - why does chris brown have anything to do with black culture? if that were the case then every white woman would be judged by paris hilton and britney spears and god knows that would not be fair. so think before you speak. prayers go to rihanna and any woman who is a victim of domestic violence - and there are a staggering number of women who are suffering from this and they come in all colors. t

that was sweet of Kanye…

Chris is quiet on this one. #30 domestic violence happens in every race. Hopefully this is the first and last time Chris did this to Rihanna. Her lips were swollen a few weeks ago, I heard it was herpes, it could have also been a fit to the mouth. Thank you Kanye for your kind words. God bless Rihanna. Hope Chis gets the help needed for his violent temper. He needs to come clean, seek help and get his life back in order. It is so sad to see such wonderful young talent on both sides have such horrific outcomes.

It’s terrible what happened to Rihanna, but there is no way that the music she has done takes anything to “a whole ‘nother level.” She is an average pop star and nothing more in terms of her music. Kanye is so given to hyperbole that it is ridiculous.

I hope she doesn’t go back to Chris Brown.

STELLA - You’re welcome honey, again I am so sorry for your loss, its perfectly natural and healthy to be angry, you have to let it out and I completely understand. Take care of yourself and try to stay postive as much as you can :)

dont care.. @ 02/10/2009 at 2:33 pm

I agree with Kanye West to the extent that I feel sorry for her.
I don’t agree with the whole, “She has the potential to be the biggest artist of all time” crap.
Because Madonna has been around for 25 years..
when Miss Rihanna reaches being in the music business for
that long, & managed to stay relevant. Will be the only time anyone can say that. Until then those titles belong to the likes of Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Al Green, Elvis Etc..
Kanye has got to be smoking something if he thinks she is the biggest star of all time.. she hasn’t even cracked into that long list.

I just remembered why I like Kanye. And justjared needs to remember:”It should have never come to this.” Wise words.
Glad you pulled that ridiculous video of Chris Douchebag rehearsing for the Grammys. I hope that soon he will be singing in a jail cell. Singing soprano.

People need to shut up until they get more details on what happened!!

ohh, so that’s why his performance sucked! i knew there was a reason, and not his fault at all! ;)

To lopz723:

You are such an ignorant fool. To even imply that only black people are involved in domestic violence shows how stupid you are!!

enoughalready @ 02/10/2009 at 2:40 pm

@22 have you seen them bites and bruises? you are going off of what a site says just like me. No one of authority came out and said so; are have they and I missed it?

Like I said; the evidence will prove it not these sites are the rest of the media that is trying to get the SCOOP.

But we are living in this time period where man get abused too and they are a shamed to announce it.

“She has the potential to be the biggest artist of all time.” He’s not saying she is, or ever will be the biggest star. He’s saying she has potential, which.. she does. Chris had no right to hit her, no matter what she did or said.

Ok enough already? Are you on drugs? What part of self defense is a woman fleeing a vehicle screaming and a man getting out, circling around the car, chasing the woman and then repeatedly pounding her in the head and face?

The only thing you got right was that the truth will come out.

enoughalready @ 02/10/2009 at 1:32 pm

It is starting to come to light that ole girl started all this and the only way he could stop it was to defend his self.

We’ll see in the coming future but I dont really believe this young man would throw his career away over her.

Evidence speaks louder than words, after they examine the car and both bodies, people will see that besides not having any talent she also dont have a leg to stand on. Stop blaming Chris cause it has always takent two to tangle and we have already been hearing that Rihanna had a bad temper.. It’s been mentioned on here before also.

Even though them two wrongs dont make it right, dont just put the blame on him…

“It is starting to come to light that ole girl started all this and the only way he could stop it was to defend his self. ”

Right. And, yet, she’s the one who had to be hospitalized, while he ran away like a scared child. If he was just defending himself, why did he leave the scene?

You want to know how a real man defends himself when his girl hits him? He walks away. He grabs her and holds her down. Maybe he pushes her off him. He does not hit her with a closed fist. This is why these black males are like this, people like you sticking up for this kind of behavior. How would you feel if this was your sister? I guess you’d think she deserved it, too.

@number 30

oh here we go, when u don’t have anything constructive or smart to say, u go straight to racial steroetypes. yes because all black ppl are the same. thanks for setting the world back another 40 yrs. geeez

#30 yep you need to get your head out of your a#s. Black culture has nothing to do with domestic violence.
