Film boomlet hits New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — For years, New Orleans has been a mixed bag for Hollywood producers: Some have shot their movies in the city, taking advantage of state tax credits and the city’s exotic charms, while others have bypassed the Big Easy because of a shortage of soundstages.

Now a pair of studio projects emerging in and near New Orleans have raised the hope that more movie and television projects are coming — and along with them, extra revenue that can help the ongoing recovery effort from the 2005 hurricanes.

The number of major television and movie projects shot in New Orleans jumped from nine in 2005 to 21 last year — a record for the city, says Jennifer Day, head of the city’s film and video office. Last year’s projects generated $230 million in direct economic impact for the city, she says.

Part of the appeal are tax credits. But a big part is also the city’s unique architecture and diverse landscape, says Joshua Throne, unit production manager for The Expendables, a movie starring and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Even after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans’ charms are unlike other cities in the U.S., Throne says. “You combine the unique architecture and aesthetics with generous state tax credits … and it makes for a good place to film a movie,” he says.

New Orleans has been host to movies such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, and the upcoming HBO series Treme, by writer-producer David Simon, creator of The Wire.

As the economy soured, city officials braced for a downturn this year in movie and TV productions, Day says — but New Orleans has six major projects in production, she says.

Ten miles west of Second Line Stages, Wayne Read and Dan Forman are retrofitting a former Winn-Dixie distribution center to complete what will be the area’s largest movie studio: 525,000 square feet, including five soundstages spread over 25 acres. The Louisiana Film Studios, a $30 million project, will be the largest studio east of Albuquerque.

“We have productions that we have lost to other markets because of lack of infrastructure,” Read says. “Our goal is to capture that.”

Read says he got the idea for the studio after working as a film consultant on Benjamin Button and realizing there was a need for soundstages and offices. He and Forman, the studio’s president, had planned to open later this year, but Hollywood came knocking: Two movie productions —The Expendables, starring Stallone and Mickey Rourke, and independent production Dead of Night— needed space right away. They opened the studios in February.

Pittaro on deck for stardom

Several years ago, when the great George King was the Major League Baseball correspondent for The Times, he wrote a feature on Pittaro, the former major-league infielder who was just beginning his second career as a scout in the Oakland Athletics’ organization, and noted Pittaro’s “Hollywood good looks.” Finally, all these years later, Tinseltown has come calling.

Spoke with former Thunder pitching coach Rick Peterson the other day, and he said that Michael Lewis’ best-selling book “Moneyball,” on how the small-market A’s were able to compete against the big-money organizations by using statistical analysis as well as scouting to evaluate players, was being made into a movie. Peterson, who was Oakland’s pitching coach during the 2002 season which Lewis spent with the team, is going to play himself. So, too, is manager Art Howe as well as former players David Justice and Scott Hatteberg. Pitt, the Hollywood icon, has signed up to play general manager Billy Beane.

“As if Billy’s ego needs any boosting,” said Peterson, laughing.

Who, I wondered, was going to play Pittaro, who is featured prominently in the book? So I called Chris, and he said, “Someone you know very well. Me.”

Chris has met with the director, Steven Soderbergh, who directed films such as “Erin Brockovich,” “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” and “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.” Chris has also spoken with the casting director, who told him he’d be “needed for 12 days of shooting this summer, but I don’t know if it will be in Hollywood or Oakland or wherever. I really don’t know how they’re going to work it or if I’ll even have any scenes with Brad Pitt. I guess I’ll have my people call his people and find out.”

Pittaro, the director of professional scouting for the A’s, says this all started to come about last fall when rumors that “Moneyball” was going to be made into a movie began to circulate. Little by little, he’d hear about Soderbergh coming aboard to direct, then in February the news that Pitt was going to be involved came forth and that comedian Demetri Martin was going to portray Paul DePodesta, who was Beane’s right-hand man during the 2002 season.

“Paul’s a little ticked that a Yale man is going to play him,” Pittaro said of DePodesta, a Harvard graduate.

“About a month ago, Eric Kubota (Oakland’s scouting director) called and asked me if I was sitting down,” said Pittaro. “Then he told me I was going to play myself. I’m looking forward to it. It should be a lot of fun. I really need to re-read the book, though. But how hard can it be to play yourself?”

NEW ORLEANS — Actor Brad Pitt’s dream of seeing the Hurricane Katrina-wrecked Lower 9th Ward neighborhood thriving with more than 100 families by year’s end is slowly becoming a reality.

More than a dozen homes are either complete or under construction under the Pitt-backed Make It Right foundation, and construction is set to begin on 17 more next month. Plans are also under way to diversify the neighborhood from single-family homes to duplexes.

“Duplexes are an important part of the New Orleans topology,” said Tom Darden, executive director of Make It Right. “Families in New Orleans like to live close to their relatives, and you see examples of that all over the city.”

Darden said duplexes are more cost-effective and have less impact on the environment because two families are living under one roof. Families will also have the option to rent half the duplex, Darden said.

On Wednesday, Make It Right got a boost from New Orleans activists and civic leaders who donated $150,000 _ the average cost to build one home. Though Pitt wasn’t on hand, he was honored by the crowd of about 100 nonetheless.

The group unveiled two signature art pieces made especially for Pitt by New Orleans artist Luis Colmenares. The artist said he collected debris from the Lower 9th Ward, including ironwork from downed fences and parts from a flooded-out car, to create a roughly 2-feet tall “New Orleans Recovery Oscar” statue and a special chair that depicts in bright colors and symbols such as musical notes the city’s recovery.

“I make things from the heart,” Colmenares said. “I tried to think of what Brad would like. That’s why I used recycled materials, and that’s why I gathered my materials right here in the Lower 9th Ward.”

The donors, who each gave a minimum of $1,000, were also treated to a tour of the neighborhood by architects.

“This is incredible,” Juan Jorge Gershanik said while walking one of the neighborhood’s streets.

“I love New Orleans,” said Gershanik, who is originally from Argentina but has called New Orleans home for the past 30 years. “I love the architecture, the people, the food. Anything I can do to help bring the city back fills my heart with joy.”

Gershanik, who lives in a section of the city that did not flood, said it was especially important to help residents of the Lower 9th Ward, a predominantly black, working-class neighborhood.

“Everybody counts,” Gershanik said. “Everyone in this city, every neighborhood, was responsible for making this city the success that it was. Everybody deserves a chance to come back.”

Pitt stopped by the Lower 9th Ward earlier this month to meet with architects who will create new house and duplex designs, which are slated to be unveiled this summer.

In the meantime, construction will continue on single-family homes. So far, eight families have moved in, six homes are under construction and groundbreaking is set for 17 more in May.

The homes are for property owners who can pay insurance and taxes, and monthly payments are based on applicants’ income and subsidized by Pitt’s foundation.

So far Make It Right has received more than 200 applications from families, and currently 85 are “in the pipeline,” Darden said. That means they are on the tail end of the application process, which includes undergoing counseling how to maintain the homes.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure these families are here for many year to come,” Darden said.

The homes are more contemporary in style than the shotgun homes and Creole cottages New Orleans is known for. But they are built high off the ground and with energy-efficient features such as solar panels, which will cut energy bills by at least 75 percent.

Darden said monthly bills have been ranging from $20-$30 a month.

“And because the power company buys back energy, some bills are lower than that,” he said.

The homes do incorporate some elements used in the New Orleans area for generations, such as high ceilings and shaded porches. They also have architectural elements to address challenges of the area, such as ventilation and mold- and termite-resistant materials.

Picking up little work himself as he stays in New York City while partner Angelina Jolie works on her new film “Salt,” Brad Pitt was spotted out filming in Manhattan on Tuesday night (April 28).

Making plenty of sad faces for the cameras, the “Fight Club” stud was hard at work on a Japanese television commercial for Softbank alongside a sumo wrestler.

Aside from working on the commercial, Brad has reportedly been doting on his lady while she spends long days on-set.

“Brad has been coming to the set a lot and spending time with Angelina when she is not shooting,” an insider tells. “He has been making a real effort to see her and in her down time he’s been running round getting her drinks and snacks.”

NEW ORLEANS — Actor Brad Pitt’s dream of seeing the Hurricane Katrina-wrecked Lower 9th Ward neighborhood thriving with more than 100 families by year’s end is slowly becoming a reality.

More than a dozen homes are either complete or under construction under the Pitt-backed Make It Right foundation, and construction is set to begin on 17 more next month. Plans are also under way to diversify the neighborhood from single-family homes to duplexes.

“Duplexes are an important part of the New Orleans topology,” said Tom Darden, executive director of Make It Right. “Families in New Orleans like to live close to their relatives, and you see examples of that all over the city.”

Darden said duplexes are more cost-effective and have less impact on the environment because two families are living under one roof. Families will also have the option to rent half the duplex, Darden said.

On Wednesday, Make It Right got a boost from New Orleans activists and civic leaders who donated $150,000 _ the average cost to build one home. Though Pitt wasn’t on hand, he was honored by the crowd of about 100 nonetheless.

The group unveiled two signature art pieces made especially for Pitt by New Orleans artist Luis Colmenares. The artist said he collected debris from the Lower 9th Ward, including ironwork from downed fences and parts from a flooded-out car, to create a roughly 2-feet tall “New Orleans Recovery Oscar” statue and a special chair that depicts in bright colors and symbols such as musical notes the city’s recovery.

“I make things from the heart,” Colmenares said. “I tried to think of what Brad would like. That’s why I used recycled materials, and that’s why I gathered my materials right here in the Lower 9th Ward.”

The donors, who each gave a minimum of $1,000, were also treated to a tour of the neighborhood by architects.

“This is incredible,” Juan Jorge Gershanik said while walking one of the neighborhood’s streets.

“I love New Orleans,” said Gershanik, who is originally from Argentina but has called New Orleans home for the past 30 years. “I love the architecture, the people, the food. Anything I can do to help bring the city back fills my heart with joy.”

Gershanik, who lives in a section of the city that did not flood, said it was especially important to help residents of the Lower 9th Ward, a predominantly black, working-class neighborhood.

“Everybody counts,” Gershanik said. “Everyone in this city, every neighborhood, was responsible for making this city the success that it was. Everybody deserves a chance to come back.”

Pitt stopped by the Lower 9th Ward earlier this month to meet with architects who will create new house and duplex designs, which are slated to be unveiled this summer.

In the meantime, construction will continue on single-family homes. So far, eight families have moved in, six homes are under construction and groundbreaking is set for 17 more in May.

The homes are for property owners who can pay insurance and taxes, and monthly payments are based on applicants’ income and subsidized by Pitt’s foundation.

So far Make It Right has received more than 200 applications from families, and currently 85 are “in the pipeline,” Darden said. That means they are on the tail end of the application process, which includes undergoing counseling how to maintain the homes.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure these families are here for many year to come,” Darden said.

The homes are more contemporary in style than the shotgun homes and Creole cottages New Orleans is known for. But they are built high off the ground and with energy-efficient features such as solar panels, which will cut energy bills by at least 75 percent.

Darden said monthly bills have been ranging from $20-$30 a month.

“And because the power company buys back energy, some bills are lower than that,” he said.

The homes do incorporate some elements used in the New Orleans area for generations, such as high ceilings and shaded porches. They also have architectural elements to address challenges of the area, such as ventilation and mold- and termite-resistant materials.

Brad Pitt doesn’t believe in using toilet paperA couple days ago, I was able to view the complete proposal for Mickey Brett’s book that documents the life of different celebrities he has been a bodyguard for. The proposal contains a lot of information about Brangelina. I wrote about how Mr. Brett claims the pair have a baby and diaper sex fetish. Now, I am going to give you some more details and you shouldn’t read this if you have a weak stomach.

Mr. Brett claims that Brad and Angie have huge disagreements on toilet paper use. Brad doesn’t believe in toilet paper; he uses his hands and washes them afterwards. Angelina agrees with Brad that he’s helping the environment, but thinks using her hands would be totally disgusting. Brad always tells Angie that people in third world countries do it all the time. Mr. Brett thinks that the kids use toilet paper but that Brad is trying to change the rules.

This has to be a lie, right? This bodyguard must be pretty desperate. But for some reason, I can totally imagine this. Thanks for the explanation BDJ. I have never heard of the movie before so I kept trying to figure out why all the baby Jane references. All I could think of us as a connection was Brad’s Mom name is Jane . I am sure I am not the only one who was not familiar with reference or the movie. I don’t think a lot of people are familiar today with Betty Davis movies.

After discovering environmental hazards that had existed in the neighborhood and spending a fortune to correct those hazards, the rebuilding progressed at the pace set by each family - not at a pace and time schedule set by those assisting them. These families are reclaiming their homes and their lives. There are those who do not understand the program and there are those who do not want to understand the program. They are of no importance. The environmental organizations and leaders and the housing experts who have closely examined the Make It Right Project in the Lower Ninth Ward have nothing but praise for its vision, sound environmental qualities and, most importantly, the respect it is affording the families of the neighborhood as they reclaim their neighborhood.

Secondly, I will correct myself because I see a typo in my post. It was 2006 not 2007. In the summer of 2006, after they returned from Namibia, Brad went to NO to kick-off the Global Green campaign. He went alone. The trolls were here then, as now, claiming Brad and Angie were breaking up because he made a 2-day trip to NO without Angie and the kids. Later on, IIRC before they went to India, but it may have been after, the entire family went back to NO from the ceremony where the plan was chosen for the Global Green project. The day after the family returned to LA someone popped up on eBay claiming they found Brad’s underwear in the bed when she was cleaning the room. Her proof that the were indeed Brad’s undeerwear was the Thank You card that Brad had left behind for the room service people. And yes, our resident handwriting experts declared that it was indeed Brad’s signature and it was written on hotel stationary and yes, Brad, has left thank you notes for hotel staff before, so don’t even question that part of the story. He and Angie left notes in Paris and in Namibia. The one in Namibia was signed by Brad, Angie and Maddox and Maddox thoughtfully forged Z’s name, too, because she was was only a toddler and obviously didn’t know how to write.

Anyway…believe what you want. We got a lot of good jokes out of how that pair of under got lost in the sheets…

Irma, I have exactly the same experience as yours. When Brad was with X, i didn’t like him at all because of X. At that time my husband asked me how come I skiped all X related scenes when watching Friends. I always went to get myself a cup of tea or went to bathroom when X showed up on the screen. I told him it is because the role Rachael Green looked so fake and X looked very boring. She is the only one in Friend I don’t have any interest in. Later, when I heard that Brad is with Angie (at that time I didn’t follow up celebrity’s gossips at all), and especially after seeing Brad was doing so nice and so sweet to Angie and Maddox, and then the little Zee, I cannot help admiring Brad more and more (I am originally an Angie fan). ROTFLMAO. That’s not Jolie in his trailer. She is his make up artist. You can see her in last pic in here too. From distance and because of the video camera thing , she looks thinner and taller. She doesn’t even look like Jolie. LOL You Brangie’s fans must be REALLY desperate to get a pic or video of her with him in somewhere. :lol: Like She could have been there without getting photographed or spotted by any photographer or people around set.

1) Inglourious ******** (August 21) — Of course we went for the most grammatically insufferable title of the year as our top pick of the summer. That MPAA-skirting matter aside, Quentin Tarantino’s following up his half of Grindhouse with an epic concerning Jewish-American soldiers led by Brad Pitt brutally and proudly sticking it to the Nazis as WWII rages across Europe. I keep hearing about this movie-within-the-movie that co-star Eli Roth directed, so it’s a movie to some extent about movies, made by a guy who loves the things and anticipated by a bunch of writers who love movies too. In hindsight, it’s the no-duh pick of the litter from this crowd.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Paramount Home Entertainment, $29.98 for standard DVD; The Criterion Collection, $34.98 for two-disc edition; $39.99 for two-disc Blu-ray edition) — Taraji P. Henson credits tough love from Howard University’s theater arts program for setting her on the path to this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

If a Howard acting student gave a bad performance, Miss Henson recalls, he or she heard about it in no uncertain terms.

“Sit down. Next,” Miss Henson says of the hard-nosed atmosphere during her student days. “It helped me develop a very tough skin for this industry.”

That industry honored Miss Henson, a D.C. native, last year with her first Oscar nomination. Miss Henson’s performance as Queenie, the maternal presence at the heart of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” gave the film a blast of unconditional love.

The 2008 movie, to come out Tuesday on DVD, follows the odd tale of one Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt), a man who ages in reverse.

Miss Henson drew upon her own experiences as a mother to help shape Queenie — and identify with a child who didn’t fit in with society.

“I felt like it was my son’s story — being black and growing up in America can be tough,” she says. “The conversations she’d have with Benjamin were like the ones I had with my son: ‘Some people will judge you.”

Miss Henson studied her own grandmother to flesh out the physical dimensions of the role.

“I spent time with her, watching where her body was breaking down and why,” says Miss Henson, who invited her grandmother as her guest on Oscar night. “I had to decide where Queenie’s body would be giving her the most pain.”

Miss Henson didn’t win an Oscar on Feb. 22 — Penelope Cruz walked away with the best-supporting-actress honors for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” — but the nomination has given her career a boost.
