You can think whatever you want. You can consider it wrong, but you cannot be OFFENSIVE, which is what most of people it is. You might consider it unnatural, but it’s not a sickness, is a mental condition and it is there since birth! It was probably not her choice. What I don’t understand is why you people cannot understand that those things are not chosen, they just happen. I don’t think I’m open-minded and “cool”, I’m just trying to be emphatic. To be born in a body that doesn’t feel like yours… shouldn’t be cool. Why can’t she go for her happiness? Maybe she’s doing the worst mistake of her live but who are we to judge? I saw HER on that weight loss program (sorry, can’t remember the name) and she was the sweetest. Seemed more like she had self-esteem issues and being over-weight can give one a bad self image.

I really liked her, but if she doesn’t like herself, I don’t think changing her gender is going to help that much.

Who are you to judge the life she wants to live? People make their OWN decisions. If she wants to be changed into a he then allow her to do it. And don’t go saying “If God wanted her a man then he would have built her that way.” Well apparently he did, look at her. I will never understand the attraction of same sex partners, however, I do believe that people can (and are) born with genes or hormones inside that may not be reflective of outside appearance. Since I am not professionally versed in this, I will just say that things can go wrong.
Look at the thousands of birth defects that we have every day. Look at the millions of children born with mental or physical disabilities. Look at the complexities of the body in that if ONE little thing goes wrong in the very complicated human computer in the body, it can throw off everything else —physically and emotionally.
I believe that in the majority of cases, homosexuals are born, not made, however, there are some who ‘choose’ to live that life style. Are gays mistakes? In MY OPINION, G-d made man and woman to be together, not woman and woman or man and man. However, with that said, I also believe that very odd things can happen with genes and hormones in the conception process and that some people may not be on the inside what they appear to be on the outside. Perhaps that is the case for Chastity.

Good for her to come out in these days with such harsh people for a gender change. Good for you Chaz. Be happy..

do u realize what a difficult decision this must have been for chastity? the pain and the years of surgeries? she obviously never felt comfortable in her own skin and wants to live her life the way she was meant to. stop judging others and have sympathy and respect.

i don’t understand trangenderism; it boggles my brain. why would a woman want to change her outward appearance, to ‘look’ more like a man? (or vise versa) surely, being a butch **** would satisfy her INNER self, if she has a need to ‘look’ more like a man. why does she need to FUNCTION like a man? Do they have artificial peens attached? or do they just use strap-ons? and if they DO just use strap-ons, wouldn’t being a woman without boosoms be adequate enough for them to be able to act more like a man?…even ‘feel’ more like a man?

i admit it! i’m very niave. but i just CAN’T understand, for the life of me, why somebody who has been recognised as female since she was born , and who has LOOKED like a female (albeit, increasingly ‘dykie’, since she was a young adult) all her life, and is not ‘attracted’ to men - would want to BE one. i get the ‘mixed up hormones, since birth’ thing; i even accept that some lesbians prefer to be manlike dykes, but i don’t get THIS.

having said that, i must congratulate chaz on his brave decision to do SOMETHING about his quandry. a surgical and artificial change of gender is not to be sneezed at, it’s months, years of ’sex-changing’ drugs, culminating in the very complex surgery of ‘re-allignment’ of the sex organs. i wish somebody could explain the pschycology of it, because although chaz is finally going to become his ‘true’ self, and be more at peace with himself - there are going to be a host of many ‘ordinary’ people who are totally bamboozled and perplexedby this very public, inyaface ‘coming out’.

i must do some research on the subject. i would welcome a psychco-social explanation of this really interesting phenomenon. chaz could be a great spokesperson for the transgendered people of the world, he could explain the rough road of the ‘person in the wrong body’ syndrome to us very well., educate us about the special loneliness of being locked in the wrong body. (i can see a best seller coming out of this!) it’s said that ignorance breeds fear, but the publics fears can be allayed with some simple, but informative explanation.

Things you weren’t taught at school - there’s a thing called Intersex.

Meaning a body neither wholly male, nor wholly female. And technically, one person in 60 is Intersexed in one way or another, though it might take a lab test to show that.

Obvious Intersex conditions lead to obviously ambiguous bodies, where when the child is born the docs have no idea what sex to label the child.

Not-so-obvious ones like CAH or De La Chapelle syndrome result in men with the 46xx chromosomes normally only found in women. Or CAIS or Turner syndrome women with the 46xy chromosomes normally only found in men. Or men and (rarely) women with Kleinfelter syndrome, 47xxy chromosomes. Some of the men have fathered children. Some of the women have given birth.

There’s even people with 5ARD or 17BHDD syndromes, who look female at birth, but get a “natural sex change” and masculinise later in life. Quite normal in species such as Clownfish and Groupers, rare in humans though. But yes, it happens.

Chromosomes are not a reliable guide to sex, just a really good indicator, right most of the time. Not all. Nothing magical about them.

Until recently we didn’t know just how different male and female brains were. But autopsies show distinct differences, even at the cellular level. fMRI images show that there’s large differences in the way men and women think. Not news to those who have read “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, but now we have the proof, and even know why.

Transsexuality is a form of Intersex - though until quite recently, we weren’t sure of this, and (like stomach ulcers) was originally thought to be the result of a mental illness. Now we know the Helicobacter organism is responsible for ulcers, and that Transsexuality is a congenital anomaly, like having a cleft palate.

I’m over-simplifying, but it’s caused by something going slightly wrong in the womb. The brain develops along one line, say male, the rest of the body (to a greater or lesser degree) along another line, say female.

Chaz thinks, feels, smells and hears like a man. And that’s different from the way women think, feel, smell and hear. This isn’t a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of observable fact, determinable by experiment.

As was said in an article in ArtzeZeitung, the German Physician’s Journal : “Radiologists can now confirm what transsexuals report - that they feel “trapped in the wrong body” - on the basis of the activation of the brain when presented with erotic stimuli. There is obviously a biological correlation with the subjective feelings.”

We still are not completely sure why a male-pattern brain always leads to a male gender identity. We have some good theories, but apart from observing the fact that it always does, no exceptions, this is an area we don’t know much about.

What it means though is that Chaz is a man. And was a boy when he was young, no matter what he looked like. No matter what he looks like now.

Transsexuality is hideously uncomfortable. Imagine if you woke up with a body that looked like your boyfriend? About half suicide, yes it *does* feel that bad, perverse, awful, and terribly terribly *wrong*.

Trying to cure this with psychotherapy is like trying to cure a cleft palate through psychotherapy. You may be able to make the patient more comfortable with their condition, but that’s about it, and you won’t do anything about the underlying physical cause.

God may not make mistakes, but if not, he intends some babies to be born with no eyes, or malformed hearts, or cleft palates, or transsexuality.

Just as we can cure someone with a cleft palate by surgical reconstruction - even if it’s not perfect - we can change a transsexual person’s body to match their brain. Changing the brain is beyond us, like trying to mend a computer with a flint axe. There are also ethical problems, you’d be essentially killing the old person and making a new one from the remains, just to make other people feel more comfortable about the situation.

For women, hormones don’t do much,. but surgery works well. For men, hormones work brilliantly, but the surgery is imperfect. Many guys don’t like the $120,000 price and 30% success rate. They opt for breast reduction surgery (as do men with gynacamastea), and possibly a hysterectomy and metoidaplasty. Male hormones cause things to grow, you see. Maybe as big as your thumb. Some don’t see the need, and it’s a pretty private matter that others have no right to know.

This stuff isn’t taught in high school. It’s not even taught much in med school - I know, I’ve been called on to lecture to medical and psych students on the subject. Ignorance of it is understandable.

The bigotry, the hatred, the malice and spite, the insults and invective - less so. No matter what sex or gender or shape or colour you are, work on being decent human beings first and foremost, OK?
