Jolie speaks about schools, not babies or Brad

Heavily-pregnant Hollywood star Angelina Jolie broke her silence on Wednesday from her African hideaway, but she wasn't talking babies or Brad Pitt.

Jolie, whose trip to Namibia has sparked a blaze of interest in the international media, took time to promote one of her favorite causes: boosting educational opportunities for the world's poor.

Talking to reporters in a teleconference with British finance minister Gordon Brown, Jolie said it was time for the world to get behind the Global Campaign for Education, a new plan aimed at giving 100 million children in poor countries the chance to go to school.

"I'm just thrilled to have this opportunity to help bring this to the forefront of peoples' minds this week... It is a rare occasion that I am really thanking the press," said Jolie.

She and Pitt have seen their Namibian hotel besieged by paparazzi photographers eager for pictures of the couple's expected child.

Jolie's call came as U.S. activists increased pressure for support for the education initiative, which got a boost this month when Brown announced the British government would spend $15 billion over 10 years to train teachers and build and equip schools in poor countries.

Brown said the onus was now on other developed countries to pitch in, adding that he was sure both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund would both sharpen the world's focus on the need for education.

"We have to raise $10 billion per year if we are to ensure that every child has access to education," Brown said.

The appeal for help for the world's underprivileged children marked a return to form for Jolie, who together with Pitt has in recent weeks played a cat-and-mouse game with reporters desperate for news of their first child, expected in mid-May.

The celebrity couple issued a plea for privacy at their Namibian hotel on the cold shores of the Atlantic, but since then has allowed selected media, including a U.S. television network, access.

Jolie declined to discuss her own baby but said schools for the world's children remained close to her heart.

"It has been proven that a basic primary education can completely change the lives of people around the world," said Jolie, who has made numerous visits to refugee camps in her role as a U.N. goodwill ambassador and has adopted a son from Cambodia and a daughter from Ethiopia.

"It's not just my voice, it's everybody's voice ... this is the best investment we can make."

I am in awe of Angelina's human essence, the love she has for humanity as a whole and, especially, for her children. She is a remarkable woman.

"just kind of funny. If (Brad) saw this, he would probably understand why I was laughing. Because I just don't know how to address that kind of thing." Wow... who is she kidding. All the sudden she is so perplexed.
And how is her one year old daughter so "strong." This is an infant. No need to try to turn her into a strong black woman, already. She shouldn't have to struggle any more. And she shouldn't have to turn into a diplomat. Talk about pressuring your kids!

Part of me is so conflicted about this whole thing...I do think they make an adorable family and the kids are cute..hey brad ain't too bad either but on the other hand I sort of feel they both just toy with the media and run off to Namibia and create this big spectacle only to turn around and then be like "leave us alone". I can appreciate Angelina's work with the third world but then again they are staying at a posh resort in Namibia that is costing them something like $35,000 a week or month I heard. It's not exactly like they are "roughin" it in the bush. Granted I do think she and Brad spend valuable time and money on situations like children's education which is more than most celebrities do, but there is just something ironic about the whole thing at the same time.

I think both of them are so full of their own self importance.
They want to use the press when it suits them. It doesn't
work that way. If they honestly want to help people why
don't they just do it behind the scenes and shut up already.
If they went away forever it would be fine with me. I don't
know that they really do anything except generate more
publicity for themselves. They are like a traveling circus. It even says in the BIBLE when you give to charity to not draw attention to yourself, do lot let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. I might have that backwards. My point is, it is great they want to help. They are both semi-intelligent and they know what is going on in the press about them. If they really want it to die down and to end the drama they need to just get married and do their work without making a circus out of it.

I admire her, she does what she feels right, tireless and consistent even at her present condition.

She is in a diff league from among the current crop of hollywood actresses, she has the respect and trust of people like Gordon Brown. He was the one who invited her to join the teleconference, they met in Davos early this year.

To # 25, they have a certain standard of leaving to keep up and they can't help but to spend much money especially where their securities are concerned. But having said that, just think what they have given in retun to charities, monetary wise and just by raising awareness to various worthy causes that they have supported.

The difference between AJ and other celebrity philanthopists is that Angie actually goes to the affected areas of the world, rolls up her sleeves, sleeps in tents and basically acculturalizes herself in the environment. She does not just sit in board rooms, allocating her money in an impersonal way. Do you know that she gives almost 1/2 of her income away?! She is a living example of what people should be thinking, saying and doing for the greater good and perhaps even survival of our humankind. I did not really learn about AJ until she became an activist of the world. Margaret Meade once said that activisim is the rent one pays for living on this earth. Both AJ and BP have assumed responsibility for their fame and are using it in the most honest and courageous way possible.
I applaud them both for their consciousness.

and I won't be able to post a lot, but I feel that I need to answer

If Angie thinks that little Zee is a strong person despite her young
age I believe her. Haven't you heard stories about newborns that
are HIV positive, that are dealing with cancer, or with heart
diseases and that are fighting for to stay alive? You can tell that
those babies are fighter and are very strong. Shortly after Angie
adopted little Z, the girl was sick and rushed to the hospital where
she stayed for some times. So maybe Angie saw how she was
fighting to stay alive and knew at that time that her daughter
was, is and will be a fighter all her life. Anyway, even at such a
young age as 1 year old, you can SOMETIME tell if a kid is going to
be a leader, a follower or, whatever.

About Angie wanting her child to become someone important that
will help others, I'm fine with it. But, I have to admit that it's a lot
of pressure for a kids and I hope she will let them become
whatever their want. But, every parent has great expectation for
his or her kids. My dad wanted me to be a surgeon, and there is
no way I’m not going to be a surgeon. But, Angie did say that she
"HOPES" that little Zee…, she didn't say that "I WANT HER TO BE
A…" or "SHE WILL BECOME A…". Not everyone wants his or her
kids to be as useless as Paris Hilton (sorry I just need to add
this). But, kids something look at their parents as “world models”,
so, if Angie and Brad are their “world models”, I can see those kids
becoming really good humanitarians.

#30 She's an ambassador for the U.N. Her job is to draw attention to the things she talks about. She never said anything in the past about donating anything to anyone since 2001 but the press found out about it and published it.
The paparrazi that are running after them in a dangerous way, digging holes in tunnels are the ones they appealed to, to stay away. They have however granted access to those who are interested in talking about their causes not just people interested in taking their pictures to make money for the fun of it.

Angelina is a GOODWILL AMBASSADOR for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. She is supposed to DRAW attention to the plight of the refugees and the dispossessed. You say that they should help people quietly and behind the scenes. But that is not how a goodwill ambassador does his or her job -- they actually have to publicise the plight of the people they are helping. And, may I add, if you have a problem with their high visibility, then by all means DON'T go to a thread which has either BRAD, ANGELINA or BRANGELINA (or in this case, NAMIBIA) on the title.

There is a big difference between having the press hound your every move and posing for a photoshoot. They know people want to see pictures of them and they're hoping this would satisfy them a little. The interview is another brilliant move, why not use this attention to promote something good?
$35,000 a week....you're looking at this from one angle. The angle where they are spending it, you forget that this money is is going into the economy. It is Economics, Betsy, plain and simple. If this doesn't make sense, just think: why do most countries spend a lot of money promoting tourism? Is it so visitors can see how lovely their country is or they can spend their money? I don't know if you know much about Namibia, it is a small country, Tourism is high on the list of source of income.
Don't worry about Namibia, they are very happy with infusion of cash into their country.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie gave her backing to a Gordon Brown premiership as she heaped praise on the Chancellor for his role in a global education campaign.

The 30-year-old actress spoke of her admiration for Mr Brown's commitment to providing an education for every child in the world and added she hoped he would have the chance to do more in the future.

She was speaking from Namibia, south west Africa, during a conference call with the media to publicise the Global Campaign for Education to meet the Millennium Development Goal of getting every child into school by 2015.

"He (Mr Brown) is somebody that I like very much and I hope he does have the chance to do more and more good things. I think he certainly will if he has the chance, so yes, personally, I would like to see it," Ms Jolie said in a response to a question about whether Mr Brown would make a good Prime Minister.

Earlier, she said she had been thrilled by Mr Brown's announcement of an extra 15 billion dollars (£8.5 billion) over the next ten years towards the goal of universal free education.

She said this move had given "so much momentum" to the campaign.

In response, Mr Brown said pregnant Ms Jolie, who has travelled widely as a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees goodwill ambassador, had shown "inspirational leadership" and wished her well for the birth of her child.

Campaigners estimate there are 100 million children worldwide who do not go to school. An extra 15 million more teachers will be needed to fill this gap in order for class sizes to be brought down to around 40 children per class, according to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Jolie has broken her silence about her high-profile relationship with Brad Pitt, saying even they never discuss it.

The actress, who is expecting the heart-throb's baby, told NBC's Ann Curry her life with him was "one of those funny things that just happens".

I'm sick and tired of reading how Angie & Brad should be quiet about their humanitarian efforts. Being silent does not help the cause.

I work for a highly successful non profit, we actively seek and retain celebrity endorsements for the following reasons:

1. Give us tons of FREE publicity
2. Donations start pouring in
3. People are more likely to volunteer their time to support our mission

I wish more celebrities were like Brad & Angie. Giving behind the scenes is nice but screaming it from the rooftops while inspiring others to give does more for a cause than JUST writing a check will ever do.

I am just wondering what country you live in? To bring any
attention to anything including what's on sale at your local food
store requires press. WHY do you find AJ's use of the press to
promote her causes for education and humanitarian causes? That's what the press and media is there for. If
you were promoting your duaghters girl scout cookies sales would
it be fair to say to you and your daughter "shut up and do it behind the scenes already...?"
AJ & BP are not promoting themselves. They are promoting their
"work" which is what we all do. If their movie fans are interested in
their lives and their children, than like any one in the
entertainment biz knows, a certain amount of exposure is necessary to promote your work and fulfill public interest demands. These 2
people have managed to remain humble in protecting their rights
to privacy and at the same time being kind enough to give people
a glimpse into their private world of family.

uniformed, bias and out of touch with politics, media
communications, the humanitrian efforts on the issues in Dafur,
education, poverty and international medical concerns like AIDS,
malaria, the reconstruction of New Orleans....goes on & on. These issues are in the PRESS everyday all around the world.

So do me a favor. Remain behind the scenes and follow your own
advice." Shut up already" and don't ever quote the Bible for your
weak and irresponsible posts. That is NOT what that verse was
saying. Like Jolie says. Everyone need to get educated.

#30 just wants AJ to be quiet about her humanitarian work so JA won't look so bad compared to her! I am a living proof that AJ is doing the right thing by bringing awareness to her causes. I became interested and am donating to UNHCR and the Millenium Project. If she just silently donates to her causes, then they will only get what ever she gives, this way they get more. Every dollar counts. Iwill check out her new education for all children cause next. Thank you AJ for trying to make the world a better place to live.

What makes JJ's site fascinating especially on the BAMZ+1 threads is the diversity of its supporters. Every fan comes from different countries posting round the clock on different time zones and that is truly amazing and speaks highly on the worldwide popularity of "Brangelina."I for one is a huge fan of Brad thru the years and I am so happy that he is with Angelina and raising a family. Among all the women in his life, I believe that he has finally met his true love. I wholeheartedly agree, Em. Each and everyone of the threads for Brad and Angelina (even this silly poster one) gets so many hits within the hour it is posted, while other threads merit maybe 5 or 10, maximum is maybe 30. That goes to show how passionate people are over my most favorite couple. And to think, until Brad had been divorced from JA, I never paid much attention to him even though I thought he was so good-looking. It was only after the divorce and the hook-up with AJ that I began to really really pay attention to this handsome man and most beautiful woman.

Marking global education week, NBC New's Ann Curry travels to Namibia, Africa, for an exclusive interview with Angelina Jolie, who has taken on a new cause, calling for all the world's children to be given the opportunity to get an education. In the interview, Jolie talks about her new life and motherhood. In addition, Jolie reveals to Curry that she is not yet eight months pregnant and knows the sex of her baby. The exclusive interview will be broadcast on “Today,” Thursday, April 27, and on“Dateline,” Sunday, April 30.

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Why global education has seemingly become a global mission for Jolie

Curry: It seems also, for you, kind of a personal thing. You have two children you've adopted, both of whom might have been in this same circumstance of not being able to get educated.

Jolie: I look at them and I just think ... especially my daughter ... there's no possible way she would have gone to school ... she is so smart and so strong. And her potential as a woman one day is great ... hopefully ... she will be active in her country and in her continent when she's older. And because she'll have a good education, she'll be able to do that much more.

How she feels about the new direction her life has taken over the last few years

Jolie: I'm just very glad that I got on it ... my life is very full ... I'm very proud when I see my children, Mad who's four, just how he adjusts to different places in the world and different people and his views and the kind of man he's gonna be. I'm very lucky. But I do feel some people just don't have the chance to discover certain things. And so again ... if anybody was watching, I would say ... we're all exactly the same.

Just stupid.

Angelina and Brad will create spectacle no matter where they are
in the world because they are 2 HUGE stars in their own right and
together they are like the sun in their heat (by heat I mean
popularity). The paps and the stories will follow them whether
they cater to it or not. So if they are going to have press
attention no matter what they do, I think they are just trying to
use the attention for good and not keep it solely for their own
personal publicity. Tom and Katie they are not. The spotlight
shines on them so they deflect it on the issues that would
otherwise be ignored. They could have stayed in in Los Angeles,
but now people are talking about Namibia, which I'm certain

Brangelina Baby Due in About a Month, Jolie Says

Angelina Jolie has revealed that her and Brad Pitt's baby is not due as early as the media's been speculating.

Jolie tells NBC that she's not quite eight months pregnant. Some reports had her due as early as next week. She also says she knows the sex of the baby, but won't say what it is.

As for her relationship with Pitt, Jolie says it makes her "giggle" to see how fascinated the public is with them. She says she and Pitt don't talk about their relationship, even at home. She says they just live their lives.

Portions of the interview will air on the "Today" show tomorrow and Sunday's "Dateline."

She's now on a forced rest cure. Her ex-husband, our mom and the kids kidnapped her and they are in Goa until the end of next week. lucky heffa...(the Goa part not the illness)

In response to the comment of "Part of me is so conflicted about this whole thing...I can appreciate Angelina's work with the third world but then again they are staying at a posh resort in Namibia that is costing them something like $35,000 a week or month I heard. I understand your conflict, and it is ironic but...I have worked for one of the most well-known environmentalists in the world today. He is incredibly well-off too, from his broadcasting and speaking work.

He says he can't live his life with the guilt for what he has and what others don't. It is from this place of peace financially and at home that he has the energy to do the work he does, and he understand that suffering by eschewing all personal property and money, wouldn't help anyone out either.

Brad and Jen appear to have maintained a strong professional relationship. According to sources, Brad Pitt wants his ex-wife to star in the upcoming film, The Senator's Wife. The film, which is being produced by Brad's production company, Plan B Productions, was specifically developed with Jen in mind. A source says,

What I am confused about is why some are concerned about a backlash because of People mag having so much about Brangelina in their magazine. I havent noticed very much at all the past year. because they are in the relationship and they don't need to talk
about it. In fact from the people I've encountered in my life they
only talk about their relationships when there is a problem or
when they are asked about it. In life you normally talk about the
practical things that are going on and not "how do you feel about
the status of our relationship." Ultimately, it the actions of

Well, I don't think she quite meant it that way. Of course they talk about their future. They couldn't have started the adoption ball rolling without some kind of discusion, Or where they wanted this baby to be born. And I dont know this for a fact, but I am sure they do talk to each other about how much they care for and love each other. I believe Angie may have been talking about a discussion on how they met, how they came together as a couple. I think those kind of things they dont ruminate on. (quite unlike the tabloids). They know their own truth, and see no need to analyze what is. Just living their lives in a healthy way, disregarding any negative energy from the outside.
I think that is beautiful.

Angelina was briefly mentioned regarding the ad she took out in the paper. So it doesn't seem like she hates Angelina. At least they have a common connection with regards to human rights.

Long time no post for me, though I'd like to swing back through now and then! Life's so busy!
I just couldn't contain my feelings anticipating this new interview with my 'ole`buddy` as my husband calls Angie. I miss her and find the news appearances barely scratching the surface.. See, I don't normally experience this connection to anyone famous, so Angie, you're my first, LOL. What draws me and keeps me rivetted? Her dedication, her drive to expose the ignorance that so many turn from out of convienence, her tenacity to utilize a growing recognition and interest in her person to further the truth on a level non-celebs only dream of. (not to mention, Angie, you're the most gorgeous woman in the universe)
I need to clear up a few misconceptions from a previous post on the education thread a couple weeks back. Yes, I'm a teacher: I teach at a Title I elementary school, 100% minority, 80/20 Hispanic, American Indian. Yes, I have opinions about the current condition/crisis in public education. So Be It. I've seen a lot. Far more than I'd describe on a blog. Those experiences/struggles in the system have led me to view political change as necessary. For years my people were thrown to the dogs in defending language, heritage, and basics of family survival. For these reasons and many more I am strongly drawn to the education campain endorsed by Angie. The state of our global economy is at stake. Our own children will lose (again) the rights we've struggled for if the level of awareness to change the hatred and genocide of militant oppressors goes unheeded. So, yes, I've been called 'naive' by one blog responder, but if that is my sin, so be it. I'd rather be called such names than remain ignorant to the atrocities that are tearing our world to pieces. As far as being 'naive', 32 years of residence on an American Indian Reservation does not mean I have no other perspective on global or regional education. We are at constant flux of migrant farm students and limited resources. To imagine that children in Africa and elsewhere will be given the chance at an education really brightens my sometimes jaded view. To me it is sad that Oprah barely mentioned Angie's contributions to this global process. Though, hoping for better, I can teach once again that kindness does exist when one creates the opportunity. We can all help, even those who think they have little to give. Peace out~~

The UN saw what she did and asked her to be a Goodwill Ambassador, who are high-profile people where the POINT is to use the press they are already getting or capable of getting for some good. They are not asking for you and me to do most of what the work is about, although our awareness and any extra hands should you want to volunteer can help, but they shine a light on a problem by deflecting it OFF themselves when it's ALREADY THERE and onto an issue that then puts pressure on those world leaders who CAN do something about it.
What always surprises me is that people say when she is using an interview to talk about a humanitarian cause that she is a media whore, but Lindsay Lohan who can pose on every red carpet to every party in L.A. for a new cellphone is not lambasted this way. Isn't it good that if you are going to have your picture taken, to arrange it and make them pay for it and send the money to UNICEF, or should they just parade around on red carpets waving and try to make it all about themselves?
Yes, they are staying in a resort, and the high cost is due to renting out all 14 rooms. By staying at a place like that, they have some control over their protection. They were constantly harassed and surrounded -- maybe you didn't see the video when they were trying to leave Haiti after stopping there while Angelina was working in neighboring Dominican Republic on a movie. It was dangerous, and certainly worse as she got more pregnant, and with two small children. By going to Namibia, they got the privacy they needed, and also drew attention to a part of the world that most people were so ignorant about that someone could make a false report that lions were protecting them and many people believed it.
So, yes, if the press is going to hound her anyway, she is going to use it for good, and besides, that's her JOB with the UN, who recognize that she is a magnet for the press. Besides, like you pointed out, both are intelligent enough to study up on these subjects and be able to speak well about them.

It's silly to call Brad and Angie cheaters if the conception day was
before the official divorce. Jen and Brad separated in January of
2005 and then Jen filed paperwork for divorce in March or
something like that, so Brad and Jen weren't together. They were
just waiting for the paperwork to go through. Eventhough they
were technically married still, it was in name only. The 2 people in
the marriage were moving on and not reconciling so to call them
cheaters if Angie conceived in say, August, is really reaching.

Furthermore, Jen was having a relationship too last year, with VV
and I'm pretty sure that started before October. The truth is, no
adultery was committed in conceiving this baby. Brad and Jen
were not together, and if the divorce was just a matter of
snapping one's fingers, then there wouldn't be any question--the
marriage would've been over when the papers were originally filed.

would know that measuring a pregnant abdomen in a door is not a means of accurate measurements. Yes some women are huge...
because they carry big babies often due to diabetes...or they are
huge becaise of polyhydraminos which can add liters of fluid to the
amniotic fluid because the babies kidneys are not functioning. If
this were the case for Angelinia I don't believe do to the later, she
would be in Namibia. Weight gain does not have to do with DNA.
Body size does but not weight gain in pregnancy. Many genetically
obese women when pregnant only gain about 10-12 pounds
because their bodies utilizes the intake of calories to sustain the
demand of their organs. Weight gain also does not "depend" how
much one weighed before they were pregnant. Nutrition plays a HUGE role. Especially protein.

I am not going to argue when the baby is due...I am going to add my objective opinion from photos I have been looking at for months of Angelinia. To me she has appeared right on target.
Is healthy and beautiful. It has been mentioned that with her interview with Ann Curry it was mentioned she was not quite eight months. Months have weeks. By mentioning to me she is not quite 8 months I was led to believe that she is more toward the eight month which starts at 32 weeks. That was what did you say April 5th...So perhaps she was 30- 31 weeks. That would make her due date June 1- June 7th. NOT JULY!

When you were talking about when the seasons officially start, I had to smile. The "official" first days, which are around the 20-23 of June (summer), September (fall), December (winter), and March (spring) fall on the equinox or soltice of each quarter. BUT.... I'm with you, the "official" and what we would call the "real" start to the seasons differ! I have always thought of them going from holiday to holiday, and not of an even three months apiece. Winter starts with Thanksgiving, (at the end of November for those of you who are non-Americans), and goes until Valentine's Day, but in colder climates, it can go until St. Patrick's Day. Spring then goes until Memorial Day (at the end of May), and summer ends and the start of fall is Labor Day (the first Monday in September). Fall then goes until Thanksgiving.

Hi, I´m from Argentina. I just want to say that I love Brad and Angie. I don´t undertsand why there are some people who hates her, Please, she didn´t do anything wrong, on the contrary, she helps people all around the world, donates money, cares about education, she just trying to help. manipulates the celebrities. Consider the report that Brad had
"SNAPPED" out a response "absolutely not" when the question
about his family and relationship was raised. Those of us who
heard the interview know he didn't snap. He laughed and said
firmly but with good humour "absolutely not". But if you hadn't
heard the interview and you read the article about him snapping,
you'd get a different impression won't you?? If it is fair game for
the press to give what they report a spin, it is fair that celebrities
give the reports on them their own spin. To do otherwise is just
plain dumb. That's why I don't really read any of the tabloids
without a huge handfull of salt. Because I now have a better
understanding how this game is played.

how skillfully they can manipulate the press. Do you think that
people like Pat Kingsley and Steve Huvane comes cheap?? I don't
think so. Why are their skills needed? Because the celebrities
need the skills of publicists to manipulate the press. What is
interesting about Jolie is that, she doesn't have her own publicist.
May be now Brad and his publicist advice her on some matters
but still, she has for years not had a publicist. Has she been
skillful? I'd say in the past, not particularly coz I'm not sure all this talk about cutting and vials of blood has actually helped her. Even now, some 5 years later, the elephants amongst us throw this at her face. Nevertheless, in the last few years, she seems to be doing a good job drawing attention on to her causes.

even ordinary folks like you and me. At work, you should make sure that your bosses know who did the work and won't let someone take the credit for work that you've done. I make sure that if someone bad mouths me, that I quietly address the issue - if it is legitimate, by apologising and if not, by correcting the bad impression. Is that important? Yes. I'm not after all, working for nothing. I'm working to succeed both personally and to advance my company's interests. I can't succeed personally if I'm giving a bad impression of myself to my colleagues and bosses.

Your point may be - but she shouldn't use her children in the game. My point is, she can't help but involve her children. They are being photographed everywhere. Even when the paps have to dig ditches to take the photos of the family. The children of celebrities are not protected by law from having their photos taken and published. And the paps take these photos and the tabs published them because we, the readers want to see how the celebrities are just like us. For the kids, being photographed is part of their reality. The kids are in the game and they might as well be taught how to play it too. I see nothing wrong in that. You may also think that she draws attention to these humanitarian causes for personal gain - to improve her public image. Again, that might be true. But nevertheless, what she does to draw attention to these causes is immensely useful for a lot of people who would not normally hear about Darfur, who would not normally think about educating the 100 milliion kids. Should you throw out the baby with the bath water??

If you don't want to have any part in the celebrity game, then
don't read the tabs and don't read the news on the websites about them because of course, there's manipulation. When I say someone is sexily rounded, it conjures up a different image to describing that same person as fat. It is possible not to read the news especially about celebrities. But if you do, you are part of the game too.
