Here’s another helpful link. There’s a revenue example of at the link that explains the basics - the nut, the net, the gross and when there’s a profit for theaters. It also explains why a 10 oz bucket of popcorn costs $20…

This is actually part of a large tutorial on how the movie distribution works. It’s a little dated, but still on point…

He did it just to worry you, troll. Surely he knows you roll outa bed everymorning to suckle at the teet of MISERY!!.

Then you spend the rest of your unproductive day trying to spread it around ike fresh manure at a picnic site.

#143 Tijen: Jared does answer his email, but not as often as he used to do when he was just starting out. You know homeboy is now rubbing elbows with celebs, so he doesn’t have as much time as he used to have.

I think you are right about the DVD in USA. The studio makes more than 50%. But I don’t think that the retailer only gets $ 1,00, cause they have to pay the rental, the salaries and other expenses and have to make a profit.
But you’re right that the studio makes much more than 50%.
But only tentpoles sells a lot of DVDs.

Thanks Briseis. I guess he will not delete the post with my name which is not my post. Oh well..

#156 Tijen: Probably not. I don’t know if he bothered to delete in the previous Brad thread a stupid post from a jenhen about Angie passing away. I emailed him, so did irma and a host of others, but the last time I checked it was still there. I haven’t bothered to check it lately, but I know irma made a comment that Jared still had not deleted the offensive post.

I love him!!!

i hate it when JJB is infiltrated by the trolls.
they used to have a nice atmosphere there.
guli is still out of commission. .

The viedio is not working no more but I saw it yesterday. They make it funny without saying any words.

I got sidetracked looking for that article on how movie revenues are split between theaters and studios, but I posted a couple of links that summed it up. Anyway…here’s what got me off-track…interesting roles actors have either turned down or been considered for…
.
–Sean Connery - Morpheus in The Matrix and The Architect in the sequels, Galdalf in LOTR, Phillip in Alexander (the Val Kilmer role), considered for the role of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music…just imagine a young Sean Connery singing…women would have been wetting their panties in theaters around the globe…
.
–Sean Penn - supposedly was considered for the role of Tyler Durden in Fight Club; Jerry Lee Lewis in Great Balls of Fire (Dennis Quaid played the role); Sands in Once Upon A Time in Mexico (Johnny Depp’s role); I don’t see this listed, but Brad’s role in Babel. Brad said Sean Penn had turned the role down, so when they did Tree of Life Penn was giving him shite about having to play anxiety for 6 weeks
.
–Tiny Tom - turned down Alexander in Alexander (must not have liked the gay overtones), backed out of Donnie Brasco (Depp). turned down I Am Legend (Will Smith), turned down Jack Traven in Speed (Keanu); considerered for Mick in Bad Boys (Penn), John Nash in A Beautiful Mind (Russell Crowe), Edward Scissorhands (Depp…fcuk…I’d have paid money to see that shite!), Jim Morrison in The Doors (Val Kilmer), Sam Wheat in Ghost (Patrick Swayze), Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley (Matt Damon…once again scared off by the gay overtones.); attated to play Benjamin Button when Spielberg was doing the project in the early ’90s.
.
–Will Smith - Neo in The Matrix, considered for Willy Wonky in the remake, considered for John Smith in Mr. & Mrs. Smith (this is when Brad dropped out when NK had to drop the movie due to scheduling conflicts when The Stepford Wives shoot ran long)
.
–Putrid - Emma Peel in The Avengers, just can see this one at all - Ava Gardner in The Aviator (thankfully she had to drop out!), considered for Roxie in Chicago, Rose in The Titanic (but she was too busy stealing the Shakespeare In Love script from Winona Ryder…)
.
–Mel Gibson - The Terminator in The Terminator, Batman in Batman (the Michael Keaton version because he was committed to Leathal Weapon), Two Face in Batman Forever (Which, considering his penchat for booze and hookers while considering himself a devout Catholic, would have been appropriate and very self aware.); auditioned for the role of Mozart (that’s just wrong!); turned down John Steed in The Avengers (Ralph Fiennes); turned down Maximus in Gladiator (thank God!); considered for Brad’s role in The Fountain; turned down The Perfect Storm (Which Porgie thanks him repeatedly for because it was his last hit under his own steam - 8 freaking years ago, yet people keep funding his movies); turned down Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costner with THE single-worst fake British accent evah!); Considered for the role of Elliot Ness in The Untaoubables (Costner again); considered for the role of Wolverine (this must have been when the role was more comedic like the character is in the comic books); turned down Proof of Life (Russell Crowe may not thank Mel, but Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan do, otherwise their marriage would have limped along for another year or two.)
.
–Al Pacino - Han Solo in Star Wars, Roy Neary in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy, 3 movies that Dustin Hoffman ended up doing - Ted Kramer in Kramer vs. Kramer, and another Dustin Hoffman role in The Marathon Man
.
–Rock Hudson - Ben-Hur in Ben-Hur; considered for Mark Rutland in Marnie (Sean Connery); the studio (Universal) wanted him for Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbirth (thank God the producer got his way - Gregory Peck)
.
–Russell Crowe - turned down the role of Aragon (Viggo) in LOTR trilogy and Morpheus in The Matrix; considered for Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code; considered for The Fountain when Brad dropped out (Russell could make a very decent living out of doing the movies Brad turns down), considered for the role of Wolverine in X-men (can you see fat Russell from last year getting as ripped as Hugh Jackman? ROTFLMFAOPIMP!)
.
–Porgie - was considered for Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code (Porgie’s prolly pissed he didn’t get the role because it was a guaranteed hit under his own steam without having to coattail ride on Brad’s back.); was foolishing going to reprise his role as Batman until his sequel got shitcanned. Turned down World Trade Center (Nic Cage); considered for the role of Artemus Gordon in The Wild Wild West (a dog of a movie, but it would have been a different coattail to ride…); got the role in The Perfect Storm because Harrison Ford turned it down (see…he even sorta rode Harrison Ford’s coattail!); and of course the still-bitter-about role he lost to Brad - J.D. in Thelma & Louise
.
–Angie - Charlie’s Angels, supposed Angie was also considered for Fincher’s Panic Room when Nic Kidman had to drop out, but the role went to Jodie Foster. It also says she was considered for the role of Clarice Starling to replace for Jodie Foster in Hannibal…the role went to Julianne Moore.
.
–Brad - turned down Neo in The Matrix, Apollo 13, but it doesn’t say which role…probably the Kevin Bacon role took Se7en instead, The Bourne Trilogy, Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Hephaestion in Alexander (Moron! Should have done that instead of Troy and he’d could have ditched X a year sooner!). It’s not listed but he said in an interview a few years ago that he turned down the role of Peter Parker in Spiderman.
.
–Sarah Jessica Parker - auditioned for Baby in Dirty Dancing!
.
–Geena Davis - Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny (LOL! 5′2″ Joe Pesci and 6″1″ Geena Davis…too funny)
.
–Denzel Washington - supposedly considered for Reggie Hammond in 48 Hours (Eddie Murphy), Blade in Blade, Paul for Hotel Rwanda (Don Cheadle); turned down I, Robot (Will Smith), turned down Curtis Taylor, Jr. in Dreamgirls because he can’t sing! (Jamie Foxx’s role - he should have turned it down because he was too old for the role!); backed out of playing Alex Cross in Kiss the Girls (Morgan Freeman)
.
–Ah-nuld - Turned down John McClane in Die Hard. James Cameron orginally wanted him to play Kyle Reese in The Terminator. Years ago he was considred for Captain America, but his accent was a problem! LOL. No shite.
.
–John Wayne - turned down Dirty Harry! Turned down Major Riesman in The Dirty Dozen (Lee Marvin). Turned down a role in Blazing Saddles because, “I can’t be in this picture, it’s too dirty…but I’ll be the first in line to see it.”; wanted to play General Patton but the producer turned him down (George C. Scott got the role…and won an Oscar)
.
–X - just for chuckles - supposedly was considered for Samantha for the Bewitched movie. The role went to Nic Kidman. Now…spend the rest of your evening trying to imagine X wriggling her huge ass honker before she had it wittled down twice…
.
Okay…enough of that…you can see why I got sidetracked. If you’re interested in seeing what other actors missed out on…I got most of these at the link below, but others I found before I stumbled across the site below…

can someone explain how Harrison For is the highest paid actor?

@Passing Through: WHERE IS THE LINK?
.
+++++++++++++++++
.
Jared needs to get rid of that stupid “Reply to” link because it doesn’t quote which post is being replied to in the replier’s reply.
.
Where’s the link to what? Are you talking about my post about Brad being a decoy? If so…go back and read the post…I said RadarOnline. Stick “.com” on the end of it and you’ve got the link. It was on their homepage.

If x movies are bombed in the BO
how can she be the 2nd highest paid actress?

To Passing Through:
I think you didn’t understand my numbers.
.
++++++++++++++
.
I understood your numbers. However, YOU are not understanding what I’m saying - I DISAGREE WITH YOUR MATH.
.
Frankly, I’m confused as to why you’re obsessed with it. I was just giving an example of why it’s possible for Cam Diaz to have made $30MIL off Shrek
.
There’s a basic fact here that’s indisputable - the studios don’t disclose how much they really make on a movie, not even at the box office. Most studios act as their own distributor so that’s factored into how much they’re making on a movie as well. I posted a link that explain it all pretty well, but without the actual numbers it’s all a guessing game…hence your guess and my guess aren’t the same.

Just twitted brad pitt and everybody’s watching Troy!

aj @ 07/02/2009 at 8:16 pm
.
For the DVD sales the studio again takes part of the gross, cause there is the retailers profit. Than I said the studio gets 50% of the gross (90 million). The other half goes to the stores.
.
>>>>>>>>
Hi aj, I’ve been following the exchange between yourself and PT. Thought you’d like to know that during the negotiations between the writers union and the studio (and also the actors union and the studio), the union reps and various writers claimed that studios make up to 90% of the DVD sale price. Then there’s TV licenses for re-runs on TV and of course, DVD rentals. TV license fees are pretty much 100% profit. I’m not even sure if you have to send a DVD over to the TV station anymore or just download everything on the internet!!
.
Also, we must consider the international component to all of these revenue streams, ie Box office, TV licenses, DVD sales and rentals.
.
Someone wrote that in the last 15 years, only 1 of Brad’s movies failed to make over 100m in worldwide box office. The one failure was AOJJ. Angelina is similarly popular internationally.
.
But, its not just the international box office receipts of their movies, it’s also all the international tie ins. As Brad and Angelina are popular internationally, their movies do better internationally. Their movies are more likely to be licensed for TV. Their international DVDs sales and rentals are likely to be better then average as well - especially if they are action movies.
.
So once you add the DVD sales and rentals and TV Licenses, once you add the INTERNATIONAL component of those DVD sales and rentals and TV licenses into the equation, then we start to understand how these studios make money.
.
There are some people who say that because of the rampant piracy in the international market, DVD sales and rentals are not as high as in the US market. This statement is undoubtedly true.
.
However, when you consider that international markets include the EU, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, - where copyright laws are quite strictly enforced and respected, you are still talking about a population of more than 500m humans. Most young people in the EU speak English - at least well enough to enjoy a movie. Same with Japan. They may also dub movies into the local languages.
.
I won’t try to estimate what the international DVD sales, rentals and TV licenses are but I think it is safe to say that whatever the studios make in north america, its almost all PURE PROFIT!!
.

Harrison Ford? Please he’s a money making machine. Just because people don’t talk about a particular actor doesn’t mean he’s not doing anything. Brad will be like this one day. He’ll be real under the radar but will be making a lot of money especially from his production company. They will say the same thing about Brad that they are about Harrison, that he’s old, what has he done lately?, they don’t like his girlfriend, etc…. The trick is to get into a franchise. All the top actors have.

OT
Yay for the williams sisters in wimby finals!

The theater owners don’t get part of the profit , they get part of the gross
.
++++++++++++++++
.
Got a new cat that’s driving me bonkers…but one final comment and then I’m done with this discussion - If you go back and look at my numbers you will see that my math is based on the GROSS for Shrek The Third. You’re dividing the gross in half as your starting point before subtracting the studio’s expenses and that’s not accurate. I started with the FULL GROSS and subtracted expenses from that. What’s left is the studio’s profit. ALL BOX OFFICE REVENUES BELONG TO THE STUDIO/DISTRIBUTOR. The theater is merely collecting them. The theater is then paid based on the monies they collected FOR THE STUDIO/DISTRIBUTOR. You’re assuming that a portion of the money is the theater’s to start off with and that’s not correct. If you read the info at the How Stuff Works link then you’ll see that in reality your math is just as wrong as you said mine was.

UGH! You are WAY too literal. I said “FOR EXAMPLE”. I don’t work in the retail industry so I don’t have any idea what the real wholesale & retail prices for DVDs are, hence the wording “FOR EXAMPLE”. Also, you’re forgetting that stores sell more than one product. They don’t make a huge profit on every item they sell. They make small profits on every item or they don’t stay in business very long - especially not with Wal-mart around. If I’m at Target and I see a DVD that’s $21.99 I immediately say to myself, “I can get that for $3 less at Wal-mart…” and off I go to Wal-mart. Luckily for Target some people HATE Wal-mart. Frankly I love any store that saves me money. Wal-mart is my friend…I’ll just ignore the 400 illegal aliens slaving away in the produce department for 22 hours every day..
