Happy 34th Birthday, Angelina Jolie!
Angelina Jolie turns 34 today and received a heck of a birthday present yesterday. She topped the Forbes Celebrity 100, crowning her the World’s Most Powerful Celebrity. She’s #1! She’s #1!
The birthday girl is probably out celebrating now with longtime love Brad Pitt and their brood — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.
Earlier this week, Angie was seen shooting scenes for her upcoming espionage thriller, Salt.

I agree that power - is NOT really equal to how many magazines you appear in, how many times you are searched on the internet and how much money you earn.

To me, the Forbes criteria is weird. If you want to talk about who is more famous - then measuring the search numbers and the appearances on magazines may make sense. But fame does NOT equal power. The Queen Elizabeth of England is famous and has been for years, and I’m willing to bet that most people in India and China know there is a queen of England. But is she powerful?? NOT so much, not these days.

Their net worth?? LOL. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, George Soros, make a LOT OF MONEY and are celebrities in their own right. They should be on the list based on the money they make and their net worth, but they aren’t!! And the reasons why they aren’t is because, the money someone makes or their net worth does NOT equal power, though it might equal potential power.

They are famous and that allows them to be invited to events where they get gift packs worth thousands, but do they really have the power to change lives, change events or change hearts and minds just because they are famous - if they don’t know what they are talking about?

When they promote a cause using their FAME, they actually cause people to change their actions and DONATE even more money and take an interest in those causes they promote.

Well she did publish a book of her travelling and refugee camp experience some 7 yrs ago. She graduated high school 1 year earlier, passed 2 pilot exams in the US and UK(a difficulty exam they say), she is know to read books on world issues while in between breaks on her set…
Who knows, she may very well be doing an undergrad and going masters degree as we speak.
The lady has seen it all such as it is believable that she can write that article.
Come to think of it, why is hard to believe that she wrote that article.
FORBES list is better than the TIME mag list in the sense that Forbes uses metrics (where data can be gathered and statistics computed) while TIME is highly dependent on the opinion of the editorial staff.
FORBES list is not perfect but at least it is more objective than the TIME list.

Friday is a defining moment in the history of justice. The members of the United Nations Security Council will be presented with the results of the International Criminal Court’s Darfur investigation - an investigation that they requested. Their response will determine whether there is going to be an international standard of justice that holds perpetrators accountable for the worst crimes in the world.

The evidence the prosecutor has presented is clear and compelling. Millions of people have been displaced; hundreds of thousands have been killed and, at the center of it all stands Sudanese President Omar al Bashir who has been indicted on seven counts of war crimes and five counts of crimes against humanity. (See pictures of Darfur in crisis.)

Bashir’s response to the indictments was an insult to the international community and hundreds of thousands who have died in Darfur. He kicked 16 international aid groups who were desperately trying to save his citizens out of his country. He even appointed one of the suspects, Ahmed Haroun, to a committee supposedly investigating human rights abuses in Darfur. You’ll struggle to find a better illustration of the culture of impunity that reigns in Khartoum.

Darfur has almost disappeared from the news, and experts now call it a “low intensity” conflict. But the intensity of the crisis has not lessened for those who are struggling to survive. More than 250,000 people from Darfur have lived destitute lives in refugee camps in Chad for six years now. Camps with more than two million internally displaced persons inside Darfur are even worse. Thirty percent of those displaced are school-age children. Girls leaving the camps are raped; boys leaving the camps are killed. They want an education; they want to go back to their villages, to their land; they want peace. But they also want justice. (Read TIME’s 2004 cover story, “The Tragedy of Sudan.”)

I first went to Chad to visit refugees from Darfur in 2004. On that trip-more than five years ago-the refugees I met told me that the government was organizing the violence. About a year later, the international community came to the same conclusion. Some began to call the violence “mass atrocities.” Others ramped up the rhetoric and called it “crimes against humanity.” Nothing changed, so as the death toll mounted activists pushed the Bush administration to label it “genocide” - hoping somehow that term would arouse fear and horror.

But none of those words compelled us to intervene.

Today the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court will stand in front of the UN Security Council. With painstaking detail he will report that Omar al Bashir - a man who should protect his citizens, has attacked Darfuris relentlessly and methodically for five years, and continues to do so.

According to the UN Charter, the Security Council exists “to promote the establishment and maintenance of international peace and security.” If the results of the Darfur investigation which they ordered don’t merit their active engagement, what does?
Today the Security Council member states will be faced with a simple decision - to embrace impunity or to end it.

As they are considering Bashir’s fate they are also considering their own.

Thanks for posting this great article. WTG Angie and this is why I love and admire this woman. She is truly amazing and inspiring and that is why she is the most powerful celebrity in the world, yes others think that Oprah should cause she have more money etc but it is not all about money. Angie goes places and do things that no other celebrities does including Oprah. Do we see Oprah going to the Congo, Darfur etc? No, she don’t. She may donate money to charities etc and have her school in South Africa but we don’t see her going to places that Angie goes to and talking and interacting with the people and sometimes that is all these people need, someone to talk too and some one to listen to them and Angie does that and along with the other things that she does make her the most powerful celebrity and above all the rest. IMO

“Gambit”, That’s the title for the movie of Coen brothers, which was supposed to star Jennifer Aniston, but after the divorce the brothers promptly dumped the project, didn’t they. Oh and Coen brothers did a project with Brad, “Burn after Reading”. So sorry, guess the brothers couldn’t work with a sitcom actress.

Seriously? Angelina Jolie looks way older than 34..my god i thought she was at the very youngest 39 maybe 40. She has aged a lot and looks much older than my 30something female friends..her life really shows on her heavily.
People are way too up her ass, she is good looking but my god she has many flaws, a total buttabody. she looks much older than she is and don’t you all remember when she was a wack job and showed up at awards shows looking like a vampire, jamming her tongue down billy bob’s throat or when all she spoke about was getting off to blood and knives. I wish these sites were around years back when she was a joke.
To all those that think Oprah should have been first on the list instead of Jolie. Well IMO Oprah is powerful when it comes to making books best sellers, she is loved for giving away cars to a room full of people. She can , with one word make her favorite items fly off the store shelves. But Jolie brings attention to those who can not speak for themselves, like all the refugees in third world countries. She travels the world for the UN. She bring awareness with her fame to happenings that many are not aware of until Jolie is reported to be involved. She had brought more income to tabloids and magazine for almost five years without ever saying a word. Just Jolie’s mere presence of her walking down the street sets the media ablaze. What other person can make headlines by just taking a stroll with her children or partner? Who else can set off an avalanche of “Breaking News” because she got a boo boo on her forehead. NOW THAT IS POWER ! Like it or not she will be remembered for ever,just like so many other icons before her.

Sweetheart, we understand. Angelina really really really has power over you. She isn’t just under your skin, but she’s up your a r se, in your heart and and on your MIND. You can’t stand the thought of her being smart enough to do anything that might deserve publication in Time Magazine. But here’s the thing sweetheart. Of course Angelina could have written the article. It was an article written from Angelina’s heart, setting out views she’s expressed more than once. She isn’t after all, explaining quantum mechanics and the string theorem or molecular biology in this article you know. She’s writing about justice and trust me, even little children as young as 3 understand fairness and justice, even if you don’t.
Kudos to Angelina for her determination in seeking justice for those victims on whose behalf she has worked these many years.

There are varied routes to gaining expertise in an area. Through Angelina’s eight years working in the field of international refugees she has received untold intensive briefings on the myriad issues involved from experts in those fields, academic sorts, government officials in the US and other countries, as well as, and perhaps most importantly from those living and working in the refugee camps around the world. She has participated in conferences, had one on one meetings with generals in the field, Secretaries of State and heads of state, and reportedly continuing communication on the issues.

Angelina has at least as much, if not more, expertise than most members of Congress have on the issue. On most of her working trips she is staffed and properly briefed beforehand. That briefing is not just a quick word to the ear either as it is for many voting members of Congress. As it also is for members of Congress, this issue is not her only focus. Only the uneducated or uninformed would dismiss the expertise she has gained from her work through the United Nations and other organizations. It is an entirely false premise that one can only gain expertise through a formal education at a university.

Perhaps most disappointing are those people who will criticize Angelina or her writings as a tool to gain attention for themselves. So far, I cannot see one reason why anyone would have a quarrel with her latest commentary in Time. And anyone who would dismiss and criticize Angelina’s op/ed pieces by discussing her personal life or celebrity status should themselves be rejected out of hand.

It’s predictable that so many people feel that for some reason they have to be up Oprah’s azz. I commend Forbes magazine for being quite frankly honest. They had Angelina # 2 last year that was no problem. Now that she’s #1 that’s the problem. Over the past 4 years this woman has taken the brunt and brusies of people because of her personal life and people have even downgraded her activism and put BP on a pedestal for his work in New Orleans.
Look beyond the garbage and see what really has happened she has changed pop culture and the lives of many many people.
She doesn’t give away cars and prizes on a tv show in which is given to the Oprah show and say that she gave it to them. She gives a part of her own income and time.
Now you have the morning tv show people and some others complaining about a magazine poll in which she threatens a tv talk show queen who has done things in her past show AJ in a bad light t (eg, Jen Aniston ). That is the POWER that the folks of Forbes mag are talking about. Why all the hoopla about a mag poll?
Noone gives a flying f that Oprah is #2 they are just talking because AJ is #1.
Yea O has more money but does she really have more power. She can go anywhere in this world and noone really cares. She can go to a war torn country and noone will follow her. Can she write an op-ed about the different politcal wars and trials in a foreign country? NO
Noone cares about her love life or if she has any children or what movie she is doing next. Noone will pay 14 mil for pics of her baby.
You can also say Ange cannot do some things O can but in reality who is more powerful socially in the world not just here in the states to stay at home moms and some media outlets.
You can bet Oprah is a bit more peaved than Angie about being #2.
Can her money buy her love and a family ? No
That’s a strike right there !
