Cate Blanchett: Ngapartji, Ngapartji

Mom-to-be Cate Blanchett positively glows alongside director husband Andrew Upton at the opening night of Ngapartji Ngapartji at the Belvoir St Theatre during the 2008 Sydney Festival on Friday in Sydney, Australia.

Ngapartji ngapartji is a main stage theatre production that explores themes of dispossession and displacement from country, home and family. The phrase translates as ‘I give you something, you give me something,’ a concept of reciprocity which governs relationships in Pitjantjatjara society and culture.

(Pitjantjatjara is a central desert language spoken by around 2,500 people across the north-western parts of South Australia and adjacent areas of W.A and N.T. Members of the Pitjantjatjara community will teach us their language - which is one of the world’s oldest - through online stories, songs, animations and short films.)

Cate the Great is due in April.

Cate Blacnhett’s Stylish Baby Bump

A glowing Cate Blanchett shows off her baby bump in an off-the-shoulder halter dress on Tuesday at the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia.

“People often talk about pregnancy as if it’s an illness, don’t they, and the thing is I’m very fortunate to feel disgustingly well,” Cate said.

The mom-to-be was in town for an advanced screening of her new film, the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There. The screening helped raise funds for the company, which is helping to launch a new ticketing initiative: 20 tickets for $20.

“[My husband Andrew Upton] and I really want to find a way to make cheaper tickets available across all productions and we’ll be looking for a corporate partner to be able to do that in 2008,” Blanchett told The Sunday Telegraph. “I think a lot more people would go if they felt they could afford to go so we’re kicking off the initiative (with Blackbird) and hoping to extend the 20 for $20 idea further. I think generally theatre is very expensive for a lot of people (so hopefully this will) make it available to the wider community and invite new audiences in.” (Blackbird is the controversial play Cate is directing for the STC that explores the taboo of child sex abuse.)

Cate Blanchett Has a Toy Symphony

Cate Blanchett downplays her baby bump at the premiere of Michael Gow’s new stage play Toy Symphony at the Belvoir St Theatre on Wednesday in Sydney, Australia.

Cate the Great, 38, was accompanied by director husband Andrew Upton.

According to stage notes, Toy Symphony is about Roland Henning (Roxburgh), who has writer’s block. When he tries to explain the situation to a therapist, his story begins to tumble back and forth between his childhood in The Shire and his work as a playwright. At the root of it all is that extraordinary day in primary school which shattered his boyhood and plunged him headlong into the dizzy circus of life and art.
