Freddie Prinze Jr. is joining the cast of the Fox series 24 as a regular, playing Davis Cole, a recently returned Marine who runs CTU Field Ops (via THR).

The 33-year-old actor will start shooting in New York City soon, where the upcoming eighth season has already started production. Earlier this year, it was reported that Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire) will be playing a Middle East leader and Chris Diamantopoulos will take on the role of the president’s new chief of staff.

This project is perfect for Prinze as his pregnant wife Sarah Michelle Gellar is also in town to shoot her new pilot, The Wonderful Maladys.

Prinze, 33, recently shot the ABC comedy pilot No Heroics, a remake of the British series about D-list superheroes. The pilot also included Paul Campbell (Battlestar Galactica) and Eliza Coupe. According to insiders, the series doesn’t look hopeful!

SMG, who turns 32 on Tuesday, will next serve as executive producer for the HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladays. Prinze recently shot the ABC comedy pilot No Heroics.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, 30, legally took her husband Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s last name on their fifth wedding anniversary, according to Us Weekly.

“She officially changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze,” says one source. “On their anniversary (September 1), she showed [Freddie] her new driver’s license. It was so sweet.”

How romantic!

Co-stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Chris Klein arrive at the world premiere screening of New York City Serenade during the Toronto International Film Festival 2007 held at the Varisty 8 theatre on Thursday.

Prinze, 31, is currently shooting scenes for the TV pilot with Leslie Bibb. Bibb, 32, is best known for her portrayal of Barbie doll prototype Brooke McQueen on WB’s Popular but has made guests spots on hit series such as ER and Crossing Jordan.
