Rosie O’Donnell Brings Babes To Broadway

Rosie O’Donnell is attached to star in a revival of the 1937 Rodgers and Hart musical Babes in Arms.

Variety reports the new version of the Depression-era show will a feature a veteran theater person (O’Donnell) helping a group of kids put on a show in order to keep them from being sent to a workfarm.

Rosie last performed on Broadway in 2005’s Fiddler on the Roof.

Tony Awards Ratings Up 20% — Thanks NPH!

Billy Elliot: The Musical stars Trent Kowalik, Kiril Kulish and David Alvarez hold up their Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical (the first time three actors were nominated for one role) at the 2009 Tony Awards held at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday (June 7).

How adorkable were their acceptance speeches?!

Billy Elliot won the most statues of the night, picking up 10 Tonys including the coveted Best Musical. The all-American Hair won as Best Musical Revival.

Thanks for host Neil Patrick Harris, 7.5 million viewers tuned in, up about 20% from last year and the show’s highest ratings in three years. Watch NPH’s closing musical number below!

Chandra Wilson Joins Broadway’s Chicago

Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson will join the Broadway cast of Chicago this summer in the role of Matron “Mama” Morton.

The 39-year-old actress, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on the hit ABC medical drama, will perform during a four-week limited engagement, Monday, June 8 through Sunday, July 5.

Chandra also has appeared in the Broadway productions of Avenue Q and On the Town.

Jennifer Lopez To Create ‘In The Heights’ Movie?

Jennifer Lopez might be putting together a movie version of the Broaday musical In The Heights, reports Page Six.

The 39-year-old tripe threat first saw the hit show back in July, saw it twice last week and accompanied the producer, Meryl Poster, to dinner Friday evening at Nobu 57.

Jennifer is said to be interested in adapting the Tony-award-winning show onto the silver screen. (Poster also produced the movie version of Chicago).

A rep for Jennifer said, “She loves the play but is not Broadway bound.” But a movie version of In The Heights is not out of the question and would be a grrrrrrreat idea. Get on it, Jennifer. Start casting now!

After Miss Julie is Miss Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller will star in the Broadway play After Miss Julie starting in September at NYC’s Roundabout Theatre, reports UK’s Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old British actress will portray the sexually provocative Miss Julie, one of three characters in the show. Sienna’s character is the daughter of a Yorkshire landowner who creates havoc when she visits below-stairs.

The cast features former Urban Cowboy Matt Cavenaugh (main pic, right) as Tony, newcomer Josefina Scaglione as Maria, Karen Olivo (In The Heights) as Anita, Cody Green (maic pic, left) as Riff and George Akram as Bernardo.

You may remember Cody winning the Bravo reality series, Step It Up and Dance. He’s also a featured dancer in Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (in theaters today, Christmas Day). He also performed with Rihanna on CBS’s Fashion Rocks.

Daniel Radcliffe Visits ‘Spring Awakening’

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe visits the cast of Spring Awakening on Broadway backstage at The Eugene O’Neill Theater in New York City on Sunday night.

The 19-year-old British actor supported his fellow Broadway stars, Spring Awakening cast members Hunter Parrish (Melchior), Alexandra Socha (Wendla) and Gerard Canonico (Moritz).

Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik, announced it will close on Broadway on January 18, 2009.

Hugh Jackman is Shrek Sexy

Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman sports some fun ogre equipage — Shrek ears! — while posing backstage with Brian d’Arcy James at Broadway’s Shrek: The Musical at The Broadway Theatre on Saturday (December 20) in New York City.

Some of the other genius cast members are also pictured below: Sutton Foster in the purple (Princess Fiona), Christopher Sieber in the red shirt (Lord Farquaad) and John Tartaglia in the hat (Pinocchio, Magic Mirror, Dragon Puppeteer).

Little known fact via WP: To prevent overheating, the show’s costumers tuck ice packets into pockets of the long underwear James wears under his padded [Shrek] suit. Even so, he is soaked with sweat by the end of each performance.
