Notes from a SAG actor who worked on SALT ~From Tex Allen, SAG Movie Actor. :
I’m a a SAG regional movie actor (Mid-Atlantic USA States) and participated in the recent (March 2009) on-location movie shooting of SALT (2010 Columbia) as a supporting actor. I worked on SALT for the entire work day, Thursday, March 5, 2009.

The weather problems and temporary health problems of SALT movie director, Phillip Noyce, delayed the first day of the Wash. DC on-location shoot, which was originally scheduled for March 3, 09, but moved up two days to March 5, 09. Brutally cold weather (which set a major cold temperature record for that date) took place on March 3, 09, and the scene was supposed to be in early Spring, in warm pleasant weather. It was STILL cold on March 5, but not as bad as March 3, when the shoot date arrived. Director Phillip Noyce was back in good health, and on hand to direct the shoot.

The scene being shot (which took about 6 hours to shoot) was a dramatic and colorful chase in which CIA (but born in Russia) double agent operative Angelina Jolie (whose character name is “Salt” in the movie, hence the movie title) is persued by CIA manager Liev Schreiber and his enforcement assistant, played by Wash. DC actor of fame, Kahaki Davidson (who is 6′7″ tall and famous for his height and many roles playing CIA, Secret Service and other law enforcement roles in the past decade in the Mid-Atlantic USA states area).

It was VERY energetic (and well acted) to almost a violent level….a life and death chase. It was VERY long, and went for a space of about two city blocks climaxing when the persued Angelina Jolie (who is quite an athlete) darts down into the METRO (National Archives Station) subway escalator entrance, and is quickly followed by her two CIA persuers, Schreiber and Davidson. (this was shot many times with the main actors running a very long distance NEVER losing energy, which was quite impressive….the 7th “take” was as energetic and as good as the first take).

DC based movie sets have become a very big problem in recent times.

When BODY OF LIES (2008 Warner Bros.) was shot in Wash. DC during Oct. 2007, movie director of BODY OF LIES Sir Ridley Scott actually halted the shoot of a very important, expensive, and complicated scene between stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe (a CIA operative and is dissatisfied boss in the movie, meeing at the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the “Mall” in Wash. DC) because of “Parparazzi” intrusion and disruption of the scene.

“Paparazzi” were actually chased away long distances in BODY OF LIES before shooting was re-commenced.

The movie was obviously very important as Hollywood ranks and counts movies.

First class actor talent, first class technical crew back up, very well thought out shoot locations and plans, and very interesting and creative (and chance taking) uses of famous Wash. DC public locations hard to work in and probably hard to get permission from the Wash. DC govt. to shoot it.

The March 5, 09 shoot located in the public parks across the street the the north side of the National Archives Building located in the 700 block of Pennsylvania Ave. NW and 7th St. NW was remarkable and very well done and thought out, very creative and interesting.

If the editing is done well, and a good representation of the day’s work is presented on the big screen, and later on video versions of the movie, the March 5, 09 shoot will be a major part of a very successful, memorable, and exciting movie.

As usual, it was an honor and pleasure to be part of such a noble, if gruelling, undertaking, and most actors and crew members part of the March 5, 09 SALT (2010 Columbia) shoot would agree.

It’s 2:30pm and it’s sunny, windy and 66 degrees. Sunday was almost 80 degrees. It’s beautiful and now I’m mad that I haven’t already lost this winter weight. Long jackets with my suits til I work this off.

Earlier people were complaining because they were filming on E Street NW and hadn’t anticipated needing to close off traffic lanes. Well, at the last minute they realized they did need closed off traffic lanes along the location site and sooooo during rush hour this morning the police gave them permission. The street is very busy during rush hour so closing it and right in the heart of rush hour traffic. I haven’t seen the extent of the film location but I imagine it’s a scene involving the State Department or the White House or both (E Street is near both) and she’s supposed to be suspected of wanting to get the prez.

Saw that Brad picked up Angie from the set on the second day here. I hope the kids had a chance to go out on the Potomac. It’s great boat ride for kids - and adults. The smaller boats are more fun and the ride is just the right time so they don’t get too antsy. We regularly rent them for parties. Evening into sunset on the Potomac is just lovely.

You’re right about people who see Angie in person. My colleagues who saw her on the set all remarked how simply beautiful she is. Also how small she seems. She’s not short but she is petite.

This is supposed to be the last day fiming in D.C.

I was at work today and a co-worker of mine mentioned that she had seen Changeling last night. Another co-worker replied, “Oh, yeah, I saw that. It was great!” And then all the rest of us join in to talk about what a phenomenal actress she is and how she deserved that Oscar.
