Disney starlet Selena Gomez is Latina magazine’s fresh new face on their April 2009 cover. Here’s what the 16-year-old Wizards of Waverly Place actress opened up about:
On being a teen celebrity, including the perks and the pitfalls that come with it: “I always wanted this to be my life but I don’t want it to live my life for me.”
On admiring Britney Spears: “In a way, Britney can be someone to look up to. She was constantly being looked at and picked on, and it’s starting to happen to me. At the moment, I don’t have anything good they can pick on me with, but they’ll find something. Maybe I can be as strong.”
On being proud of her Latin roots: “I didn’t even realize what a big deal it was to be Latin at first. But then one day being with my dad, it hit me: it’s pretty neat to be Mexican. And there aren’t enough Latinas in Hollywood—or there are, but they don’t get the recognition. So to be able to come out here and use that, it’s really a powerful thing.”
On the so-called feud with fellow Disney star, Miley Cyrus: “I think Miley can agree with me. There are so many more things going on that are so much more important to us in our lives than wasting time on that stuff.”
Selena was spotted shopping at American Eagle Outfitters in Puerto Rico, where she’s filming the Wizards movie.

i’m confused why do people make such a big deal about selena being hispanic shes only half hispanic and she doesnt even look hispanic. just because her last name is gomez? when there is a full hispanic person who is famous then i’ll be proud. not about someone who probably doesn’t know anything about her heritage. and just to be clear i don’t hate her but i’m not her biggest fan either.

ya she’s cool. but u can tell by her accent on the word “Latina” that she doesn’t speak it well and that is if she speaks spanish. I was born in the US and I speak spanish but forget some words. My mom speaks fluent english and my dad speaks spanish and he can speak english but with an accent. So I guess that’s why I have some trouble sometimes but I can speak well, I can have a conversation in spanish but I will forget somewords. So my point is, is that maybe she can speak it but has the accent too regardless I agree her race shouldn’t matter her success should. =]
it doesn’t mind if she’s white or not, i’m hispanic and i don’t fit in the hispanic stereotype but it doen’s mean that’s not my heritage because my whole family is from spain and we’re very proud of our roots like selena is of hers

1st. she is mexican and so how do u know about her knowledge of her culture…i think its good that she is taking notice that she will stand for the latin race since she is popular and how are you to say she has not put any effort or not proud of it….u dont know her and lantios are usaully veryyy proud of it trust me…she may not look latino but in her blood she is and im sure her parents have teach her about her culture…sooner rather than later she will realize and will carefully seek her actions when being interviewd or anything than when people notice more latinos in hollywood i will look back at your rude and no ignorance comment as if you know every little thing about your cultures….U should really pay attention to when something stupid is coming out of your mouth …..”GEE” miss thing

Alexandra, what part dont you get, that she does NOT look Latina, nor does she speak it? I’m Mexican, and I find it VERY disgraceful. Not only that, I talked with other latinos, and they say she is a HUGE joke. She is only proud cause the media made it a big thing. She is full of bologne.
