Angelina Jolie: World Refugee Day Commemoration
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie joins the commemoration of World Refugee Day at the National Geographic Society on Thursday (June 18) in Washington, D.C.
According to UNHCR, this year’s theme for World Refugee Day on June 20 is “Real People, Real Needs.” Of the millions of people forcibly displaced by conflict, persecution and natural disasters, every one has a story to tell; they are real people, just like you and me, and they have real needs. But, despite the best efforts of UNHCR and many others, many of these basic needs are far from being met.

she’s doing what she loves, and is surrounded by people who are worthy. Nice of her to be there and conmemorate people that really need help. It was very nice seeing her when giving the prizes to the kids. Only bad hing was the reporter filling in, whats her name? Ann Curry? her voice was a whisper, and too modulated, it seemed like she was telling a secret, not conducting this type of event.

To the haters - stop worry about Angie’s look. I wish I look like this anyday. The refugees is an important issue and the only thing you can talk about is her look. Get some substance in your life and stop smoking because your little brain is too limited to understand that there is more to life than being so bitter and ugly! Speaking of look, your hair mop idol wish she can look like this because Angie is on every beautiful and sexy lists out there, even though she doesn’t care about it and plus she doesn’t have to pose naked on covers to say that she is sexy. Physical beauty fades in everyone. But not everyone has wisdom and inner beauty. Those are treasures that only grow better with time.

Standing ovations underscored an emotional ceremony Thursday marking World Refugee Day - with some of them led by Angelina Jolie. The star, along with the rest of the audience, was visibly as they heard firsthand stories from refugees who have been relocated to the United States. They were also able to cheer, via Internet camera, along with students from a school in a Chad refugee camp.
Due to unexpected circumstances, some expected guests were not able to make the Washington, D.C., event. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had broken her elbow in an accident, while scheduled host Anderson Cooper suffered flight problems, leaving Ann Curry to fill in.
Jolie, obviously choked up with emotion, said of the refugees, “Most of all they are survivors … They are the most impressive people I have ever met.”
Tales of Survival
Recalling a 2001 trip for the United Nations Refugee Agency to Afghanistan, during which she talked with an expectant mother of two, Jolie recalled, “Before we said goodbye to the pregnant lady, she pointed to her young boy with such a sad look and she said, ‘He’s always asking for more food, and it hurts me to say, “We have none.” ‘ A few weeks later the war in Afghanistan began.”
Later in the hour-plus program, Jolie and the rest of the audience sat captivated as honoree Rose Mapendo, a single mother held captive in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 16 months during that country’s civil war, recounted being forced to witness the torture and execution of her husband, and giving birth to twin sons on the cement floor of her cell.
After the presentation, Mapendo, Jolie and the head of the U.N. Refugee Agency, Antonio Guterres, joined other American and international dignitaries for lunch. Thursday evening, all three will reunite for a gala celebration for UNHCR - before Jolie and her children leave D.C. to head back to Los Angeles, where Brad Pitt is filming Moneyball.

So unfair. So unjust. She is a strong woman, and I have great respect for her for all that she does for the refugees.
I think this is such an admirable cause that Angelina Jolie is standing up for. I can’t imagine the horrid conditions these people are condemned to live in and yet this woman has been in the middle of it to understand it.. She has seen it all in person and thats incredible to me. Obviously Angelina Jolie is so much more than just a movie star. Her passion makes her beautiful inside and out. People who are against her are just jealous that they do not have that kind of passion that real living brings.

@the real lou: that’s what I always say. The difference is they don’t hate those women like they hate Angelina so they don’t call them out on their wrinkles or aging. Jennifer Garner is another one that doesn’t get the crap . she’s only 1 or 2 years older than Jolie but in close ups you can see the wrinkles setting in. Brad Pitt too. there’s lots of times where he looks a good ten years older than his age but he’ll never get the hatefulness that Angelina Jolie gets. Period. Angelina fans just have to roll with the punches Angelina has to take for “stealing” Brad Pitt.

Because she is.
There are a lot of people who went to college and study politics and never saw a war-torn country. They study only in theory. Angelina saw before her very eyes the result of the miscalculations of these college grads political strategists. She learns politics on the field.
College is not the only place to learn. Joschka Fischer, was a famous foreign minister of Germany. He didn’t even finish “Gymnasium - a german high school leading to university entrance” let alone have a university degree. He learned politics through protest on the streets and demos; he helped found the Green political party. Yet, as his term as foreign minister ended, he was offered to teach “International Relations” in Princeton.
Angelina knows more about world affairs than some top politicians who haven’t been beyond the US borders.

Angelina is an ambassador for the UN High Commission on Refugees. Her interested started when she was filming in Cambodia 8 years ago.
This is her cause. There are very few refugees in the US compared with the rest of the world because of our immigration laws and restrictions.\
Just because a person is a US citizen doesn’t mean they should narrow their focus and efforts to only US children. Some folks want to be WORLD citizens instead of just citizens of their own little corner.
If someone like Angelina and the other UNHCR ambassadors (which currently includes Armani and others from other countries)don’t speak up, then who will? YOU? I don’t think so. Poverty and hunger and homelessness are global issues that need to be addressed by all not just US addressing US poverty.
It’s a shame she is really starting to show her age. I’m sorry not “her” age which is 34 but is beginning to look like she is in her early 40’s. That’s too bad.

Jolie’s near decade long commitment to the plight of the refugee forced from their home is admirable. It is all too easy to turn your back on these silent people. Thank goodness they have found a voice in someone so articulate and seriously dedicated to this work. So many celebrities are just dillitantes when it comes to their “charity.” That is obviously not the case with Jolie who has actually made her humanitarian work her second career and worked hard to gain respect and much needed assistance for these people.

Love her, beautiful inside and out. She is so beautiful in the youtube video when she talks, she is elegant. Truly admire her, she has kind, sensitive eyes and you can tell that this subject means so much more to her, she doesn’t just prance around in tight jeans, selling peace tshirts and a social event, she walks the walk. The people who really hate her, I’m convinced they work for the X’s camp, because how can you possibly hate someone who works and gives so much for the unfortunate of the world? Even a couple of my friends who aren’t fans of her are like “she does a lot of good, like her for that, she works hard for UN causes”, at least they are big enough to admit that.
That said, I can so see why Brad loves her, she’s the whole package.
The full compassion she has for the refugees is so profound.
I deeply respect her commiment to the survivals.
She is a woman of substance. And yes she is educated. She attended New York University studying film and drama. She is more intelligent than anyone who has a Ph D. A person’s worth is not only measured by a bachelor’s or Master’s or Associate in Art’s for that matter. Look at all she had accomplished. Brad too has accomplished so much even if he was 2 units away from a journalism degree in Missouri. I commend these couple especially Angie. This is the reason why the tab writers feature her and put her down since good news will not sell. This is why Brad put loves and adores this woman hands down.

A broken elbow kept Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from attending, a “bad hair day” was the joke about why emcee Anderson Cooper was replaced last minute by NBC’s Ann Curry, but we bet it didn’t matter to most in attendance at the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) event Thursday – the clear star of the panel was actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie.
Jolie, who has been working on helping displaced refugees since 2001, moved the crowd with her emotional speech at the National Geographic Museum in honor of World Refugee Day, serving as a model for other celeb-activists
“I am here today to talk about millions of desperate families, families so far out from civilization they don’t even know a day like this exists on their behalf,” she began her speech which she used as a chance to illustrate the real people behind the statistics.
The slim actress dressed head-to-toe in black looked as stunning in person as she does behind the camera, but it was easy to see her more the humanitarian on one of her 30 missions to Africa than the starlet and wife of Brad Pitt while she spoke with deep emotion (even tearing-up) while recalling her times with the “most impressive people” she has ever met.

A pregnant Afghani woman “taught [her] how to be a mother”…a little girl that survived in the jungle for two weeks with her brother “taught [her] how to be brave”… and a paralyzed boy victim to a gunshot wound in the back “taught [her] the strength of an unbreakable spirit.”–lessons she no doubt uses on her six young children, two of whom (Maddox and Pax) arrived with her last night and checked into the Hay Adams Hotel.
Jolie later cried listening to Humanitarian of the Year Award winner Rose Mapendo speak about her time in a Congolese prison (who admit to not knowing who Jolie was before meeting her that day, which broke the sadness in the room for a moment) and smiled and hugged the three student winners of the World Refugee Day Poster Contest.

ROTFLMAO. Speaking as someone who works at a large university I can honestly say that a huge number of people with advanced degrees - Masters, PhDs, MDs, JDs, etc…are dumber than a box of rocks. These people are dialed into their little area of expertise and are otherwise clueless. I once worked for a department chair, the man had multiple PhDs…refused to use a computer because he said it was “stupid” and didn’t do things the way he wanted it to do. Does that sound intelligent to you? He couldn’t figure out the software…so there was something wrong with the computer…NOT HIM. He made his secretary read and respond to his e-mail…hell, his snailmail, too. And I’m talking private, confidential “For your eyes only” mail. It’s not like he’s not intelligent and, ahem, EDUCATED, but he was a complete idiot when it came to the computer. Ergo…it ain’t all about the education and the amount of time you spent in school and the number of degrees you possess. Stupidity comes in all forms. You, for instance, are a perfect example of that.

She has a huge heart and gives so much of herself to others who have and come from nothing. How can you hate on that?????? I like my celebs with more brains and interests than just acting or the ones who spend all their free time clubbing in LA or tanning and hanging with friends, they have no substance. And no I don’t believe a celeb should “give quietly”,what hogwash, celebs have the platform to make a difference, they should do all they can to make a difference to their causes and encourage others to give (as Americans love to follow celebs), if a celeb puts their name behind a charity, they should promote it, it’ s not showing off, it’s showing by example. Please to always “give quietly” is just another way of saying it’s a tax break for them, they wrote the cheque and filed it with their accountant, claimed it on their taxes and flew back to Mexico to get yet another orange tan.

Thanks for all the great pixs, articles and videos. AJ is a beautiful woman, inside and out. AJ radiates with purpose and sincerity while shining a spotlight on Refugees world-wide. The program was very touching and inspiring. When I see what so many people have gone through and suffered, yet maintain such dignity and spirit, I am in awe and truly humbled.

Can somebody please explain to me what’s so terrible about Angie’s past. I just don’t understand it. I’m a fan for a very long time and know of her past, but don’t see anything that justifies that hatred. What terrible things did she do, that her past has to be brought up to justify the hate for a person that is giving, compassionate, loving, strong, intelligent and kind.
I just don’t get it. Maybe being exposed to all that negativity just numbed my brain.

You know what the main problem is? Angie didn’t lie about her past, try to hide it, apologize for it or express regrets over any of it. THAT’s what really chaps these losers asses. Angie lives her life on her terms and answers to no one. I would actually respect that because it’s honest. It means you are here on this site and others trashing AJ because you feel somehow that she wronged someone and you must tell the world how even if she cures cancer, Angelina still did a reprehensible thing and must be punished for it. I get that. It would explain all the ludicrous arguments and at least give credence to “forgive, but not forget”. However what I read continuously is very personal, bitter vitriol based on no real evidence, just conjecture. It’s easy to believe that Angie only does good things to hide her past if you forget that she started her work with the UNHCR long before Brad or Jennifer ever entered her life or that she went to Cambodia a full year and change before she even adopted Maddox. This is a human being who went and saw the horrors of our world and had it significantly change her. She’s been heavily involved ever since. So please stop pretending that you would hate her regardless of her relationship with BP. To: LEONI post #95. I worked for a UN agency and have many friends at UNHCR. Those who’ve met Angelina in the field have raved at how kind, interested and informed she is. She is one of the few UN ambassadors who pays for ALL her own expenses when on a field mission (incl. transportation) and she really engages with the refugees, UN staff and NGO partners in the field. She is absolutely down-to-earth. She makes no demands on anyone. She asks intelligent questions and absolutely does followup once she leaves a field site. As for her work in NOLA, I’ve never read an interview where she claimed to participate in any “charity” work there in addition to the substantional monetary contributions she has made.

The hatred directed at Angelina comes from narrow-minded bigoted people. Angie is beautiful but has an exotic look from certain angles, plus she adopted Asian and an African child. Unfortunately there are people who dislike her for those reasons. And they will find fault with everything she does and everything about her. But there are more people out here who are not blinded by hate and see Angelinga for the good, kind-hearted person she is.
Angie’s past is probably less wild than many, many other celebrities. But look at all she has done since 2000. None of these things she had to do to get good PR. Angie had a solid fan base since the late ’90’s. She had nothing to prove or hid. She does humanitarian deeds because she wants to be of service. She gets PR just by herself. She could stay in Hollywood and get all the PR she wants. But she extends herself because she wants to help others. That is very obvious and takes hard work, big heart, courage, commitment, sacrifice and a non-lazy person. If someone refuses to see this obvious fact, then that person is filled with hatred and prejudice. If someone keeps throwing out the Brad divorce as to why they hate Angelina, again they are really being ruled by their hatred for people who do not look like them.

Can somebody please explain to me what’s so terrible about Angie’s past. I just don’t understand it. I’m a fan for a very long time and know of her past, but don’t see anything that justifies that hatred. What terrible things did she do, that her past has to be brought up to justify the hate for a person that is giving, compassionate, loving, strong, intelligent and kind.
I just don’t get it. Maybe being exposed to all that negativity just numbed my brain.

You are right. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I partied hard and enjoyed my youth. Yet I also worked hard, and I matured and grew up and my priorities changed. I’m not ashamed for what I did in the past. It made me the person I am. My so called wild period lasted a lot longer than Angie’s. A whole 10 years and looking back, I don’t want to miss anything. I have no regrets. I guess that puts me in the same category as Angie and that makes me very proud as a matter of fact. I’m very proud being a fan of Angie.

Standing ovations underscored an emotional ceremony Thursday marking World Refugee Day – with some of them led by Angelina Jolie. The star, along with the rest of the audience, was visibly moved as they heard firsthand stories from refugees who have been relocated to the United States. They were also able to cheer, via Internet camera, along with students from a school in a Chad refugee camp.
Due to unexpected circumstances, some expected guests were not able to make the Washington, D.C., event. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had broken her elbow in an accident, while scheduled host Anderson Cooper suffered flight problems, leaving Ann Curry to fill in.
Jolie, obviously choked up with emotion, said of the refugees, “Most of all they are survivors … They are the most impressive people I have ever met.”
Tales of Survival
Recalling a 2001 trip for the United Nations Refugee Agency to Afghanistan, during which she talked with an expectant mother of two, Jolie recalled, “Before we said goodbye to the pregnant lady, she pointed to her young boy with such a sad look and she said, ‘He’s always asking for more food, and it hurts me to say, “We have none.” ‘ A few weeks later the war in Afghanistan began.”
Later in the hour-plus program, Jolie and the rest of the audience sat captivated as honoree Rose Mapendo, a single mother held captive in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 16 months during that country’s civil war, recounted being forced to witness the torture and execution of her husband, and giving birth to twin sons on the cement floor of her cell.
**After the presentation, Mapendo, Jolie and the head of the U.N. Refugee Agency, Antonio Guterres, joined other American and international dignitaries for lunch. Thursday evening, all three will reunite for a gala celebration for UNHCR – before Jolie and her children leave D.C. to head back to Los Angeles, where Brad Pitt is filming Moneyball.

A U.N. goodwill ambassador, Jolie was in Washington to observe World Refugee Day, an annual event that falls on Saturday this year. The poignant ceremony was sponsored by the United Nations refugee agency.
Tears flowed as refugees and displaced people shared their harrowing experiences and advocates related what they’d seen in refugee camps.
“I believe we must persuade the world that refugees must not be simply viewed as a burden,” she said. “They are the survivors. And they can bring those qualities to the service of their communities and the countries that shelter them.”
Jolie spoke of her visits to refugee camps in Tanzania and Pakistan.
She met a boy about 15 years old in a Tanzanian refugee camp who, without a wheelchair, had to crawl since a shot in the back paralyzed him. His family was killed, leaving him as an orphan. Yet when he spoke with her, he did it with a smile.
“He had this really remarkable, unbreakable spirit,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper after the event at the National Geographic Museum.
“I think of him and I can’t complain about anything … he was grateful and he had nothing and suffered everything.”
The boy died a few months after she met him, Jolie said.
According to a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees survey of displacement trends in 2008, there are 42 million uprooted people — 15.2 million were refugees, 26 million were internally displaced people and 827,000 were asylum seekers.
Afghans and Iraqis constituted almost half of all refugees worldwide. One out of four refugees was from Afghanistan, and 69 countries accepted Afghan refugees for asylum, agency officials found.
Jolie recounted her meeting with a pregnant Afghan refugee.
She lived in a small, roofless dirt house in an abandoned refugee camp in Pakistan and could not leave with the others because she was too far along in her pregnancy.
Pakistan struggles with the largest refugee population in the world, about 1.8 million, according to the United Nations. The country also has more than 2 million internally displaced citizens, largely because of the fighting between the Pakistani military and the Taliban since April.
Antonio Guterres, head of the U.N.’s refugee agency, elaborated on the plight of displaced people at the event.
He said internally displaced people “face the same plight [as refugees]. They have lost the same as refugees. They don’t have the same international protections granted to refugees.”
Conflicts like those in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Somalia have caused more people to flee their homes, though the number of displaced people declined by about 700,000 in 2008, the report said.
Recent fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Somalia last year brought total displacement in each to 1.5 million and 1.3 million, respectively. More than 2 million internally displaced people were in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to the report.
When a genocide targeting Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994 later spilled over into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rose Mapendo, a Tutsi, was caught in the middle. She spoke at the event and described her ordeal.
Mapendo, her husband and seven children were thrown into a death camp, where her husband was executed and her children starved, she said through tears.
While at the prison, she learned that she was pregnant. She gave birth in silence, on a concrete floor, Mapendo said. To her surprise, she had twins, and to her captors’ surprise, she named her newborns after them. Soon after her gesture toward the prison commanders, her family was freed after their 16-month ordeal.
Mapendo, named a CNN Hero in October, created Mapendo International, a nonprofit dedicated to identifying, saving and resettling endangered refugees. She was named humanitarian of the year at the event by the U.N. agency.
“I want to encourage the refugees don’t give up,” she said. Giving up “is not an option.”

Angelina is lovely. There are few women celebs who I would love to sit down and have tea, a glass a wine, brunch, etc. with. She just embodies for me what a female film star should be. Enough class to be tasteful, but enough history and past to make her interesting. Sexy without being obnoxious. Classy without being stuffy. Sincere and earnest in her endeavors. Just pretty cool all around.

Jolie lauds Boston refugee group’s work
Actress and refugee activist Angelina Jolie was among those in Washington today who honored a Congolese refugee, Rose Mapendo — and the Cambridge organization she works with.
The emotion-filled event at the National Geographic Society headquarters this morning featured the presentation to Mapendo of the “humanitarian of the year” award from the US office of the United Nations refugee agency.
I wrote a story in the Globe today about Rose Mapendo and her extraordinary story of suffering and survival, and finally of escape, from the genocidal war in the Democratic Republic of Congo in February 2000.
Mapendo’s escape occurred thanks to Sasha Chanoff, the Marlborough, Mass., native who traveled to Kinshasa to handle the rescue of 113 Tutsi refugees who faced persecution and death in the Congo. Chanoff and his rescue team colleagues, from the International Organization for Migration, squeezed Mapendo and her nine hungry children aboard the last rescue flight.
Chanoff founded Mapendo International in 2005 to facilitate more rescues from Africa. Supported by Rose Mapendo and many others, Chanoff’s group has rescued more than 4,600 refugees so far.
To a packed audience of 400 at the ceremony today, Rose Mapendo told her own story and told of her work with Chanoff in Mapendo International on behalf of many like her.

The ceremony comes two days before World Refugee Day. The UN agency, formally called the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, reported this week that there are 42 million people uprooted worldwide. that includes 16 million refugees and asylum seekers, and another 26 million internally displaced people in countries torn by war and conflict.

Global campaign to mark Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi spent her 64th birthday locked in prison Friday as global campaigns demanding her freedom erupted across Twitter, Facebook and other Web sites and at rallies worldwide.
Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, celebrities Madonna and David Beckham, Nobel laureates and world leaders joined voices to call for the military government to release Suu Kyi, who has now spent 14 birthdays in detention.
Many posted online messages on social networking sites and videos on YouTube in what human rights groups called an unprecedented and enormously powerful tool to harness support for Suu Kyi and highlight her struggle.
Suu Kyi planned to mark the day by sharing food with her prison guards.
“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will celebrate her birthday by treating the people around her to rice and chocolate cake,” said lawyer Nyan Win, who planned to bring her the food and birthday cards Friday. He said lawyers have informed her of the worldwide campaign. “Daw” is a term of respect in Myanmar.
“She really appreciates the efforts and said she was sorry she wasn’t able to thank everyone individually,” he said.
Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the last 19 years in detention, mostly under house arrest. Her situation changed dramatically last month after an uninvited American man swam to her tightly guarded lakeside home and stayed two days.
Suu Kyi was arrested May 14 and placed in a “guest house” at Myanmar’s notorious Insein Prison, where she is now on trial for violating the terms of her house arrest. The ruling junta is expected to deliver a guilty verdict, which could put the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in prison for up to five years.
“We must not stand by as she is silenced again. Now is the time for the international community to speak with one voice,” says part of a 64-word message on the new Web site http://64forsuu.org that was signed by dozens of dignitaries and celebrities. Among them: George Clooney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert DeNiro, Nicole Kidman; director Steven Spielberg and fellow Nobel Peace laureates Elie Wiesel and Desmond Tutu.
The Web site is the online hub for a campaign — “64 words for Aung San Suu Kyi” — that was organized by a coalition of human rights groups including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Burma Campaign UK and Not On Our Watch, a charity founded by Clooney, Pitt and other actors.
The site is blocked in Myanmar, where the junta typically bans politically sensitive Web sites, but is being avidly read by Net-savvy citizens who use proxy Internet servers to get around censorship.
For the first time, Suu Kyi campaigners have teamed up with Twitter.
“So, if you tweet on Suu Kyi it’s automatically integrated on the site,” said Mark Farmaner, director of the Burma Campaign UK. “Sites like Facebook and Twitter enable us to reach millions of people.”
More than 10,000 postings have poured onto the site, which was launched May 27 and allows anyone to upload video, text, image or tweets of support for Suu Kyi . It lists locations of concerts, candlelight vigils, protests and forums on Suu Kyi that started Thursday and run through Saturday in more than 20 cities worldwide, including Bangkok, Dublin, London, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo and New York.
A Facebook page set up for Suu Kyi has attracted some 93,000 supporters, up from 40,000 in mid-May. Messages posted from around the world call Suu Kyi an “icon,” “a hero,” “an inspiration” and wish her “Happy Birthday!” in a variety of languages. Many replaced their profile photos with one of Suu Kyi.
YouTube videos uploaded to the site include 64-word messages from billionaire Richard Branson and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
“For too long, the world has failed to act in the face of this intolerable injustice,” Brown says in his video. “We must do all we can to make this birthday the last you spend without your freedom.”

Well Camille, that’s for your husband to decide. I think she looks good. Not as great as she does on the red carpet, but well, I’ma go out on a limb here and say the time and the place wasn’t right for all the glitz and the glamour. She’s not Lara Croft anymore. She hasn’t been for some time. She won’t ever be again. She has 6 kids, works, and travels a lot. I will admit that there is wear and tear, but damn if she isn’t doing it justice. Give Angie a week of vay-kay and she’ll be just fine. Although I’m biased and ADMITTEDLY so. I think she’s look beautiful in these photos. Understated, low key, and classy.
Ms. Jolie’s speech was very emotional. I could hear the empathy in her words. I could see the sympathy on her face. This is the person she has become–I believe that everything you go through in life helps you to become who you are truely ment to be. I would bet that she would not change a thing because she has become the person she always felt she should have been. Jolie, Pitt give $1 million for Pakistan refugees
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated $1 million to a U.N. refugee agency to help Pakistanis displaced by fighting between troops and Taliban militants, the agency said on Thursday.
Jolie, the star of 2008 movies “Changeling” and “Wanted,” has visited Pakistan three times to witness United Nations relief operations since becoming a “goodwill ambassador” for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001.
The agency said it was grateful for the donation from Pitt and Jolie, and added that more than 2 million people in Pakistan had been uprooted this year as a result of the conflict in the northwest part of the country.
Most Pakistanis forced from their homes are living in government buildings or with host families, but 260,000 of them are in camps run by UNHCR, the agency said

Someone is really boiling therefore can’t contain her hatred for Jolie. Why are people so obsessed abt the private life of the Jolie-Pitts. The issue here is the refugees.
In good USA, people hook up today and separate next day. No big deal. So, is it important if this two are together or break-up. It is their own private business, nothing to do with others. How they live their life and how they take care of their life is their decision.
I admire AJ for being herself, and helping others. She know how to dress based on the event. She dressed up for RC event and dress down for serious event like this.
From following this blog the last few years, most of the nastiness is because of Brad pItt. Does she deserve to be called a home wrecker. Did she wreck the perfect home. If the accomplished directors, actors and the president of the UNHCR himself can overlook Ms. Jolie’s past and cast her in starring roles, or as a UN ambassador, then who are we, as bloggers to disagree? The main point is, Ms. Jolie does amazing work bringing the world’s attention to those who would otherwise remain overlooked. She also happens to be a mother of six, an actress, and partner to one of the world’s most famous men. I, for one would not blame her for looking “worn-out” or tired in ANY of her appearances. Hell, I’m a stay-at-home mom of two and don’t look anything like her even on my best days. And on those occasions when I’m helping others, I could give a rat’s ass what I look like, it’s more about who you’re helping and how, rather than what I look like. Kudos to Ms. Jolie, and to all of those who are raising awareness to the plight of the world’s refugees.

I’m watching A. Cooper 360 right now and Angie is so articulate. She speaks with so much substance and clarity. She is so well grounded and level headed because she learns so much from the refugees. I just watched Angie with Anderson Cooper, and what a wonderful, gracious, smart, and beautiful woman she is. The woman knows what she is talking about, and is very passionate about her work with the UNHCR. Brad must be soo proud of his woman. And with Brad and Angie as parents, you know their kids are going to grow up to be amazing and caring adults.

I read her book Notes from my Travels a couple years ago. I really would love for her to publish more of her journals. These are books I can read over and over again. I also enjoy watching the productions she is involved in. I loved watching The Diary Of Angelina Jolie & Dr. Jeffrey Sachs in Africa and A Place in Time. I hope she will produce more of these documentaries in the future.
AJ is a very expressive person. She is not botoxed to thegill and therefore you will see a wide range of emotions on her face, from laughter, tears and compassion. Photos do not tell the whole story and can be easily manipulated. Many blogs and Pap sites pick the worst pixs for their own agendas.

She did look younger and so sweet. I really think she is a wonderful woman and I loved the way she handled the interview. One thing I am so proud of she didn’t mention PITT by name and I can’t tell you how proud I was of that. She gives him too much praise and always speaks well of him. Then when he is interviewed he acts like he has amnesia or something when he is asked about her. ALL I can say is that he is JEALOUS of her. I don’t want to hear all of the BS about me not liking him get over it. When he stops acting like a D!!k I may change my ming. He is old and knows she is younger and hot and more popular and psycologcially I don’t think he can handle it. He didn’t have that problem with JA or anybody else because he was the spotlight.

Did you guys just see that story on AC360 about the marijuana “grow houses” in Miami? It was people growing marijuana in their house to sell and the reporter was saying they were obviously part of a mob. Well, 4 months ago, right here in my little burg there were 2 guys busted for running “grow houses” out of their homes. The two guys didn’t know each other. What’s hilarious One guy was growing and his business was booming…so he decided he needed a larger house so he could grow more plants. So he sold his house. The guy who bought the house measured it and noticed that the square footage INSIDE was less than the outside. Eventually he realized there must be a false wall somewhere - possibly a security feature for valuables. So he starts tapping on the walls until he finds one that doesn’t sound like the rest and he could hear an echo reverberating on the other side. So he uses a bansaw and cuts through the drywall. On the other side he found a 12X8 room…full of marijuana plants. The previous owner couldn’t figure out how to get all his plants out of the house without being seen…so he left his operation behind.

Now here’s the thing - if you found a hidden marijuana operation in your new house…would you call the cops and report it? Not this guy. He decided to take over the operation - unbeknownst to the guy who sold him the house. But wait - the new old owner moved to a house just down the street. So now you’ve got two guys on the same block running grow houses. The second guy starts infringing on the first guy’s territory. He was underselling the guy because he hadn’t had to buy the planets and hydroponics, etc., that the first guy had bought not once…but twice!

So…Guess what the first guy did? Yeah…he called the cops with “anonymous” tip about the second guy’s grow house. The idiot called from his cell phone. NOT a throw away phone like TracFone…but one of the carriers that sell plans. With the tip, they put Guy #2 under servaillance - observed all the people going in and out of his house, planted an undercover cop and busted Guy #2 with a string operation. Now they need to make their case stick, so they’ve got to find their anonymous tipper. The police log the number of all incoming calls. They go back and find the number from the tipper…get the owner’s name from the cell phone company - and find out it’s a guy they’ve been watching for a long time…and that he used to live in Guy #2’s house!

Needless to say…the wheels came off Guy #1’s wagon because Guy #2, who had initially clammed up, decided to start talking. Come to find out…GUY #2 WAS A LAWYER! I’m sitting at work reading this story on my local newspaper’s website and were were laughing our asses off. What a moron. So now Guy #2 is waiting trial and has been disbarred. Guy #1 was what I like to call a “professional student”. He’s like 33 or 34 and STILL in “graduate school”. Basically…he was staying in school because it was easy to find buyers for his pot operation. At work we were tempted to nominate Guy #1 for the Darwin Awards…

If I had money, I would do what she does and help underprivileged children all over the world. I keep dreaming I will the lottery just to do that. Go Angie you are so great and wonderful human being.
I can’t help but mesmerize by the beauty and brains of the Jolie.

Basically what I’m got out of this is that you let the opinions of others sway your own opinion. Weenie. Your first mistake was going to Popsugar - a known anti-Angie enclave. Your second mistake was reading the comments. Your third mistake was in thinking we’d care that you’re easily swayed by the actions of others. If you have a problem with Brad or Angie being with Brad, then have it because of his actions, not because of how some nitwits veiw Angie because she’s with Brad.

God. Some people just kill me. Some days I’m not real thrilled with Brad myself, but it has nothing to do with some crack-smoking slags on Popsugar, IUC, FF or anywhere else. It’s got a little something to do with the fact that he was dumb enough to marry X when everthing inside of hiim said, “Don’t do this, dude!”
Australian research helping Angelina Jolie’s work in Cambodia

AUSTRALIAN researchers are helping Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie improve the lot of Cambodia’s farmers.
Work is underway to expand an SMS-based information network developed by the University of Canberra, which provides market updates to ensure remote Cambodian farmers get a fair price for their produce.
While these farmers live in areas which often lack basic infrastructure, Cambodia does have 85 per cent mobile coverage and text messages cost as little as US3 cents.
“We wanted to help farmers access the price of maize or soybeans on demand, so they were in a stronger position to negotiate the sale of their crop,” says Dr Robert Fitzgerald.
“Some traders and farmers knew some price information but that was not always shared, so the only way the farmer could find out about the price was to travel to town or ask nearby friends.
“Now farmers can text the agricultural information server and straight away find out about the prices.”
Working with the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation (MJP) - named after the Hollywood couple’s adopted son from Cambodia - the scheme will be expanded on a trial basis to also offer health and pest warnings and other important information.
Only Zimbabwe and South Africa had higher rates of tuburculosis infection than Cambodia in 2007.
“We need, therefore, to find effective tools to quickly disseminate information to isolated and rural communities,” says Stephan Bognar, Executive Director of MJP.
The project, also with involvement from the University of New England, is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
The celebrity couple have also donated $1 million to a UN refugee agency to help Pakistanis displaced by fighting between troops and Taliban militants.
Jolie, the star of 2008 movies Changeling and Wanted, has visited Pakistan three times to witness United Nations relief operations since becoming a “goodwill ambassador” for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001.
The agency said it was grateful for the donation from Pitt and Jolie, and added that more than 2 million people in Pakistan had been uprooted this year as a result of the conflict in the northwest part of the country.
Most Pakistanis forced from their homes are living in government buildings or with host families, but 260,000 of them are in camps run by UNHCR, the agency said.
The Hollywood couple, who gave the $1 million through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, donated $2 million in September to help children in Ethiopia stricken by disease.

I love this woman. Hate her father though. I’m glad that she said she wasn’t “political.” Perhaps that would help her to distance herself from her crazy dad’s comments attacking President Obama last week.
I was kind of disappointed that Anderson didn’t ask her about those controversial comments. But I understand, I guess. She’s not responsible for his actions. I’m so glad that she has a forwardly-thinking partner in Brad Pitt. They make the perfect couple. And their kids are so lucky to have them for parents. They’re both caring and compassionate people. May God bless them all.
