People, I think it’s simply a matter of economics. SOme pictures are very costly when they first become available. I’m sure so pitures are free like promotions - e.g., Inglourious Bees poster, Smartwater, maybe charity events which the Met Costume Gala was.

The mayor meets the star

It was a routine Saturday for Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings — a number of events to attend, including a stop in North Albany.

Also, on his “to do” list was a visit to the set of “Salt,” the movie starring Angelina Jolie that was finishing its last weekend of shooting on the highways near Empire State Plaza.

“Who’s in charge?” Jennings asked one of the set guys as he arrived. The guy pointed and Jennings went over and introduced himself to the “boss,” who said he was aware the mayor had reached out to director Phillip Noyce when the filming began.

“Is everything all right?” Jennings asked the boss, adding, “If it’s not inconvenient, I’d like to welcome Angelina to the city.”

Jolie walked over — dressed in jeans, a cap covering her hair and a light-colored coat for the scene where she jumps off a truck — shook Jennings’ hand and told him she enjoyed her stay in Albany.

The city was chosen because of the three levels of highways near the Empire State Plaza meant to represent the nation’s capital. On the set was a D.C. police car, Jennings said. “They looked at this and loved it,” he said of the roads.

****He knew the actress was staying the night and suggested, if she needed anything, to let him know. She said “Brad (Pitt) was coming over and they were going to take it easy, stay in the hotel room and watch the fight,” referring to the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton light-welterweight championship from Las Vegas, Jennings said.

Jolie invited Jennings to stay for some of the shooting. He declined, saying he had other commitments. But, before he walked away, the mayor posed with the star for a photo on his cell phone.

The brains behind SALT? It’s not Angelina Jolie nor Phillip Noyce nor Kurt Wimmer. It’s a humble Russian PhD engineer from Tula, Russia.

On the first leg of my journey to Tunisia today I sat side-by-side with Lev Yevstratov. Oh the irony, this is what you’d call pure serendipity.

All week I was tempted to corner the crane ops while they worked in downtown Albany to ask about their gyro-stabilized camera equipment. But between tight security and hectic schedules I didn’t dare bother the Hollywood filmmakers.

Then, voila, I’m sitting next to Lev, co-founder of Adventure Equipment, the brains behind building the most stable camera crane in the industry. Lev and his buddies play a vital role in the making the action scenes of SALT really fly. For the past 13 days they have assembled and engineered a giant camera crane to dolly, pan, tilt and shoot dozens of scenes around the 787 bypass.

As soon as Lev saw how anxious I was to meet him he launched into his career history. He’s expertise helped craft Titanic, The Dark Knight, 007 Bond films, PineApple Express, The Hulk, Live Free or Die Hard, G-Forces, Yes Men, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the list goes on.

“Did you enjoy filming in Albany?” I asked.

“Yes, it’s a beautiful city with wonderful architecture,” said Lev, “too bad we had no time to enjoy seeing it.”

Working day in and day out can cause accidents though and Lev admitted that one of the cameras ‘bit the dust’ when the moving crane smashed into a road sign. There goes $60G down the drain.

Lev is originally from Tula, Russia, ironic too that his hometown should be Albany’s sister city. Having been to Tula with Benita Zahn on assigment for WMHT we had plenty to talk about and photos to share.

ula is also where most of the mechanical parts of the Ultimate Arm were built. Which didn’t surprise me since it developed as a major iron-working city centuries ago. Nobody can weld, bond, braze, cement, fix, fuse, join, link and unite metal like the engineers in Tula.

If meeting Lev is any indication how the rest of Tunisia will play out, I’m in for a truly star-studded trip. Come along with me on this blog for the next 10 days where more stories of filmmaking will unfold.

Benjamin Button’ a standout on many levels

It might be somewhat long-winded, but it’s worth knowing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Director David Fincher’s film — based on a story by literary icon F. Scott Fitzgerald — is a blessing to moviegoers, and it stirs memories, albeit a bit less on the magical side, of 1994’s “Forrest Gump” or 2003’s “Big Fish.” The 165-minute run time will turn some away, but it’s well worth it. Beautifully written, wonderfully shot and carrying with it the essence of a legendary epic, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is undoubtedly one of the best films of 2008. The story of Benjamin Button is dazzling, and it is handled well by a superb group of actors. The sometimes-overrated ****Brad Pitt — known more for his personal life — gives one of the best performances of his career, and he’s aided magnificently by the consistency of Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Taraji P. Henson. Additionally, the special effects and makeup work put an exclamation point on this standout feature film. As the title says, this is the tale of Benjamin Button. Played by Pitt, Benjamin was born backward, meaning, when he arrived at birth, he looked to be close to 80-years old. As time goes by, though, he becomes younger and younger which leads to a life of loneliness. He has a few folks to count on — his foster mother (Henson) and a lifelong girlfriend (Blanchett) — but he really struggles throughout his life. His affliction won’t stop him from seeing the world, though, and it’s in his adventures and relationship with Blanchett’s character where the film finds its rhythm. The DVD is available in a two-disc package and a single-disc edition. The two-disc set carries with it a very good four-part doc and commentary from Fincher. PG-13; 2008. Our Take: 3.5 Stars.

I am beginning to feel that Brad has no respect for the mother of his children. Brad mentioned that people tell them what is in the tabs so I do not understand why he is allowing the rags to continually disrespect Angie and his kids. I was not on the ANgie should move on bandwagon before but I am beginning to thn she deserves better. Angelina has always been tabloid fodder but it seems that of late they are just bashing her character left and right and no defense from the man “who made her dreams come true”. Will it sell? The magazine used a picture of Angelina that was shot on the set of her movie, which makes this cover look fake. Plus, she’s not that recognizable. Simply using the wrong photo could spell disaster for Star on the newsstand.

I have a copy of Time Magazine. Angelina Jolie wrote an article about Somaly Mam. At the bottom of the article says: JOLIE, an Oscar-winning actress,is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commission for refugees and co-chair of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

the only reason that tabs didn’t rerun their stories from April and March 2007 in last year’s issues is because Angie was pregnant and it wouldn’t be believable. although even Angie’s pregnancy didn’t stop outtatouch from their break up issues. everyone remember those covers about Brad’s moving out and drinking in bar and the one when brad was sitting in a same big chair with a woman in that gallary and they claimed Brad had moved out. same old , same old. sources after sources they are quoting , but you know , i wonder why we never get to know the real news or plans of Brad and Angie with all these sources around the world. like where were them during X-mas , or how they all of sudden were in thailand and where were they before it.

i’m sure somewhere we can find tabs’ covers for all these years. i swear i have read Brad and fugly’s meeting alot , so did this cover about him telling everyone on his way which has alittle connection to fugly , how much he still loves her and misses her million times. and it was worse than this about Brad’s parents in 2007 , when jane visited fugly in her home which never happened again after Brad’s mom found out fugly played her dirty game with her too.

Brad and Angie have handled their own press remarkably well considering the immense smearing of tabloids. Base on their hot careers and them being named as most beautiful and most influential by People and Time magazine, Brad and Angie are positively viewed worldwide, Tabloids are not making money and the trolls are their own worst enemies projecting their lies back to their own miserable lives.
I believe that Brad and Angie have what it takes to be together for the rest of their lives.
