I saw the premiere episode of Fringe and my feelings echo those of Variety’s. Solid casting except for Jackson, who may forever be puppy-dog Pacey of Dawson’s Creek. But viewers shouldn’t be dissuaded to watch to show because of him. I really am dying to know what happens in the next episode, as I usually am with any show from J.J. Abrams (Felicity, Alias, Lost) . The Fringe premiere airs next Tuesday, Sept. 9 @ 8PM ET/PT on FOX.

The Sept. 8th issue of TV Guide hits newsstands this Thursday, Sept. 4th.

Ziyi Zhang and Christian Slater raise awareness for the recent China Earthquake at the Carlton Beach during the 2008 Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The May 12 earthquake left at least 41,353 people dead, destroyed 5.4 million homes and damaged another 21.4 million.

China may take as many as 10 years to recover from the disaster, which left an estimated 32,666 people missing, Christian aid group World Vision said.

Ziyi Zhang has personally donated one million yuan ($140,000) for relief efforts.

Sports star and Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has given two million yuan ($214,000) and half a million yuan to the Red Cross Society of China.

Christian Slater is said to be joining a TV series with NBC, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The new series comes from writer Jason Smilovic (Bionic Woman) and is being touted as a mix of The Bourne Identity and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Slater, 38, will play a mild-mannered suburban dad who learns that his alter ego is a spy.

This will be Christian’s first TV series but he’s had guest arcs on NBC’s The West Wing and ABC’s Alias.

Slater, 37, was at the NY premiere and party of the Gen Art Film Festival closing night last Tuesday to promote his He Was a Quiet Man co-starring 24’s Elisha Cuthbert.

During the post-screening Q & A, Slater described his role: “I tried to make myself as small and uncomfortable as possible. I was clenching my ass the whole time.”
