Disney starlet Selena Gomez is Latina magazine’s fresh new face on their April 2009 cover. Here’s what the 16-year-old Wizards of Waverly Place actress opened up about:
On being a teen celebrity, including the perks and the pitfalls that come with it: “I always wanted this to be my life but I don’t want it to live my life for me.”
On admiring Britney Spears: “In a way, Britney can be someone to look up to. She was constantly being looked at and picked on, and it’s starting to happen to me. At the moment, I don’t have anything good they can pick on me with, but they’ll find something. Maybe I can be as strong.”
On being proud of her Latin roots: “I didn’t even realize what a big deal it was to be Latin at first. But then one day being with my dad, it hit me: it’s pretty neat to be Mexican. And there aren’t enough Latinas in Hollywood—or there are, but they don’t get the recognition. So to be able to come out here and use that, it’s really a powerful thing.”
On the so-called feud with fellow Disney star, Miley Cyrus: “I think Miley can agree with me. There are so many more things going on that are so much more important to us in our lives than wasting time on that stuff.”
Selena was spotted shopping at American Eagle Outfitters in Puerto Rico, where she’s filming the Wizards movie.

How is she proud of being Latina? Yeah, it may be in her blood but she knows nothing about her culture, nor language. I’m sure you guys are gonna bash at me but that’s fine.
The only thing latina about her is her last name, so being proud of something you made no effort in is sad. Gee.

Last names are important. they label you as coming from a certain group. It is nice to know she is proud to belong to a minority community. Because it is hard to do so when you are taught by society there is nothing to be proud of in your heritage. But if she does not know her culture, language (which I doubt) then she needs to learn to appreciate her heritage.

WTF? Being Mexican is being Latin/Latino/Latina; if we really want to get all technical about it so are South Americans (most), Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Italians, Spanish, pretty much anyone whose language derives from Latin, hence, Latino/Latina.

Wow you people are really angry over her saying she was proud of her heritage. How do you know if she know’s about her heritage or not? It’s not as if you know her. Why would you say she’s gonna be a **** it’s like you want something bad to happen. Why can’t people just let something positive be positive. ya she’s cool. but u can tell by her accent on the word “Latina” that she doesn’t speak it well and that is if she speaks spanish. I was born in the US and I speak spanish but forget some words. My mom speaks fluent english and my dad speaks spanish and he can speak english but with an accent. So I guess that’s why I have some trouble sometimes but I can speak well, I can have a conversation in spanish but I will forget somewords. So my point is, is that maybe she can speak it but has the accent too regardless I agree her race shouldn’t matter her success should. =]
