Olympic champion Michael Phelps speaks candidly to NBC’s Matt Lauer about the night he was photographed smoking pot from a bong, the impact it has had on his career, and why its important for him to return his focus back to what he loves most, his family and swimming. Here are some interview snippets:
On how he found out about the pot pic: “I forgot how it was. Somewhere in– it was through an e-mail form. And I had no idea really what to do. You know, I knew that I’d made a mistake and made a bad judgment. And– and, you know, I know that when you do make a mistake, you know, you’re responsible for all of the consequences. And I was willing to, you know, accept the fact that I did make a mistake.”
On what happened the night of the pic was taken: “I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group. Six or seven people probably total in the whole house. Like nothing major. You know, not like a giant college house party. It was nothing like that. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating.”

He comes across as a nice guy, but extremely naive and rather stupid. I’m not trying to be mean here, it’s just a fact.
This misery was created by jealous people……. they saw him smoke a bong once and quickly took snaps to defame him……. That is what America is really about : trying to reduce talented people to compensate for jealousy. To make money not by talent and achievement but by cheap tricks…………. He was stupid to trust former “friends”. He was not used to the sinister aspect of fame……..that in the same hand people give, they also try and take. When you are famous you cannot : dress casually, have facial expression, have sexual climaxes, go to the bathroom, be ill, be old, be overweight, be self expressive or engage in hedonism. Essentially you cant appear to be a human in public………..but what you really can’t have is superficial, backstabbing friends.

Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals at a single Olympics, his eight at the 2008 Beijing Games surpassing American swimmer Mark Spitz’s seven gold performance at Munich in 1972.
Overall, Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals: six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, and eight gold at Beijing in 2008. In doing so he has twice equaled the record eight medals of any type at a single Olympics achieved by Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin at the 1980 Moscow Summer Games. His five golds in individual events tied the single Games record set by Eric Heiden in the 1980 Winter Olympics and equaled by Vitaly Scherbo at the 1992 Summer Games. Phelps career Olympic medal total is second only to the 18 Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina won over three Olympics, including nine gold.

The fact that he’s calling it a “big mistake” means he’s a big loser. I liked him before the potpic, liked him MUCH better after it, don’t like him at all now that he’s kowtowing to his corporate sponsors. Plus the fact that he’s giving an interview to scumbag mayonnaise-on-white-bread-sandwich Matt Lauer just pulls him further down the drain! Face it, Phelps. He’s only sorry because he got caught…if he didn’t, do you really think he’d confess to doing it? No…he’s just afraid of losing his endoresements and money….he knew he was a role model and he chose to smoke pot anyways. His loss, I do not feel sorry for him. You made your bed now lie in it.
