Hilary Swank and Carey Mulligan are beautiful in black gowns at the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony in Beverly Hills on Monday (October 26).

The 35-year-old Amelia actress, who wore a Monique Lhuillier gown with dramatic cutouts and bead detailing, took home the Actress of the Year award.

24-year-old Carey, who wore Prabal Gurung and strappy sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti, won the Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award and has picked up even more Oscar buzz for her role in An Education. “This is exciting. The photo bit is a little scary,” she told the Associated Press. “The lights flash a lot and they made my eyes water, which is terrifying. But it’s amazing.”

Even Hollywood veteran Hilary was in awe of the experience. “I have to say it’s something very surreal,” she noted. “But to have your work recognized at the end of it all is something that continues to leave me speechless.”

Hilary Swank takes off with Amelia director Mira Nair at Essex County Airport, NJ on Friday (October 16).

The 35-year-old Academy Award winner took part in a dedication ceremony of props, costumes and mementos to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum and posed with the Lockheed Electra, the plane used in Amelia’s production.

Mira and Hilary spoke about the film and presented the props and mementos to Susan Larson, President of the Ninety-Nines, an aviation group of female pilots.

“Learning how to fly, for me, was so euphoric,” Hilary shared. “Because it was like I was learning how to ride a bike. It was a first. And, you know, it takes all of your senses. You are completely immersed.

“It’s dangerous. It’s adventurous. It’s all of the things that I love and that I think Amelia loved.”

Amelia opens in theaters nationwide TODAY (October 23).

Hilary Swank walks the red carpet of the premiere of Amelia at The Paris Theatre on Tuesday (October 20) in New York City.

The 35-year-old actress stars in Amelia alongside Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, and Virginia Madsen.

“It’s a responsibility to play someone who really lived,” Hilary told the Vancouver Sun. “And it’s a big responsibility to play someone as iconic as Amelia. I mean, we all have such a great idea of who she was and what she looked like, so there wasn’t a lot of room for fictional license, and we just had to do the best we could to bring honour to that person. Under (director) Mira [Nair]’s guidance and keen eye — she’s an incredible visionary — we just tried to navigate the best we could, and that is hopefully onscreen.”

On people assuming she’s a loner: “For a long time, I was a loner because [my ex-husband Chad Lowe] was my best friend, and we were really happy just hanging out, he and I. I think it was maybe five years ago that I realized how important my friends were to me, and I realized they were a big part of my letting go. When I got divorced three years ago, I needed them more than ever. I have really good girlfriends. Mariska Hargitay is my best friend.”

On young love and learning from it: “Going through a divorce is horrible. It’s dreams crumbling; it’s your family, your whole life, all of your security, disolving. Having been with Chad so young - we met when I was 18- it was all I knew. It is really hard. I certainly don’t wish it on anyone. I feel more than anything right now that age brings so much clarity. You might take a step back, but then you learn from that step back. I’ve learned a lot from my downs, as well as my ups. Right now, I am in a good place.”

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank is getting in some R&R after undergoing what her manager describes as a minor medical procedure at the hospital.

“[Hilary was] experiencing some discomfort and went to see her doctor, who prescribed an immediate course of action that included a brief hospitalization to remove a small, benign growth,” her manager Jason Weinberg tells People.

Weinberg adds, “Her condition has been resolved and there are no continuing health issues, with the exception of some short-term rest and recuperation.”

Hilary Swank walks the red carpet at the Conde Nast Media Group’s 2008 Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Friday.

Fashion Rocks is hosted by Dennis Leary this year with performances by other big artists such as Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake.
