The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was one of the most anticipated film of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival because it’s the last one from the late Heath Ledger.
Colleagues Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell pitched in to finish the film, which ends with the on-screen credit: “A Film From Heath Ledger and Friends”. Here are the film’s first reviews:
Hollywood Reporter: The first big question about [director Terry Gilliam] managed to complete the film when his star Heath Ledger died in the middle of shooting. The answer is with great imagination and skill… The three stars that came to Gilliam’s rescue also make amusing contributions but it’s hard not to wonder how much better the film would have been with a complete performance by the charismatic and adventurous Ledger.”
Variety: “Especially considering the trauma and difficulties stemming from Heath Ledger’s death during production and the fact that Terry Gilliam hadn’t directed a good picture in more than a decade, the helmer has made a pretty good thing out of a very bad situation in Imaginarium.”
The projected theatrical release for Imaginarium is Friday, June 6.

I wonder if the movie will get a lot of viewers simply because Heath died during the middle of shooting, and not necessarily because it’s a good movie.

I’ve been excited about this movie ever since i first heard about it. I cant wait! I hope it’s played in my town. Sucks living in a small town ugh :P

This movie is going to be so depressing! It’s one thing to see the The Dark Knight, but to see him in the movie he was filming when he died….but it’s got an excellent cast and I like the idea they came up with to finish the movie.

#1 kind of like The Dark Knight! Granted it was a good movie but not one of the best of all time.
Mr. Heath does it again, you do realize the three actors who replaced him at the end of the shooting gave all the money they made from the movie to Heath’s daughter right?
oh that`s sad .. I`m really glad those guys stepped in .. they also gave their paychecks to little Matilda ..I really can`t wait for the movie, even before Heath passed it sounded amazing .. so definitely looking forward to it :)

To:#8 I have had imsomnia and anxiety for years. I can tell you it is a living hell. Heaths body only contained RX drugs. i don’t think anyone should judge him unless you have walked in his shoes.Heath was greatly loved and admired, just check on You Tube. I hope the movie turns out to be as great as all of his movies are. We love and miss you and thank you for the movies you have left us with. We will always remember you,Angel.
I’m interested in seeing this, if for nothing else than the novelty of the way Jude, Johnny, and Colin were used to finish it. I’m not sure I would have been interested otherwise, to be honest.
I am interested in this for a couple of reasons, #1 I want to see Heath’s final film & #2 I want to see how Jude, Johnny & Colin replaced Heath in the rest of the film. I find it facinating and sad at the same time. I will definitely see this film.

play their part. and also its Heath last film. I think reveiws will not matter because when the Da Vinci Code was shone at Cannes it got mix reviews also . But it still got a good box office.
Gilliam did the movie on the Grimm brothers with Ledger and I found it too weird to enjoy. I watched for a while and then just gave up. Not worth the trouble.

i’m sure they’ll be some photos of jude in his performance of hamlet…it opens may 29th at the wyndham theatre in london…it’s a limited engagement until aug. 22.
i dont think people will see it just because he died but for the fact other actors take over in his place.. it will be interesting to see how they manage to carry it on……… oh and johnny will make this film (he is the reason im seeing it….. sorry im a bit biased)

Wow, what Johnny, Jude and Colin did is such a testament to the type of classy guys they are. I hope this film becomes another one of Gilliam’s instant classics.

#8 Johnny, Colin and Jude were actually Heath Ledger’s friends, He met Johnny on the set of the Brother’s Grimm before Gilliam picked Ledger to play Matt Damon’s brother. Colin knew Heath quite well, and Jude met Heath while he was on The Dark Knight, Gilliam wanted Jude Law originally for the role of Tony.
Prepare to be shocked though by this movie, I read the script, it’s a bit eerie in places, particularly the opening scene. So yes, all these guys were actual friends of Heath. So was Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson, and especially Jake Gyllenhaal who is the Godfather of Matilda. Farrell has the juiciest Tony role of the 4 actors though. It was shot is sequence. RIP Heath you are missed.
JOKERGURL - very well done. The film is intriguing and off the beaten
path does not bother me i the least, as long as it makes sense to the plotof the film and isnt there to waste time,or space, or cause bewilderment. it will tantalize because of the circumstances and do well as curiosity gets the better of most viewers and as long as the word of mouth is decent. I would love to see a real release date in the US but we aren’t there yet.
Funny how life is, I guess Jude was destined to be in that film considering the strange turn of events. Being a Jude-fan I have to say he would have made seeing the film mandatory but to me it still is, at this point and I;m really looking forward to that but more so to Fri. nights’ HAMLET opening in London,which is finally within direct sight after waiting almost two years since it was first announced. “Break a leg, Jude”
This movie must be phenominal. Not only because Heath is in it but all the other actors too. They’re all amazing.
I look forward to the movie being released. Will definitely see it. Chance to see his last perfance on-screen.
