OlderAngelina Jolie Spotlights Child Soldiers
Angelina Jolie attends the trial of a Congolese warlord charged with using child soldiers held at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, on Tuesday (May 19).
The 33-year-old activist said the case against Thomas Lubanga is a “landmark trial for children.” She continued, “Children deserve special protection. Using children in conflict is a heinous crime and destroys the very fabric of a society. I imagined how difficult it must be for all the brave young children who have come to testify against him.”
One ICC attendee added, “I notice the petite figure which was supported by those shoes and that it was Angelina Jolie! She is much more beautiful in person than in any magazine or interview. If that’s what she looks like in print then she is not very photogenic… she spoke French to her colleagues.” More about Angie at Lauraware!
The United Nations estimates up to 250,000 child soldiers still fight in more than a dozen countries.

Awesome. This is the aspect of Angie that I love the most. She could care less about Cannes or the Academy Awards, protecting and helping the world’s children are her true passion and this is what she is all about. I would much rather read about her experience in The Hague than see her and Brad on the red carpet, although that is always nice too :-) Kudos to Angie for attending the trial and bringing attention to it because let’s face it, most people (including myself) had no clue this trial was even taking place until reading about Angie being there.
And I hope Thomas Lubanga either rots in prison or better yet gets the firing squad and ends up dying a slow and painful death with a shot in the belly.

So today I woke up around eight and started getting ready to go to the ICC. It’s quite an interesting endeavor to start going in the direction of something when you have no idea where you are going. So I started with buying a ticket to the Hague, and then getting on the train. I first got off at the Central station, and found the nearest tourist/map shop. There I was introduced to a very nice shop owner who not only sold me the map but also made sure I knew exactly how to get to the ICC, and he gave me a taste of the Hague (that’s what he called it). It was a little hard candy that tasted like coffee. It was just that extra boost I needed to head off to the ICC. (mental note to go back and buy the bags of the coffee candy…delicious) So I went back to central station and got on the train to Voorburg. Voorburg is another part of the Hague where the ICC is located. After getting off the train I started looking around…the shop owner said to look for the white building. Luckily it wasn’t far. Less than a block away was a formidible white building which exuded justice. It really did. It just looked like the ICC. As I got closer it really looked like the ICC with all the tall fences and special security. Today I thought it would be nice to get introduced to the ICC by simply just going to the hearings. I went to the hearing and as I was led into the visitor room I was instructed between the V.I.P. areas and the “common” areas and the witness areas. I took a seat on what ended up being the V.I.P. row. oops. One thing I do here is I always scan the room and check out what shoes people are wearing. So I looked to my left and saw a wonderful pair of black stilettos. Immediately I thought American…or foreigner at the very least, but the woman’s profile was gorgeous and it reminded me of Angelina Jolie. She seemed to be immaculately put together and I was quite surprised when during the private sessions (when the witness chooses not to have his answers broadcasted to the audience) she spoke French to her collegues. Yet there was still that distinct American accent. The witness was discussing the torture methods in the training camps, torture methods which were applicable to both adult and child soldiers within the UPC. Some of the things which were described were not even fathomable to me. They would also periodically show the face of the accused. At times, when the answers directly incriminated him you could see in his eyes a fire and a passion that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before. Someone who was pleased with his torture methods and someone who felt little remorse. It was written all over his face in those moments. Yet there were also moments of just routine military discussion in which you saw a different side to him. A relaxed presence which could send chills down your spine because of his nonchalant demeanor suggesting he had done no wrong. After the incriminating testimony was given which suggested the perpetrator’s role in war crimes against children the woman sitting just a few seats down on my left got up to leave. I looked over to wish those wonderful shoes goodbye and I notice the petite figure which was supported by those shoes and that it was Angelina Jolie! She is much more beautiful in person than in any magazine or interview. If that’s what she looks like in print then she is not very photogenic. Now it all made sense why she was wearing ridiculous shoes and each of her hairs was in a perfect pony tail. She is also much more petite than I imagined her to be. I was a little star struck to say the least. But alas the trial was to continue and I was to hear more testimony of war crimes committed by the UPC.
Following the recess I went to check if I could just walk into the building…definite not. Apparently it’s pretty uber secure. So then I decided to go back in the the city centrum and get some food along with getting the next train back to Leiden. So now I’m here in Leiden. Completely amazed at my day. Oh and I almost forgot to mention. I have made some contacts to interview later this week. Success.

I am sure the UN campaign against child soldiers and the work to rahab these victims will see an upsurge in donations as a result of her attention. By helping children around the world she is helping her own children.

Further, these trials are absolutely fascinating. Who wouldn’t want to be there. These are similar to the post WW II trials.

AJ is a UN ambassador for refugees. She has been committed to their cause for almost nine years. Oh wait. She is just doing this for publicity, right? For nine years she has gone to some of the worst hell holes the world has to offer being an advocate for these kids…just so folks like you can criticize her and give her publicity–’cause after all even bad publicity from the likes of your small mind is better than nothing, right?
I suggest before you make stupid comments like the one you left that you get off your lard a-s-s and go over to Africa and check things out for yourself. It is easy to go over and volunteer in orphanages, refugee camps and the like. Just google volunteer Africa children or some such thing–I’m sure something will come up that will fit your mental capacity.

considering that this recently got posted and there’s all these comments, i can tell the jolie is kinda popular. i saw this story on another site. well atleast she “doing” something…which is more than i can say for a lot of people who are in the same business. i doubt most of the people who have read this story circulating on the interweb know who THOMAS LUBANGA is, but i hope people take the chance to learn about him and learn about why it’s a really important set of issues even if it’s on the other side of the world. lubanga will not win this case, and i hope it will allow for more cases of people like him and all these rotten apples who are involved in using kids, mostly unlawfully for their own means. that’s why those guys who went to oprah to get hear about their invisible childrens website are important. we need more voices like that, or even celebrities who actually care to bring some of these atrocities that are happening to light. i mean anyone who has been following the news lately knows what’s been going on in sir lanka and the ltte and their use of child soldiers. lets hope for more successful trials at the hague.

I know you love Jolie, but Angelina didn’t make Brad famous or vice-versa. If he showed at Cannes alone , he’d still get the royal treatment. They’re not a package deal, they each have accomplishments of their own. She does a great work, but so does Brad. It’s an important element of why their relationship works; they are both passionate about what they believe in and that’s each other, their children and people in need.

I just don’t know many smack addicts that can have 2 bio babies in 3 years, fly all over the world where she has to go through customs - yes, even people on private planes have to go through customs, act in multiple movies, adopt a child and pass all the house visits and peering into her personal life, work for the UN where they do random drug tests on everyone, even volunteers, etc., etc., etc. I honestly don’t know if it’s possible to be born this stupid or if these people have to work at it.

Do you fans remember last year Brad went to Netherland for that architect Museum and it was just an afternoon run? I guess going to Netherland from their home in Nice must be really easy for them. Now i believe they are staying at their home in Miraval. Brad probably just had a run to Cannes for an interview on saturday and then went back to Miraval and that’s why there is no picture of him there. I think THE JOLIE is already back at their home in Miraval.

I am part congolese in my background so i know and has been very interested to what has ben happening there since 1996. There were even Jessica Lange, also as part of her job for the UN, who went there years ago saying that she never saw so much crimes against humanity made upon children and women as there were in Eastern Congo without anyone putting attention to it. I personally know friends from Doctors without borders treating victim of rapes from Lubanga and rwandese and ugandese troops, victims who are as young as 3 years old with internal wounds from rape that will never totally healed.

Do you fans remember last year Brad went to Netherland for that architect Museum and it was just an afternoon run? I guess going to Netherland from their home in Nice must be really easy for them. The problems of that region cannot be solved by more violence and foreign occupation.

that’s probably the only thing you said that i thought was actually intelligent. you’re correct. especially if you listen to the majority of educated africans and ask them what they want. the las tthing we want is america coming in and thinking they can fix everything with military occupation…but like everyone and their mother has been saying their needs to be something done about all these situations. i mean alqueda is one day going to own sudan…and then where will all you americans be. there is a growing infiltration of milita in many african countries and it just seems like the international community is taking their time fighting false wars and discussing what their benefits would be if they went into a situation like darfur and decided to help out. there are many natural resources that americans can exploit…so lets go. i don’t see what the problem is really. i mean does darfur have to declare that they have oil to have the americans come to there or what.
also i have not been following the ethnic wars and the rise of military leaders in the congo or other parts of africa because of angelina jolie. i have lived in those countries and grown up being aware of those issues. i have to. in my country we had the same problem. and we will have more. you don’t know **** about me. so stop presuming. i hope you have fun educating yourself more about african conflicts and why other people in the world should care, because more often than naught the international community has proven time and time, including america, that they will only do things in their benefit only, but not for africans.
If you are going to “do a charity” for attention or kudos, you only do it for one telethon or one interview or one season, and sadly that is what many stars and celebrities do these days. They don’t even go to the field and get their hands dirty, they sit in their mansions and talk crap but don’t do the walk. AJ has been involved with these charities for almost ten years and gets involved in every aspect of them. If she were faking, surely she would have given up years ago!! So to those saying she is faking obviously have a few screws loose in their petty little minds. I have never heard of Thomas Lubanga. So AJ’s involvement has done what it was meant to do – bring these sorts of atrocities into the open to community for the attention of the wider world in general.
