Russell Crowe as Robin Hood — FIRST LOOK

Here is the very first picture of Russell Crowe in Robin Hood, the upcoming flick which reunites the 45-year-old Gladiator star with director Ridley Scott.

“He doesn’t have the old Robin Hood tights,” producer Brian Grazer tells USA Today of the bandit’s updated wardrobe. “He’s got armor. He’s very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we’re used to seeing with Robin Hood.”

“Oddly, it’s a metaphor for today,” Grazer adds. “He’s trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He’s a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That’s a universal theme.”

Robin Hood is set for a 2010 release and also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian.

Badass

He looks exactly the same as when he was playing Maximus in Gladiator…that role was so iconic its going to be weird seeing him in that role. Same Hair style, dyed brown/black and same goatee/scruff. They should’ve done something to make him look different. http://www.geocities.com/o2thx/gladiator/storyline/gladiator119a.jpg

# 5

I think they just tried to make him look different than Kevin Costner.

# 6

He looks too old to play Robin hood. This got to be a new story with an old Robin hood and Marian (Blanchett).

# 7

He looks fantastic, definitley as good as in Gladiator.

Aaah, I love his Maximus look. We haven’t seen him since than like this. And he looks the same. Hot.

love himm!

i’ll see for sure this new version of Robin hood!

I am REALLY, REEEALLY NOT HAPPY THEY CHOSE RUSSEL CROWE FOR ROBIN HOOD! I’m upset. Little saddened by it, actually. I mean, ROBIN HOOD was always considered different in persona. WHY DID U PICK RUSSELL CROWE???!!!!!!!! I’m really disappointed. These FILM MAKERS totally screwed this up!!! I don’t give a damn how much of a “great” actor he is and i have absolutely nothing against the guy. I just think they picked the WRONG actor for this! My angst has absolutely nothing to do with his “superb” acting ability. I know he’s good at acting, darn it. My point is they should have picked SOMEONE ELSE! I am SO disappointed. They totally F***ED up the REMAKE! Not angry at Crowe though.

In fact, what would have been a really excellent idea, was to put a black man in that role. THAT would be really cool! No, i’m not black or anything like that, so fug that race card shite. ARE YOU CASTING AGENTS DRUNK!!! So mad….

:-(

WHY DID THEY PICK RUSSELL CROWE!!!!
Why God why……… WHYYYYY!!!!
(little dramatic, i know, but reeeeally disappointed)

Popcorn, anyone? @ 04/20/2009 at 1:16 am

@Geena: Thank GAWD they didn’t make him look like Errol Flynn’s RH

I really like it. Very rugged look. I can’t wait to see the rest of the cast!

so. is this the one he had to gain all that weight for…i just have to say that when i saw the pics i was like ROBIN HOOD…uh not. not even did they TRY to make him look like any version of a robin hood that we’ve all seen before, this is the antithesis of the character. what are they going with, young or old robin hood…which part of the lore are they coming from with this movie. i saw him and i was like hey that’s russell crowe. i’ve seen him look like russell crowe ALL THE TIME, so for this role maybe they could have tried to do something different. the costumes weak too.

i’m not seeing this movie…and i think cate blanchett will probably save this movie because she’s fantastic, but come on. russell crowe? gah.

i’m not saying he doesn’t look hot or like a better version of how he’s looked for the past two years. i’m just saying he’s no robin hood.

i hope this isn’t a disney movie…because as much as i may dislike disney, they know what’s up. oh it’s from universal…goodluck to them when this movie tanks.

Was Zac Efron busy?

hey jared, since you’re posting stuff, can you write about the new tin tin movie or the new harry potter trailer?

lol. please don’t insult us by referencing Z-Hud in this very serious thread. robin hood is a serious issue, same with hercules, colverine, star wars, the three stooges, mash (the tv show), things that just should not be messed with.

Thank goodness Russell Crowe is playing Robin Hood and not some pretty boy star who can’t act but instead one of the best actors in the world…….Doesn’t get much better than Crowe and Cate Blanchette on screen together!!!

Isn’t this something like the 4th or 5th “reunion ” with Ridley Scott?

Both of these boys have seen better days. I’m not just talking about looks either. Neither Ridley nor Russell has been “great” in a long time. The original concept for this movie seemed more interesting to me: that Robin was really the Sheriff of Nottingham in disguise. I liked that different twist because really this story has been done to death.

The dawn coming through the trees looks breathtaking.

@ Oh I thought that sounded more like a comedy.

@23

Yeah the original script was definitely more of a romcom.

Keep up with some previous interviews abut this movie - it’s not the same ol’ Robin Hood and actually turns the tale on it’s side. So if you’re thinking OH MY GOD WHY DID THEY PICK RUSSELL CROWE, relax - it’s going to be an intelligent person’s ‘retelling’ of RH but different.

He looks great, he got back in shape.

His Maximus days are looooooooong behind him…I’m getting a Anthony Hopkins vibe from him now. Great actor, but his looks are shot to hell!

Thank goodness he lost all that weight. He looks so much better when his hair is cut short like this. I’m not excited about another Robin Hook. Kevin Costner ruined it for me years ago. I will see it on DVD. But Russell does look good in that pic.

I just hope this will be the LAST LOOK of him too, folks!!

OMG,he looks sooooooo HOT! He looks good again when he lost weight and cut his hair. I’m so happy he is playing Robin Hood. Go Russell!!!

he lost a lot of weight thank goodness, he was once hot then he turned into a fata$$

Nobody is waiting for another boring Robin Hood movie, sorry.

You sir are no robin hood.

@billy: Speak for yourself because I for one am looking forward to this movie after seeing this picture. Russell Crowe is a credible and Oscar winning actor just like Cate Blanchett. This movie will be great!

I think Russell Crowe is a fantastic pick for this role…as the interviews have stated, this film will take the Robin Hood character in a whole new direction…until we see the finished product, it’s difficult to make a judgment call…this could be brilliant (or it could be terrible)…

But I have to comment on how Russell looks- he looks fabulous! Lost the weight and cut the hair…maybe he’ll never look like he did in Gladiator, but this pic shows much improvement from how he looked in Body of Lies…

Looking forward to this film actually…

He is the perfect example of how his off camera antics & “I’m a serious actor” bit deflects from his talent. I’ll wait for the DVD.

i love russel crowe and i like ridley scott, but i’m not convinced about this movie. crowe doesn’t really strike me as robin hood. then again, you can’t judge a movie based on a single pic.

He always makes little boy characters more manly

He looks SO much better than he’s looked in a very long time. I just saw State of Play and he looked just horrible. All concerned made a mistake by having him look so awful as it was distracting….instead of thinking about the plot I kept thinking ‘how could RC let himself go like that’ or ‘how could I have ever thought this man was handsome’, etc. In the Robin Hood picture he looks slimed down and I like the haircut. I hope he eventually does something about those raised moles all over his face. Ewan McGregor got his taken off as have a few other movie stars. It’s time for RC to get rid of his. Again, stuff like that is too distracting.

I’d rather turn on the DVD and watch Robin Hood: Men in Tights again.

Michaelangelo @ 04/20/2009 at 12:31 pm

That concept was convoluted and idiotic, #22.

Crowe’s aging terribly. You can’t indulge the way he has and not have it punish your body. Then again it could just be bad genes. But he’s only 45? C’mon. That’s not a good 45.
-
Let’s see which actor shows up for this one: the good Crowe or the overrated mediocre Crowe with a dozen acting tricks up his sleeve.
-
This was never supposed to be a romcom.

TheblondeKB @ 04/20/2009 at 12:59 pm

I can’t wait to see Russell on screen with MARK STRONG again. (Body of Lies)
Hint Hint Jared! Pics of Mark on the set would be NICE treats too.

Oh yeah!! I agree with #46!! Please Jared??

Eeew… I like Russel Crowe and Cate Blanchett but seriously??!! Marian and Robin???!! Producers must be out of their mind. Jonas Armstrong and Kevin Cosner are the only two actors good for the job!

now that's funny @ 04/20/2009 at 3:14 pm

@KAy:
I can only image you’ve never run across Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, let alone Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHaviland. I know there are more. Most of them British. Probably black and white. *ewwww* LOL

IRISHGIRL68 @ 04/20/2009 at 5:18 pm

Ohhh… hot, yummy Russell is back. Hoorah.

he could look cooler but i guess that kinda looks like robin hood
he just needs his little hat

HOT HOT HOT HOT RUSSELL!!!!!!! @ 04/20/2009 at 6:27 pm

HE IS SO FREAKING SEXY LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!! CROWE IS INCREDIBLE AND I AM GLAD HE’S NOT FAT NO MORE!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m glad, Russell is in shape again and I hope he’ll never put on weight for a role. Not healthy, Russell!

I’m really looking forward to this film and I’m sure, Sir Ridley, Russell and Cate Blanchet - and of course the whole cast and crew - will do a fine job!

Can’t wait!

oh man…why does anyone need another robin hood movie?! i thought that topic had been covered more then excessivley over the years. isn’t there really no other damn hero available?!
and btw that looks like maximus picked up kevin costner’s robin hood wardrobe by accident and tries to sneak away unnoticed.

i love russell crowe, but really don’t think anyone needs a “gladiator goes robin hood” movie.

Isn’t Robin Hood supposed to be the bad guy in this version?

@54/55

With Scott behind it, I can imagine the film will be the best Robin Hood ever made.

@Anita:
I just cant get into films where the actors look totally bland and airbrushed , they are boring.

@mertz:

Its the most realistic and beleivable Hood has ever looked, the other versions were like disney characters. LOL

This cast is impeccable! I can’t wait for this film and to finally see Cate (I think she’s easily her generation’s best actress) and Russell (a fine actor who has the potential to be a great Robin Hood) on the big screen together. Wow!

He is so SEXY!!! Can’t wait for the new movie :)

I don’t think you have to worry about Ridley Scott going pg-13 for Robin Hood. Russell Crowe has that old movie star charisma in the vein of Robert Mitchum, that intensity with subtlety that few actors have these days. He’s always a favorite to watch. Cate Blanchett is a much better contender for Crowe and Sienna Miller was. Crowe likes to chew up scenery and Cate Blanchett can keep up with him. As for Costner’s Robin Hood, I thoroughly enjoyed it when it came out, especially Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman. Crowe is made for period movies.

russel is the hotest Robin hood ever.
