Angelina Jolie To Do The Cannes Cannes
THIRD TIME’S A CHARM
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are expected to hit the red carpet again at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival on May 20 in the South of France, People reports.
Brad will help promote the Quentin Tarantino-directed Inglourious Basterds and costar Diane Kruger is likely to attend as well.
Angie has been busy shooting her new film, Salt, but will probably get time off to join Brad for the Basterd-ly premiere. Check out Angie at 2007 Cannes and 2008 Cannes.

i wonder how angelina is going to react to the biography of her being written by andrew morton; the same guy who wrote the book on princess diana. morton apparently is talking to all kinds of people. i heard that one of the things he’s going to write about is angelina’s stay in a mental hospital. then there’s the book by her former body guard. all i can say is i hope angelina is prepared for what’s going to come out in those books.

The world’s most famous mother, Angelina Jolie, has taken up residence in Oyster Bay, Long Island while she commences work on her latest project, an espionage thriller entitled ‘Salt’. Local residents of Oyster Bay have been abuzz with sightings of the superstar duo, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and their brood of 6 as they have been spotted running errands around town.
One local resident, cosmetic surgeon Dr Lloyd Landsman, sent a Mother’s Day gift basket to welcome the movie star mother to the neighborhood. The huge bouquet of flowers and basket of skin care products and cosmetics was purchased from an Oyster Bay business and delivered on Sunday whilst Jolie was home to celebrate Mother’s day with her 6 children.
Jolie will portray the lead character in “Salt”, a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy who must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence. Since filming is in Manhattan, Long Island and upstate New York a temporary home in Oyster Bay is the ideal temporary location for the famous family.

Call it the Brad Pitt Effect: While locals in Oyster Bay on the North Shore of Long Island are known for their posh yet casual style, ever since the Hollywood A-lister started picking up his kids at school, local moms have ditched their flats and no makeup look for chic heels and lipstick.
“They are off the charts excited and everyone is dolled up, ” one local tells PEOPLE. “The moms are trying to look a little bit more polished. Instead of schlepping in sweat pants and messy hair, now they wear designer jeans and high heels, which they never wear. Usually it’s Tod’s or Gucci loafers. Everyone is putting a little more effort. Let’s face it – he’s a handsome guy.”
Pitt, who has set up a base in the town with Angelina Jolie and the couple’s children, is embracing his role as Mr. Mom while Jolie spends time filming her new movie, Salt. Pitt’s daddy duties include dropping the kids off at school and even reading books to the children in daughter Shiloh’s class, PEOPLE reports in its new issue.
“At school, they think they are going to bump into him,” says the local. “Brad sits in the back of the classroom a lot. He is very unassuming and very sweet and nice.”
Locals love the fact that Pitt, Jolie and the kids are often spotted at the Stop & Shop and Dunkin’ Donuts. “Who would think they would see them grocery shopping, and not sending out the help?” says a source. “They are trying to teach their kids what’s normal … And they are always in the pizza parlor and Borders Books.”

It’s not just Pitt and Jolie who have been spotted nearby: The actor recently had lunch with pal George Clooney at the Breakers restaurant in Bayville, N.Y. “I heard a woman screaming at Stop & Shop because the clerk was telling her George Clooney was at the Breakers,” says the local source. “It startled me because she shrieked so loud. Then, a few women said they were going to go down there and see if they could run into Clooney.”
Even morning donut runs are cause for people to reconsider wardrobe decisions. “I go to Dunkin’ Donuts and believe me, I even think of it,” says our spy. “I say, ‘I can’t wear those jeans, they make me look fat.’ ”
Though the people in town have seen their share of celebrities, high-wattage stars such and Pitt and Jolie are still unique. “They are A-list movie stars, and for such a small town it’s a big deal,” says the source. “Every time a big car passes, people look. It’s a big buzz. Everyone who sees them is over the moon. It just makes everyone light up.”

Our guy was sweating in the hot sun at the Rose Bowl Flea Market attempting to sell two high end Knoll lounge chairs. In the afternoon Brad walked up and gasped when he saw the chairs. “I really wanted a pair of chairs like these but I lost them at an auction - they went for $20,000! He said. How much are you asking for them? The guy replied “Fifteen hundred dollars.” Brad looked surprised “That’s ALL?” and added “Will you take twelve?” The seller was hot and it was late in the day, so he decided to accept the twelve hundred. Brad smiled and handed him a check and the guy almost fainted - the check was for twelve THOUSAND dollars! (We’ve always told you Brad was a good guy.)

I have been lurking for a while now, scanning over the craziness that is happening here. As much as I enjoy the information from the wonderful JP fans, I hate all the negativity and the cruelty that is happening on this site. I come here to get information and see what’s going on with the JPs, but now its become a bashing place for fat and ugly, women who are jealous of the JPs.
Just Jared does not seem to monitor this site appropriately as some of things that are said here are very vile and questionnable.
I will go to Pittwatch from now on and will come here to see if any news is posted, and alert Pittwatch if it is not posted on theirs. I have been on JJ for quite sometime now and is just utterly disgusted.
I hope oneday this site can get cleaned up and monitored accordingly, the JPs do not deserve what is being said about them. No one knows them personally and should not have to make up nasty lies just for their personal amusement. This only makes me hate Maniston more, and I have yet to comment much less read her posts.
I have not read the other pages of these thread, but I hope that JJ can get to clean it. These last weeks the trolls have become irritated like if the weather changes affects them.

“They are off the charts excited and everyone is dolled up, ” one local tells PEOPLE. “The moms are trying to look a little bit more polished. Instead of schlepping in sweat pants and messy hair, now they wear designer jeans and high heels, which they never wear. Usually it’s Tod’s or Gucci loafers. Everyone is putting a little more effort. Let’s face it – he’s a handsome guy.”
Pitt, who has set up a base in the town with Angelina Jolie and the couple’s children, is embracing his role as Mr. Mom while Jolie spends time filming her new movie, Salt. Pitt’s daddy duties include dropping the kids off at school and even reading books to the children in daughter Shiloh’s class, PEOPLE reports in its new issue.

Brad Pitt To Play Steve McQueen in New Biography Film
HOLLYWOOD, California — Top Gear has reported that Brad Pitt is getting ready to play Steve McQueen in the upcoming biopic of the “King of Cool.”
Hollywood sources told Top Gear that Pitt is expected to officially sign on to the as-yet-untitled film this week. The movie will be produced by Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters and will be based on the novel Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel.
The Fight Club and Troy star will get behind the wheel of a few of McQueen’s classic vehicles, possibly including the 1956 Jaguar XK SS, 1957 Porsche Speedster and 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. A reconstruction of the famous green 1968 390 V8 Ford Mustang from Bullitt is also expected for the film.
McQueen was an action hero for his time in films like The Great Escape, Le Mans and Papillon and became the highest paid movie star in 1974 thanks to his popular “antihero” persona. He was an avid racer of both motorcycles and cars.
The film will begin production later this year and is slated to have a 2010 release.

Us Weekly offered its competitor In Touch Weekly either the biggest insult or compliment this week - depending on how you look at it.
In its current issue, Us magazine ran a two page spread featuring In Touch’s covers of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston for the last 4 years.
On the one hand, the dek screams “Bogus breakups! Phony pregnancies! and Sham reunions!” However, In Touch does get the award for most inventive coverage,” according to Us.
When I spoke to Richard Spencer, editor in chief of In Touch, he said, “We’re flattered they pay such attention to In Touch Weekly…and we stand by our reporting.”
Us Weekly is “letting the piece speak for itself.”
Why is In Touch obsessed with Pitt, Jolie & Aniston?
When you look at the spread, it appears that In Touch cannot get enough of the lives of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston.
Spencer explained why In Touch offers its readers this type of continuous soap opera like coverage:

I saw this yesterday on Jezebel and was LMAO. I started thnking about all the covers that US left out. If they had done every B/A cover OuttaTouch has done since 2005…they’d have used 6 pages advertising their rivals rag. There was a survey of tab covers that Jossip did last year and out of 52 issues in 2007 OuttaTouch had Brad & Angie on the cover 44 times. Lies & Shite had them on the cover 42 out of 52 - or something like that. That’s close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades…

Brad Pitt To Play Steve McQueen in New Biography Film
HOLLYWOOD, California — Top Gear has reported that Brad Pitt is getting ready to play Steve McQueen in the upcoming biopic of the “King of Cool.”
Hollywood sources told Top Gear that Pitt is expected to officially sign on to the as-yet-untitled film this week. The movie will be produced by Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters and will be based on the novel Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel.
The Fight Club and Troy star will get behind the wheel of a few of McQueen’s classic vehicles, possibly including the 1956 Jaguar XK SS, 1957 Porsche Speedster and 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. A reconstruction of the famous green 1968 390 V8 Ford Mustang from Bullitt is also expected for the film.
McQueen was an action hero for his time in films like The Great Escape, Le Mans and Papillon and became the highest paid movie star in 1974 thanks to his popular “antihero” persona. He was an avid racer of both motorcycles and cars.
The film will begin production later this year and is slated to have a 2010 release.

You know it just may be true. Brad is pretty relentless in his pursuit of his modern furniture. It is a passion with him. A friend of mine who lives in NOLA (where I used to live) swears to me he was at the flea market down there that is held by Cafe DuMonde when the JP’s were living in the French Quarter.

PT, I can believe the flea market story. For years I used to frequent the rather famous Georgetown Flea Market here in DC. Amazing what was on offer. The Rose Bowl Flea Market is an incredible treasure trove. Smaller but comparable in quality to the Brimfield Flea Market in Massachusetts. Anyone looking for mid-century pieces would be checking the Rose Bowl out. Besides being fun you really can uncover that elusive holy grail and if you know your stuff you can get a great deal. So despite Charleton’s rep, it could be true. Maybe just not told to her.

Angelina is on the cover of Psychologies magazine. I was like what is this? The cover is sheer beauty of course. So I quickly turned to the cover article as I was pressed for time. Generally she’s the cover girl because the editors feel that she’s an example of a woman who has faced certain issues in her life head on. She made no apologies or complaints and managed to turn it around. They did a round up of her past quotes to support the article and all in all it’s nothing really new. At least for fans. Other’s will probably think that they found something new.
This magazine is obviously a trade magazine so it hasn’t been picked up by the news wires. I cheked. Let’s see what happens after my post.

Not to dwell on the point but he probably has his business address on the check. The address of Plan B and/or the address of his accountants or agents aren’t secrets.

You can actually have checks with nothing but your name on them. In fact, you can use a bank check or your own check with nothing printed on it. Whether commercial vendors or stores would accept them is another matter. But I’m sure your mortgage company or power company will be happy to accept them (if you still pay by paper check) - they don’t care. Who knows if the flea market story is real or not but I doubt someone who recognizes Brad Pitt would worry about accepting a check missing his address. I forgot about the initial checks the banks give when you open an account…they have nothing on them. And now checks can be printed with special software programs. I was told the banks hate those checks because the information can’t be scanned and has to be manually entered but they do work. Thanks GC for that mental recall.

James Grey was on french tv tonight. He said he and Brad were in brasil last week scouting locations for their next project “Lost city of Z” he said he likes Brad a lot, are friends and is very excited to work with him. Shooting starts first week of September and after he is done with his jury duty in Cannes he will begin the casting of the other parts. He said he’s honored to be part of the jury. Talked about his vision for Lost city and for him this is a huge change from eveything he has done before.
He also mentioned he and Brad flew together from Brasil to Cannes last sunday and are having meetings everyday about the script and told a funny story about their time there, something like even in the middle of the jungle locals knew who Brad was. He also talked about working with Joaquin Phoenix, said he is a brilliant actor but he doesn’t know him very well and doesn’t know anything about why he quit acting.
They are going to have interviews with Tarantino, Almodovar, Penelope Cruz , Ang Lee and Harvey Weinstein talking about Nine and ******** next week.

If a teenage boy was living in the Bertrand household then I assume he was having trouble at home, wouldn’t you? Where were HIS parents through this time? It sound like he needed a place to live and Angelina’s mother gave him a home for a while. Who even knows if her mother knew they were having sex. And who knows what exactly we are talking about? The internet is incredible in the judgment that people think they can rain down on people they don’t even know.

Except for the cutting Angie was in her late teen before she really had enough freedom to experiment with her life. Juliette was an emancipated minor BY age 14. BY AGE 14! Her father is actually a fairly well-known tv character actor, Geoffrey Lewis. Juliette, like Drew Barrymore, started her wildchild years when her age was still in single digits - drugs, booze, sex, hanging with a much older crowd and she was still into all that stuff when Brad met her. I doubt there’s much Angie could say she’d done in her past that would shock Brad. Sorry, trolls, he’s been there and seen it up-close with Juliette and his parents know it. Angie was a 30 year-old WOMAN and a responsible single mother and a humanitarian of some reknown when his parents met her. Long past her “wildchild days”.

BTW - your recollection of Charlton is fairly accurate. Even 15 years ago when she was doing spots on E! she was an older woman with dyed blond hair, skinny as a rail, ton of make up and she dressed too young for her age. The stereotypical HW blond trying to hold on to her youth. Her liking X makes perfect sense now, don’t it? She looks like she could be Florence Henderson’s sister. Here’s a small pic I found. I don’t know how old it is, but she’s got to be will into her 60s by now.

We watched most of the extras on the Benjamin Button dvd the other night. Really interesting. I love all the behind the scenes info. Fincher is fascinating and kinda hot. He really has quite a mind. When I finally watch the actual movie again I may do it first with Fincher’s commentary.

Isn’t it time Steve Zahn grew up? Ever since the ’90s, this walking quirk of an actor has pushed his dazed solipsistic zaniness (he’s like Michael J. Fox’s hillbilly cousin), but he’s 41 now, and it no longer looks cute on him. In the indie dud Management, he’s a slacker motel clerk who comes on to a guest — a corporate lonely girl played by Jennifer Aniston in lank brown hair and a why-did-I-ever-say-yes-to-this-script? grimace. She proceeds to not treat him like the benignly annoying stalker he is. The scene in which Zahn, standing outside Aniston’s house, performs an off-key-warbling-plus-electric-piano rendition of Bad Company’s ”Feel Like Makin’ Love” is obviously intended to be a parody of John Cusack’s famous boom-box serenade in Say Anything. But here’s a question for contemplation: Just because the moment is meant to be cringe-worthy, does that make the cringing any less painful? Grade: D

Hello to all Jolie-Pitt Fans!
I am basically a “Lurker” on this board, but I have to say I am a bit surprised at how the JP Fans are wondering why there is such an “attack” by the very despicable tabloids against Angelina.
I don’t know how anyone else sees this all out attack happening at this time against the most beautiful woman in the world, (an acknowledgement that is made over and over again by so many people and magazines worldwide), but I see it as a major tool of distraction from all that was about to be written and spoken about “she who will remain nameless” by the tabloids themselves.
Is it a coincidence that almost from the instant the hag was dumped for the umpteenth time - that Angelina has come under attack? I tell you NO.
And she, “the nameless one” has genuinely earned the distingushed title- “THE Serial Dumpee” - ALL of her former boyfriends have run away from her- and not looked back, and this last boyfriend was on the verge of doing a virtual “tell all” or rather “sing all” - in song - of his own pain, and what it was like being stuck in her negative aura - until his “contract” was up, that her PR team HAD to come up swiftly with a way to take the attention off of her miserable situation and place it some place else. And where better to place that attention than on “The Jolie” herself.
Whiny had already “laid the groundwork” with her constant psycho babble and “oh pity me” speech about how no relationship “lasts forever,” - she being the Prime Example and Poster Girl of a “Never Lasting Love” could speak from experience, and, from what her ex said about her…..straight across her forehead, in big bold letters, the words “Dead End” should be permanently inscribed to ward off and protect any future unsuspecting, innocent would be suitors.
So her PR people, seeing the “tabloid writing” on the wall, and her plumped and frumped and bloated face plastered on every tabloid magazine around the globe, set about their dirty work to flip the spotlight off “the hag” and shine it on the Beauty - and the Prince. The Prince the hag will not shut up about.
And the PR team, knowing the tabloids can be bought and sold cheaply, and no real creativity is required to run or edit one of their magazines, convinced them that there are still “hag” fans out there who will gladly spend their last dime on the sleezie tabloid magazine that could sell them a “hag fan-fiction” that would appease their longing to see the “hag” (the stupid readers, seeing the hag as themselves in their silly dreams) and the Prince back together again.
And since ” the hag” had been dumped for the nth time, shouldn’t “the Beauty” be pictured as being dumped by the Prince? Wouldn’t that be a wonderful scenario to take the focus off of “our hag” they thought in their simplicity. And all they would need to do is pull out the last 4 years of their very own “The Prince leaves the Beauty” stories and recycle them. No thinking, and no creativity required.
So Outta Touch, Lies and Deceit, and Fading Star magazine all took the bait and jumped in with their claws and fangs to do the PR’s bidding, all the while visualizing lots of money pouring into their coffers for the junk they were about to dump on the “unsuspecting” public for the 5th year (?) in a row. Boy…are they smart business people or what????
Have they (the PR team) succeeded in getting the attention off of their high paying client? You bet they have. Albeit temporarily!
They are using every LIE they can recycle to squeez every single dime out of the hag. And she gets a “bonus” for she can come across as the “innocent” bystander by having her PR team issue a “denial” of their very own regurgetated lie and present themselves as having “clean hands.”
And they are getting a lot of mileage out of their sordid and underhanded dirty deeds too. Because they are sending a loud and clear message to every “star” or wannabe “star” out there that you’d better have a PR team to “Protect” you. “Don’t be like the Jolie,,,,,this is what happens to actors who do not have a PR team to watch their back.” In other words..”Pay the extortion money or get crapped on.”
So, dear JP fans, do not be dismayed or surprised at what has been happening to our beautiful Angelina. She will come out of this the Victor and stronger and more beautiful than ever. All lies come out of dirty filthy minds, but they also return to the originator of the lie because the lie belongs to them, they gave birth to them, they own them, they are their dwelling place, and all lies know their way home.
Should we support US Mag in their attempt to “out” “Outta Touch for their Lies? What do you think? He who is NOT against you..is for you!

The tabloid would never write a negative story about manisotn unless it’s painting her as a sad lonely woman pining for brad pitt cause that’s what the readers want to read. Brad Pitt is the one who has the most to benefit by having his PR leak lies to the tabloids to protect his own image.Don’t you notice how he’s NEVER the bad guy? A few blind Item sites are slowly leaking real info on Pitt . There are plenty of action-packed films with muscle-bound male heroes running around shooting bad guys and blowing things up, but where are the tough girls, the brainy, independent girls this summer? They must all be hanging out in science labs and old bookstores, because they’re few and far between in the films most folks are likely to catch during the summer blockbuster season. Even Angelina Jolie, one of the few female stars who can actually transcend genres from action flicks to Oscar bait, is absent from anything exciting this year, although fortunately there are a few glimmers of strong female characters here and there. A few films aside, it’s gonna be a long summer on the femme film front.

“Hi, I’m Angie.” This is how Angelina Jolie — a woman who needs no introduction — introduces herself. Jolie is many things: a humanitarian who has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations since 2001, a doting mother to four young children. And she’s an actor — an amazing one at that.
If people forget that last part, it might be because Jolie is also a tabloid staple, through no fault of her own. She has never been one to seek out the spotlight, and yet we understand the world’s fascination with her: From the moment she stepped on screen, it’s been clear there is something powerfully magnetic about Jolie.
Though she was born into an acting family — her parents are Marcheline Bertrand, who died earlier this year, and Jon Voight — and has been in the business since she was a teenager, it was Jolie’s roles in two cable biopics that made the world take notice. First was George Wallace, in which she played the wife of the controversial Alabama governor. But it was Gia, in which she devoured the screen as fierce and needy supermodel Gia Carangi, that made Hollywood pay attention. She won back-to-back Golden Globe Awards for her work in the films and established herself as one of the most exciting young actors to watch. She then earned a third Golden Globe — for Girl, Interrupted, in which she stole the spotlight from Winona Ryder and ended up with an Oscar for it.
The following years would prove to be a mixed bag of commercial blockbusters (Gone in 60 Seconds, Tomb Raider), ambitious failures (Beyond Borders, Alexander), and critical savaging (Original Sin), but Jolie was always captivating. In 2005 she scored her biggest hit with Mr. & Mrs. Smith, an action-comedy that tapped into the actor’s smoldering sexuality, charisma, and sense of humor. She can currently be seen (in animated form) in another blockbuster, Beowulf. This year she wowed even her biggest fans with a gut-wrenching turn as Mariane Pearl, wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, in A Mighty Heart. Directed by Michael Winterbottom in a stark, almost documentary style, the film details Mariane’s ordeal from Daniel’s kidnapping to the birth of their child, Adam. It’s a project close to Jolie’s heart.
Back Stage: Growing up the daughter of actors, was it a forgone conclusion you’d enter the business?
Angelina Jolie: It might have been the opposite. In some ways it was good, because I remember being very conscious of how human and regular actors were; even though my dad was a successful actor, he was very much a regular person. I suppose the one good thing about being raised in it is that you don’t have the illusion of actors being magic or special. You have a real sense that it’s just work.
Back Stage: What led you to attend the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute at 16?
Jolie: My mom studied with Lee Strasberg before he passed, and she loved him, so she wanted me to go there. I trained there a little bit, and they put on plays. It was fun. I’m not great at theatre; I think certain people are great at it, and I don’t think I have the talent that other people have when it comes to being on stage.
Back Stage: Do you still study acting or work with coaches?
Jolie: I used to work with my mom. She was the most amazing support for an actor. She used to write letters to my characters. For Girl, Interrupted, she bought me the hand puppet that I ended up using. If I’d do a sexy role, she’d buy me perfume. She always read the script, made a bunch of notes, and wrote these letters. She was a great person to talk to about things, and she loved the process so much. So now I suppose I try to hear her voice in my head.
Back Stage: In your Oscar acceptance speech, you thanked your mother for giving up her dream of becoming an actor. Could you ever leave acting behind?
Jolie: Oh, absolutely. I’ve been really, really lucky to have a career as an artist where I’ve been able to have the roles where I’ve expressed a lot and been able to play all different types of women. And I think a lot of actors still feel there’s a lot inside them that they want to communicate or something they have yet to discover. And I don’t feel that as much now as I did when I was younger. I feel like there’s a lot to discover about myself as an adult and as a mother but not as much as an actor. There aren’t those roles where I feel I’m the one who needs to do it. I start to read things now, and I think, “Somebody else would be better at this.” Oftentimes I’ll get a call, and they’ll say, “This other person would really like to do this role.” And I’m the first to say, “Well, then they should.” Because if they really want to, then that’s who should do it.
Back Stage: Do you ever have to audition anymore?
Jolie: Not really, but for Good Shepherd I had to meet with Bob [De Niro], and we looked at the scenes and read it and talked about it. Because I think he wasn’t convinced I could play somebody light, a debutante. And that’s why I wanted to do it. He didn’t know me and wanted to meet me and see if I could do it. But I liked it; I don’t necessarily want the roles that you’d assume I could do. I think, like most actors, you want the roles that they’re not sure you can do.
Back Stage: Are you someone who has always auditioned well?
Jolie: No. I think I was starting to audition around 16, 17, and would be going out for the girlfriend or the girl in high school. And I was just never that girl. I was always told that I was too dark. I went through a period, years ago, when I was told I was too ethnic. Isn’t that strange? Now I’m not ethnic enough on occasion. But there wasn’t something regular enough about me; it just didn’t fit. I went on a hundred auditions; my mom and I actually checked off the hundredth. I think my first job was as a crank addict in a film, and then my second job was, like, a cyborg. So it was clear that my career was going to be full of very bizarre, strange women — which ended up being the ones I liked anyway.
Back Stage: What was your worst audition?
Jolie: I had a really bad one for Wallace, a film I actually ended up getting. It was so bad, in fact, my manager [Geyer Kosinski] had to calm both me and [director] John Frankenheimer down. I read the character was sexy, so I went in and put on bright red lipstick and a black dress. It was a period piece, in the ’60s. Now, I don’t have big issues talking about my father, but I was trying to find myself. I walked in, and I was nervous, and I did my reading, and the first thing John Frankenheimer said was, “So, Jon’s your father.” And my heart just sank, and I thought, “He didn’t pay attention to anything I just did.” He said, “How’s he doing? What’s he up to these days?” I don’t know what it was, but I just got somewhat rude in return. I said, “I really don’t know; why don’t you call him? I have to go.” And I got a call from Geyer, saying, “You stormed out, and you were dressed like a geisha girl!” I said, “He was rude, and he didn’t pay attention to what I was saying. He didn’t even care about me as an individual.” He said, “Please go back.” I said, “I’m not getting in a room with him.” But he calmed us both down and said, “Don’t wear red lipstick, and try to go in with a better attitude.” Strangely enough, Frankenheimer and I ended up becoming best friends. We loved working together. He’s just a straightforward person who doesn’t mean to be rude, and I was overly sensitive. But yeah, we definitely went head to head when we first met.
Back Stage: After you shot Gia, which would prove to be a breakout role for you, you made the choice to stop acting for a while. Why?
Jolie: I didn’t feel I had anything else in me at the moment. I shaved my head at the end of it — there were pockets of hair we shaved for the dying scene. By the end of it, I had to actually shave my head. I separated from my husband [Jonny Lee Miller] at the end of that. And I signed up for screenwriting and directing at NYU, and I moved to New York and didn’t know anybody and went to school.
Back Stage: What brought you back?
Jolie: I started to get acknowledged for Wallace and Gia, and it became uncomfortable to go on the subway and go to school. It just got weird. But it was a really great time, and it was important for me to step back and re-evaluate and get out from in front of the camera for some time.
Back Stage: Is it true you don’t have a publicist?
Jolie: It is. I don’t have an agent either. I have one manager, and I’ve had him for 10 years. He started as an agent years ago, but he’s been a manager almost as long as I’ve been with him. I tried to have an agent for a few months. And I tried to have a publicist for two days. And neither worked out. I’m very specific about what I like to do, and I’ve been very fortunate that through working it out myself, I can somehow manage something. I’m sure that some people would disagree that I can’t handle publicity properly, but I tend to ignore it.
Back Stage: What was the process of doing performance capture for Beowulf like?
Jolie: I think a big misconception about those films is people think you just loan your voice. You have days of the camera mapping every body part and 80 different facial expressions. After you’ve done your mapping, you get in these jumpsuits and you go in with your other actors, and you’re in this big box, and it’s like you’re doing theatre. So you do everything physically you would do. There are over 300 cameras at every angle, and it’s a performance piece. They even have new things that go on your temple so it reads your eyeball movements. Everything is exact.
Back Stage: Was it difficult?
Jolie: It was so much fun. There’s something about getting a handful of actors like Anthony Hopkins and dressing everybody in these stupid jumpsuits with balls all over you that takes you immediately back to being in theatre school and playing, and we got so goofy, jumping around. It was reminding you what it was to just be an actor.
Back Stage: You’ve earned some of the best reviews of your career for playing Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart. Was there some sense of irony for you — someone so often in the news — to play a journalist?
Jolie: Certainly the thought of it had some irony. But the more I got into it, the more I realized there’s a real divide between tabloid and real journalism. And it was nice for me to get close to people who focus on reporting the truth — that’s their life’s work, and many of them are willing to die for it. And that’s such a noble profession and such a beautiful thing. So in my mind, there was a line, and the two weren’t the same at all. And it was good for me to reach that conclusion. I love great journalism. I appreciate and need good reporting, like anybody else.
Back Stage: You had a friendship with Mariane long before you chose to play her in the movie. Did being so close to her make it easier or harder to tell her story?
Jolie: Oh, God. [A long pause.] It was both. The more I got to know her and [Daniel Pearl's] parents and her son, the more pressure I felt. She never came to the set, but she was there the night before we started shooting in France to wish everybody luck. Our kids are great friends, and they were sitting together, and I was thinking, “One day Adam is going to watch this, and from tomorrow on I’m going to try to represent how much his parents loved each other and who they are and how his mother felt about this happening.” It just became one of the biggest responsibilities to another person that I’d ever had. So that was very hard. And it was also hard to kind of mimic her, because she became somebody I knew. So it was almost like if somebody said, “Stand up in front of your close friend and do an impression.” It’s horrible. You don’t want to do it. But from the beginning, she felt that I should do it. So I just took her lead and thought, If she has faith in me, I guess it’ll be all right.
Back Stage: How important was the mimicry?
Jolie: We thought about that a lot. Michael doesn’t like any kind of wig or contacts; he doesn’t want touchups on set; there’s no trailers. And I didn’t want anything that would stop the process. He and I talked about it, and we had actually said if it was going to take too long to get it on or be at all distracting, just forget it. So we had a test, and some people I’ve worked with for years found contacts in seven different shades of brown, and we tried a wig. The feeling from everybody was if everybody looks at this and is almost distracted by it, then we’ll have to figure out something else. But we all felt it was all right.
Back Stage: Nothing can take you out of a movie faster than a bad wig.
Jolie: I remember when I put that wig on. We did the camera test next door to our house, and I came over, and I saw my son, and he said, “Why are you dressed like Adam’s mommy?” And I thought, “Oh, we’ve got it!”
Back Stage: And you did end up going with contact lenses.
Jolie: I think you have to have a long talk. We tested in sunlight; we tested in dark rooms. In Gia she had brown eyes, but we didn’t go for contacts. Because at the time, the camera we were using wasn’t letting enough light in the eyes, and it was losing life. Ultimately [with A Mighty Heart] we didn’t want people to be distracted. There were just so many things that could go wrong, and it was something we all wanted to do so right, with all our hearts. So we were just so happy that it came out all right. All I was waiting for was the call from Mariane and the word from his parents. I could have gotten every bad review across the country, but when they told me that they felt strongly about it, it was — that was the only thing that mattered.
Back Stage: How did you know when she had seen it?
Jolie: I knew Mariane saw it because she called the studio one day and said she was ready to see it. And I had heard that. And then I didn’t hear from her for a week. And I thought, “Oh, no.” I was heartbroken. And then I got the most beautiful email from her. She’s such a gracious, gracious woman.
Back Stage: How did you get to a place of such emotion for some of those gut-wrenching scenes, particularly when Mariane learns Daniel isn’t coming home?
Jolie: The strange thing about the film is, because we shot it almost documentary-style and pretty much in order, because this was a story we all knew, there was something haunting about retracing the steps of this real incident. And when the [hostage] pictures came through on the email, it was that odd feeling of, We’ve seen this in the papers, and now we’re sitting in this room, and God, what it must have felt like for her to get these pictures. So that carried us through the whole film. As we were getting near the end, we all started to get very quiet those last few days. The night they had to come back and tell me, we were all very emotional anyway. Usually as an actor, you come forward and think about in your mind something happening to somebody you love. My mom was sick at the time, and I thought, “I’ll allow myself to think about that.” But something happened on that night where it just didn’t seem necessary to think about anything else, and we all just kind of purged whatever it was that we’d been feeling for the months about the horrors of the reality of the situation. And we all just became really emotional. It’s a strange experience for an actor. Fortunately, as an actor I knew not to clutter it with something else and allow it. That was the choice.
Back Stage: You’ve worked with so many amazing filmmakers. What do you hope for in a director?
Jolie: The ability to be decisive. There are so many directors that seem to just not wake up sure of exactly how they’re going to do something in a day, and there’s a lot of people waiting for them. And it doesn’t inspire confidence. I’m having the great fortune of working with Clint Eastwood right now, who’s probably the most decisive human being on the planet. He’s famous for doing things quickly, and it’s not because he doesn’t have the energy to do it a thousand times. He’s just very clear about what’s going to be in the movie, what’s not going to be in the movie, what not to waste people’s energy on, and can make a decision on the spot about huge things. So even a few weeks into this film, I actually know in my mind what it is we’re making.
Back Stage: Acting is only one of your careers. How did you become interested in humanitarian causes?
Jolie: You start traveling around, and you notice there’s quite a lot you don’t know. I’m fascinated by other cultures and histories, and I realized I didn’t quite get the education I wish I had. So I wanted to learn more. Wanting to learn about what’s going on with people of the world, you just come across different things. I came across refugees, and I was just really shocked that there could be that many people uprooted. As you do in life, sometimes things just ring true to you and become things you know you’re passionate about. So I called Washington one day and went to an office and started to do research. A few weeks later, I was on a plane into Sierra Leone. And grew up 10 years as a woman just being in a situation that I just did not know existed in the world. And was never to want for more after that day. Was never to complain about silly things after that day.
Back Stage: Do you think these interests led to you wanting to become a parent — you adopted your first child, Maddox, in 2002 — or was it the other way around?
Jolie: I think it came hand in hand. I think the reality of it grounded me in a way where I suddenly realized that I did care about children in that way. And I was grounded enough at that time in my life that I could give my life to this. I think you make that decision when you’re a mother that you will never be that thoughtless again of how you are with yourself. Thank you to nebuleuse for the Back Stage interview. I haven’t been to this site for awhile. But I had to come from luking to say how much I enjoyed this interview. That broadcast already happened and I heard the Intouch Weekly editor admit that he visits the site ianundercover daily! Surprised? See I always knew that the magazine`s obsession with Jolie and Pitt had more then economic reasons! By the way did you notice a difference in the appearance of the website Intouchweekly? Maybe they have different sponsors locally but believe in my country (I live in Europe) the named website had a sponsor situated in Hong Kong. I knew In touch got their stories from that guy. They are sick! someone should start complaining to In touch about using a known liar to smear Angelina jolie in their magazine. Of course they won’t care but at least they’ll get complaints.
Star mag and Intouch both get their lies from IUC and Female First. Actually, they take some things straight from some posting on this site , too.
Calm down! Intouch do not dare to post Ian`s most outragious stories YET although that may change! Please don`t quote my post in your e-mails to Intouch. I am quite proud of what I achieved regarding the lost sponsor but I don`t want to get any trouble!
@clara: They may not take his lies word for word but they do take the base of some of his lies and write around it. Star, too. The last star cover with Angelina plots against jen is something very similar to what that IUC -liar says.
Of course, the risk is that if Angie does go to Cannes, she will wig out on the Red Carpet.
