Cate Blanchett Plants a Seed

A glowing Cate Blanchett and director husband Andrew Upton arrive for the opening night of the Kate Mulvany play, The Seed, at the Belvoir Street Theatre on Wednesday in Sydney, Australia.

Mulvany says, “The play was written as an exploration of my own family’s spectres of war, and as a response to military commitments being made by my country. The Seed is not so much a political piece however, as it is a deep exploration of family, loyalty and betrayal. It is a play for anyone who lives in a country currently at war, recovering from war, anyone who is part of a family. And in Australia, that’s pretty much all of us right now.”

Joining the Aussie couple: Australian director of theatre, film and opera Neil Armfield and British writer and film maker Ian Sinclair.

The 38-year-old actress expects her third child together this April.

Cate Blanchett is the Modern Master

Mom-to-be Cate Blanchett (in Herve Leroux) attends the Santa Barbara International Film Festival at the at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Aussie beauty received the highest honor as the 2008 Modern Master (Will Smith won last year). She was recently interviewed by SBIFF and here’s an excerpt Q&A:

And you have managed to [provoke, inspire, challenge, and reawaken ideas] by being involved in so many thinking-person’s films. I wonder if that has always been a premium for you? Yes, box-office death (laughs), those thinking-people’s films. I don’t know. I’ve been involved in films that have worked and have not found an audience. I’ve been involved in films that have found an audience and haven’t necessarily been the best films in the world. I’ve been involved in projects that fall somewhere in between all of those goalposts. It has been an interesting experience, particularly having gone to drama school and never really being fascinated by films, to tell you the truth. It was never particularly a mecca for me. Working in the film industry wasn’t a destination for me, because I couldn’t consume film the way I could the live experience. Maybe that’s why I’ve been fortunate in my experiences. I haven’t been so ambitious to try and get somewhere in the film industry. I feel like I’ve been meandering.

Cate Blanchett: Ngapartji, Ngapartji

Mom-to-be Cate Blanchett positively glows alongside director husband Andrew Upton at the opening night of Ngapartji Ngapartji at the Belvoir St Theatre during the 2008 Sydney Festival on Friday in Sydney, Australia.

Ngapartji ngapartji is a main stage theatre production that explores themes of dispossession and displacement from country, home and family. The phrase translates as ‘I give you something, you give me something,’ a concept of reciprocity which governs relationships in Pitjantjatjara society and culture.

(Pitjantjatjara is a central desert language spoken by around 2,500 people across the north-western parts of South Australia and adjacent areas of W.A and N.T. Members of the Pitjantjatjara community will teach us their language - which is one of the world’s oldest - through online stories, songs, animations and short films.)
