President Barack Obama presents the Medal of Freedom to legendary tennis player Billie Jean King, Academy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier and 14 others during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (August 12).

The President presented the medal to recipients, granting them the highest civilian honor in the United States. Other recipients included: Stephen Hawking, Sen. Edward Kennedy, Harvey Milk, Jack Kemp, Sandra Day O’Connor and Desmond Tutu.

Billie Jean King is the founder of the Women’s Sports Foundation, a national charitable educational organization dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through physical activity. First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha order cheeseburgers, onion rings, fries, and milkshakes from former Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn’s Good Stuff Eatery on Thursday (August 6) in Washington D.C.

“They got the burgers medium,” a spy tells Page Six. “Three starving Secret Service guys were literally standing over the grill as Spike made the burgers, but didn’t eat.” Fellow patrons reportedly had their cellphones temporarily confiscated to prevent pictures from being taken.

First Lady Michelle Obama (in Michael Kors) arrives to address the Design Awards luncheon in the East Room of The White House in Washington, D.C., on Friday (July 24).

“An educational foundation is only part of the equation,” said Obama, who wants to expose more kids to the arts. “In order for creativity to flourish and imagination to take hold, we also need to expose our children to the arts from a very young age. We need to ensure that our children have both — knowledge and imagination. I know I want that for my girls. They deserve to have access to a good education and access to ideas and images that will spark their creativity.”

Later in the day, Michelle and President Barack Obama along with Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James Conway and his wife attended the Marine Corps Evening Parade at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C.

Michelle Obama shows off an elegant short haircut at an event celebrating the storytelling and history of country music in the East Room of the White House in Washington D.C., on Tuesday night (July 21).

The event was the second in a series of musical events at the White House, launched by the First Lady as a way to encourage arts and arts education.

President Barack Obama was there to lend his support. Artists that performed included Charley Pride, Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss and Union Station.

President Obama, 47, and Michelle, 45, were hosted by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his wife Clio. The First Couple arrived in Italy after visiting Moscow.
