Amazingly giving woman. What I like most about her is her ability to be honest about who she is and what she has done and has not done in her life. I admire that she herself is able to look at her life and see mistakes. That she is grateful for having her eyes opened early enough to make changes in that life and move in a different and more productive direction. She is admired and respected because what she does is true and honest. I was watching a clip from a Bill O’ Riley show and he was interviewing Jon Voight. He told Mr. Voight that he and his staff had done some extensive research into Angelina’s work. He said that that what he found was a woman that did what she said she did..that she walked the walk.. I am sure with all the people out there who would love to bring her down. NONE of them have been able to prove that she is not the real deal. Nay sayers will come here and call her names. Say she is a phony.. WHY? because when you are not giving back to the world it is difficult for you to believe that someone else can do or be what you know you will never be..

Yeah there will be people who come here and call her names. Bring up her past.. true or false. mostly false. The reason so many people know about her life is because she has been so honest about every part of it. she has shared the bright and dark parts of it. And when you look at the things she has done that others call dark even her.. they occured when she was 14-20 years old. They love to talk about her having all these relationships, yet they can prove none of their claims. They love to talk about her taking a man from someone. Yet again you can’t make another person leave a relationship unless they want to go.

She is an honest and honorable woman. She is respected throughout the industry. Other actors praise her perfessionalism and talent, Directors would kill to have her in their film. She is able to work when she wants, and probably turns down more film roles than some actors would be offered in their entire careers. I have never heard of a person who has ever met her or worked with her say anything negative.

She and Brad have a partnership of love and respect. They were lucky to find in each other what most people search forever to find; a person that shares their passions and interest, yet gives the other person room to presue the things that challenge them together as a couple or as individual. Both had stated in countless interviews that they wanted a big family. Now in each other they have a person that shares those dreams.

I don’t care if I am called a lunatic or not. I admire them both a great deal. Yes if you have a lot of money it is easier to give some away.. Yet most people do not do that at all. I don’t understand why Brad/Angie are expected to live in a hut to prove that they care about people less fortunate. Some people scream help at home in America.. What they do not understand because most of them have never been anywhere outside the US. Is even the poorest person in this country can get help. Statements like that are just too ignorant to attempt to answer.

So to the fans.. Yeah the world can see why we are passionate about our praise of this woman.. She is an example for many to follow.

She doesn’t need to be the next Audrey Hepburn, she’s doing great being the great and compassionate Angelina Jolie. She is an icon in her own right she doesn’t need the ride the coattails of anyone else. Fifty years from now YOUR grandchildren will know her and Brad Pitt’s names.

Monsoon season compounds refugees’ troubles

Many of these refugees are living in minimal standards for shelter and are exposed daily to the harshest elements of weather, the report says.

For example, in Pakistan, some 300,000 refugees are living outdoors, in tents or similar structures, said Michael Kocher, vice president of international programs for the International Rescue Committee.

That part of the world has been hit hard by extreme weather over the past couple of months. First, extreme heat plagued Pakistan, with temperatures in May and June soaring past 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). The heat is escalating the discomfort for many.

“People are living in cramped situations, often unsanitary situations, and it’s very hot,” Kocher said. “In many places, there is not enough clean water or adequate sanitation. Heat exacerbates that problem.”

As World Refugee Day approaches — it falls on Saturday this year — the forecast calls for even more dramatic weather changes in the coming weeks. In Southeast Asia, long stretches of scorching temperatures are usually the prelude to the rainy, or monsoon, season.

The term “monsoon” refers to a seasonal reversal of wind that typically occurs in late June or early July. For countries like Pakistan and India, this change brings daily, nonstop downpours.

@there’s one thing i can say: I ‘d rather them give$ 1 million to 10 organizations than $5 million to one. Last year they gave $1million to Doctors without Borders, $1million to Global Action for Children, $2million to Global Health Committe to set up an Ethiopian Health center. In 2007 gave 5 million to MIR all donations from the Jolie Pitt Foundation. This year 1 million to Pakistan refugees and money to the hospital in Missouri. Its very curious why I never hear people criticize Jennifer Lopez who received 6 million for her twins pics’ and kept it all for her twins”trust fund for their future’ according to an interview she did with Kevin Sessums for Elle magazine but was published at the Daily Beast.

The problem I see with this is that she’s talking as if refugees are a type of people. “Refugee” should be temporary; it’s a political and geographic statement about where people are and what’s happening in their country of origin. I admire her work, but to say that she wants her children to play with “refugees” is odd. Not that her children shouldn’t know all kinds of people from all walks of life, but that the understanding should be more around “refugee” as a statement that some things are terribly wrong in the country of origin, and that these people’s identities aren’t as “refugees,” but as diverse people with diverse identities.

Working with the world’s refugees gives Angelina Jolie a new appreciation for her life in the United States. “You see people that have suffered things that you will never, ever know,” the Academy Award-winning actress told NBC’s Ann Curry on TODAY. “And you know how lucky you are.”

@Kay: That’s why she wants her kids to get to know “refugees” so they can see that they are more similar than different,they like to play football, laugh etc. Obviously right now the refugees are homeless due to war or famine but at their core the people are the same. Its no different than my volunteering at a soup kitchen and spending time getting to know the clients and realizing they are just like me. The only difference is right now they are going through a difficult time but hopefully its temporary. Spending time and helping others helps make people more emphatic imo.

Sorry to burst your little bubble, kay. But indeed, refugees ARE a ‘type’ of people. Not in the way your little brain might imagine, however. That is to say, they are not a physical ‘type’ or a racial ‘type’ but a ‘type’ based on the condition they find themselves in at any period in history/moment in time.

As Angie said in her interview with Ann Curry, someone pointed out to her that jesus, mohammed and (some other historical figure) were all refugees at one time or the other in their lives.

And also, as Angie said in that same interview, refugees have been with us since time immemorial. THAT’S because human nature never changes and many of us are destined to make the same mistakes over and over and over and over again.

Conflicts within and between nations will always give rise to refugees/displaced persons. Add to that, the vagaries of nature and anyone of us, by simply living on a vulnerable piece off land, which becomes ravaged by flood, fire, earthquake or any other natural disaster, suddenly can become displaced persons.

So, my dear ignorant little kay-who-is-so-quick-to-pass-judgement-yet-remains-so-clueless, the condition of being a refugee might be temporary for any particular person. But the global PROBLEM of refugees is a permanent one for the human race always to deal with.

I’m happy to see that some of you realize that Angelina is part of a community that is trying to bring atention to not so pretty situations going on around the world.

Her involvement also helps Americans try to see outside America which is a very hard thing to do Americans seeing themselves as part of a world community is still hard for some as you can tell by some posts.

Angelina is part of a larger group and is not in compeition with anyone. Angelina matters as does high profilers like Oprah as does the doctors without borders, as do citizen journalists as do t shirt selling college stundents, as do the regular joe or joanne who are working in their own communites trying to make a positive difference without fanfare. It’s all the same thing.

I don’t believe some of you trolls who complaian that you do work quietly yet complain about Jolie. If you are really doing charity work you would see her as an ally with a shared compassion and not someone to dismiss, especially since she has been committed on this cause for a while and works for it. Her awareness is a win win for anyone helping those less fortunate.

You know I was not a big fan of hers, but she is growing on me. I so admire her compassion. I believe she is a celebrity that truly cares about these children. I still am a big fan of Jennifer Aniston. I think she is truly a nice person. I wish people would stop bbashing both of them and move on.

What i always found weird too is all the bashing concerning her so called controversial youth…I mean, she always strikes me as being imperfect (we all are) butprecocious and mature in her choices of life.

She married at 20 with someone who was young and stayed committed to him two years. She married a second time at 23 and behave the same with her husband. And it seems each time she entered a relationship, she entered it like someone who is more mature than her age and more prone to committed relationships than her peers of the same generation who just want to have fun and enjoy their youth with superficial belongings. She wasn’t the party girl, booze girl like most are at that age. And though she admitted using drugs, we never saw her acting like a druggie. I guess she tested hard drugs at some point but once again, probably for a very punctual time since she never gave signs of addiction, was most of the time into a stable relationhip where she seems drug free and probably decided to gave up quickly, still being in control, hence probably no addiction.

She is always in control, in charge. She married BBT, discovered the sufering of refugees and people all over the world and it just gave her even more maturity. She left that kiddie husband of hers. She was the more mature one to begin with.

Overall, She actually never had an infantile behaviour wether personnally or professionnnally. She never used the physique card at the beginning of her career, like most starlets do, like most models turned actress should do. It seems that she downplayed her physique, cutting her hair, embracing her craft like a professional making people forget right from the beginning that she was a model before. A route that even Brad didn’t take as most of his first role were physical pretty boy model image related more than the one of a method actor.

It seems that all her life choices are made under the precocious or maturity sign. Always in control, always in charge,recovering from growing pains at an age when most people are still searching for themselves, are still struggling to get their act together. Jolie was already on her way to recovering and maturity at 25 and few women in and outside Hollywood, at this age decide to adopt and have a baby they will raise alone. At 25, when you are the new sex symbol you enjoy your title, you party, you bulk, you pamper yourself, you go shopping and choose only movies that glorifies your beauty. You don’t adopt and visit war torn countries to see the unbearable suffering of real people. This is not popular, this is anti publicity, this is anti star behaviour.

Being a goodwill ambassador is no party, not for the fainted heart : you have to have passion, conviction and lots, lots of emotional strength and guts, hence they are usually older with a deep life experience, an experience that Jolie has through her precocious state of mind and ways.

Something just dawned on me - A new version of the show The Biggest Loser. Instead of having fat people trying to lose weight my version would have X, Paris Hilton, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, and Hohan. They could either keep the same title or retitle the show The Biggest Fameho. Each week would be a contest to see who could come up with the wildest scheme to garner the most publicity for herself. However, each one would would have a handicap -

When a child is fed or a family is housed nobody cares if the money came from the USA or Russia, from a celebrity’s charity or a hedge fund or someone who had a pyramid scheme. All those people care about is that their bellies are full for another day and they have shelter for another night.

Any person who disparages the work of the Jolie-Pitt fund is simply not thinking (or doesn’t care) about the real fact, that someone somewhere is relieved of suffering. The Jolie-Pitts have plenty of domestic projects including housing in post hurricane New Orleans, a place that has been mostly forgotten. But what they do for the citizens of war torn regions makes a difference and if you criticize them, than plain and simple, you do not care. You do not care about other people in your species. You do not care about children. You do not care about starving people being fed. You do not care about homeless people being sheltered. You are a xenophone and a small hearted soul. There is no excuse for ANY vitriol against the Jolie-Pitt fund. I ask those who speak out against it in this blog: What have you done lately for others? My guess: NADA.

The show was great. I was so touched by her stories and her inspiration. She has such a big heart. I don’t care that she is celebrity but what she is doing is beyond the words. If our human race had a little bit of passion like she does we would have a safer and happier place to live. I watched her video plea through National Geographic on facebook and was so ashamed with people that left their comments there. I just can’t believe that there are so many without any trace of humanity. I wish that they and their families never encounter anything similar because a lot of them would be chocking on their words. I’m sure you mean well, mike, but you shouldnt buy into the urban legend that Angie had a ‘wild teen’. At age 16 she graduated high school and, according to her father in a rare interview of him talking normally about Angie (this was in the E! True Hollywood Story on Angie) he said he asked her what she wanted to do now that she had graduated and had all this time on her hands, and he said she said: i dont have a lot of time….and told him she had signed up for boxing lessons, fencing lessons, acting lessons and all sorts of goals she had set herself to accomplish that summer. Remember, this was age 16!! And by age 19 she had begun racking up the impressive list of awards and accomplishments she now has.

Angie has always been a highly focussed young woman and even in that brief period in her life that she spoke about, when she felt ‘dark’ and felt that everyone thought she was weird, that was a classic case of a true artist coming into being.

And we have all been the beneficiary of that brief period of angst that she went thru.

You wanna know what a wild teen looks like? Look no further than some of E! True HW stories of ‘where are they now’ and those hard partying ones that fill up the tabloids and trashy tv shows, etc. The Lindsay Lohans, the Nicole richies (back in the not so long ago day before she too matured-up, the paris hiltons, who is still ‘wild’, etc, etc, etc,).

I adore Angelina, but I hope she does something for the 24 MILLION CHILDREN who are starving in the US right now. Just thought I’d throw that in.

I want to express our appreciation to Ann Curry for hosting us today, and for her commitment to journalistic excellence and for reporting on conflicts and the displaced all around the world. And I want to thank and acknowledge Angelina Jolie for her tireless efforts as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has done fabulous work to help increase international attention to the needs of refugees and other persons of concern to UNHCR, thereby providing a voice to those whose plight often goes unheard.

World Refugee Day is an opportunity to reflect on the lives of millions of refugees who have been forced to flee tyranny and conflict. It is also a time to honor their courage and resilience, and to recognize the contribution of those who have been able to return to their communities or have sought new lives in their country of refuge or resettled in a third country.

The theme of this year’s World Refugee Day is “Real People, Real Needs,” and the posters of three young people here today tell the story better than I can.

On this day we also salute the courage, the determination and the resilience of refugees. Today we will hear from Kagendra and Ganga Baral, Bhutanese refugees resettled in Phoenix. They will tell the story of their flight, their struggles as refugees, and the new life they now have in the United States.

We will also hear from Rose Mapendo, a resettled refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a founder of Mapendo International, an organization that protects vulnerable African refugees and resettles them to the United States. Rose survived 16 months of imprisonment in the DRC.

I want to end my brief remarks by paying tribute to UNHCR and its staff for their amazing efforts to improve the plight of humanity by assisting nearly 32 million refugees and others of concern around the world, often putting their own lives at risk. Much of UNHCR’s work takes place in difficult and dangerous places. We note with sadness the senseless loss of life of UN humanitarian workers in Pakistan this month, including from UNHCR. While refugees continue to face challenges throughout the world, some languishing in refugee camps without a solution in sight, it is encouraging to see the progress being made by the international community in resolving longstanding refugee situations in places such as Liberia, South Sudan, Burundi, and Bhutan.

I’m very proud that the United States is the world leader in supporting UNHCR, and am grateful for our wonderful partnership with High Commissioner Antonio Guterres and his terrific staff. We are proud to be UNHCR’s strongest donor and supporter, covering approximately 25% of UNHCR’s budget. In Fiscal Year 2008, we contributed over $500 million in support of UNHCR programs.

The United States is working hard to enable those who have fled to return home in safety and dignity, and to provide those unable to return home either an opportunity to locally integrate in their countries of asylum or to start their lives anew in the United States. They are running out of reasons to try to devalue her generousity, so they are latching on this latest one, like a dog with a bone. First of all, Angie started her humanitarian work at a much younger age than Audrey did. And Audrey’s personal life was not “white as the driven” snow. She had her share of controversies. Thank God, she wasn’t living in the age of the internet at that time.

The ones who are criticizing Angie are afraid that she is, against all odds, becoming a force to be reckoned with, and there is NOTHING they can do to stop it. When I read the attacks and hate directed at Angie, I imagine women like Dina Lohan, whose entire lives are lived not taking responsibilities for anything that go wrong in their lives. I am also reminded of the movie Mean Girls - which ironically Lindsay starred in - and imagine people like the characters growing up to be adults. THese are the people we are dealing with now.

I don’t know if anyone here heard about the mother who with her daughter, played a cruel joke on a former friend of her daughter, by posing as a boy, pretending to like the girl, and then saying horrible things about her on the internet. It drove the child to commit suicide. I can very easily imagine that mother as a fan of X. Those are the kinds of people who “have X’s back”, and I am almost sure,if she meets one of them, and cameras are not around, she would not give them the time of day.

Seems as though the news reports and pictures of the actual visit as it really went down in in the second week of November 2004 make NO mention of the ex and she is in no pictures. All the news reports are about Brad’s trip and Brad’s activites - since they were a famous couple and the ex was hardly unknown if she had actually been with him then we would all have known it and seen it.

And, of course, the ex has NEVER mentioned a peep about the trip or visiting AIDS patients or meeting Mandela or anything about it - because she didn’t go.

I envision she got as far as Morocco and bailed because it wasn’t 5 star enough for her. She was filming in London during this time anyway - around November 11, 2004. . I’d love to pin this down though so I’ll look some more.

Good morning everybody.

I don’t believe X wants children. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are honest about it.
She put herself in a corner by talking about wanting kids for years now, because that’s what her fans want to hear and the way she wants to be seen.

She has to work hard to maintain her figure and I believe she is afraid of loosing that with a pregnancy and not be able to bounce back. There is nothing wrong with her natural body in my eyes. Matter of fact if you look at bikini pics, her body doesn’t look like her covers at all. Not even mentioning her face. The GQ photos were photo shopped to oblivion and if you look closely you even can see where they took inches of her body contour. That’s the reason she looks bigger in her gown at the Oscars and in the tinfoil dress. Those magazine covers are a turn off for me. Half of the time I didn’t even recognize the women on the cover.

Should she get married in the coming years, the pressure will be on again for having a child that she really don’t want. I don’t really think she wants that. Again nothing wrong with that as long as you are honest about it.

I believe she really doesn’t want to live the life or be the person her fans demand from her. It’s hard to not be able to be yourself. She is a product molded by her PR and she can blame herself for that. I don’t envy her or feel sorry for her, not with 110 mil in the bank. She made the bed and has to sleep in it. If she would have been honest from the beginning she might have lost fans, but gained new ones in the process. And she would have gained the freedom to be herself.

I admire Angie for being honest about who she is and embraces her past and her life choices, good or bad. She has the most loyal fans and attracts a new fan base as years go by, because she stays true to herself and refuses to be put into a mold. Even some of my friends that initially didn’t like her, made a turn around and are fans now. I admire her for what she accomplished in her life, considering her age. She is a woman that inspires other woman and is a great ambassador for our gender. I’m proud to be the fan of a woman like Angie.

20 June 2009 –Senior United Nations officials marked World Refugee Day on Saturday with a call for greater efforts to protect the over 42 million people worldwide forced to flee violent conflict and persecution, many lacking basic humanitarian needs, such as shelter, clean water and food.

“The theme for this year’s observance of World Refugee Day ¬¬– ‘real people, real needs’ – underscores how much refugees have lost and how much the humanitarian community must do to help them,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a message for the Day.

Mr. Ban added there are gaps in “meeting the basics: shelter, health services, education, food, clean water, sanitation, and protection from violence and abuse.”

Malnutrition levels and mortality rates are frequently higher in displaced populations, and single women and girls are especially vulnerable to exploitation, he said.

Noting that staying in school reduces exposure to such abuse, Mr. Ban stressed that more “resources are need to build and maintain education facilities for refugees.”
.
The Secretary-General said that meeting these and many other needs of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) takes commitment and action. “Solidarity must be the foundation of our response … especially so at a time when the economic crisis is putting pressure on humanitarian and development budgets.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres said that this is a time of global uncertainty, which is particularly heightened for refugees and IDPs who have lost “not only their livelihoods and homes, but their loved ones, their friends, their communities and their countries.”

Refugee children who fled the Central African Republic (CAR) to neighbouring Cameroon where mortality rates are sometimes seven times higher than the emergency level, are one of the many vulnerable groups, Mr. Guterres said in a message for World Refugee Day.

He described the situation in Georgia, where IDPs have been living for 15 years in “squalid, overcrowded collective centres lacking water, insulation from the cold and functioning sewage systems,” highlighting conditions suffered by refugees and displaced worldwide.

With adequate resources, much of the hardship can be minimized, said Mr. Guterres. “But without that support, we are forced daily to make heart-breaking decisions that directly affect the lives and well-being of the millions of uprooted families we are charged with protecting.”

Hollywood actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors, Angelina Jolie, who has produced a 30 second video for the Day, said that as an American she understood the “strength that diversity has given my country – a country built by what some would now dismiss as asylum-seekers and economic migrants.”

Geneva: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to the UN refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says it is grateful for the donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. It said Thursday the money will go to alleviating suffering caused by the “most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade.”

UNHCR says over two million Pakistanis have been driven from their homes this year by fighting between government troops and Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.

Jolie has visited refugees in Pakistan on three missions since becoming goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001. The Oscar-winning actress took Pitt with her on one such visit in 2005.

The Hollywood couple have pledged the cash through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation to help refugees fleeing the Taliban in Pakistan.

Jolie was reduced to tears when she spoke about the plight of the millions of displaced people around the globe ahead of yesterday’s World Refugee Day.
