Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning: Runaway Ruckus

Will you look at all those clueless, Hollywood-brainwashed comments? I don’t think any one of those kids understands for a moment what they’re talking about.

First off, Kristen Stewart, while a “hot” young actress, isn’t nearly as good as she thinks she is. For that matter, neither is Dakota Fanning. But Dakota’s handlers have hitched her fading star to Kristen’s. That they’ve done so in one of the most perverse movies whose script I’ve ever read means little to them. After “Hounddog”, what could?

Who could call either Joan Jett or Cherie Currie laudable characters? They were (and still are) tramps of the lowest order. Both Kristen and Dakota (in particular) look like monsters from a cheap ’50s horror film in costume. Their characters, according to the script, are equally pathetic.

In fact, I’d be hard pressed to quote any scene from the film without having to censor half of it for young readers. It’s THAT bad. And, believe me, I’ve seen some bad ones… including two versions (pre-production and working scripts) of “Hounddog”, the most child sexploitative American film ever made. “The Runaways” screenplay is almost as amateurishly written, as well.

In fact, the only factor that places this new film over the one that devastated Dakota’s career three years ago is that it doesn’t (apparently) use preteens in blatant sex scenes. (Although it comes close on one occasion.) In every other category, it’s worse than “Hounddog” in its non-stop depravity. The very first scene establishes Dakota as a budding Jenna Jameson… and it’s downhill from there.

Obviously, Dakota’s handlers are counting on Kristen’s star to shield her from the criticism that’s bound to follow… much as Dakota’s was used in “Hounddog” to protect the other cast members and filmmakers. It didn’t work then. If it doesn’t work here, then Kristen’s image as a “romantic teen star” will be trashed and her career, perhaps, along with it. And deservedly so. And if THAT happens, it will be that final blow to Dakota’s once-promising, but now terribly degraded image and career.

Maybe it would be for the best in both cases. Once actresses have sunk this far and this young, they’ll be mostly confined to such characters for the rest of their careers. That such movies as these CAN be made without legal penalty is one of the great, underreported scandals of our time.
