“Drew has been great for a long time,” the movie’s producer Adam Shankman tells JustJared.com. “She’s such a special person. She fights for such right causes and is kind of a hippie. It’s like putting a hippie inside of a giant megastar who is totally comfortable in her skin. She is incredibly smart and wonderful to work with.”

Drew Barrymore shows some shoulder while filming her new movie Going the Distance on Wednesday (July 29) in New York City.
The 34-year-old actress will debut her first movie as a director, Whip It, at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. The comedy, which revolves around a roller derby in Texas, stars Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, and Juliette Lewis.
Also expected to be at the film festival are acclaimed filmmakers Michael Moore and the Coen Brothers.

Synopsis via USA Today: Ellen stars as a rebellious teenager who signs up to play the brutal and sexy female sport (derby) against her mother’s will, finding friendship and freedom among the bruises and falls.
“Everything I’ve learned throughout my whole life has been going into this piggy bank, and I just smashed it all over the floor for this one,” Drew says of directing the film, which opens October 9.
