Angelina Jolie - World Refugee Day PSA
For this year’s World Refugee Day on June 20th, Angelina Jolie recorded a public service announcement (PSA) to draw attention to the plight of the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes because of war or persecution.
The 34-year-old UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador actress says in the PSA, “Please don’t turn away. Refugees are the most vulnerable people on earth. Every day, they are fighting to survive. They deserve our respect. Please do not forget them. Remember them on this day. World Refugee Day.”

Countries to mark World Refugee Day with a dizzying array of events

GENEVA, June 15 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency and its supporters around the world pay tribute this week to the courage and resilience of millions of people forced to flee their homes by conflict and persecution.
World Refugee Day (WRD), which falls every June 20, is also a big opportunity for the UNHCR to spread awareness about refugees and other displaced people and to raise funds for our major operations and emergencies in places like Afghanistan, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq and neighbouring countries, Pakistan and Sudan.
Headquarters and field staff have been planning for World Refugee Day for months and have prepared a wide range of activities focusing on this year’s theme of “Real People, Real Needs” and including light shows, film screenings, photography exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions, food bazaars, fashion shows, cultural performances, concerts and sports contests. There will also be quizzes, drawing and essay-writing competitions, tree planting, seminars, workshops, speeches, public awareness campaigns and poetry recitals.
UNHCR partners, including governments, donors, non-governmental organizations, Angelina Jolie and our other committed Goodwill Ambassadors will be doing their part to help, and refugees in camps and centres around the world will participate while enjoying much needed recognition.
This year, the main focus of UNHCR’s activities during WRD and the week leading up to it will be in the United States, the biggest donor to the agency. High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres will be in America all week.
Tomorrow, he will be at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. to meet journalists and present UNHCR’s “2008 Global Trends” – an eagerly waited annual compilation of statistics on the number of refugees, internally displaced people, stateless people and others of concern to the agency.
On Thursday, Guterres will attend the annual public ceremony for World Refugee Day at the National Geographic Museum in Washington. A number of high-profile guests are expected to appear with the High Commissioner, while the event will be led by CNN journalist Anderson Cooper. Participants will hear from a couple originating from Bhutan who were resettled in the United States after spending years in a refugee camp in eastern Nepal.
This showpiece event will also feature winning entries for a World Refugee Day poster contest under the patronage of Angelina Jolie, who has made a special WRD public service announcement that will be seen on the Internet as well as in airports, public transport and TV stations around the world. Elementary, middle and high school students were invited to design a poster around the “Real People, Real Needs” theme.

It’s World Refugee Day, therefore Angie usually highlights and share her stories of refugees. I don’t think she is showing off that she is doing charity. She simply wants to highlight and draw attention to it. You have to do this by getting on television or otherwise people don’t care about the refugees. We are living in a very shallow celebrity society and some people only care what the celebrities are wearing, hair, etc. At least Angie is doing something productive in society. She is better than me because I haven’t done anything productive to contribute to the world we live in. Therefore, I don’t have nothing bad to say but simply admire Angie’s devotion and dedication!

It’s not a matter of showing off. She was chosen to ber embassador for those reasons. To raise awareness you have to show your face. There is no other way. She is a compassionate person and if she did it just for play it wouldn’t be already 8 years she is working for the UHNCR. It’s since 2001. If it was a game she would be fed up. Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani and American actress Angelina Jolie, who has visited more than 20 countries since being appointed a Goodwill Ambassador in 2001, have a truly global reach. Introduction
I was asked to write an introduction to my journals, to explain how my journals came to be, why my life took this direction, and why I decided to start it.
As I try to find the answers, I am sure of one thing: I am forever changed. I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience.
I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act.
So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not?
Many nights I sat awake reading stories and statistics about national and international tragedies.
I read about UNHCR:
• More than twenty million refugees exist today.
• One-sixth of the world’s population lives on less than one dollar a day.
• 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
• One-third of the world has no electricity.
• More than 100 million children are out of school.
• One in six children in Africa dies before the age of five.
I read about different organizations that do humanitarian work. I had been reading about Sierra Leone when I was in England. When I got back to the States it was difficult to follow the stories, so I called USA for UNHCR and asked if they could help me understand the situation there and similar situations elsewhere in the world. Three weeks later I was in Sierra Leone.
I don’t know how this will be as a book, how readers will find it. I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.

Awhile back Angelina visited and spoke with misplaced refugees. The very people keeping them contained in these camps were angry that Angelina reported it. They were affraid if they released these people they’d take their jobs and invaid their homes, etc. How sad. I also admire Angelina for attending the hearing on the man behind making children go to war. So many great things she’s fighting for.
I think that Angelina is very focused in her humanitarian work. Although compassionate by nature, her causes are clear cut. She is not “all over the place” like some would like to believe. She is very specific in where she spends her valuable time and money on.
Now, there’s a real woman to be proud of. Thank you Angie! While others are taking jabs at past boyfriends and picking up fake awards, you are doing something, once again, for humanity. We love you Angie!

The dedication to her craft that garnered Angelina an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999), is reflected in her efforts for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN agency that currently assists 20 million refugees in approximately 120 countries.

I hate it when people bring up Ethan Hawke cheating on Uma Thurman. I like Uma, but she’s a case of “What goes around comes around”. Uma is a serial relationship-breaker upper just like Laura Dern. When she was fairly young - 20-ish - she cheated with Gary Oldman and ultimately was name co-respondent in his wife’s divorce papers. Olman and his wife had a kid. He later married up…and cheated on her with someone else, but that’s beside the point. LOL. Uma ain’t exactly the shining light of wronged women. The reason why Brad should not be mentioned is because Brad is not the ambassador. Although he is the partner of Angelina, Brad would look like he is coattailing Angelina’s popularity. In other words they are two individuals and it does not mean that when Angelina gets credits it’s automatically credited to Brad too. What I mean is give credit to where credit is due. Just like when you do something that needs to be appreciated we would not mention your husband/wife for that credit. Get my point? This explanation does not mean that I don’t like Brad although I must admit that before she got hook with Angie I was not his fan. It’s only after he hooked up with Angie that I began to appreciate him especially when he involved himself with the less privilege people. Even with this effort I would give credit to Angelina because she’s influential in making Brad get awareness of the under privilege.

I hear what you are saying PT, My point was that no other HW star, or wife of a HW star has whined about a relationship as much as X.
No woman has taken as much heat as Angelina has because Brad wanted out of his toxic relationship. There were no children involved to be hurt.
Maybe the average X fan is cognitively impaired? Maybe their brains have rotted from reading too many Tabs?
I don’t buy the argument that “what goes around comes around”, at least not always. In the field I work in, it is very rare that it happens, too many bad guys get away with it.
I do believe Brad was honest with X.
I do believe Brad ended it with X before he pursued Angelina.
I do believe he made a decision to get out.
He is responsible for that decision. (He had every right to make that decision, It is HIS life!)

Among members of any society they are the ones who can be overlooked, demeaned -treated as non-persons with the greatest ease and with the greatest frequency. They have no power, so No significance.

Orphans/refugee’s can & are deprived consistently of justice. This is why the poor, parentless -those who lack parental protection either through abandonment, abuse or death ect, are at the endangered
list. By definition, among all the “needy in the land” they are the littlest, the weakest, the poorest, the most desperately vulnerable. Not only must they do without food or money, they lack something more basic, the comfort, nurture and protection of family,parents. They are not only destitute physically & economically, but socially & psychologically as well.

I got that and I agree. I just think Uma’s a bad example of someone who didn’t whine. What the hell was she going to whine about when she was put in the exact same position as Gary Oldman’s first wife? The fault lies with the men because they’re ones who were married and Uma was really young at the time…but…after Oldman was invovled in other relationships with men who were either married or living with someone. Robert DeNiro just to name one. And while I don’t believe Brad cheated on X, I also think if he’d deep-sixed X in 2002 or 2003 when he had one foot out the door everything that’s been blamed on Angie would be a moot issue. The fact is - men can’t be “stolen” or tempted away from anything they’re fully committed to and invested in.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt used their star power Saturday to help The Children’s Health Fund focus attention on the more than 46,000 children still displaced 21/2 years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed their homes.
Jolie said her work as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees prompted her to get involved with the CHF’s effort.
“This is the largest displacement of children in my own country so I want to learn as much as possible,” she said at a news conference.
A report issued earlier this month by the CHF found that 46,000 to 64,000 children affected by the hurricanes were still at risk for a host of medical, mental health and educational problems complicated by a lack of support services.
“Many families are distressed about how long and difficult the recovery has been,” said Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the CHF and director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, which conducted the study.
“We’re concerned that this issue has fallen off the radar screen and that, nationally, people are losing interest, saying this is a ‘local’ issue. We dispute that. This is a national problem and one that requires an intense and focused effort to fix,” Redlener said.
Redlener said it was “unacceptable” that more than two years families were still living in federally issued travel trailers or other temporary locations. “This is an American challenge that should have been met a long time ago but hasn’t.”
Jolie said that in her travels she has seen many children who feel defeated.
The difference here, she said, is that children “are feisty, fun and full of pride. They know where they’re going and what they’re going to do. It’s that kind of spirit that will help everyone get through this.”
Pitt and Jolie have made New Orleans their home since the hurricanes and have been working to help the area recover.
“We’re focused on community building,” Pitt said. “It’s not just about homes. It’s not just about building. It’s about the lack of focus on education and health care too.”
Pitt has pledged more than $5 million to Make it Right, a project to rebuild 150 homes in the Katrina-devastated Lower 9th Ward, one of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods.
Redlener said his group and the Regional Consortium for Children in the Gulf, a coalition of several groups, have devised a “prescription for what must happen now,” with proposals including:
· Urging the Federal Emergency Management Agency to develop a process that ensures that every relocated family goes into appropriate housing in safe neighborhoods with access to schools, community based sources of social support and health care.
· Urging federal and local officials to ensure access to onsite health care and mental health services for families still living in temporary housing.
· Creating relocation options for families who want to leave the Gulf Coast and move to other communities.

At the time I thought there was something strange about her mother’s passing away, but I couldn’t remember what it was. Well…I finally found it and now I’m ROTFLMAO at her HuffPo antics.

I respect your beliefs, PT. Really I do. Karma and “what goes around comes around” is not part of my belief structure. It is great when it happens ….sure. I think it is more of a coincidence than anything else.
Sometimes bad things happen to good people for no reason, random acts that have no meaning. No “cosmic retaliation” that has been deemed necesary for a true victim. Because I have worked with abused and neglected children, children who have suffered things adults cannot imagine suffering for so long. I do not follow that there is a “karmic payback”.
Infanticide? Babies used as punching bags? Little children sexually abused and violently raped? What possible cyclical reason could there be for this? None that I can see.
Once in a while, it does seems as if something happens to a perp for a reason, but more often than not it is merely a result of the choices they make rather than devine intervention or a fact of life.
That is my opinion. Doesn’t mean that it has to be everyone’s.

“What goes around comes around” and “Karma” are not theories I subscribe to.
They are not facts of life, Merely philosophies we would all like to believe, because it makes sense out barbaric acts that have no meaning. Occasionally it appears that devine intervention lead to some type of retribution, but more often that not victims are left picking up the pieces of their shattered lifes.
I am not talking about the “X victimology” (which THROUGH HER CHOICE was utilized as a career move), rather the victims I work with, abused and neglected kids, grief groups and victims of violent crimes.
To invoke Karma is to imply that they have done something to deserve unspeakable things that have happend to them. I do not buy it.
some people, through bad choices and/or bad actions continually set themselves up to be victims. with others, they are random victims, in the wrong place at the wrong time.

By helping the refugees, AJ is also giving them hope, something that they might thought was / is impossible..

You will probably see it on CNN Thursday. It is a PSA, so the tv channels decide whether they want to show it. Since it is not a money making advertisement, a PSA does not get much air time. I saw last year’s PSA on CNN.

Your reasoning is unbelievable and impossible. Angelina’s father does not have anything to do with Angelina’s decision to adopt children from third world countries. Her decision to adopt came from her desire to mother these children and to save them from possible death. If she used her father to be the reason why she adopts, it’s impossible that she could love these children like her own. Adopting kids is not a joke, it does not only involve money but more it involves love and protection. Ask any parent who had adopted kids, 100% they will tell you that they love the adopted children equally with their bio kids. My parents had an adopted child and believe it or not they treated and love her like she came from the bodies. So your allegation is precisely wrong.

I really blame the press for whatever negativity is expressed towards Angie. For example, Angie was the first to wear the thigh high slit, immediately People mag opened a poll about her dress followed by ther websites. Since she wore the dress, it has become a trend amongst starlets during the summer. Have you noticed no such poll has been opened for others like Megan, instead they rave only about how sexy the others are. It is as if the press wants Angelina to be judged by the world everytime. I also noticed People mag did not put up anything about Brad and Angie and the Pitt family donations to cancer, which is a positive story. I wonder why?
I also happen to catch the end of JA special yesterday, they completely made it like Angie stole Brad. They forgot to quote Brad saying that he spilt with Jen before they finished shooting Mr and Mrs Smith. Everything they accused him of happened after they legally separated. They even told John Mayer’s side of the story when he split with Jen but they never gave Brad’s side of the story. So yeah, I blame the press for all these nonsense.

Doesn’t Angelina Jolie realize that the rent on that NY estate could feed a refugee camp for a year? How can she personally see these things and only give 25% of her income? Most of our families give 20% to charrity! I realize she isn’t married but their combined muti-house hold income is 200 million a year! Can’t you survive on say on say 5 million a year for crying out loud. If Brad and his girlfriend gave 150 million it would then be news worthy. Why did she have to show her face anyway?
