OlderZac Efron: Free From ‘Footloose’
Zac Efron works out a simple tee and jeans at a photocall for 17 Again on Tuesday (March 24) at Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris, France. The film opens everywhere on April 17.
The 21-year-old actor recently dropped out of Footloose, the upcoming remake of the 1984 musical. “Footloose is a project we’ve longed to see re-booted for a new generation. While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of [director] Kenny Ortega, [producers] Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise,” a Paramount Pictures rep told Us Weekly Monday. “Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we’ve come to expect from them.”

I think this is the best decision he’s made. Footloose was just a bad idea. Now he can focus on other stuff and get some true credibility.

i’m happy he don’t do this eventually but he should resist just in the begining because now it does’nt make him the best name … and poor people who work on it since july but i totally understand why he refused it heard a little bit foolish and pathetic and right now the last thing he should do is another musical he allready have this hairspray and 3 musical movie in just a year or two is too much for the serious actor he is building for, i like he did “17 again” and “me and orson welles” don’t you think? (from the bigesst fan of zac in israel!)
this kind of thing happens all the time. we just don’t hear about it as much as we hear about things with zac.
I think if zac wants more majure roles this was the best thing for him and i wish him the best for his career and he has a great one ahead of him
they should just leave footloose alone. they’re trying to ruin all the classics and they never turn up memorable anyway. good for zac

I Think Zac did the right thing. not wanted to do Footlose I believe right know Zac needs to stay away from Musicals. And people need to support him.

Thank goodness, this was a smart move on his part. It’s just a bad idea ll around to remake Footloose and no matter who is in it the movie will tank, it’s just one of those things. I think it really would have hurt his career. He needs to make an action or drama movie and get out of the teeny bopper phase as quickly as possible before he gets stereo-typed.
I think there is probably more to it than meets the eye. If this has been in development since late 2007 that is a long time and if something concrete was going to happen then it would have by now. Maybe he had to let go of this to be able to do something else that was being offered to him that was even better. And maybe there were things that Zac was beginning to see that just wasn’t ever going to be worked out. And if worthwhile work was being offered to him and this was kind of standing in his way he had no other choice. I think he really wanted to do it but he has been waiting a long time for it. Maybe he started seeing it was better for him at this time to move on with something else before doing another musical. Maybe it will turn up later, who knows?
Pierce Brosnan was offered James Bond and really wanted to do it just as many fans wanted him to do it but he was tied up with Remington Steele which he could not get out of. Another 007 movie was made with Timothy Dalton and it looked like Pierce missed out on a big deal. BUT lo and behold Pierce got another chance and the rest is history as they say. But maybe what is down the road for Zac is better than Footloose could ever be too, we don’t know that at this time.
I don’t think Zac had “signed on the dotted line” yet. These comments are from an interview he did in Australia when they were promoting HSM3:
Efron’s next project is almost certain to be a remake of the 1984 film Footloose, to be directed by Ortega. But he’s not signing on the dotted line just yet.
According to Variety, the young actor is holding out for a mid-seven-figure salary and script approval.
“There’s a lot of wrong ways to do this movie,” says Efron. “It’s a matter of finding the right balance. Until we find it, I can’t fully …” He pauses. Stuck for words. “… I can’t finish that sentence,” he says abruptly.
The conversation has already moved on to the next topic when he backtracks. “Commit. Until I fully commit.”
So, I wasn’t surprised that he pulled out. I don’t think the decision was made overnight, either.

What a jerk! He should be glad for all of the offers he gets and not turn them down. Does he really think the world is waiting for him? He’s a mediocre actor at best and it looks like his teeny-bopper fame is finally effecting his big head.

I agree with the people who think this movie should not be remade. They are remaking too many good movies these days and ruining them. Come up with some new ideas Hollywood!
i’m slightly disappointed by this but i know zac made the right choice for him. however, i’m bias because i’m secretly hoping he turned down footloose in order to work on hairspray 2 ;)

seems his distancing himself from the song and dance repertoires - - esp if he wishes to emulate Leo DiCaprio’s career
wise moves but will miss seeing him remake that fab movie!
