2006’s The Good German draws upon 1942’s Casablanca

Synopsis: Based on the novel by Joseph Kanon, The Good German takes place in the ruins of post-WWII Berlin, where U.S. Army war correspondent Jake Geismar (George Clooney) becomes embroiled with Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett), a former lover who is trying to escape her past in the aftermath of the war. Intrigue mounts as Jake tries to uncover the secrets Lena may be hiding in her desperation to get out of Berlin. Tully (Tobey Maguire), a soldier in the American army motor pool assigned to drive Jake around the city, has black market connections that may be Lena’s way out – or lead them all into even darker territory.

• George Clooney and former flame Renee Zellweger had a romantic dinner together at Tower Bar in the Sunset Tower Hotel in L.A. two Sundays ago. The two cuddled, held hands, and slow danced to piano music, according to a Post spy. However, the Daily News reports that the dinner was all business, as Zellweger is in talks to star in “Leatherheads,” the football flick Clooney will direct.
• Despite Sarah Michelle Gellar’s public praise of The Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing co-star Alec Baldwin, sources close to the two say they hate each other.
• Saved By the Bell star Dustin Diamond is the latest celebrity to appear in a sex tape. Phoenix-based agent David Hans Schmidt confirms that he has acquired the rights to a tape featuring Diamond.

• Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are parting ways. The studio will sever its 14-year relationship with Cruise’s film production company because "his recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount." "It’s nothing to do with his acting ability, he’s a terrific actor.  But we don’t think that someone who effectuates creative suicide and costs the company revenue should be on the lot." Cruise’s partner, Paula Wagner said their company has already obtained commitments from two hedge funds, whose names would be announced soon.
• Star reports that George Clooney and Ellen Barkin are an item, saying the two got close while filming on the set of Ocean’s 13.
• Us Weekly reports that Eddie Murphy is about to pop the question to former Spice Girl Melanie Brown.  A source says, "They are already living together at Eddie’s house," and"Each got a tattoo of the other’s name."  Um, barf?
• Michael Angarano, aka Jack’s long-lost son on Will & Grace, joins the cast of 24.

Looks like George Clooney took a beating yesterday on the Los Angeles set of Ocean’s 13…  with some eye shadow in the make-up room! Check out the inset picture of O13 co-stars George, 45, Matt Damon, 35, Bernie Mac, 47, and Don Cheadle, 41, laughing up a storm during a film break.  In a recent interview at the Edinburgh Film Festival, director Steven Soderbergh confirmed that Ocean’s 13 would be the last in the Ocean’s series… at least with him involved. Somebody needs to kick the habit!  Brad Pitt was spotted smoking yesterday morning on the Los Angeles set of Ocean’s 13.  Brad puffed away at his cancer stick while sitting alongside O13 co-star George Clooney.
