Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon is set to marry girlfriend of six years, education activist Christine Marinoni.

The 43-year-old actress tells Extra, “My girlfriend and I got engaged last month. We’re hoping to do it in New York. We’re not going to wait forever, but we’re hoping it’s just around the corner…Sometime I think before the end of next summer, but we don’t have a date.”

Cynthia has an engagement ring but also reveals her fiancee chose not to have one: “[Christine] did not get a ring. She will have a wedding ring but she does not want an engagement ring.”

The sequel to the movie Sex and the City will “start shooting sometime in August.”

Cynthia Nixon is engaged to her longtime girlfriend, education activist Christine Marinoni.

The 43-year-old actress announced the engagement news at a rally for gay rights in New York City on Sunday (May 17). Cynthia even showed off her engagement ring at The Love, Peace and Marriage Equality rally, which supported New York Governor David Paterson’s proposed bill granting legal equality to same-sex unions.

“I think we would definitely [get married] if it became legal in New York,” Cynthia has told Access. “I don’t really want to get married to get married pretend. I think we’d like to do it in a real, actual, legal way that the state would recognize.”

Cynthia has two children, daughter Samantha, 12, and son Charles, 6, from her relationship with English professor Danny Mozes. Just a few months ago, Cynthia and Christine took the kids to Disneyland.

Cynthia will be reprising her role as high-power attorney Miranda Hobbes in the movie sequel of Sex and the City, out May 28, 2010.

Sex and the City 2 has been confirmed!

SATC writer-director Michael Patrick King tells E!’s Marc Malkin, “I’m very excited to work with these amazing actresses again and would love to give everyone more information about the sequel…but I’m busy with my Sex life.”

All four Sex-y ladies — Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis — signed their deals yesterday afternoon! Shooting begins this summer with a tentative Summer 2010 release date.

When asked if there will be a Sex and the City sequel, the 42-year-old actress said, “[Director] Michael Patrick King has some ideas [for the sequel] and they’re talking to us about signing up. It’s still the beginning of the process but people are generally very hopefully. If Michael Patrick King has a story to tell, then absolutely, I will be there.”

Cynthia added what she would want to see for her character in the sequel: “Miranda had so much pain in the [original] film, I would just like her to have rediscovered the joy in her life and to just get some real quality time with her girlfriends.”

A sequel to the Sex and the City movie is in the early stages of development, HBO confirms to Entertainment Weekly.

And why not? Since its debut in theaters at the end of May, the first spin-off movie from the series has racked up a ridiculous $345 million.

“We’re really heartened by the fans’ enthusiasm,” Michael Lombardo, president of HBO’s programming group, said at the cable network’s annual press tour in Los Angeles. “Absolutely, there is a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie.”

However, the lead actresses (Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis) aren’t rushing to do the sequel as to not risk disappointing their loyal fans.

Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones) on holding out to make the movie: Four years ago I was going through a painful public divorce, the series was coming to an end, and my father was diagnosed with dementia. I felt it was time to be with my real family. A year-and-a-half ago, when I was sent the script, I was ready and strong enough to revisit Samantha. In some ways, I’m glad we waited. The script and the experience of making the movie was the best possible reunion.

Producer Darren Star on the gals of SATC: “These were women who were objectifying men. And it was sort of jarring. Men aren’t used to hearing themselves depersonalized and referred to as Mr. This or Mr. That. I think if you had a show with that sort of locker-room talk from a bunch of guys talking about women, it would be a little ‘yuck.’”
