OlderClay Aiken To Adam Lambert: Sorry!
Yesterday, Clay Aiken bashed fellow American Idol contestant Adam Lambert’s rendition of “Ring of Fire”. “[I] thought my ears would bleed,” Clay wrote. “Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!”
Moments ago, Clay issued an apology, saying, “Who knew I had so much influence and that my words and opinion mattered so much to so many people!?!?! HA HA HA I’ll be the first to admit that my opinion is just that, only my opinion, but for as much as some of the bloggers seem to dislike me and care so little about my thoughts, they sure can waste a lot of their space on what I say! If only many of them took the time to pay attention to important things like the US economy and the welfare of the world’s children. But… nah… I could blog about that type of stuff anytime and most wouldn’t think twice, but let me say something that they can pick and choose quotes and misinterpret me… and it’s showtime! I never assumed my opinion mattered so much! I guess I may have been wrong.”
He continued, “That said, since my previous blog got dissected like a biology lab frog, i suppose I should clarify and even retract some of what I wrote. I am sure that some were upset by my choice of words describing my opinion of a performance I heard from Adam Lambert. I hope no one actually believed that blood truly poured forth from my ears when I heard him. I obviously meant it as a colorful statement to imply that I did not enjoy what I heard. Any performer hopes that their music will appeal to all people, but no singer realistically expects it to. God knows, I am SURE there are PLENTY of people who can’t stand to hear me sing either. I wouldn’t dream of assuming that, and I am sure that far worse things have been said about my performances than I would even venture to type here. To me, that’s fine. I don’t expect unanimous, nor even majority support for my music. But, my guess is Adam doesn’t either. I would not venture to make judgements on the personality or demeanor of anyone I don’t know, so none of what I said in my previous blog was directed as a “slam” on Adam as a person. At the same time, I wouldn’t dream of slamming him as an entertainer. He does what he does, because he enjoys it, and he obviously has many fans who enjoy it as well. If what I said in my previous blog regarding my impression of a single performance from Adam upset or offended any of his fans, I expect that the mature ones will realize that it was simply a poorly worded metaphor describing my personal tastes. The only person I would really dream of apologizing to is Adam. And the irony is, if he’s smart he couldn’t give a crap what I think of his Ring of Fire performance. As an entertainer, Adam knows that one person’s opinion of one performance really matters a little less than zero, in the grand scheme of things. He could not have gotten on Idol (nor made it as far as he did) without an immense amount of talent. He surely doesn’t need my approval to know he has a gift. At the same time, he realizes that amazing talent doesn’t always equal universal appeal. (I could NEVER have the amount of skill and talent that ballet dancers have! that’s talent! But, I don’t particularly enjoy it!) I am sure that I will have plenty of opportunities in the coming years to hear Adam sing. I imagine he’ll be around for years to come. But in the meantime, I definitely don’t want to stoop to the level of so many negative freaks on the internet… so, I do apologize to Adam for my colorful (and negative) choice of words. I hope he can forgive me. I imagine he doesn’t give a damn! :-) God knows he shouldn’t. :-) “

Wow. The longest and most insincere non-apology I’ve heard in a long time. How about actually listening to a guy before slamming him? He’s all over the internet, just check him out. He’s awesome.

That was so not an apology. Seriously, what is up with him? I remember back in grade 3, before I knew he was gay, I used to like him. And I’ve always admired him. Until yesterday when I read his blog. Seriously, Adam is sooooooooooo much better than him. Clay Aiken, you have lost a fan!
Clay finally realize that what he did will damage his dwindling career. Unfortunately, he lost one fan in me. He did not have the influence as he claims to be. It was just unprofessional of him to say negative things to a runner-up just like him and to AI which launched his career. Adam didn’t ask for the judges to praise him. It just came in naturally. And by the way, Adam deserves to be praised.

I guess Clay just realized that on his first blog he just told everybody on the net his real personality and character. We all now know the real Clay, bitter, jealous, etc. etc. If I have to pick a number, his personality and character would be at #3. Adam is way.. way better person that Clay. Adam would never say negative about anybody or anything. Adam is a very positive person, very humble, well-mannered, grateful person. All season 8 contestants would say that about him. Adam doesn’t Clay nor he needs Clay’s “apologize”. If someone told Adam what Clay said about him, he would just smile and say,”everybody has opinion’. That’s how big Adam’s personality is.
Clay is a f****** fake and one of the gays my gay friend hates–gossipy, b*tchy, and false. He only wrote that because of people like ours’ commentary and additional backlash. And I’m not reading it, but people have confirmed it’s hogwash and horse sh*t.

I read on line somewhere that Clay contacted AI and “offered” to tour with Adam which apparently was flat turned down. The AI people apparently want nothing to do with Clay. I wonder. . .does Adam need Clay or perhaps. . .could it be the other way around.

No, Aiken has an agenda susan. He has poor relations with Idol, Adam probably recognize this guy has bad PR all over him, as well as his career half-way stalled as it is, and a polite “no thanks,” and he became a bitter queen–and seized the chance to become relevant again.

Clay does make a point in that everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless of how unpopular or un-”PC” it is. But what I think everyone is so riled about is the lack of comraderie between two American Idol contestants who both came in at #2, were both sexually ambiguous in their own way, who both had powerhouse voices, and who both had/are having their time in the spotlight post-Idol. For Clay to trash talk another AI contestant so close to his own experience is just wrong! It reeks of jealousy, cattiness, envy, and just being a spoiled sport/brat about giving up the AI claim to fame and spotlight for the above mentioned reasons. It’s also sad too because it’s like we all got to listen to the inner dialogue of a fading superstar/celebrity. Before his “rant” it seemed Clay couldn’t pay someone to write about him much less give him this much free publicity - and about music no less!!! In the end Clay’s “stunt” will serve its purpose to probably fuel another album release where we can then again rehash this
“rant” and compare Clay’s vocals against Adam’s. It helps Adam too because it fires up Adam’s fans to go out and be even more vigilant in their support for him.

Geez, Clay is entitled to his opinion. Some people don’t like the sound of female impersonators in Vegas, but you can still admit they have talent.
Fact is while Clay is probably on the downside of his career, he still sold a lot of CDs and had many successful tours. Let’s see how Adam does. I really don’t know if he has a lot of strong support that will translate to sales. Kris is likable and can imagine him on radio.

Well, let me join the minority here (Team Susan and Mike) and say that I’ve always wondered how the judges raving about a performer made the fans of others vote even harder …
Insofar as the apology being sincere - who can judge Clay except a mind reader, or God? Haven’t we all said things in a moment of emotion that we felt we could have said better, more tactfully?
I could also say there was a song of Adam’s that I wasn’t thrilled about, as that’s just due to our individual tastes. (And, to qualify my comments, I’m a “Gokey-supporter-turned-Adam-admirer” as I slowly saw the talent and artistry that Adam possessed was second to none in this competition.)
Clay apologized, and I’m going to accept it at that. He didn’t have to, but he did. His career may be on the wane, but he’s enjoyed quite a bit of success being a 2nd place finisher (who also deserved to finish first). His initial comments surprised me also, and I don’t know why he made them at the time, but his apology is sufficient for me.

Another thing to remember is that Adam lost in a landslide to Kris. So obviously America had issues with Adam too. Of course they may not have like Adams flaming-ness, but his vocal style is something that can grate on some people. You have to give Clay some credit that he still has people paying whatever bucks a month/year to read his blog, six years after Idol is over. And still supposedly made more than David Cook in 2008 according to Forbes.com. I totally agree that it will probably be the last time that happens.
Just remember that there are some false Idols and we can’t judge how each Idol will do a week after the show is over. There was the same passion for both McPhee and Hicks,and we know what happened a year later. The season 7 top two seem to be doing okay according to forbes.com. I have doubts about the top two this year.

But…It’s kind of stupid to stop being a fan of someone over one thing they said that got blown out of proportion, that seems rather akin to getting up in arms about Clay forming an opinion of Adam from one performance (which is generally considered his worst). Pot meet kettle, anyone?
Clay’s a great guy who for years has taken the high road, even when asked about people who have been unkind to him. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because I don’t think he meant any harm to Adam. He answered a question that was asked by a fan and was meant to stay on his private fan board. I’d like to see the same uproar over some of the so called comedians who deliberately go on national tv and trash people for a laugh.
Adam is going to be a superstar, far exceeding any of the trails previous winners–including Ms. Clarkson–have blazed. Mr. Aiken is a vague second-ran who will never come close to touching his stardust. He’s a bore, and now we know he’s also got a jealous streak.

What mainly pizzed ‘me’ off about your comment… is that you only listened to a snippet of one performance. Personally, I didn’t like Adam’s rendition Ring of Fire either. There is no question in the next several years I will pay some serious money to see Adam ‘live’ in a concert or Vegas or wherever. Hmmm… Ivan Idea… Steve Wynnn should build the Lambert Theatre in Vegas. Would be one helluva venue.
Clay, now come on. I was a big fan of yours but this has totally turned me off. Please take a leaf out of the amazing Adam’s book and try to be courteous and gracious and loving for once.

Oh, and please read the posts from the church group of 105 that are thrilled to announce they managed to log 406,000 votes!

Adam’s popularity is overrated. That is why I won money on bodoglife.com. Looking at dialidol results you could see that Danny and Kris were getting more or equal votes than Adam. It was obvious that once one of them was eliminated it would be a landslide victory against Adam. I’m just PO’d I focused most of my money on Danny, he was only getting 3-1 to 2-1 odds. Kris was around 8-1. I finally bet on him at 5-1 during the final 4.
That’s the same way I won on David Cook. If you went by the judges opinions you’d thought David A was a shoe-in. But you have to look at the votes, and Cook was winning every week the last six weeks.
Adam is very overrated. I don’t think this batch of Idols will do well as far as selling CDs and getting radio play. You have to realize that there is a certain insanity of support for Idols a week after the show is over. Maybe in the beginning of 2010 you can get a general idea of what type of success they’ll have.

Disappointed in Clay — longtime fan and big time fan of Adam — thought that Clay had more maturity and class than that. Adam will get free publicity anyways, not that he needs it. While I have never been a Clay fan I used to respect him. Now I am not sure what to think because that wasn’t an apology. Adam is a talented and kind person. Clay why you have sunk to this sick level is beyond me.

Clay can’t win on this one. He made a mistake by saying what he said in the first place. He apologized but people don’t like the apology now. I’m sure he is sorry. Adam is very talented and should not be judged on one performance. Clay, I hope you learned a lesson here. I am still a big fan but hope you will choose words more carefully next time. Aiken’s CD sales can’t drop MUCH - they’re already just about as low as they can go now…LOL!! His last two CD’s totally TANKED. He even tried to GIVE AWAY a song a few weeks ago online, (while asking for a “voluntary” donation to HIS foundation) and got VERY FEW downloads, even counting the ones that were downloaded by people who just wanted to listen to and laugh at the horrible song. It was one that he “tried out” at one of his concerts in 2005 and was the LEAST liked of all. He’s sooo generous, isn’t he? On May 12, 2009 the Chicago Sun-Times had an article about Aiken wanting to do a duets album with Adam, and possibly tour together. How is it that he thought Adam’s music made his ears bleed when he heard Ring of Fire, and then thought maybe they could join forces? Oh, because he had liked Adam all along, and just got his little feelings hurt when Adam was not interested in Clay!

Adam knows he doesn’t appeal to everyone. He did well when the votes were divided up among a lot of people. But when it came down to two people, Kris won more votes. Of course, it helped that Arkansas gave Kris 38Million votes, and he picked up Danny’s because they have similar styles.
I think Adam hit a plateau once Allison left. He probably picked up a lot of her voters, but he finally hit a “ceiling” and that was it for him. I still think he will be a HUGE rock star and I love Adam. I really don’t care how he spends his private time.

He insinuated in his first blog that the ONLY reason Kris won was because so many people voted against Adam. Millions of people love Kris’ style of singing and songs. Kris is a true artist just as much as Adam and deserves the title on his own merit. The apology blog was almost as sarcastic as the first blog.

I agree with Anon. Adam got Allison’s votes. Danny Gokey’s went to Kris. I doubt if Adam cares. He will be an icon. I don’t care if he is gay or not, but he has done more than anyone to further the cause of gays because it has really not been an issue except when it came down to the “Christian” votes. Even our President can’t get the Christian vote! As for “Ring of Fire,” it haunts me. I think it is the most creative retake of a song I have ever seen. The song will never be the same to me again. I will always think of Adam.

Clay really did not slam Adam, he slammed his performance of Ring of Fire. I am an Adam fan, but I hated Ring of Fire. He sounded like a cat in heat. Even Simon hated the performance, as did half the viewers of American Idol. Even some Adam fans hated it so why is it such a big deal if Clay hated it. He is not alone.

I love Clay Aiken. I love him so much that it doesn’t bother me what other people say about him. I also love Adam Lambert and I feel that he was cheated out of his AI title (and so was Clay Aiken back in season 2)
These two entertainers have stage presence, sex appeal and are very good at what they do. Of course Clay knew his opinion would crawl all over the internet so he can’t exactly use that line but am sure he must have known what he was doing. He’s a smart man.
My ideal Idols are both Adam and Clay.
