OlderHalle Berry’s Dinner Date
Halle Berry goes out on a dinner date with her boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, at Mr. Chow restaurant on Tuesday (February 10) in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The 42-year-old actress graces the cover of the March 2009 issue of Essence and opens up about the different relationships in her life. Asked about dating Gabriel, Halle said, “I tried Black men. I tried. I married two Black men. You know I tried. I don’t hold all Black males responsible because of the two bad eggs I got. I even dated Black men after my last divorce, but this is just where I found love.”
Halle also shared about her baby Nahla, 11 months, and what she has learned through being a mom. “I thought I knew love before, but I never knew anything like this,” she said. “I would take a bullet for this child and think nothing of it. That’s a different kind of love.”

Good for her for find love with Aubry and there is no need to justify Halle. They love each other end of the story. I wish she didn’t credit race though. The way she puts it is like she tried black guys and since it wasn’t working she decided to switch to white fellows. You would think this relationship is working because they are a better match or Gabriel is a nicer guy than her exes or whatever other reason but not because he is white. Very stupid thing to say but she looks stunning as always.

I hate that Essence asked her that stupid question. I mean what difference does it make? She dated the men she thought would love her the way she felt love should be and they failed. She tried again and love came her way again with Aubry and it was escalated with a deeper love with the birth of their daughter.

My brother is married to a gorgeous black woman and she reads Essence because it is the one place where they discuss such relationships with honesty.
Now the biracial thing: my brother and his wife are raising my niece as black. Why? Well, physically her skin is darker (like Obama’s) whereas I have seen biracial kids that are lighter. They just decided she is a girl of color who happens to have a white father (my brother). It is no one business to tell people of mixed race how to define themselves.
In America, one drop of black was considered black - black people did not make up that rule (which was on the legal books!) - if they did not abide by those rules, they would be arrested. There are many stories of black people losing their jobs, being jailed etc when the government foud out that they were “passing” - living a life of a white person because they did not look black. This is stuff that happened as recently as the 50’s! So how can we blame the black community for not following the orders that were forced upon them?
Now, I also notice a lot of black women are dating white men and vice versa because it is more and more an option nowadays and not sees as weird. I think it is beautiful.

I think your understanding of this issue seems limiting. It does not matter that white parents and grandparents raised Halle and Obama - that did not prevent them from being subjected to being called the “n” word or experiencing racism. I mean look what Obama had to go thru - despite a Harvard degree - to prove he was not some dangerous black man. There are people in America still today who think Obama is not fit to be President because they seem him as black. Those views are on camera all over youtube. Halle does not get roles because of what her skin color is - still today. So what does being raised by a white parent do to change their experience of being treated as black by society? If that is the theory then is Zahara Jolie-Pitt not black being she is being raised by two white parents?
And if Obama and Halle choose to say they are black as many biracial people do - then it is their business - who are you to try to define them They are grown adults.

If that’s the case, they need to claim about 90% of the blacks in this country since most have mixed ancestry. If Halle and Obama were the average person walking down the street, they would be viewed as black. They both have said that they experienced racism as black people. They have no problem with who they are, so why should anyone else? They are black…get over it!

Over 80% of African-Americans have Native American blood. Halle I believe in the article mentions how she plans to teach her daughter about her black heritage. so yes her daughter would have been a slave too…maybe in the house though. In fact, I believe Halle played a slave with a similar background in “Queen” — mother was half white and the father was a slave master.

Satin: your comment is loaded and full of comments that hint to your issues rather than any racial issue. So Obama is a “whitened” black persona and that is why he was accepted? So is going to Harvard and Princeton a white thing? Is being a Senator being a white thing? Is being articulate and inspirational a white thing? Or did you mean his demeanor or his skin color? If that is the case, why is Martin Luther King - a dark skinned man who did not mince words and spoke in a Southern accent - why is he considered such a hero to so many white people? Was he “whitened” too? If Obama had married a white woman, claim his white identity only and associated with only “white” causes - I would think he would have had an easier time so you are off so much. That he chose to present himself as black, with black children and a black wife says he has chosen the road more difficult. How many stats throughout the campaign showed people were not voting for him because he was black.
And I am curious, if your theory holds, are Obama’s daughter’s white or black? Since he is “white” in your eye - what are they? And what point would you like a black person to start or stop claiming blackness or whiteness? Do you have a generational cut off? A color cut off? You know in the South, black people had to do the “paper bag” test to get into certain clubs. If they were darker than the paper bag - they did not get in. Would you like to use a paper bag? And like someone said above, if your theory holds then there are no blacks in America because stats show something like 90% of all black people have white ancestry - the slaveowners sure had a good time with their slaves!
And to school you further, race is a myth anyway. There was a study done on a man in Tibet and he had the same DNA with a South African tribesman - they were related. In reality we cannot know who truly is one race and not another without looking at DNA and then like I said, what is the cutoff? So in fact, we have to rely on people’s decision to define themselves racially. If someone tells me they are black - why would I argue with them? Why is it my place to do that?
