OlderAngelina Jolie Takes Time Magazine
Angelina Jolie takes to Time Magazine to voice her case against Sudanese President Omar al Bashir, who has been indicted on seven counts of war crimes and five counts of crimes against humanity.
The 33-year-old refugee advocate writes, “Friday is a defining moment in the history of justice. The members of the United Nations Security Council will be presented with the results of the International Criminal Court’s Darfur investigation — an investigation that they requested. Their response will determine whether there is going to be an international standard of justice that holds perpetrators accountable for the worst crimes in the world.”
She continues, “Today the Security Council member states will be faced with a simple decision — to embrace impunity or to end it. As they are considering Bashir’s fate they are also considering their own.”

WTG Angie and this is why I love and admire this woman. She is truly amazing and inspiring and that is why she is the most powerful celebrity in the world, yes others think that Oprah should be No. 1 because she has more money etc but it is not all about money. Angie goes to places and does things that no other celebrities does including Oprah.
Do we see Oprah going to the Congo, Darfur etc? No, she doesn’t. She may donate money to charities etc and have her school in South Africa but we don’t see her going to the places that Angie goes to and talking and interacting with the people and sometimes that is all these people need, someone to talk too and some one to listen to them and Angie does that and along with the other things that she does make her the most powerful celebrity and above all the rest. IMO

It is going to be interesting how Bashir is going to be dealt with over the next few months by the UN Security Council.

I wonder also how the failure to take strong measures against Bashir by the UN Security Council is going to affect Angelina’s own attitudes towards the UN, for whom she is an ambassador. I believe she is a pragmatist and probably sees, as many other do, including myself, that the UN, like democracy, though imperfect, is still the best system in existence at the moment. What other international organisation can replace it which won’t suffer from the same flaws as the UN today?

Still, it will be disappointing to all people if the UN Security council fails to take strong action against Bashir due to individual self interests. Somehow I just don’t see China wanting the UN to do anything against Sudan when it is looking for oil supply and minerals there.
I hope Angelina is ok - she looks quite unwell :-)

thanks jared. i wake up every day and go to time so thanks for the link. i hope she’s also on top with the tribunal reports thats going to come out about the hariri assassination. she’s totally right. the counsel should make not only the right decision, but also a decision for the victims, and africans who always get the back hand when it comes to their rights and justice matters. the counsel has a chance to come accross as being productive and not entirely hypocritical.

Kudos to Angelina for her determination in seeking justice for those victims on whose behalf she has worked these many years.

There are varied routes to gaining expertise in an area. Through Angelina’s eight years working in the field of international refugees she has received untold intensive briefings on the myriad issues involved from experts in those fields, academic sorts, government officials in the US and other countries, as well as, and perhaps most importantly from those living and working in the refugee camps around the world. She has participated in conferences, had one on one meetings with generals in the field, Secretaries of State and heads of state, and reportedly continuing communication on the issues.

Angelina has at least as much, if not more, expertise than most members of Congress have on the issue. On most of her working trips she is staffed and properly briefed beforehand. That briefing is not just a quick word to the ear either as it is for many voting members of Congress. As it also is for members of Congress, this issue is not her only focus. Only the uneducated or uninformed would dismiss the expertise she has gained from her work through the United Nations and other organizations. It is an entirely false premise that one can only gain expertise through a formal education at a university.

Perhaps most disappointing are those people who will criticize Angelina or her writings as a tool to gain attention for themselves. So far, I cannot see one reason why anyone would have a quarrel with her latest commentary in Time. And anyone who would dismiss and criticize Angelina’s op/ed pieces by discussing her personal life or celebrity status should themselves be rejected out of hand.

Personally, I love the fact that since the Oscar, Angelina has not been seen alot other than on the set, has not done something or spoken/responded to anything to do with the entertainment media. It has been Associated Press at the Hague(re: International Court) and several articles in the Times magazine.
All have nothing to do with the entertainment but her activism. Wonder if this a sign of things to come?
Jolie has more guts than countless of politicians in and outside the US. That’s why she is the most powerful celebrity in the world !
