Well, according to a recent article about independent films, Indies are doing quite well thanks to a different budget profile and the fact that they are often released on Video on Demand. It seems that on video on demand , movies with names starting with the letter “A” do better than those starting with a lower letter because people scroll down the list, usually starting from “A”.

WTG Angie and this is why I love and admire this woman. She is truly amazing and inspiring and that is why she is the most powerful celebrity in the world, yes others think that Oprah should be No. 1 because she has more money etc but it is not all about money. Angie goes to places and does things that no other celebrities does including Oprah.

Do we see Oprah going to the Congo, Darfur etc? No, she doesn’t. She may donate money to charities etc and have her school in South Africa but we don’t see her going to the places that Angie goes to and talking and interacting with the people and sometimes that is all these people need, someone to talk too and some one to listen to them and Angie does that and along with the other things that she does make her the most powerful celebrity and above all the rest. IMO

Only the uneducated or uninformed would dismiss the expertise she has gained from her work through the United Nations and other organizations. It is an entirely false premise that one can only gain expertise through a formal education at a university.

This is why many love Angie. The woman is not superficial, she does not care about what is written about her or how many millions she makes. She cares about the sufferings of others and those displaced. She fights for justice for these people and that is one of the reasons many love and will continue to love her. There is no other actress like her. She is gorgeous inside and out and God will always protect her and her family.

Thank goodness we have Angelina Jolie to stand up and remind lawmakers that these atrocities have gone on for too long and there must be an end and a reckoning.

I really really admire here. I know she isn’t perfect and has made some mistakes (who hasn’t?), but she is a really a force for good in the world.

I love Angelina for many, many reasons but the main one is for her wondrous heart and her generous spirit. What she has done and continues to do on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves, is amazing to me; and I truly believe that the case re atrocities committed in Darfur by Bashir will not be as easily dismissed by the UN Security Council with more people aware of their role and upcoming decision … and that is thanks to her!

Angelina is a committed woman and dedicated to the causes she beliieves in; in addition to her kids and her man. She works hard and really makes sure she educates herself before she speaks. She has never to my knowledge tried to pressure others to believe in what she does. She has never to my knowledge pushed her beliefs on anyone. That to me says a great deal. So as a fan I am proud to call myself so. I hope the fans will post many comments. Put this thread count over the top. It will hopefully send a message on what kinds of post the fans would like to see.

Did you guys watch that Forbes video on Angie? They had some chick from OuttaTouch on there and she was talking about why Angie’s always on the cover. Earlier tonight on my way home I stopped to read the tabs. We all know about the NE story proclaiming Brad & Angie had split…but on the opposite page was a story about X collapsing on the set of Turkey Baster. It was pretty much the same story Star generally uses for Angie - except of course you have to leave out the pregnancy angle - BBBBWWWWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! -

Anyway…the story goes on to list the reasons for X’s supposed collapse. They said she was stressed from working so hard on Turkey Baster - beats the hell out of me how that happeend because in all of Jared’s pix she’s sitting on her big fat Greek ass, but that’s another story.

According to NE one of the biggest reasons X was stressed and “weakend” is because her misManagement stunk up the box office and halted her box office momentum. Basically they were saying that she’s embarrassed that her movie is barely out-earning a Mike Tyson documentary and an indie with two Mexican actors most people have never heard of before. If I hadn’t already been LMAO because of the Brad/Angie story reading the NE’s take on X’s box office dud would have put me over the edge…

The paper’s own ombudsman - whose job it is to recheck dodgy articles - found that the article was essentially unsourced and that the writer had no real sources. . Just made up BS from a writer who made a fool of himself covering the writers’ strike the year before. The same writer was called out by serious industry journalists for writing erroneous articles about the strike and essentially just taking the studios’s side and parroting their PR releases.

Thanks. June 20 is a Saturday. Unveiling new designs seems like a big enough reason for Brad to be there so I think it is possible that Brad and Angie will go to NO that weekend.

ROTFLMAO. I was over at JJB reading the news items Dulcinea13 and BDJ posted and saw this story about Moneyball having a budget of $57MIL. This is a perfect example of how Brad’s invovlement in a movie can not only get it greenlit, but get a much bigger budget than would normally be afforded a sports movie like this one. It’s why he’s (and Angie) are tied for #2 on the Forbes most powerful actors list…and why X, who pitches romcoms out the wazoo, is #57 and can’t get a movie greenlit with another star being in the movie…and even then the budget is usually considerably less than $57MIL.

Soderbergh’s Baseball Stats Movie, ‘Moneyball,’ Has a $57 Million Dollar Budget

How does a movie about successful baseball statistics game planning get green lit, let alone a $57 million dollar budget?
.
Well, Steven Soderbergh - the director of this one, titled, “Moneyball,” - did write a book called, “Getting Away With It,” but the answer seems to be Brad Pitt.
.
Put him in anything, a piece of mud with a couple of words on it and it’ll get the green light. But this L.A. Times article does put it all in good perspective and articulates just how remarkable this feat is.
.
Plus they note, that it has no love story, no perceptible villains, and “and lots of wonky baseball chatter.” Apparently the script is incredibly faithful to the source material too.
.
The final shooting script was written by Steve Zaillian (”Schindler’s List”), but still it seems like the most unlikeliest Hollywood $50+million film ever. Or at least in a long, long time. Let’s not forget, Soderbergh wants to use animation in it, as a narrative gimmick.

Soderbergh apparently is going go cast real Oakland A’s baseball players to play themselves too. “[He’s so adamant about sticking close to the tone and texture of the book that he is having many of the actual characters involved with the 2002-era events — including Oakland A’s Manager Art Howe, catcher turned-first baseman Scott Hatteberg and outfielder David Justice — play themselves.”

The film is set to start shooting June 11 and knowing Soderbergh - who again is acting as the cinematographer on this one - he’s probably have it in the can in five months and will start working, possibly shooting on something else.

Why the new Brad Pitt film is right on the ‘Money’

I have to admit that when Michael DeLuca called me earlier this year, saying he was finally going to get “Moneyball” made into a movie, I figured he must’ve been smoking the proverbial Hollywood crack pipe.
.
Anyone who loves baseball has read Michael Lewis’ bestseller about how Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane almost single-handedly upended the traditional way baseball evaluates athletic talent. Beane was a prized young baseball player who ended up being picked by the New York Mets in the 1980 major league draft. To the old scouts, Beane was considered a phenom because, well, he looked like a phenom. With his slim, muscular athletic physique, he ran, threw the ball and swung the bat the way great baseball players were supposed to.

But Beane was a bust. He ended up playing only 148 games in the majors, hitting a pathetic .219. So when Beane became a talent evaluator, eventually emerging as the general manager of the Oakland A’s, he spent far more time studying arcane statistics like on-base percentage than he did worrying about whether a prospect was tall or lean or chiseled. Beane’s shrewd wheeling and dealing and his embrace of the stats-driven science of sabermetrics helped the under-financed A’s become a perennial contender in the American League West.

As the story is told by Lewis in “Moneyball,” Beane is a classic outlaw hero, thumbing his nose at decades of baseball tradition in his irreverent efforts to transform the sport’s hidebound ideas of how to scout talent. Still, it felt like an impossible dream to imagine that Hollywood would possibly transform the Beane saga into a feature film, because the saga has no love story, no real villains and lots of wonky baseball chatter. But sometimes improbable stories do get told. Not only is “Moneyball” set to start shooting on June 11, but the $57-million project is in the hands of a first-class group of talent, with Brad Pitt playing Beane and Steven Soderbergh directing a shooting script penned by the much decorated Steve Zaillian (”Schindler’s List”).

What’s more, having read the final script, I can only say that the story is amazingly faithful to the book, capturing the rebellious energy of Beane as he butts heads with the old-school baseball establishment. Soderbergh, who will serve as his own cinematographer on the film, is so adamant about sticking close to the tone and texture of the book that he is having many of the actual characters involved with the 2002-era events — including Oakland A’s Manager Art Howe, catcher-turned-first baseman Scott Hatteberg and outfielder David Justice — play themselves.

It all started when a woman named Rachael Horovitz decided that she needed some good books to read when she went to Tahiti in 2003 for a much-needed vacation. Having spent years working at Fine Line and Revolution, Horovitz decided to strike out on her own and become a producer. She fell in love with “Moneyball,” not so much for its inside take on baseball, but because it was such a compelling example of a workplace drama. “For me, the movie is a love story about a man and his job,” she explained the other day.

The film rights were there for the taking. “Every studio had passed on the book,” she recalled. Horovitz recruited the screenwriter Stan Chervin, who’d written some other baseball scripts, to help put together a solid pitch. They took it around town, got several bites, but the studio that was the most enthusiastic was Sony, largely thanks to Amy Baer, then a production executive there and a big fan of the book.

“Everyone at Sony was incredibly supportive,” Horovitz said. “Of course, they all asked the same question — how do you make a movie out of it? I kept telling everyone ‘This is a story anyone can relate to, because it’s basically a second chance story. It’s about a guy whose early failure could have doomed him to failure, but managed to turn it into a huge life lesson.’”

Sony teamed Horovitz up with DeLuca, the longtime New Line Cinema production chief who’d also become a producer, with a production deal at Sony. DeLuca had his own reasons for identifying with “Moneyball.” If anyone in Hollywood could relate to how Beane turned the A’s into a contender without the resources of high payroll teams like the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox, it was DeLuca, who for years had pulled rabbits out of hats at New Line, as the studio usually had a fraction of the operating budget of bigger studios like Sony or Warners.

The New Line of 1998 was incredibly similar to the Oakland A’s of 2002. Just as Beane traded for unsung players when he couldn’t re-sign a costly free agent, DeLuca helped create valuable franchises on the cheap, using actors like Ice Cube (”Friday”) and Mike Myers (”Austin Powers”), who more established studios had little interest in. It was DeLuca who helped transform relative unknown filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson (”Boogie Nights”) and David Fincher (”Seven”) into cinema stars.

“I personally identify with every movie I’m involved with, which I guess makes me a total narcissist,” DeLuca said with a laugh. “But it doesn’t take much of a stretch to see New Line as the Oakland A’s, always having to make do with less while catching a lot of crap from the establishment for the crazy, unorthodox things we did.”

DeLuca and Horovitz kept pushing the script process forward. When more work was needed, they brought in the team of Stephen Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson, who’d written the Will Smith-starring “Ali” for Sony. A year or so ago, Pitt took an interest in the project, which of course put it on a front burner at the studio. Pitt was a natural for the part. As DeLuca put it: “If you try to think of a movie star who could embody someone like Beane — a former athlete who’s an incredibly physical specimen with movie good looks — you pretty much get to Brad Pitt right away.”

With Pitt interested, Zaillian came on board to do a major rewrite, with an eye on authenticity. Soon Soderbergh was on board as well, in part because of a recommendation from Fincher, who’d been working with Pitt on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

“Soderbergh was especially interested in having the story stick to the reality of the book as much as possible,” DeLuca said. “What was great about the book was that it was compelling and original, with a character who shakes the foundations of conventional wisdom. So we felt the script had to do the same thing. It had to be original. If anyone felt about a scene — geez, I’ve seen that in 10 other sports films — we’d lose what was great about the book.”

In some ways, it’s easy to understand why Hollywood finally fell for the Billy Beane story. He’s the Sammy Glick of baseball, a far closer cousin to Ari Emanuel than legendary baseball GMs like Al Campanis or Buzzie Bavasi. Beane is a scrappy hustler with a shrewd eye for talent, always playing the angles, one step ahead of his rivals, always on the lookout for the next ingenious deal.

For filmmakers, Beane brings baseball into sharp focus. DeLuca admits that although he was a Yankees fan as a boy, he really loved sports movies more than the sports themselves. “Sports films are great because they’re allegorical — they’re a great metaphor for life,” he said. “It’s how you learn about relationships and heroism and friendship and teamwork and tragedy. I guess it’s why we’re trying to stay so close to reality with this story, because in ‘Moneyball,’ the drama is all there already. There’s no reason why you have to make anything up.”

Angelina Jolie is co-chair of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation and a refugee advocate. This week she wrote an article for Time magazine, addressing the crisis in Darfur and pleading for action.

The article was powerful and she starts if off by calling Friday “a defining moment in the history of justice.” She continues, “The members of the United Nations Security Council will be presented with the results of the International Criminal Court’s Darfur investigation - an investigation that they requested. Their response will determine whether there is going to be an international standard of justice that holds perpetrators accountable for the worst crimes in the world.”

At one point in the article, she talks about her own experiences, “I first went to Chad to visit refugees from Darfur in 2004. On that trip - more than five years ago - the refugees I met told me that the government was organizing the violence. About a year later, the international community came to the same conclusion. Some began to call the violence “mass atrocities.” Others ramped up the rhetoric and called it “crimes against humanity.” Nothing changed, so as the death toll mounted, activists pushed the Bush Administration to label it “genocide” - hoping somehow that term would arouse fear and horror.”

She ends the article with one short but meaningful sentence, “As they are considering Bashir’s fate they are also considering their own.”

She gets interviewed ABOUT humanitarian issues by CNN etc. Her opinion on current events is something people want to know and her book and articles are thoughtful and well written and would not be published if they were not.

By the by Watch Gran Torino (if you haven’t seen it) it comes out on video on Tuesday. If was filmed in Detroit. from a historical standpoint it is really interesting given current events. It was filmed in the Highland Park neighborhood. Most of those houses were built by Henry Ford, founder of the Ford motor Co. There was active recruiting by all the “big three” to get workers to move to the Detroit area to be assembly line workers and the housing / neighborhoods were built for that. You can see the change in the area coinciding with the demise of the American Automobile industry. (Unfortunately, no one falls madly in love and saves the day)
