Zac Efron: Free From ‘Footloose’
Zac Efron works out a simple tee and jeans at a photocall for 17 Again on Tuesday (March 24) at Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris, France. The film opens everywhere on April 17.
The 21-year-old actor recently dropped out of Footloose, the upcoming remake of the 1984 musical. “Footloose is a project we’ve longed to see re-booted for a new generation. While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of [director] Kenny Ortega, [producers] Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise,” a Paramount Pictures rep told Us Weekly Monday. “Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we’ve come to expect from them.”

I’m glad Zac has put musicals behind him. I doubt HS2 will happen with Zac in it, but we shall see.
He needs to prove his acting chops with more solid roles and not necessarily always in the lead.
He;s young and seems to have a great team behind him and a strong sense of the business.
I support Zac I think it is good idea that Zac wants to move away for musical.
Zac needs to move on and do other movies besides Musicals
I can’t wait to see 17 Again and Me And Orson Welles.
yeah!!!!!!!!! if he not doing footloose, then he sure won’t do the cheezzeee hs2. yeah!!!!!!
why did he drop out?! :[
Loser.
Wow!!! Zac is one smart dude.
“I think the hardest thing about being young and in the business is that a lot of opportunities present themselves and there’s no road map,” Efron told EW in an interview last fall. “A lot of people want to give you their opinion, which can be based on their own personal gain. I’ve made it my priority to follow my gut feeling. You know when something’s cheesy and you know when something’s a sell out movie and you know when a project feels right.”

I LOOOOOOVE ZACCC<3<33
Why does this guy always insist on wearing such tight, skinny pants that don’t fit him? Seriously, they look like women’s pants. He is a great looking guy & I would love to see him in some men’s clothing for once.
So glad Zac chose not to do this movie. Wise decision on his part. I always felt the only reason he ever agreed to do it was to please Kenny Ortega.
I applaud him for taking what must have been a difficult decision. Everybody and their grandmother knew that another remake of a musical was the wrong move for him at this point in his career. TIME magazine stated publicly that if he wanted to be taken seriously, Footloose was a bad idea. I completely agree with them.
I’ve always wanted him to pull out of it and I’m happy he did. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him and I appreciate his dilemma.
Footloose is being produced by Hairspray producers and directed by HSM director. He was trapped between the devil and the deep blue sea. Upset these people or derail his career. he made the right decision and took back control of his career.
Borrowing from Malia’s quote (Thanks Malia):
“A lot of people want to give you their opinion, which can be based on their own personal gain. I’ve made it my priority to follow my gut feeling.”
Obviously these men though close to Zac, stood to gain from his going on with Footloose even though it was bad for his career.
Having stood his ground now against the people that helped launch him but want to exploit him, he can stand up against any other producer. I don’t think he’ll be touching any musicals again for a long while.
I’m happy he’s learnt the important lesson in Hollywood that you’ve got to look out for yourself and your career. No one else would do that, no matter how much they profess to like you and see you succeed.
He’s now back in the game. Let’s hope we have news of a meaty role soon.
WHAT? WHY?
I’m glad he did this. He needs to stay away from musicals ( the shitfest that will be HS2 especially) and something like footloose which would rely solely on him , with an original that was so loved, was just completely risky. Plus, honestly at least where Kenny Ortega is concerned they seem to have a good relationship, so I’d think he would understand, therefore not much to upset there.
I really think Kenny Ortega probably wants what is best for Zac. Zac and Kenny have put a lot into this and I’m sure that Kenny may be disappointed but on the other hand, after working with Zac so closely for so long—and he can’t help but know him well—I believe Kenny would tell Zac that he has to do what he feels is the right thing for him and will understand his decision.
The others may be a little more disappointed but then again, those men have been around the business a long time and know how things work and I’m sure they have seen this happen many times. Considering Zac has always been smart enough to maintain a certain say in things like scripts, etc, it should show these type people that he will not quickly jump into anything without giving it much thought—which should show he just might make these kinds of decisions if he doesn’t feel 100% sure of a project.
I agree, Naomi. I was hoping he wouldn’t like the script, or find another reason for not doing this. As much as I think Zac would have been the PERFECT lead for this movie, it’s another fluff movie, like HSM, HS, and 17 Again. If he’s trying to prove he’s “grown up” , then this movie would not have been right for the direction he’s so desperately trying to go. I’m sure it was a very tough decision, because of his respect for Ortega, but I agree with Karen that he will understand.
Karen and Go sox,
……………………………………….
I actually agree that Kenny would understand.
I guess I got ticked off when one of the reports said the producers were shocked. I felt like saying to them after I found that they were HS producers,’what are you shocked about?!! Shouldn’t you have been advising him not to do it as it wouldn’t help his career?’
I had just been frustrated for a while with it and kept wondering what sort of advice he’s receiving from those around him.
I’m just happy he finally made it. I too hope this will set the tone for the future projects.
Whatever future plans Zac for his career, will wait & see… he has his own Manager to take care of it. What is important he has projects that he able to portray according to his choice.
He has 2 movies in a row for this year… What else you could ask guys… Get worried if he has no movies at all…Let him rest otherwise he will be too overexpos….
I hope Zac does this:

I totally support Zac with this decision. Zac already has two iconic
characters on film as Troy Bolton and Linc Larkin. His portrayal of
these two characters will go down in musical film history. I might
add that I think those two characters should remain as history ,they
were perfect. As a fan I support him in anything he chooses to do.
For those of you who say Zac doesn’t have the talent… ZAC EFRON HAS THE TALENT!!! But at the same time i’m happy that he pulled out because he is being typecasted into one genre and he needs to have one groundbreaking performance that will define him, unlike his girlfriend’s drowning music career…
Now I’m sure all the Zac haters will start to think that he thinks he’s too good for muscials or Kenny…
Thanks for that, Malia. I would love that for Zac. It sounds like it would be a serious and moving drama, just the thing to showcase his talent and set him up for other serious roles. He waited till he had another offer before exiting Footloose.
I’m really proud of him for taking this step. Now he and Van are in talks for serious mainstream roles, a romantic drama for him and action/fantasy for her. Hopefully, both will be released next year.
I love the way, they’re quietly, yet decisively going about building their careers, one good role after another. They have a good head on their shoulders and will be in for the long haul.
Cheers for that, Naomi. It makes me wonder if the “powers that be” tried to quickly push Zac into Footloose and HS 2, while they could. I’m so happy he stopped to consider that 2 more music-based movies would not be such a good move if he wants to get into serious roles.
zac look sad…i think he’s missing vanessa…
